Not happy with my experience here this past visit. I have a learning disability so having everything written down or online available is VERY important for me. I requested for my diagnosis from the doctor and waited nobody would give me that info right away. I also asked if my notes would be online for me to look at and the receptionist said it would be available in the next hour after my visit. I saw them yesterday around noon time it is now the next day around 5pm and I can't even access my account and see anything. During my visit the doctor spoke very quickly.. so I could not understand or get that information and I told her I have a disability. I guess that just flew over her head.. So you would think they would meet my needs. The nurse that took me back didn't say much to me. Kinda felt like her demeanor was very rude. I get it was a busy day but as the person who is going in there to be treated and to be missing work I do need to have this information given to me in a way that I am able to understand. A simple note of the reason of what is going on with me. I highly recommend going to the urgent care by the hospital. Very respectful, polite and thorough. read more

The Hilo clinic has been great to our ohana. Moving back to Hilo from Alaska, where we previously stationed, they were a great resource to ensure my family stayed healthy in between PCPs. I unexpectedly developed an ear infection and had to run into Hilo Urgent Care. The line to check in wasn't long and I was seen quickly. The Nurses and Provider, Kirk were fantastic. They are understaffed and I can see how waiting in line for a while can be inconvenient however they had positive attitudes and listened to my concerns. Had the pleasant experience of swift medical attention and care after a trip and fall incident. Staff was exceptionally kind, professional and caring. Staff worked well with one another and kept both myself and wife cool and calm during our visit, and x-rays. The quality of care is sufficient until one can get to their PCP, however the check in experience is truly unbelievable. They require sick and injured people to stand in line, no shade or sitting area (aside from the carport but then you lose your place in line), in the hot sun or rain, to check in with the staff at the windows, who have always been hostile and curt. I waited in the sun, while very sick and with a temperature of 101 for 50 minutes only to be welcomed with sour attitude by the person at the window then again by the nurse who checked my vitals. I mentioned to her "standing in the sun while sick to check in is rough, it would be great if there were benches sit on while we wait to be checked in" she replied, "Not my problem, I only work here, talk to management". I replied, "I almost fainted" she snapped back "like I said, talk to management". This is a member of the medical team. Unbelievable. There is no excues for not having, at minimum, benches and umbrellas available for patients while waiting to checkin. Requiring sick patients to stand in the hot sun is cruel. Sick keiki, sick kupuna were all standing in the hot sun for a very long time. The solutions to providing more comfort to patients are easy. Maybe make available the unused waiting room or add a couple of benches to the outside waiting area so sick and injured people can at least sit down without giving up their place in line. There's no excuse for this. Doctors have been great but you gotta make your way through the guantlet of standing in a brutal line and attitude from staff. I've been there multiple times over the past few months as I manage a chronic issue and sometimes need immediate care while waiting to see PCP and my check in experience has been consistently bad. This is the only urgent care in Hilo and they have no competention, nor incentive, to provide better check in experience for patients. read more

I am new here in the island and need to go to urgent care I check rating first but noticed that this place don't have a good rating but decided to go there. I noticed that the stuffs are very nice and friendly and provides the best care for their patients. I was really surprised. The receptionist are on top of everything, from checking you in and made you feel comfortable. They even inform you, your waiting time. I was treated by a lady doctor K.. is here first initial in her name not so sure but she's really good and very nice. My rashes are getting better . My husband fell against our rock wall and his skin under the elbow tore That was on a Tuesday. He bandaged the area and by Thursday it was still bleeding so we walked into Hilo's urgent care and met with Dr. Laura Kent She attended to my husbands issue quickly and was very efficient. Cleaned his wound and applied bandage and gauzes. She advised him to return on Sunday (Super Bowl Sunday) to do a recheck and apply new bandages. We'll be returning on Tuesday to have another check done. Had to stop in early because of an illness picked up on my honeymoon. Everyone who helped us seemed to really genuinely care, and coming from the mainland where I would have to be lucky or dying to see an actual DR. And not a nurse was a blessing. He quickly and accurately helped and I appreciate everything they did for my strep throat. I've had progressive symptoms over the past couple of weeks and this morning was too weak to make breakfast and my heart rate was in the hundreds at rest. When I checked in they said an hour wait, which was fine I just sat in my car. They called to finish my check in and said another 45 minutes. Waited for the doctor for another 40. He came in and said verbatim "it's a virus, you'll feel better tomorrow," and sent me home. Thank you sir, I've felt worse and worse over the past 2 weeks, I'm sure I'll feel golden in the morning! To clarify, I was not seeking antibiotics or medications. I fully understand you cannot treat a virus with antibiotics. But since I have had symptoms for weeks already, ordering bloodwork such as thyroid hormone, or even electrolytes would have made sense in my circumstance. Or even hook me up to an ECG for a little while idk. Literally anything else. read more

