Update: they did it again- they managed to get my tortoise in due to a cancellation when no other vet could see him until at least May. They were so kind and gave him care I hardly see for reptiles in other places. Both the nurse and vet were very gentle with him and very straightforward about what was going on which I appreciate-you never love to kept in the dark when it comes to your pets health. Overall I would recommend Hillside if you're an exotic animal owner, as they seem to be very knowledgeable about exotics and treat them as just as important as dogs or cats, which I've noticed many places tend to not. read more

We just had our first visit here with our puppy and everything went great. We have a 7 month old Belgian Malinois and most people are very intimidated and afraid of them but they were very welcoming and very friendly and the vet tech was super super nice. She was loving on her and got down on her knees and was really connecting with her which really made us and our dog comfortable and we are looking forward to seeing her again for sure read more

Really disappointed to write this review, as we have had great experiences, but have recently had a major issue. Our dog was rehomed to us in 2017 in which we had her medical records transferred from another clinic to Hillside Pet Clinic. Since we had had our dog we have gone in to Hillside 4 times 1) to get spayed 2) general check up and 3&4) emergency visits. At no point was vaccine expiration ever brought to our attention. We are in the process of sending our dog to training school, in which the program requested proof of vaccination for 4 vaccines. When we called Hillside they said they had no vaccination records for her. This is extremely frustrating on two different levels 1) we were never informed of vaccine status from a general health and preemptive maintenance situation and 2) this has created a major hurdle for us to get our dog into her program. Unfortunately, our dog is going to boarding/training as she is reactive and needs 6 weeks of training before we have a child in August. Hillside said they would not be able to get us in for any vaccinations sooner than 4-6 weeks. I get that we should be on top of our dogs vaccination status, but I would have also thought that our clinic who was even last seen in November of 2020 would have kept us up to date. I spoke to a representative 2 hours ago, requested to speak to a manager and have not heard back. read more

Vet quality has diminished over time; much better in 2011. Now I know why our vet left the practice. Admin is old outdated slow and inaccurate. Management is now "officially" woke. Don't go there you will regret it; guaranteed. read more

We got a new puppy and visited every vet on the Southside of Anchorage. These folks were clearly the best. We took Modi in for his well puppy visit and our thoughts were confirmed. I'm really glad we chose them. read more

This place is a great vet clinic. They average about the same as everywhere else in town for price(which let's face it isn't cheap). What I really like about them is they are honest and up front about their prices unlike, other vets I've contacted. They try to be flexible to what you can afford, and generally everyone who works there is very nice. My dog had surgery there last year, and I will most defiantly be going back in needed for any of this needs. read more

I hate leaving bad reviews, but I had such lack of service and bad experience that I feel I have to share. My dog had gone to this clinic her whole life, 11 years. I called on a Friday to try to get an appointment as my dog was throwing up, and left a message that it was very urgent with all of my information . Waited for a call back, it never came. I took my dog to Pet Emergency and she ended up dying. It's not their fault my pet died, but never even getting a call back to see how she was doing, or if I was able to get her care, after 11 years, I can't help but feel they just don't care. I know they are busy and it's hard to get an appointment, but one month is more than enough time for a phone call. My advice is to find another vet. read more

My room-mate introduced me to the people at Hillside Pet Clinic when I rescused my dog at the SPCA here in town. The staff and the doctors here are all incredibly friendly and helpful when they are looking at your pets. You can tell they aren't just in it for the money and they all legitimately love and care for animals there. I'll be returning to this Clinic with my pet until I leave Alaska. Definitely a clinic worth looking into if you haven't found a consistant one to do checkups with in Anchorage. read more

I transferred to this clinic about a year before COVID but EVERY time I call the wait is ridiculously long to see a vet even though I am a regular customer. As COVID happened it is obviously harder to get in than ever. However having just called for normal vaccinations they can't even put me on an August schedule. They put you on a waiting list. This is frustrating especially for people who, like to call ahead and plan out. They refuse to use the calendar and instead a vague waiting list. My vet, John is great but I can never get in with him. I just swore on the phone and they have a policy if you swear you can no longer be a customer of there's. Probably a good way for them to get rid of their patient wait list. Choose another vet. I thought this one would be smaller and more personal but they are overwhelmed and unable to deal in regular appointments. read more

