    Junior Suite Queen w/sofa
    P. Amanda S.

This was our first time in Cardiff and the hotel made our stay so much better. For a week's stay, the junior suite was fantastic. The room was spacious with plenty of seating. It's location made walking around the city centre (and points beyond) very easy. The staff was very friendly and polite. The heat went out in our room one night, and we were quickly given a small heater which worked brilliantly. Hotel parking is not actually at the hotel. For parking you have to go down the street, and park in a very tight underground car park below the Capital Tower. It's not too bad unless it's raining and you have rush back to the hotel in the wet, cold rain.

View of Castle Cardiff from our room.

Loved the location and the fact that they have valet parking (was fine on the roads with the reverse-side wheel rental car, but WAY more comfortable with someone else parking the car for me in a cramped city!) Directly across from Bute Park and Castle Cardiff, as well as surrounding arcades. Extremely convenient. Probably a bit pricy when compared with close alternatives, but honestly we were at the tail end of a week-long trip and I didn't think it was unreasonable given the location and amenities. Staff were extremely professional and friendly. We arrived before check-in do our room wasn't ready. Front desk couldn't have been friendlier. Took our bags and secured them, gave us a map of the city and some suggestions, then called us when our room was ready. When we came back, everything was already in our room (which had a gorgeous view of the castle). Beds were super comfortable, too.

After starting my recent trip overseas in a cramped little hotel room in England, the move to Hilton Cardiff was a relief. I can summarize this hotel up in three words: big and beautiful! The colors used in his hotel are light and bright, and the decor and furniture modern and comfortable. Not only that, but in my room at least my travel buddy and I could take advantage of a huge bathroom that contained a shower AND a bathtub. Seeing as many places are doing away with the tubs, we were delighted to find one in our room. And after walking here, there and everywhere while and Cardiff, we each soaked in that bathtub both nights of our stay. Not only is the hotel layout great, but the location is excellent - it's right by Cardiff Castle and is a quick stroll away from several of Cardiff's major streets and shopping areas. Add in the super friendly and helpful staff, who were more than delighted to answer questions as this pair of American tourists made plans for the weekend, and this hotel overall really impressed me. Sadly, few places are perfect. Hilton Cardiff's biggest weakness is their horrible wi-fi, which constantly booted my travel buddy and I offline and made it impossible to do much on our phones and tablets. Definitely not okay, especially when you consider the normal extra cost of said wi-fi (I believe in our case we received it for free as Hilton reward participants, thankfully). Unfortunately, we also happened to stay during a rugby match night, which meant as late as 10:30pm (and even a little later if I remember correctly) the hotel was alive with the sounds of yelling rugby fans. Sorry, but if you're going to open your doors to members of the screaming public, you need to invest in better sound proofing in your hotel. Otherwise it's 100% unfair to the guests who are paying to stay there, as far as I'm concerned. Still, the good here definitely outweighed the bad during my stay - I'd give them a 3.5 rating if I could, and I'd definitely consider staying here again in the future (as long as it wasn't during another big rugby match!).

Overly priced and Branded. Not really worth it. Also mean to staff. Getting the most out of customers as well as staff.

The location as well couldn't be much better, with it being minutes from the city centre, the New Theatre, the National Museum and Gallery's, the park and so on. The only downside of that is there is no car park so you have to pay to park in a fairly expensive NCP across the road. We went there for a chill out break for my boyfriends birthday. With a nights accommodation, breakfast, a massage and all day use of their spa facilities it came to £75 each but it was really worth it for how spoilt we felt.

