Sure, but when you factor in the cost of fuel and the time spent driving to Oakhurst just to save a few dollars, the difference doesn't always make sense. I feel this store is sometimes held to unrealistic expectations for what it is. This isn't a Whole Foods or a Vons -- it's an independent neighborhood grocery store serving the local community. For the services they provide, I think they do a great job. The staff has always been helpful, friendly, and willing to assist whenever I've needed something. I haven't tried the deli yet, so I can't speak to that, but overall this store does a great job filling an important need for the neighborhood. read more

If you guys can't help somebody in the deli, you should close it. It's February 28th 2025 , about 330 so you can check your record. Whatever young man is working in the deli probably shouldn't be there, I don't know if there's a sign he can hold or a chair he could sit on to keep it from floating away, but those would be much better uses of this individual's talent. I was the only person trying to get some lunch meat and I was told that it's gonna be a a while....... My goodness this isn't that complicated. I've lived up here for over 20 years. I rather enjoy the market, but some of these younger kids that are working there I'm not sure if they're helping you guys much. I don't know why there are negative reviews for this store. It's normal for a smaller store with less volume sales to have higher prices. I go there when I don't want to drive further or to get one of their delicious burgers from the deli. Their double cheeseburger is awesome. read more

Covid 19 has in the past 4 months taken over 109,000 American lives. Officials agree: to prevent the spread EVERYONE needs to 1) wear a mask, 2) social distance (6+ feet) and to wash hands frequently. No staff were wearing masks and none were social distancing. The gal in produce, when asked why, launched into rant saying the CDC doesn't know what they're talking about and how dangerous wearing masks really is. Then I asked the guy at checkout why not, and he said the owner doesn't require it! This reflects very poor judgement. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I think this store is great. Yes, expensive, but it's a grocery store in a remote area. They do a good job keeping the shelves filled and some of the people are wonderful. My daughter and I had to stop there to get just a bag of coffee at 8:20 pm... Yes, I am being particular. We walk up to the automatic door and it does not open. Now some of you might say, "well, it didn't open they must be closed." Except, I have seen on many occasions they turn the sensor off 20-30 minutes before they close and patrons just push the door open. So we push the door open, walk in and we are accosted with a snide and sarcastic "hello, we're closed!? Didn't you see the door was locked?!" from the elderly black curly-haired manager behind the gift wrapping station (what used to be their VHS rental counter). That is how long I have given this store my patronage since DAY FREAKING 1! So I obviously pointed out to her, and I apologized to her, that the door was not locked but just turned off and that there was no sign stating that they were closing early. Seriously, it's the last Saturday before Thanksgiving and you close early!? Additionally, have some decorum and put a sign in the window if you have to close early. Or better yet LOCK THE FREAKING DOOR. Next time, don't act like it's the customer's fault for not knowing you closed early and treat them rudely. Guess I will have to contact the Health Department for selling thawed out and refrozen Ice cream. Which is a California Health Code Violation! Don't think I didn't notice this happen multiple times this last summer! Whoever reads this, if you look at their ice cream and there are ice crystals or it looked like it snowed all over their ice cream DONT BUY IT! It means they have let their ice cream melt, reach above 41 degrees for longer than 4 hours, and then they refroze it instead of doing the sanitary and right thing of tossing all compromised products. read more

So not only did the installation of the neon Vegas sign completely ruin the aesthetic of living in the country, but then they had to increase the number of floodlights and brightness of said floodlights and leave them all running 24 hours a day. As if that weren't bad enough when their obnoxious burglar alarm goes off it frequently last between 30 and 45 minutes. Tonight we're at an hour and 20 minutes and counting and yes it's 3 AM. let's not even talk about their ridiculously high prices and lack of selection. To be fair, the people who work here deserve 5 stars, but the rating gets lowered for the store because: 1. Prices are pretty high for many items. I do most of my shopping in Oakhurst and shop at Hillside for smaller, last-minute items. 2. They don't sell alcohol. It's their right to not sell it, but I think they should offer it. There's a liquor store next door, but again - overpriced. 3. The produce section is not the best quality. The produce is often over-priced. I realize owning a grocery store in this area can be very challenging, but I think they would gain a regular customer base if they lowered their every day prices a bit. It's very convenient to have this place so close, so more often than not, I'm ok with paying a little more to prevent having to drive to Oakhurst. I'd definitely recommend shopping here, even if it's just to keep them in business for the convenience factor. read more

Fantastic local store. Great deli, make the best burgers, and I buy the best tri tips, chicken, etc from the meat department. Hillside is close to home, clean and bum free. No vagrants standing outside to approach you and no alcohol or tobacco products sold to attract them! Most items are slightly overpriced but, gas to Fresno, Madera, or Oakhurst could easily eat up the savings if only shopping for a few items. Fresh veggies usually look great and the bins are well kept. The meat from the butcher is top quality Angus beef and awesome cuts. Milk and cereal are so overpriced that I make certain to plan for those elsewhere. Other than the prices, this place would earn 5 stars. read more

The owner does not care about the people who live near the market as the alarm started going off around 2:15am and still is, 5:00 am. We have been visiting Hillside Market ever since they opened. The staff is helpful and friendly. They help us out with our groceries. I currently have vision and mobility issues and cannot drive to other markets. Yes the prices are higher, but what do you expect in a remote location where they are charged more for groceries and other items by the distributors. read more

Though a little on the expensive side, I love the idea that I can get some specialty items that I can't find anywhere else. Salt Water Taffy and they always have beef specials on a Friday, plus they have Greek Gods Yogurt which I can't find anywhere else unless I go to Fresno, which is too far away. I could go to Oakhurst but it would cost the extra in gas -so I may as well spend it in Hillside. I also appreciate how clean it is and secular. I shop at Hillside a couple times a week when I need to pick up one or two items I have been doing this for about 5 years and I get cash back a lot of times. Today I bought a package of rolls for 2.99 and that's all I got I asked the checker some old guy I have never seen before for 15 cash back and he tells me I have to spend 5 bucks to get Cash back, I asked him since when and he says since March because people don't buy anything and want cash back ( this guy was kinda of rude about it) I then told him you can't get cash back without buying something he had no answer for me . That's not very good customer service towards people who shop there a lot. And I agree with Bobby about the prices and produce and a lot of times they have flies in the bakery case. read more

This is not a market that you can afford to shop on a routine basis. Many prices are quite staggering, and simply not justifiable. This market filled a void in the Yosemite Lakes/foothill geographical area. And while HIllside might be forgiven a certain premium for it's convenience, their prices are for the most part over the top. Meat and produce are of surprisingly poor quality, especially when you consider that this market overlooks cattle country and the produce center of the nation. It is evident that Hillside understands it's niche, and that it exploits it to the fullest. read more
