Wow, food was fancy for a pub, I had the sea bass and it was divine. A bit pricy, however worth it.

Parsons nose. Originally, a few hundred years ago in…read moreEngland, the pygostyle was called the pope's nose; I very much doubt that this gastropub would want to re-name to the original irreverent phrase for the derrière of a bird. Four of us dined here, with a log fire burning. It also is exactly what it claims to be: a gastropub. We've been here a few times and the food is usually memorable for the right reasons so we brought friends along who hadn't been before. On my last visit I'd forgotten my phone so I couldn't photograph the exquisite duck pasta I had (which is still on the menu and one of our guests chose and found it delicious too). This time, with phone available I've provided pictures, or as an American chum calls this practice: food porn. I don't see it that way, but I suppose it takes all sorts. Our servers were very affable and friendly. I started with the chicken liver parfait, which came on sourdough toast with a lip - smacking spiced apple style chutney. The chicken liver was smooth, light, mousse like, and delicious. In fact delicious sums up all the food here. I don't know how it happened, but parfait, which just means perfect, that was normally associated with sweet, cream - based desserts, has come to describe savoury food. My wife had a salmon tart to start and declared her food as lovely. Now I've a confession; I've never before eaten venison, so when I saw a venison ragù main, with favourites like pasta, parmesan, pine nuts and raisins I thought; sold. It was really very tasty indeed, with deep, complex rich flavours and I enjoyed the venison, but this dish would just be as good without it. My only niggle was food temperature: the food should have been much warmer and the bowl too should have been really hot. Parmesan crisps would be an added flavour hit. My wife had the battered fish & chip main. This was delicious fresh haddock, superb chunky chips and mushy peas. These weren't just any old mushy peas they were perfect mushy peas. If the fish was cooked with the option of tempura-style batter it would be truly wonderful. We all settled for coffees at the end then as darkness fell and autumn chill pinched we departed for Belfast to hear Andrea Bocelli. Some days are diamond.

My wife and I passed The Pheasant every day as we travelled home from the festival. Today I got my chance to pop in...was I in for a treat. The interior decor is definitely period and works really well....check it out!!It has a great location and there is ample car parking. Absolutely superbly decked out inside and staff excellent. I went for the calamari and Caesar salad. When it arrived it was huge and delicious-the Caesar must have been the best (tastiest and creamiest) I've ever had. Calamari cooked to perfection and in a lightly spiced batter (I was expecting more). As a starter it was excellent value and big portion well presented. Will be back for more!!!!

I was lucky enough to have them cater my wedding and the food was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We had a beautiful chicken dish with a sweet potato side, and soup also to start, and a trio of mini-desserts to finish. My husband and I were allowed our own meals, I had sushi followed by duck, and he had steak and chips (he is a straighforward kind of guy!) We had an evening with the two sets of in-laws one night when we got to sample a selection of meals in order to choose our wedding menu. I've never felt so spoiled in all my life. The atmosphere was very special, and we were treated like royalty - the chef came out for a chat with us afterwards which was very thoughtful. Food just kept coming, delicious and beautifully presented, which wasn't a suprise considering the chef had recently left a job in the Ivy to come and work here. For our evening buffet they served us gourmet hot dogs and burgers from an open barbeque outside, with carmelised onions and relish - people went back several times! There was a vegetarian that we forgot was coming to the evening do, and they sent down to the restaurant to get her a selection of cheeses and bread - and they never even billed us for it. Angela who looked after us throughout our wedding was cool, calm and collected and made everything run like clockwork. I would highly recommend The Pheasant if you are looking for caterers for an event, and even for a special night out, the restaurant itself is perfect.

When we came here for the first time last year we had read some pretty poor off putting reviews and after trying it out ourselves we were pleased and relieved with the food, the price and the service. We decided that the poor reviews were largely unjustified. This was our third visit. The food that we had was once again very good, not haute cuisine but very good, especially for the price. I rook photographs to include with this review. Two very good freshly prepared poppadums with three different dips: an onion & chilli with a real kick, a yoghurt based and the ever present mango chutney. Starters were chicken pakora and a seekh kebab starter and both were excellent. The mains were two good tandoori mixed grills with a modest portion of mixed meats and king prawn. These came with really excellent curry sauces a pilau rice and a boiled rice. We ordered an extra Peshwari nan which we paid for along with a large 600ml cold cobra beer and a quarter of wine. Less than £12 the lot. We had plenty of good food. Service by the same waiter, still courteous, unobtrusive and almost deferential yet a bit quirky but not mega friendly. Maybe language and/or cultural reasons - no real issue. The place is a bit wiffy not overpowering rather it's noticeable. We were the only diners just up to departure when two folk came in. The decor is alright, the chairs comfortable, enough space on the table and good background music, played at a level allowing for conversation. It is a bit dated, a bit worn, but again hey ho at this price. Once again we found this experience to be alright. Once again I don't recognise the other poor reviews, they simply and thankfully aren't reflective of our experiences. Finally a tip if you have a coupon take a print out with you; there's no phone signal inside the restaurant.

There is a wide selection of meals available and not being very fluent with Indian cuisine our waiter Rav was more than willing to offer suggestions which were great each time. The decor is quite dated but when you go out for dinner I don't think this matters much! I will be back again soon :)

Bar Retro, while being super stylish, does it in a way that it still fits in with the picture perfect traditional surroundings in Hillsborough. Aside from the Bistro, Bar Retro also comprises a modern cocktail lounge, club, and café. I had a two course lunch (unplanned) because upon viewing their menu, I was delighted to see that they did flatbreads with hummus as a starter. If you know me, you will know that I could absolutely live on the stuff, and it's not often you see it on a menu, so it would be a shame not to seize the opportunity when it presents itself! For my 'main' dish, I had the chicken with feta and olive salad, which was absolute perfection. There are so many other things I am dying to try here, and with the prices so reasonable, I will definitely be back!

We were not escorted to our table and it was sticky and untidy on arrival. We complained that we had not booked in for the cafe and so they eventually found us a table half an hour after we had arrived. There were very long waits for the main course and the dessert. The food was nice enough but to be honest you can get similar meals elsewhere plus better service. We ordered an Americano at the end and were given a filter coffee - we asked whether it was an Americano and the waitress said it was an "Americano Filter"... enough said. We were charged full price for the whole meal without anything taken off for the hassle and all the waiting. To conclude, do not bother going here. I'd recommend one of the other restaurants in Hillsborough if you are trying to decide where to eat because there's no way that their service could be any worse than this place! For the price you are paying I expect high service and good food!!!