Let me start with today was my 3rd visit to this clinic and none have been good. But the Dr we saw the first time was nice. However when we got there for our appointment someone at the clinic had canceled our appointment without letting us know. We did get seen that day. This visit was pre COVID. The 2nd visit was for one of my dogs to get an allergy shot. What a disaster. They expressed his anal glands which was not requested or authorized. And they tried to charge me for it and also his shot. The kicker this visit also Duplicated charges for a dog they had never seen. So today my 3rd visit I brought all my dogs for routine care. And to make sure the correct dog got his allergy shot again. Given the last mess up I made sure they knew who needed the shot. And what they all needed. Come to find out 10 mins later the manger came out with 2 of the dogs being taken in but not seen and told me the tech didn't like me being clear and they would not see my pets. I made this appointment 3 weeks ago and told the front desk our needs. But was not relayed to the tech staff. I understand COVID 19 is hitting everyone hard but that is no excuse for the poor communication between staff and care for any animal. read more

I've taken my dog to this vet clinic about 4 times. The first 3 visits were a 4-5 star rating with the younger male vet with a beard. This last visit I'd rate a negative if it were possible. I saw a different, also younger vet. DON'T take your dog here for end of life care. It was an absolutely Awful experience, and if you care about your dog, you will walk out feeling more devastated than you ever imagined possible. This is the Last thing anyone needs. I'm writing this review so others will be able to make better informed choices, and choose a vet clinic that honors and respects both pets and people. read more

On 13 September 2017 I brought in my 5 year old bearded dragon Rose for a check up since she was going into burmation and this was her first time doing so. I had the misfortune of having Dr. John Mastrobuono checking her out. After checking her out and telling me she could have had a number of different sickness and that she could have spread it to my other two dragons. He advised me to have her vaccinated and then to re-hydrate her intravenously. Through out the next few hours of very nerve racking waiting in the exam room we were given the bill of close to $800. When driving back home she started to make noise and then went through a series of strong seizures and then died in my arms. We immediately called and returned to the clinic and was seen by Dr. Mastrobuono who checked her out and then confirmed she had passed. His attitude was horrible and I had to have my friend deal with telling that we wanted to have a refund. The clinic did refund all but the doctors fee since the manager felt that the doctor should still be paid for his time. Rose had kept me calm through my PTSD and depression since retiring from the Army. The reason I am writing this now instead of right after she passed is I wanted to make sure it was as balanced as possible. I feel that Dr. Mastrobuono was too inexperienced and trying to up sell services she did not need and Rose died because of it. A part of me died when she died and that the staff or anyone even bothered to call a day or so to at least do the check the block call to say anything. I know its hard to find pet clinics with exotic animal doctors, but this was the worst experience I have had with any veterinarian and will never be going back to the clinic. read more

I have a Yorkie rescue with little or no teeth enamel, either as a result of a genetic defect or a puppy disease. My regular vet knew what it was an was prepared to treat, but had no previous experience with the malady. I googled around and discovered Dr. Fredrickson at Hillside Pet Clinic has the experience I was looking for. He put me on 6-month cleanings and I've had terrific results so far. read more

Our little bunny had a medical emergency. He had symptoms of bloat and had not eaten or pooped for over 12 hours. We genuinely were concerned that we might lose him if we did not get him medical care beyond what we could give him soon. After many unsuccessful attempts at getting him an appointment with various vet clinics, we found Hillside Pet Clinic. Jackie Frederickson, though fully booked, had us bring our bunny in to the clinic to see us between appointments. Her level of care, knowledge and concern for our bunny went above and beyond anything that we expected. He has since made a full recovery due to the extensive treatments that they provided for him. We cannot recommend Jackie and all the wonderful staff at the Hillside Pet Clinic enough. read more

I've been taking my puppies to Hillside Pet Clinic and I am very impressed with the front desk staff, vets and technicians. The front desk ladies jumped up to help me with my pups when they were going 2 different directions and I was having a hard time getting thru the front door! lol The veterinarians are very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. We can't thank the doctors and staff of Hillside enough for saving our fur child! The front desk ladies (Beth, Cindy and Diana) went out of their way to comfort me during an extremely scary time (not to mention running out to my car to carry my 70 lb dog inside) and Dr. Holmes and Bre and the rest of the medical staff worked miracles to save our baby. Dr. Holmes also went above and beyond by being available for questions and comfort while our dog was recovering. This wasn't the first time she went above the call of duty for us, however. On top of all of this, the ladies at the front desk truly make this practice a place where we always take our fur babies - they are the best! read more

