Robert B.

I've driven past Himalayan Kitchen for years and finally decided to stop in after wondering what kind of food they served. The outside of the building shows its age with some faded menu advertisements, but once inside the restaurant opens up more than I expected. At first it feels small, but past the bar there's a comfortable-sized dining room. Every TV was tuned to the World Cup, which gave the restaurant a fun, energetic atmosphere during my visit. Service was prompt and friendly. My waiter recommended the pork for the momo dumplings and also suggested pairing the meal with one of their Himalayan beers. After reading several Yelp reviews, I ordered the sizzling pork momo, naan, and chicken vindaloo. I also took the beer recommendation, which ended up being a good decision considering I ordered the vindaloo at a 4 out of 5 spice level. The sizzling momo was the standout of the meal. The dumplings were excellent, and the accompanying sauce was flavorful enough that I found myself dipping almost everything into it. The basmati rice was perfectly cooked, and the chicken vindaloo had a nice level of heat without overwhelming the other flavors. The chicken itself was tender and cooked well. Portions were generous, and I ended up with more food than I could comfortably finish by myself. Overall, this was a great first visit. Next time I'll bring my wife so we can share a few different dishes and explore more of the menu.

Was still on the hunt for a good butter chicken and decided to try Himalayan kitchen based off of reviews. I ordered the chili shrimp, butter chicken, samosas and rosemary naan. Now this is the butter chicken I have been looking for: rich in flavor, nice roasted pieces of chicken and a buttery texture. It went so well with the rosemary naan, but my kids devoured most of it so will probably order more naan next time. The samosas are homemade and stuffed with potatoes and peas. They also have Nepali dishes on the menu and some indo Chinese which is difficult to find here. Overall some of the best Indian food I have tried in town.

Came here for a Valentine's lunch and well, can't say I heart it very much. Even the great service and friendly staff were not enough to give this restaurant a future spot on our ethnic food rotation. The Butter Chicken should be a staple in any Indian cuisine, but this one slipped through as merely average. I ordered a spice level 4 of 5, which should have set my sweat glands working overtime, but I could not even taste much spice or flavor. Wifey selected the chef's special and it was anything but special. The pricing is fair and the inside atmosphere is low key, which is what I expected from a shopping center establishment. My recommendation is to add in some authentic spices from the east and have the experience be worthy of the name.

Been wanting to try it and so glad we did. Service was fabulous, they gave some suggestions on menu because I was undecided (I really enjoy Indian food). We went with samosas, garlic edamame, garlic naan, butter chicken and tikki masala both medium. Wowza, spiciest thing I've had in San Antonio that had actual flavor not just heat. Soooo good! Can't wait to try some more menu items next visit, and will turn down the heat so I can eat more.

My husband and I were in the mood for some Indian food and thought we would give this place a shot. As you enter, the decorations and music really set the mood for a wonderful experience. The service was quick and the food was delicious and big portions for the cost. I ordered the chicken curry with mild spice and it was delicious and definitely had a kick to it. My husband ordered the lamb masala (not pictured) with high spice and I felt as it was less spicy than mine but it was also very delicious.

Marie T.

What an experience! We were an extremely large group, yet they accommodated us with ease. From the moment we walked in, they made us feel right at home. Our hostess was warm, charming, and nothing short of amazing. When the food came out, every dish was simply delicious--most of us were full before the last plate even hit the table. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, and I only wished I lived closer because I could definitely see myself becoming a regular. My drink was a little sweet for my taste, but everything else was perfect. We also had two vegetarians in our party, and they left just as satisfied as everyone else. Overall, a wonderful dining experience.

The first time I discovered this place I was very impressed. I ordered the Paneer/ Tofu Tikka Masala, which was a huge order. The food was delicious and spicy. I also ordered a Naan bread, to accompany my meal. This was a very good meal and the service was spectacular. Food came out quickly, was the perfect portion, and had great taste. The place is clean and, at the time of our visit, very sedate and quiet. Not too many people, but we arrived at an off time. Prices seemed reasonable. Himalayan kitchen is one of the places that I keep in mind to for a return visit.

