First, the good. The hotel is very well located in central Cardiff. Right across from the Castle and 100m from Principality Stadium. Perfect, really. And, the traditional performance by the Cardiff Mens' Choir before the rugby was a pleasant surprise. Second, the bad. The hotel is a mess. A full renovation is required everywhere, and the price does not reflect the level of disrepair. We "upgraded" to a small suite, and the walls were filthy, carpeting burned with an iron and stained, the couch was cheap and ragged, the bed lumpy (and only full sized). The room heating did not really work, shower drain slow, peeling wall paper, and hole repairs which weren't painted. The iron had no steam, and had burnt on crud (from carpet burn), and the lighting electrics were atrocious. The lifts went out on the second day, which means we were trapped when the Choir performed on the stairs before the Italy match. There is no other ingress/egress from the upper floors. Growing up in Cardiff, the Angel Hotel was always "the place"--famous for hosting high-profile guests and touring rugby and football teams. Because of that history, I was genuinely looking forward to staying here, but unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. We arrived on time hoping for an early check-in. No rooms were available, which was understandable, but we were told the bar/restaurant would not open until 5:30 pm, so we had to leave the hotel for lunch. When we returned, our room was ready, but we were informed the lift had been out of order since last year. With no assistance available for luggage until later in the afternoon thankfully the porter arrived early and carried our bags up 56 steps. The stairwell had a strong musty smell. The room itself was cold and uninviting, with stained carpets and no heating on. The radiator was completely covered by a heavy blackout curtain, preventing any warmth. We had to rearrange the curtain and use a portable oil-filled heater to make the room comfortable. The en-suite bathroom was in very poor condition: no proper curtain (only netting), no heating, a cracked sink, leaking taps, flaking paint, water stains on the ceiling, and even a cracked windowpane. There was also no fridge in the room. We paid for the breakfast package, but the buffet didn't open until 8:00 am and the food was disappointing--barely warm, dried-out bacon, and eggs sitting in cold fat. Bar hours were listed as 5:30-11:00 pm, yet on two occasions we returned before 10:00 pm hoping for a nightcap, only to find the bar already closed. Housekeeping also knocked on our door at 7:30 am, which felt unnecessarily early. On a positive note, the staff were polite and sympathetic, Given the Angel Hotel's history and reputation, this stay fell far below expectations and sadly felt tired, poorly maintained, and undermanaged. read more

Great location and find. The hotel lobby and halls can seem a bit dated but rooms are really good. We had a great experience with a cozy bed. The only thing that bothered is that all available outlets are far away from tables or bed. Our electronics were charging on the floor. Staff were kind and helpful. read more

Complete opposite of the hotel in London. This and the Bed and Breakfast in Dublin tie for best room during our stay. The hotel was clean, spacious and beautiful. Located right across from the Castle and shopping. I highly recommend this one! Large clean rooms and welcoming staff. The restaurant was wonderful as well. Fairly priced with delicious food. The salmon I had was perfect with a lemon cream sauce. I would definitely stay here again! The room wasn't expensive (less than 50 USD a night) for 4 star hotel quality. read more

My husband and I booked a "Deluxe" double room for £200 and we didn't even spend the night, we checked out by 9pm. Firstly it's marketed as featuring premium bedding for a great night's sleep yet 2 of the pillow covers were inside out and when I went to correct it, found a black hair inside the pillow case. The pillows were old and cheap, far too small for the average size pillow cases and it was the same for the duvet and duvet cover. The duvet was so thin and literally too small for the duvet cover. The entire premise of staying in a hotel is to sleep there. I honestly could not sleep in a bed that has unclean and poor quality bedding. Save your money and go to a Premier Inn where you know the quality of bedding is always reliably great! I left a Google review and Utkarsha Chauhan, the operations manager, responded by saying that the reception team are available 24/7 and that they are sure that if I brought this to their attention then they would have resolved it straight away. Like I said earlier, we checked out at 9pm and obviously I told reception! their response was that they would have upgraded us but they're fully booked and they refunded us £15 for the parking. Even if they had offered to upgrade us the fact that they're too cheap to spend money on decent quality bedding and good housekeeping on a £200 room shows the lack of care and pride which means that there is no chance I would have ever accepted an "upgrade". I've never stayed the night here but i've been to a couple of christmas parties here and I really like it. Its got a certain glamour and charm to it. Its been having work done to it for years now but i'm glad they are trying to bring out the best of it. For a party it was great, holds a lot of people, has really good food, the disco is fun and its conveniently located in the centre of town so you can still hit the clubs after. You can also choose to stay the night pretty cheaply. read more