Performed tests I did not consent to. Took my dog in for a GI problem. They gave me a quote for all the things they could do, including X-ray, in-house labs, send-out labs, antibiotics, and an anti-nausea injection. I said I only wanted the X-ray. They had me sign the quote for everything, even though I only wanted one item. After the X-ray came back negative, I asked them to perform their in-house blood work ($25 cheaper than the send-out and does not include certain labs and urinalysis, which my dog did not need). The doctor came back to the room and told me they had the send-out labs processing. When I said I had asked for the in-house blood work only, she said "Oh, well, we already have the specimens, so why don't we send them? He's a 10 year old dog so you might as well." I asked how they obtained the urine specimen (he had no urinary symptoms). They performed an ultrasound-guided cystocentesis, without my consent (this involves inserting a needle through the dog's abdomen into his bladder and withdrawing urine). I had no recourse, as I had signed the quote that had everything on it (since they would not provide me with a quote for just what I wanted to consent to), and it was too late, they had already performed the procedure. They performed an invasive test that I I did not consent to and that my dog didn't need done. The doctor seemed to have a good knowledge base, but the clinic as a team left me feeling like I had been taken advantage of, and my older dog went through a procedure he didn't need. I know I can trust the staff and doctors with my pets here. My dog has a chronic condition that requires medication and blood work. ALL of the doctors and techs have been amazing while working with us. They're not the type to just pile on unnecessary blood work/appointments. If they suggest that something needs to be done, they'll always have a valid reason to back it up. We currently live across the street from another vet, but have no desire to switch from Hillside. We went to Hillside when our 11 year old black lab started limping and wouldn't put weight on her back leg. We went to Hillside where the vet thought it was a torn muscle, yet he ordered $500 to rule out a broken bone (this was 4 weeks after she started limping). Given she was weight bearing, I didn't think it was a broken bone and didn't agree with the request. We decided to try some medication and see how she responded. She responded well to the first set of medication and was running around like a puppy again. When that ran out, she went back to limping and would no longer put weight on her leg. We asked for more medication and a prescription. We got push back because we didn't do xrays. Reluctantly, they gave us medication and we saw little improvement on the second set. We asked for more and they refused to give more medication until we did the xrays. Tired of seeing our dog in pain, we went for a second opinion. The second vet looked at our dog and told me that she thought is was bone cancer and not a torn muscle (she did this without even touching or examining the dog, she saw the growth from the moment we walked in). She asked if I'd do xrays ($100) to confirm. We did the xrays and sure enough, it was bone cancer and we had to put our dog down. Hillside was not at fault for the outcome, however, they seemed more interested in running up the bill than getting to the cause of this. The other vet knew without touching my dog what it likely was. The fees at this vet were exorbitant and while they cared, they also seemed to want to run up the bill. We spent two or more months working through this watching out dog in pain. If this would have been diagnosed correctly the first time, we could have ended our dogs pain. I won't be back. read more

I took my 4 month old puppy to Hillside Pet Clinic to have an abscessed tooth pulled. After waiting for 30 minutes in the exam room to be seen, the vet came in, examined the puppy and sent the tech in the room to have me sign forms and give me the bill. The Estimated bill was $433.00-$600+. The tech left the room, the vet came back in. She says,''Oh the tech didn't give you all the fees." The vet left, the tech came back in(again) and gave me forms that had additional charges. I then asked her if that was all, or if there were any more surprises. She said no that was all. So then I was instructed to go to the counter and pay the low end of the estimated bill. When I did the lady at the desk said,"$500" as if it were nothing at all. I said,"They said it was the low end of the estimate($433) she said,"Yeah, $500." (again, as if it were chump change). I said,"No, the low end of the estimate was $433. After looking at the form she corrected herself and agreed it was $433. So I paid it and left. A couple hours later my phone rang, and it was the clinic saying the puppy was ready to come home. I asked if there were any additional charges, she says,"Yes. $133." So I got to the clinic paid the bill right when I walked in(there was no one waiting). I was then directed to the exam room to wait for the puppy and the vet. The vet came in a few minutes later and began to tell me that they don't make any money, they don't work for free, and I was combative for asking if there were anymore surprises. I explained to her that I work for a living and it was a very big bill for me to pay. I would only find it fair to know the whole cost of admission rather than wait to see how much further it was going to go. She then cut me off mid sentence and said,"I'll go get your DOG." She came back right away and said,"HERE'S YOUR DOG." And she walked into another room. So, no discharge instructions, no thanks for your business, nothing, just take your"dog" and go. That's what happened to me and my puppy at Hillside Pet Clinic. read more