This location is in a shared plaza with plenty of parking. The exterior is unassuming but the food and service is fantastic at this family owned business. Our server was also the owner and she was great about talking about the food options. We tried the momos and were not disappointed. She explained this is a popular Nepalese street food. The chicken tikka masala sauce was thick and the chicken chunks were good sized. The garlic naan was yummy and my husband really enjoyed his chicken curry. All tbe dishes were flavorful and could be more spicy depending on your preference. I rarely give a 5 but if I could I would give a 6 star, the food was that good.

Phenomenal food, service & a sweet family owned Nepalese restaurant, MUST try! Tripti the owner and her husband were so helpful to recommend dishes to try. Sometimes trying Indian food I get overwhelmed bc I don't know what everything is. She did not steer us wrong! We had the lamb momo, chicken special, and the sizzling grill. Lots of protein and great flavor! I wish we lived here and we could come back! Also their Himalayan beer was good to pair with the heat of the food

Them samosas where the only saving Grace. The mango mojito was too sweet and tasted like syrup. The momos were bland like the sauce and just reminded me of potstickers, they didn't look like the picture they had on the site at all! My husbands plate was a spicy level of 2/5 and felt like a 4. He could eat even half of it. We actually took it home to our babysitter and let her try and she said the same thing! Both of our stomachs hurt after eating here. My husband got the mango lassi. I didn't like it. I was so sad not to like this place!!! I've been wanting to find a Nepalese place ever since I ate it overseas! Plus the waiter was really nice, but it wasn't my favorite and even my super easy going husband said he wouldn't return.

Ivan J.

A great revisit. It's one of our favorite places in town to get naan. It's so good here. The midget had rice again. It was fantastic. We had butter chicken, samosa, the sizzling grill, and garlic/regular/and cheese naan. One of our favorite things here is that when they mean spice, they mean SPICE! We ordered a level up this time, and man we felt it. In a great way though. The rice was great. The naan was amazing as always. All of it was good to great! So why not a bump up this time to a 5?. Well the service was a little lacking this time. Forgotten items, late arrivals. I wasn't too harsh about it, the waitress was trying her hardest to keep up. Oh, and we had dessert for the first time. Wow! Some of the best red velvet I've ever had, and I'm not a fan of it. This was great! As long as you stay away from the pakoras, and order the spice level accordingly to your level, it's great!

Bar R.

Everything was absolutely delicious! Spicy and perfect. You can choose the spice level :) they have raita and great garlic naan. I got paneer :) and I was in heaven. Thank you! Watermelon juice was great too, like a licuado.

Husband and I had a lunch date and decided to check this place out because we've never had Nepal food but love Indian. The restaurant is nestled with many other businesses and eateries around so they have quite the competition. Upon arriving, the restaurant is clean and inviting. The server was either the owner, partner or has some ties with whoever runs the business. She was professional, knowledgeable and incredibly attentive. What we ordered: - sizzling pork momo: I had no idea what this was but I wanted to try it! There were 10 dumpling like pieces which came out sizzling and looked and smelled amazing! The flavors are bold and for my husband, it reminded him of tikka masala flavors. It did have some hints or notes of those spices but it was very delicious!!! Served hot and fresh! It also has a dipping sauce that pairs nicely with it! This is a definite must!!!! - fish tikka: this too is a must dish! It came out sizzling with amazing flavors and paired with a chutney that went so good with it! The fish was perfectly cooked! It was not dry or underdone! It was perfection! My husband loved this dish! - chicken tikka masala & butter chicken: while I can appreciate the dishes, it was overly sweet for our liking. It was still very flavorful and good, just too sweet for our taste buds. We let the server know and she quickly and kindly wanted to have the chef fix it for us, which we thought was amazing! She has so much confidence in her food, she stated her chefs make everything to order and will make it just the way you like it! You can order less sweet and more tomatoey, the spice levels go from 1-5. We opted for 2 which was perfect for each dish. Just the right amount of heat in my opinion! The next time we will definitely ask for less sweet! - palak paneer: great cheese, great spinach flavor! Great heat level! Hard to mess this one up! - naan: on the weekends, they do a basket for 9.99. It comes with 6 pieces of naan (2 garlic, 2 rosemary , and 2 butter naans). The naans were on point, full of flavor, hot, fresh and just scrumptious! Ive never had rosemary naan but it reminded me of the rosemary bread at Macaroni Grill! It was divine! We will definitely be back and will try more of the Nepal style foods. The server was outstanding, the food was great! I would definitely recommend coming here and trying new cuisines out!!!