When you have to tolerate a toxic attitude like hers to get your questions answered, anywhere else is better than here. UPDATE: Had no choice but to go into Hilo Urgent Care due to a persistent illness and my PCP being booked weeks out. Went in and to my delight, the sign-in process and front-desk staff were efficient and welcoming. The clinic was also empty on this particular day. BUT, the doctor this time around was just as unhelpful as the doctor from my first visit from my initial review. What's more, she was rather rude. She had an upbeat personality, but I don't think she realized that what she was saying, and how she was saying it, made me feel stupid and ashamed of myself for coming in to see a doctor; to get peace of mind. I felt completely put on the spot and felt as though my reasons for coming in were wholly rejected/dismissed. I would strongly advise anyone who needs urgent care in Hilo to simply go to the ER if they are able. I wish I had read the reviews on Google and Yelp before coming to the Urgent Care center detailing how they treat patients, make people cry, and are just all around nasty. I will preface the rest of this review by saying the office staff is sweet and efficient and the X-ray tech was quick and clear in the instructions and very friendly. I went in for chest pain post-COVID that had become unmanageable. I waited three hours in the hot parking lot, which is more a reflection of not having more options than the fault of the office. After a three hour wait, Dr. Tokumura came in, saw me for about twenty seconds, and was ready to tell me to just take ibuprofen and walk out. I wanted to express WHY I was concerned and (six weeks of this pain at this point, additional symptoms that may or may not be related but were definitely pertinent). I was told that anything else didn't matter to her, and she was annoyed when I expressed my frustration. I told her I felt she was being dismissive and that i didn't feel satisfied with my care. Apparently, she didn't like having her "authority" challenged. I asked for an X-ray for peace of mind, she was CLEARLY pissed about that. At no moment was I rude (I was almost in tears from pain), but I *was* insistent on the X-ray, and I was clear that I was displeased. She didn't let me see the X-ray, simply came back in to say she was right, was incredibly rude and snarky when she came back to the door, and then walked away. Today, upon reviewing my file online, I saw she put a "ICD-10 - F91.9 Difficulty controlling behavior" on my chart. I was FLOORED. For those unfamiliar with these chart codes it means the following: "The person may also quickly get angry or aggressive towards others. They may also become violent towards others. They may also commit crimes." Look. I was 9th in line and waited THREE HOURS TO BE SEEN. By that, one would assume patients get a few minutes, at least, with a doctor. And if Dr. Tokumura did that, and had AN OUNCE OF COMPASSION for patients in pain, she might have been able to convey that she actually is a doctor because she cares about the health of others, and not because she gets off on exerting her authority over others. I will be filing a professional complaint and escalating this further because I cannot believe someone who treats people like this is in healthcare, especially urgent care. Steer clear of HUC, and if you cannot, definitely steer clear of Dr. Tokumura. read more

I was on a cruise and developed a very bad sore throat that was getting worse. So I stopped here on a Saturday and was apprehensive due to the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. First they do not take appointments and there is usually a line of people ahead of you and you will wait. That said they operate efficiently. One person checks you in when you are at the head of the line and they had 3 people checking in patients. That took about 15 min. Then you wait until a nurse can see you to run tests. I requested a strep test. That took about 20 min. Then you wait until a room is available. That took about 30 min. I got my prescription of antibiotics and was told which pharmacy was better. They one inside the target. So overall they were good and I can't really complain about the wait since there were a lot of patients. Recommended read more