And, the traditional performance by the Cardiff Mens' Choir before the rugby was a pleasant surprise. Second, the bad. The hotel is a mess. A full renovation is required everywhere, and the price does not reflect the level of disrepair. We "upgraded" to a small suite, and the walls were filthy, carpeting burned with an iron and stained, the couch was cheap and ragged, the bed lumpy (and only full sized). The room heating did not really work, shower drain slow, peeling wall paper, and hole repairs which weren't painted. The iron had no steam, and had burnt on crud (from carpet burn), and the lighting electrics were atrocious. The lifts went out on the second day, which means we were trapped when the Choir performed on the stairs before the Italy match. There is no other ingress/egress from the upper floors. If you are coming in for a rugby match, go for it if it is cheap enough. Otherwise, avoid at all cost

Because of that history, I was genuinely looking forward to staying here, but unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. We arrived on time hoping for an early check-in. No rooms were available, which was understandable, but we were told the bar/restaurant would not open until 5:30 pm, so we had to leave the hotel for lunch. When we returned, our room was ready, but we were informed the lift had been out of order since last year. With no assistance available for luggage until later in the afternoon thankfully the porter arrived early and carried our bags up 56 steps. The stairwell had a strong musty smell. The room itself was cold and uninviting, with stained carpets and no heating on. The radiator was completely covered by a heavy blackout curtain, preventing any warmth. We had to rearrange the curtain and use a portable oil-filled heater to make the room comfortable. The en-suite bathroom was in very poor condition: no proper curtain (only netting), no heating, a cracked sink, leaking taps, flaking paint, water stains on the ceiling, and even a cracked windowpane. There was also no fridge in the room. We paid for the breakfast package, but the buffet didn't open until 8:00 am and the food was disappointing--barely warm, dried-out bacon, and eggs sitting in cold fat. Bar hours were listed as 5:30-11:00 pm, yet on two occasions we returned before 10:00 pm hoping for a nightcap, only to find the bar already closed. Housekeeping also knocked on our door at 7:30 am, which felt unnecessarily early. On a positive note, the staff were polite and sympathetic, Given the Angel Hotel's history and reputation, this stay fell far below expectations and sadly felt tired, poorly maintained, and undermanaged.

Reasonably good equipped, modern workout room (can't call it a gym). Room was on the old side, but it still was very clean. I did check the bed check the sheets and sure enough they were crisp and white and quite satisfactory. As I said, I spotted the dirty windows, the first thing that caught my eye. As I added it towards the windows I noticed it was double glazed. But not double glazed as we see today. There was an internal sliding window with a sash vertical sliding window. They were both filthy. The window sill hard tea or coffee rings. There was a dirty spoon in the window. Also. There were nutshells on the floor and as I pulled the curtain dust fell and I noticed the skirting was absolutely caked in it. I walked around the bed and noticed white bits on the floor on closer inspection. These were finger or toenails. I noticed in the little cubby hold was a can over the headboard. There were two small milk containers. This led me then to continue scrutinizing the room. I went to the bathroom and sure is eggs. There was residues of poo in the toilet. I also found a piece of paper in the cabinet that was maybe a list of somebody's jobs. I don't know. I was absolutely tired. Couldn't be bothered reporting it. I had one of the best nights sleep I got to be honest, maybe because I was really tired and overtired. However, the next night was dreadful. Appreciate this a central location but it was far too noisy. I'm not going to complain about the noise. It is what it is. They double glazing didn't do anything. However, there were a couple of flaws to the hotel that didn't make my stay as enjoyable. Pros First: - The room was actually quite big and I appreciate that they gave us 3 beds instead of 2 (1 king + 2 twin). - The hotel seems very safe. Even though it is on the main street in Cardiff, they do lock their doors after a certain time at night and you can only open the doors with your key card. - The location is great, right next to the main train station and street which has a ton of restaurants. - The hotel price was insanely cheap. Cons: - The shower was quite gross as the shower curtain seemed like it had never been washed in its life. Also, the floor was quite slippery. - The toilet wasn't the cleanest as you could see stains on the bottom of the toilet where it met the floor. - The sink also clogged up halfway through our visit for no apparent reason. Overall, because of the bathroom situation, which did not make me want to go in there eve, I may reconsider coming back. However, the prices are hard to find anywhere else especially with this type of room size.