We were heading to Target when we noticed the Himalyan Kitchen. My friend is a huge fan of Indian food so we decided to check it out. I'm so glad we stopped by! The food was delicious and the service was excellent! My 9 year old is super picky and didn't like her meal. The owner, Mr. Rajan removed the item from my check. He then offered to bring my daughter anything else to eat at no additional charge because he didn't want her to leave hungry. His kind gesture was very much appreciated. From the exterior this place is rather non-descript. But once inside you are warmly welcomed and served some truly delicious food. My wife had the Sweet & Sour Pork (medium spicy) which was very flavorful with lots of pork mixed in with broccoli, shredded cabbage, carrots, etc., I had the Sizzler Momo which was also delicious. We also shared some Garlic Naan that was excellent. Finally, we tried the rice-pudding. A bit different from the rice puddings I've grown up with, but a good choice. There was enough food that we had leftovers to take home. The leftovers were awesome (lunch today!). I highly recommend this true "family restaurant" which combines from scratch meals with the type of service you only get when it is the family business. While we seldom go out anymore, Himalayan Kitchen has been added to our list of regular places to go. read more

The dinner options were either a buffet, or order straight from the menu. Since the buffet was only $15 per person and included some items we wanted to have anyways, we chose the buffet. The choices were limited in number, but enough for us. Buffet included some traditional entrees like Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Masala and several different kinds of Curry dishes. The rice and nan complimented the dish. Wifey enjoyed her meal and felt like the spice level was good enough, but I wanted something a bit more spicy. If my taste buds don't burn a little, then I feel like it is too Americanized. I understand that a buffet is prepared for the average person, but since San Antonio is already known for spicy foods, then a dish or two of a higher heat level would suffice for me. The restaurant is tucked away in a shopping center and it not real visible from the street so luckily Yelp got us here. It is however, close to Loop 1604, so it is an easy drive after exiting. Waitstaff is friendly and on point so it made the small, but comfortable indoor dining a pleasant experience. We will most likely return and fill our craving here and don't forget to have the Mango Lassi, as it was a nice way of finishing your dinner.