Refused to see me for a workman's comp issue (despite being listed as a "preferred provider" by my company's workman comp) simply because I had been to an ER immediately following a significant injury yesterday. Apparently their company policy that they MUST be seen first for anything workman's comp related... This despite the fact that HUCC's voice message specially says in the case of an emergency I should call 911 or go to the ER. It's logically inconsistent. All I needed is a referral to an orthopedist (which I already have from the ER, but the orthopedist won't accept an ER referral for workman's comp unless it comes from a primary care provider). This is a heck of a catch-22, which results from a terrible company policy by the Hilo Urgent Care Center. The woman answering the phone had no empathy for my situation nor interest in advising me in how else I might proceed. I would not recommend. read more

Honestly worst experience with a medical professional ever, Dr Steele made me feel so stupid when I went in to get help for a positive covid test. The nurses at the front were great and wanted a doctor to look me over because I was having difficulty breathing. I didn't ask for them to get a wheel chair and push me in but they did. I was crying because I was scared and my body ached all over. I have never felt this way, naturally I was scared and crying when Dr. Steele was assigned to my room. She said "I'm going to give you a shot of medicine" She didn't tell me what it was so I said no and before i could even ask her what it was she left the room saying "I'll give you a minute" When she came back into the room she had the most unprofessional attitude I have ever seen a "doctor" carry. She said "i don't know why you're crying and you should go home" She refused to give me the shot I was so upset that I went back out to the front to ask for a different doctor to administer the shot but there was none on duty so I waited in my car but she didn't come out. so I left without the medicine because I became increasingly uncomfortable with the thought of that person giving me a shot in my arm! I didn't know if she would retaliate and have a harsh attitude again. She obviously doesn't enjoy her job or doesn't enjoy helping others. Which is extremely sad and disappointing to see in our local Urgent Care. If you have an option I wouldn't see Dr Steele. I was not looking for antibiotics I know you can't treat a virus with them. I was hoping for the steroid she offered in the first place I promise she is not compassionate or kind don't wast your time, see someone else. I'm sure i'm not the only person she treated that way. It was very expressed that she would be the one to give the injection even after I asked for someone else. No nurse was ever going to give my an injection it was going to be Dr Steele. Very informative with a upbeat personality who took his time to address to my concerns. This is the first and only Urgent Care I will go to out here on the east side of B.I.--My 11 year old was so sick and from the check in to the assessment to seeing the doctor the experience was A plus. I had no problems checking in on the I-pads (I can see why others may be upset about this because I would say it is not a proper form of check in for a senior citizen or someone not tech savvy) however the front admin was very helpful and quick to respond/follow up to my check in. Additional paperwork was given however it was quick and needed to be filled out as that was my first time there so I did not find that a problem as I understand verification and reasons why we were there was needed. We waited 5-10 minutes, got called in by the triage for assessment and that is where I was awed! The triage staff (Dominic was his name) was informational, very helpful, took swabs of my son's throat and nose to verify if he was positive for strep and flu right there in office and checked everything head to toe on my 11 yr old. Once they confirmed everything he put us in a room for the doctor, she was amazing, so nice and took a look at everything regarding my son and was very patient listening to everything we had to say. My family left there confident knowing and feeling like we were safe and cared for and went straight to the pharmacy we requested to pick up my son's meds for all his problems! He had the flu, ear infection and positive strep throat poor guy :( Hilo Urgent Care thank you so much to the front office for being so awesome, Dominic and The female doc that helped us (I think her name was Andrea), you made our day especially my son's!!! Honestly, I wish I had read through reviews before going here. Check-in staff were wonderful. Dr., not at all. I'm almost afraid to leave a review because of the comments left about Dr's leaving specific codes on patients' paperwork, stating they are difficult, aggressive, and argumentative. I definitely got the vibe I could be labeled as such if I attempted to speak up about my concerns. Right off the batt, I was scolded for how I handled my symptoms the last few weeks. Was treated as if I was antibiotic seeking but offered them condescendingly. This was an odd response since I thought it was appropriate to come in to have symptoms checked if they are progressively getting worse? At no time did I ask for them either. read more

