So good! Stopped in to grab a sandwich before heading home. Spent the last three nights at Nelson Lakes doing some backpacking and fishing. Worked in grocery for 33 years so I notice the small things in many stores. So first it's clean and well stocked, we were greeted politely...always nice. At the deli counter we were promptly asked if we needed some help with a smile, order given and made my to the restrooms which were clean. Picked up our food and waited a short time in the line and quickly got checked out with a smile. We ate outside at one of the two tables provided. Oh yeah, the tri-tip sandwiches are really good. Received shortly later and went to check out. The worker was kind. Paid for it with good day wishes! Lunchtime! Tri-tip sandwich split. My half was Really DELICIOUS! This is a great local store. Lot's of items to choose from. The Deli is great too, sandwiches, The Best Fried chicken on the mountain. And other assorted fresh items that you are going to want to try. Great variety of snacks, produce, and drinks, stock up before heading up to the lake. Easy access, fast check out by live people instead of self check out. They also sell boxes of firewood, and have a never ending supply of ice for those hot summer says out enjoying our mountain community. Just be polite to the locals and pack out what you pack in. read more

I shop here as a last resort. While I am in search of bargains, I aimlessly roam around the store, where the prices are exorbitantly high. Bakery delights, a treat I adore, yet here they cost twice, the cost in Clovis or Fresno. Thankfully not everything is twice as expensive but you can bet higher than most places. We were not sure what to expect going into MarVal given that we were pretty far out from any other grocery stores, but we needed to buy ice and some cold food items we couldn't get in Fresno since we had no ice chest. The staff here was really friendly and helpful during our trip and pretty balanced as far as where they were throughout the store. We never had to go far to ask something. That was great. We looked for our stuff and found all but 1 thing on our list was available here, but it was by no means a vital item. Most stuff was pretty close to regular grocery store prices that we were looking for. Orange juice and ice were the only things that stuck out to me as dramatically more than my normal store in town. Everything else that we needed was within about 50 cents of what I see in town, which isn't too bad given the convenience factor here. It's definitely a great stop for odds and ends but I dont see myself doing all my Shaver shopping here. read more

Nice grocery store for snacks and such when passing by Prather. Decent prices. Nice staff. They have a deli there and the sandwiches are very good. They also make a mean breakfast burrito. OK, 5 stars is a bit much, but I don't understand most of the complaints here. This is a very decent grocery store on the road up the mountain. This shopping center is our usual stop for gas, beer and some fresh produce and occasionally a sandwich. The grocery store has everything you would want from a normal supermarket. Prices were reasonable. I'd say a four-star small supermarket with an extra star for the location and decent hours. read more

Still going to Mar Val every Wednesday for my lunch. The deli staff is incredibly friendly and having been someone that once worked in a grocery store deli, I can tell you the very last thing they want to hear is someone ordering a sandwich. But these women are great and act like it's a pleasure to make one. I was there just yesterday and the deli girl who calls me "Mr Clark" (I wish) made me yet another great sandwich. She forgot to put the sub oil dressing in it but it was still a great sandwich. She suggested a pepper turkey instead of a regular turkey and I'm glad she did. Even w/o the delicious sub oil dressing, I enjoyed the sandwich so much. She added extra waxed peppers for me and they were great. They offer free packets of Best Food Mayo and I always add a packet to each half of my sandwich. Always turkey and cheddar with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions, waxed peppers and sub oil. Then I always get an ice cold Mountain Dew Code Red 20 oz. bottle up front when paying for my sandwich. I can say that I never look forward to running pest control route work in this area because of the insane drive time between services and all the windy dirt roads but I always look forward to lunch time at the service deli at Mar Val's Market! GOD, they are great! All the employees are incredibly friendly and those 10 minutes of eating one of the sandwiches seems like Heaven! Way, WAY, better than the ultra boring and overpriced Subway in the same lot and way better than the Pizza Factory, which is 3 stars at best. The only other restaurant I'd consider eating at in that lot is Velasco's Mexican Food. But man, Mar Val Deli is the best in the area! read more

This is my favorite supermarket! Only 5 minutes from home and it's stocked with all the fresh food I could ever want. Awesome steaks and fresh produce. Saw a bottle of alcohol. It was 500.00. I checked and seen the MSRP is 110.00. 390.00 mark up! Great way to treat your local shoppers. That's price gouging. Left my number with the shift manager and he said he would contact someone and call me. NEVER called me back like he said he would, even days later! Another manager text me after reading my review and I sent her the link indicating the correct MSRP from the manufacturer as she had inquired. I noticed I was wrong and read the wrong information. The MSRP was actually 90.00 making the mark up 410.00 above the MSRP. She Never contacted me again. read more

Nice, friendly customer service. Nice selection of a variety of food pallets. I believe they kinda have to strive for variety being they are the only(larger) market in this area, besides Ponderosa Market in Auberry, until you get to Clovis. I love their ice cream selection, which I frequent about twice a week. They are open, I believe, until 11 p.m. I was a bit shocked upon hearing this since it seems this town shuts down mostly pretty early. Early, meaning 8 p.m. early on a Friday evening. I am still pretty new to this town, so it will take a little bit of time adjusting to this. It doesn't seem like they get enough customers to stay open till 11, but I assume it is for the later "night" crowd that might have a hankering for a late night treat possibly from their delicious-looking bakery section. I usually go screaming through Prather in the wee hours of the night, but have had to travel in daylight a couple of times lately, on the way to Huntington. At Marshall Station, I got the call, we needed ice cream, and since it was during store hours, I told my crew I'd pick it up at Mar-Val on my way through. Not only were they helpful to the max-they carry Fresno State ice cream. (it's in a case at the back of the store) Soooo yummy! Amazingly, when I'd picked up Fresno State corn at the Gibson Market earlier in the day, I was bummed that I couldn't get their ice cream too. (too many hot stops along the way and no cooler chest with me!) Imagine my gang's delight when they found out their strawberry shortcake dessert would be accompanied by Fresno State vanilla ice cream! It was a BIG hit! Cruising the aisles, I "found" a bunch of other things we "needed" and hadn't gotten in town. Their employees are not only nice and helpful, but also fun and personable. The traffic is much better in the middle of the night, BUT Mar-Val is definitely worth a stop on a daytime trip. (Next time I'm going to try their beef jerky!) read more

Masks aren't enforced and I rarely see staff sanitizing. Everything is over priced, one time I bought 5 bags worth of groceries for $220. I would never buy anything from the deli. Nothing in there is clean and the food always looks old. read more

Great small town super market with a great deli. Fresh made sub-sandwiches are superior to the Subway a few doors down. Selection is just slightly less than what you would find at a chain market in Fresno/Clovis. They even carry some oddball items that are hard to find normally. Friendly helpful staff. Prices are fair but slightly higher than the valley, you're paying for the shipping up the mountain. A great place to stop by on your trip up to the mountains to stock up. Love this store! Whoever is doing the purchasing is doing a great job! The same goes for whoever is managing the store! While many people stop here to pick up a few items they might have forgotten on their way up to Shaver Lake, this store is the real deal for regular, normal grocery shopping. This is a friendly neighborhood market with excellent service as well as selection. The deli is expansive, the gluten-free section well stocked, the veggies and fruits fresh, the meat selection great, and all other necessary items on hand. In this era of big box stores, it's nice to shop at a traditional market that focuses on customer service and needs. read more