Spice Fine Indian Cuisine & Bar

5.1 mi

At the time I write my review (July 14, 2025), this new Indian restaurant in Helotes has a paltry…read moretwo-star overall rating on Yelp based on two short, non-descriptive reviews. I don't typically rate a restaurant until I've visited at least twice and had an opportunity to sample multiple items, but I'm making an exception in this case, partly because I feel that the current reviews are undeservedly harsh and lacking in detail. Despite a few odd issues, I enjoyed my visit to Spice Fine Indian Cuisine and would recommend it to anyone familiar with Indian food. Before I discuss the food (the most important aspect of any review), I need to describe this restaurant's bizarre setup. It shares the same space as Jalapeno's, a Tex-Mex restaurant that's been in business for several years. According to my server, Jalapeno's and Spice are now owned the same person (an Indian guy who doubles as the chef at Spice). My server explained to me that Jalapeno's operates with a predominantly Mexican staff until 2:30. The Indian staff then take over and open Spice at 5:30. I have no idea how that arrangement works logistically, but who am I to argue? Service was spotty at first, but the staff sorted out the issues quickly. The owner/chef seated me and handed me a small paper menu that lacked many essentials, including tandoori items. When I pointed this out, he determined that he had somehow given me the "wrong" menu. A different staff member (who turned out to be my server) then emerged from the kitchen with a much larger menu. Two of the items I wanted (vegetable pakoras and a mango lassi) were unavailable according to my server, which I found unusual. Fortunately, everything else I wanted was available, so I ordered vegetable samosas, tandoori chicken, saag paneer, and garlic naan. My server explained that the dishes would likely arrive at different times, as each item is made to order. While some customers may scoff at such a statement, I determined it to be a good omen of things to come. Fresh food is invariably worth the wait! --Vegetable samosas: 5.0/5.0 These come two to an order, though I could have eaten four, as I appreciate a tasty samosa. The potato/spice mixture was incorporated thoroughly, ensuring that every bite was bursting with flavor and capsaicin. Yes, these two bad boys bit me back! The shells were crispy unlike most samosas I've tried at Indian buffets. I still long for the enormous, transcendently delicious samosas from the now-defunct Kohinoor (my favorite desi restaurant in San Antonio), but these were excellent nonetheless. --Tandoori chicken: 4.5/5.0 The six pieces (legs and thighs) were juicy and benefitted from the charred Maillard reaction from the sizzling cast iron skillet. I could definitely taste the garam masala spice/seasoning but would have appreciated a bit more. White meat chicken tends to dry out, so I'm glad that Spice serves only dark meat. I would rate Spice's tandoori chicken above any of the Indian buffets scattered about town. --Saag paneer: 4.5/5.0 India Palace remains the undisputed king of saag paneer in San Antonio, but I enjoyed Spice's iteration, as it ramped up the capsaicin to levels that most casual diners (i.e., wussies) would find too spicy. The garam masala was incorporated properly into the ghee and spinach, and the titular paneer cheese was fresh and plentiful. The serving size was also generous: approximately 50% more than what I've received at other desi restaurants. --Garlic naan: 5.0/5.0 Spice's naan struck the perfect balance between crispy and soft. Most Indian restaurants--both buffet and full-service--include a smattering of canned chopped garlic that doesn't taste like much of anything. If you take a glance at the attached photo, you'll see that the kitchen applied a generous smear of fresh roasted garlic to every piece of my naan, which I used primarily as a vessel for the saag paneer. We need more ethnic restaurants in this part of town. We had a very good Indian restaurant called Ruby's that closed about a year ago due to poor business. Helotes already has enough boring, bland, milquetoast chains and fast-casual garbage, so let's come together to support independently owned places like Spice. Ignore the naysayers and trust the opinions of someone like me: a user with both the expressive ability and culinary acumen to review a place like this accurately.

I always order veggie samosas, butter chicken, and garlic naan. The samosas were a bit greasy but flavorful. The mint cilantro chutney was more sour than im used to and that was a common theme here. The butter chicken could have come out of the microwave, the surface had a sheen like it wasn't from the pan. It was also sour, acidic, and very thick. Service was good, but like I said we were the only ones here. It's very dark in here and looks like a Mexican cantina, because it is.