I went in to see if I could get something for a sinus infection (maybe ear infection, too). Dr. Tokumura came in and asked me my symptoms so I told her what I was experiencing. She then asked me if I had a fever. I told her I don't think so to which she responded, "if you have a fever, you're sick. If you don't have a fever, mweh." She then told me that I have to take into consideration that we have two volcanoes erupting. What does that have to do what my illness???? She told me that she felt comfortable prescribing a low dose antibiotic. When I got up to leave, I guess she saw that I was not pleased by the expression on my face - especially when I told her if the antibiotics don't work, my next course would be the ER. She then took off her mask and started on me like I was wrong. I told her that she spoke to me just like my doctor did - no compassion at all!!! Then she told me she doesn't appreciate being spoken to like that!! To which she replied that she was going to give me antibiotics but if I didn't want them she wouldn't call it in with a condescending voice (she also started raising her voice to me). I told her call it in because I need it. When I started for the exit, I heard her say "wow!" Like I was in the wrong for speaking my mind. She shouldn't be in the medical profession if she has a heart like stone. I will file a complaint with the Hawaii Ethics Commission. read more

Had to post this very positive review after all the negative reviews literally slowed me down from obtaining medical care after injuring my hand yesterday in a stupid (my fault) accident. The injury was not at hospital emergency room seriousness, so I really wanted to try an urgent care. The too many negative reviews I found here on Yelp and in Google for ALL the urgent care places made me doubt even going, but the injury was nasty-looking and I hadn't had the recommended tetanus shot in decades so I decided to chance it. Hilo Urgent Care was great, fast, polite/friendly folks, took care of me with appropriate treatment, gave me that tetanus shot, prescribed some meds, etc. All good. Total time spent there was one hour - I suppose I was lucky as it wasn't too busy. If the parking lot is full unfortunately you'll just have to wait your turn. First time visitor there so they have you enter your info (name, address, employer, phones, insurance info) on one of the two iPads mounted outside the front door (COVID restrictions!). Luckily I have two insurances so no co-pay. Yes, I think we should have universal health care so everyone doesn't have to worry about affording to stay healthy and get taken care of! Then you sit in your car until they call you in. Rich took my vitals - very friendly and competent young man. Then I waited briefly in a small treatment room until Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Andrea Warsh came in and examined my nasty laceration. She did a great job irrigating/cleaning and examining it, and determined stitches were not required/advised in my case. She prescribed some antibiotics and an ointment and gave me care instructions, and Rich came back to redress my wound. So my experience was excellent, and though I hope not to need care anytime soon, if I do I won't hesitate like I did yesterday to go seek care at Hilo Urgent Care. read more

Dr. Tokumura lied on a report as to why an examination was not done and even went as far to paint me in a negative light saying my appearance was unpleasant...welll duh! I'm not feeling well! Because I made an informed decision on what would be best for me and my situation given her responses to my questions, she wrote down I was "demanding" and even put in quotations something I never said and I know I would never say something like that. All in all the report she put out leads me to believe she is unprofessional, takes things personal, will be vindictive to "stick it to you" and can't be trusted because she is clearly looking out for her own best interest. Whoever said, "Doctor knows best," clearly has not met Dr. Tokumura. read more

Full of baloney!!!! Daughter went get checked because eyes. Dr Warsh prescribed something but never informed what diagnosis was. Wife and I were concerned because no information was given to grandparents other than prescription. Called and receptionist Joel said Dr Warsh not in and does not want calls. Very sarcastic attitude hardly any information was given and then today they informed my wife that she has "Pink Eye!!!" WTF!!!! We sent her to school after Dr Warsh note saying she can go back???