I actually booked this place for a work trip. It was listed as being close to the conference venues and near the castle, so if nothing else, I'd see something historic. I've travelled over the last few months for various work things and the hotel prices have always been high and I've considered them not really to be worth the price paid - ie. if not booked for work, then I wouldn't have paid those prices myself. The Angel Hotel was a bargain. A pretty white building on the corner across from the Castle. Central, clean and an utter steal. £70 per night for a spacious room with help yourself breakfast/eat as much as you want. I arrived early - 3 hours before the official check-in time, expecting to be told that I wouldn't be able to get my room until the alloted time. Not so! There was not a room but staff promised to get me a room, asap and were liaising with house-keeping to make that happen. I got to my room to discover a spacious room, wardrobe in a mini hallway and bathroom at the end of the hallway with a decent shower over the bath. Definitely an improvement on my claustrophobic shower from my Boston trip. A hostess tray was provided with tea and coffee and a couple of little packets of biscuits. My room didn't have a castle view but as I got to check in more than 3 hours early, I wasn't complaining. Breakfast was included and was great. Buffet style with continental, full Welsh, fruit, pastries and croissants all available and fresh tea and coffee would be brought to your table. I'm a coeliac and being in a rush when I packed, I forgot to bring bread, but the kitchen has gf bread so if you need it, make a note on your booking and ask for it. Staff were friendly and helpful. Facilities were good and the location is fab. Its really across from the Millenium Stadium too so it would be a busy hotel if an event is on there and it is across the road from the Castle, with the main shopping streets only a couple of streets away. This perennially under-renovation Hotel occupies prime real estate in the centre of Cardiff, right opposite the Castle and a stagger away from the millennium stadium (or Bute Park, for those gentler souls who prefer a leisurely stroll over the exertions of big league sporting events). Having attended a number of wedding receptions and corporate functions here I can report that the facilities are very nice, the staff welcoming and friendly and the bar prices reasonable (for a hotel - those watching the pennies may wish to seek oblivion at the Wetherspoon's four doors down on Westgate Street). The interior, however, with its many corridors and nooks and crannies, sits at the middle point between 'charming' and 'terrifyingly reminiscent of the overlook hotel from The Shining' - after a few gin and tonics I settled on charming, but your mileage may vary. There are also some truly revolting examples of the carpet makers art in some of the function rooms, but these will surely be renovated away very soon (if they haven't already been consigned to oblivion). I haven't stayed overnight, but I have it on good authority that the rooms are well appointed and nicely (re)furbished - and the location is great for events in the city centre. Room prices for those approaching without a reservation are astronomical, but that is the case with many hotels - book online in advance and there are some good deals to be had. read more

Dining experience at this hotel left much to be desired. The only course which lived up to expectations was the dessert. The food was not hot enough, much of the soup was returned and the vegetables were unrecognisable. This was not just my opinion but that of the others in the party. I haven't stayed here YET - but me and my colleagues in work are holding a conference here in May 2009 and we researched pretty much every hotel in Cardiff City Centre and The Angel won it hands down. The staff are amazing - especially Karen, the Manager - and the hotel itself has character in oodles. The splendour of the massive staircase in the lobby takes your breath away as you walk in (the giant chandelier helps) and the smells wafting from the restaurant make you want to go there and eat something IMMEDIATELY! The bar is well stocked and you can take your drinks into the lounge area in the lobby, where you can sit in hig-back velvet chairs and pretend that you're a member of the gentry! The conference/ball room is huge with a high ceiling and a balcony that transports you back in time to an age when people dressed for dinner and waltzed around the room as the sun set. Situated right in the heart of the city with shops and bars and restaurants abundent on either side of the hotel and Cardiff Castle and surrounding park are right opposite, The Angel is a gem that should be treasured. This is a very nice hotel, close to pubs and restaurants, walkable to the main tourist attractions. We appreciated having a hot water pot, instant coffee, tea, and milk in the room. Staff are very friendly and helpful, the room was very clean, and the bed was comfortable. Amenities were a bit less than expected--one bar of soap and one vial of shampoo for two people, no hand towels, no top sheet on the bed (n.b.: lack of top sheet may not be unusual in the UK, based on other places we stayed)--but we were fine with that. What made the room less than comfortable for us was temperature: the room was too warm for comfortable sleeping, since we like a cool room, and the temperature settings apparently did not allow for that. Fans of warm rooms will be happy, though. read more

When ever I pass I can't help but look into the cosy reception and the grand steps leading up to the rooms. The Angel hotel is located on Castle Street which is very close to the Millenium Stadium and only a short walk to Mary Street for the main night life. This hotel is often used for weddings as it is beautiful and ideal for some dramatic pictures. Rooms are large and comfortable. read more

This hotel is a 17th century hotel. Don't expect the modern look smell and vibe because you would not find it. However it's ancientness is its real ness. The decors are LIKE of those castle you visit in UK. We stayed in room 101 overlooking the very front of the hotel and the castle. Don't expect sound proofing walls as I'm sure back then Queen Victoria didn't get that too. The hotel is very convenient to the malls stores, restaurants, the Cardiff bay, the castle, the park so that's a very big plus. And oooh next door is that Welshcakes. Passing by I was awed of its sweet sweet smell, if you're on carb free diet forget it it's going to be extra hard, you'll be going home extra piggy pig pig lol. Contrary to popular belief, price is quite fair and comparable to california but still .62 pence per dollar so it's almost half. But hey it's my vacay so I can shell out if I want to. Lol. This is not a cheap restaurant, though I can't remember the exact price. We only go there for birthdays or other treats. However, it has been widely reviewed in England and it employs first class chefs. All meals are prepared to order so forget it if you want fast food. The bar meals are the same as those provided in the restaurant and many would consider the bar environment more congenial. Menus are shown on the website but there are always specials as well. Puddings are also high quality and I would particularly recommend the summer puddings - delicious. To revert to where I started, it's not cheap but the food's as well cooked as in many far more expensive places. read more

We found a night here as a 'top secret' hotel on Last Minute, so we only paid something like £45 for the night. Lovely, well decorated and furnished room with all the facilties you would expect. All night bar very useful, as well as being able to sit in the fantastic staircase entrance way which makes it seem like a really fantastic hotel, without the price tag. Its right next to the millenium stadium & cardiff castle, and has plenty of bedroomsm including suites. It is within walking distance of the shops and the buses are regular around the area, also a five minute walk from the train station. Was desperate to stay at the Angel. It was the poshest hotel from my childhood. Was sorely dissapointed - the public rooms downstairs are reminisent of its past. Faded carpets, chandeliers and all that great faded glory. Upstairs, what a dissapointment, fake fur, laminate flooring - not at all what I expected or wanted. I dont know when they did this but I dont like it. This is a great location and has some great legacy of being the nearest hotel to the rugby stadium.