This felt like I was in one of those social media videos, you know the ones that have the trumpets getting louder...where do we do we begin to explain how bad the service was? First we showed up FIFTEEN mins after it opened..and we still sat and waited for additional 20 mins to be seated. No one, I mean no one came out from the back to seat to us. Meanwhile we witnessed not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 groups walk out, as we should have. But...I saw the reviews...the bad reviews were all pretty much about service, but I thought man, the food must be that good, that curiosity got the better of me. Finally, a gentleman stepped out from the back, and proceeded, with no apology, and with all the attitude of a door knob, to seat us. Wait...it gets worse. We still waited. To be brought menus and order. At this point we witnessed THREE tables seated get up and leave. It peaked my interest even more. I know, I know. Call me a glutton for punishment. Then the host, who was obviously late, came in, brought us menus, didn't say a word, and brought us water, asked if we were ready to order. I'm like my guy, "we just got the menus, and you walked in like 5 mins ago". Stone cold face, no emotions. Remember what I said about "these restaurants". I don't even know if I should waste my time with food or atmosphere. The place is decent looking inside. Trying a little too hard to be "cute". I will say this about the food. It is nowhere near worth the price, or good enough to put up with the bad service. We all had curries of some sort, dosas, and naan. They were spicy. That's it. Nothing special. The samosas were ok. The sauces were good. The naan was ok. What I'm saying is I don't get it. Are we supposed to expect this type of service and be ok with it? Someone please tell me, because I feel it will not be the first nor last time we will get his service from this type of cuisine. We also had a bottled mango lassi, again nothing special. My dream one day is to get to a point, when I can pick several people who give places like this such high scores, take them say like, himalaya or another place, and dare them to say this place is better. Portion for price bad too...and they charge for EVERY THING extra. Never ever again.

However, the chutney was not very impressive, and the sambar was just average. On the owner's recommendation, we tried the Jackfruit Biryani, my first time having it. It was decent and flavorful enough to enjoy. For my wife, the owner suggested the Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani. It tasted fine, but she noted that it was entirely dum rice. Typically, biryani has layers of masala rice, white rice, and meat, but the white rice portion seemed to be missing. For dessert, we had the Shahi Tukda (today's special), which was delicious and not overly sweet, just right. The Irani chai was okay this time; we found it better during our last visit. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience, and we would consider visiting again. The place was neat and clean.

My recent visit to Himalya Kitchen was a total disappointment. I ordered a supposedly vegetarian dish, chhole, but was shocked to find chicken pieces in it. Every South Asian restaurant I've loved in my life has been a health inspector's nightmare…read more In Berkeley, I used to frequent Kabana, where the bathrooms were disgustingly filthy, and the only source of light was my phone. Best food ever. Here in SATX, for years, I've (begrudgingly) frequented Madurai Mes a few blocks away. You enter the lobby, and it feels like the staff is having a competition over who can ignore you. It's cramped and dingy, and there are AC hoses snaked throughout the place, and I've never been able to eat there for under $30, but they make a pretty good thali. And so in my brain, the best indian food comes from Resturants you don't much want to eat at. Nawabi was huge and well lit and dare I say clean? It felt slightly dated, and culturally a bit off - like maybe it belonged to an Ethiopian restaurant before - but classy. So the food was going to suck. The menu is expansive and seemingly interesting. It was missing my thali. It did have a number of dishes that offered a few things to try. I haven't, as an adult, longed for food served from a bucket - but Biriyani seems like a solid choice with which to fill one. My kid doesn't care for dosas, but does he like chocolate dosa? I don't know, but were fixin' to find out. Some of the weekend-only options had me salivating. I ordered the Plain dosa with mutton curry. This is a novel combination to me, and maybe also to my waiter, who had me point it out on the menu. It was good, the dosa was thin and crispy with the right amount of edges, the sambar was just ok, the chutneys were good, mutton curry was excellent. I skipped dessert, and opted for chai masala. But I should have really gone with some of their kulfi which looked super tempting in its display case. In short, everything was pretty awesome. I have my next visits penciled in to try the lunch buffet, peruse the weekend menu, and track down the AYCE pani puris. The only problem was that this time - on a Monday night - I was the only customer there, which was weird. But the staff was super welcoming, no Deliverance vibes, so I went with it. I was especially happy to see the fried breaded fish fillets and plenty of mixed pakoras, most of them veggie-friendly for me. And that garlic naan! I'm not sure if they changed the recipe or if it's just been a while, but it was noticeably better and seriously yummy. Before leaving, I told the manager/owner that the new place was nicer but seems smaller. He happily corrected me--and gave me the full tour. Turns out there's a whole dining area beyond the door near the buffet, additional rooms for larger groups, a party area that can also expand dining space when they're busy, and even a lanai/patio for al fresco dining when San Antonio weather cooperates.
