I proposed at Hillbrook Inn this weekend. Everything was perfect! The first time I called, I was told to reach out to Mark Parsons about planning the proposal. He was excellent! We talked multiple times leading up to our visit, he asked me for everything that I wanted and he made it happen seamlessly! We couldn't arrive until 7:30 on Friday so he set us up for a late check-in where we just walked into our house and our door was unlocked. He made reservations for us at the Main House for breakfast, made us reservations at the Spa House, and even "acted" as a bystander during the proposal. He organized for a photographer to be there for the moment, and we were able to get a ton of photos after inside the house and outside! I really appreciated the fact that Hillbrook used a lot of local businesses. We had a charcuterie board in our room when we arrived and almost all of the meats and cheeses were local. The breakfast menu had a section that informed you on where the foods were grown/raised. The coffee was from a shop down on Main Street which we even stopped at before we got on the road to come home! I'm very glad with my decision to choose the Hillbrook Inn as where we got engaged. This is a lovely getaway just a short distance from the DC area! The spa is so clean and inviting. Andrea was kind and gentle for my first massage experience, explaining the service and offering additional options. I would recommend even just coming for a spa service! The buildings and grounds are well kept and romantic. We enjoyed seeing a horse back riding lesson next door while walking around. If we had more time, we would have enjoyed playing a game of chess with the large lawn pieces or smores around the fire pit. We stayed in the lookout room and found it charming and clean. The charcuterie in the mini fridge was a really nice touch. The dining rooms are beautifully decorated and a warm, romantic atmosphere. Our dinner server Jessi was very accomodating and friendly. The food was deliciously made and presented. We enjoyed the little extras that weren't listed on the menu like the tapenade "amuse bouche" and ginger ice palate cleanser. However, I am only giving four stars because I was disappointed by the vegetarian dinner entree option. A cauliflower steak offers no protein value and I left still hungry. This wouldn't bother me if the price were half as much. It seems like it would have been easy to offer a lentil and/or chickpea stew with the same tikka masala sauce the cauliflower was served in - still vegan/vegetarian and much more filling. Or a pasta, tofu, tempeh... so many other options that could have better justified the price to me. At least breakfast was incredible and filling with the eggs. Overall a lovely stay but for dinner I would recommend that vegans/ vegetarians consider whether the price is worth it! read more

We stayed here for our anniversary this weekend. We stayed in the Summer Cottage room and brought our two dogs. Being able to bring our dogs was the selling feature for us to come here. We like to bring them with us on all our trips. The Summer Cottage room was nice and cozy. I tried out the large bathtub, and it was actually too big for me, but I still enjoyed my bath. Im sure taller people would love the tub. The showers were a little bit worn and not sparkling clean, but it was neat to have two showers in one spot. The removable shower head needs to be replaced as it looks awful. The mattress was comfortable, but the bed bounces easy. We didn't hear any of the guests around us and those guests also had dogs. The room was very quiet and had a fridge and microwave in it along with a TV. The floors were tile. The blinds worked good and the room looked decently cleaned. The grounds were nice and adorable. There was a-lot of deer to see. The trash can outside wasn't emptied the entire weekend. There is a parking spot across from the Summer room, which we found convenient. The breakfast was pretty good, but they were not included with the stay and cost $30 each, which we thought was way too high. The dinner menu is very limited, but the food was tasty and we enjoyed our dinner. We ate at the main house and it is so adorable with the decor and design. The back area where we ate was built in the 1700s. The souvenir area is very limited and pricy. We got salt and pepper shakers, and they are cute and tiny, but no price was marked. I thought since they were so small that it wouldn't be that much and didn't ask the price. Turns out they were $38, so be sure to ask prices if you don't see it. The staff were very friendly and kind. We also had a couples' massage at the spa. The ladies that gave us a massage were nice and the massages were a little bit too gentle for us, but still relaxing and we did enjoy them. Overall, we enjoyed the stay and it was a cute place to spend our anniversary. read more

This is a hidden gem tucked away in West Virginia gave us the most relaxing mini vacation my partner and I needed. We stayed at the Hillbrook Inn for two nights and felt as if we were staying with family. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful! The room was clean as was the rest of the inn. Additionally, the restaurant offers an array of delicious meals and an unforgettable experience. My only complaints is that the bathroom was small in our room, but that could vary from room to room, the shower head was extremely hard and felt like is was going everywhere, and lastly beware if you are allergic to bees/wasps. I got stung inside the restaurant while having dinner. The waiter, who was extremely apologetic, shared that the hotel had just sprayed and occasionally bugs get inside, which is expected when staying in place literally in the middle of nature. However, the staff were extremely concerned for my wellbeing and immediately made sure we were taken care of. Please don't let this be the reason why you don't come here. I assure you we still had an amazing experience and would love to go back if ever in the state, again! The hospitality was truly exceptional! read more

Had an incredible two night stay at Hillbrook. The Winter Cottage was inviting, well appointed, had a gas fireplace, large shower, and deep soaking tub. Housekeeping was on top of everything, quick and seamless. We chose to have breakfast both mornings and dinner both nights at the Inn. The food was plated beautifully, included some local ingredients, complimented the season, and absolutely delicious. The cocktail list was creative and wines were varied, something for everyone. Our servers at all meals were friendly, accommodating, and efficient. Also had spa services that were top notch, the ladies in the spa go over & beyond to pamper you. My husband esthetician also recommended a couple local spots to visit, she was spot on with those recommendations. Cannot forget the front desk services, we were greeted upon arrival and given all the info we needed for a perfect stay. Anything you need is a quick text away. To say our trip to hillbrook was disappointing would be an understatement. I first want to start out by saying none of this review applies to the spa treatments we received as those were excellent! Lisa and Cindy were professional and we had a fantastic couples prenatal massage. Unfortunately our stay on the 4th of July in the overlook room was awful. Check in went ok even though one of the girls working the counter couldn't be bothered to look up from her phone. This was the only interaction we ended up having with the staff of the inn. After coming back from exploring the area and getting dinner we were excited to relax in our "luxury" room only to realize how dirty and uncomfortable it was. And as the staff leaves at 7pm, there was no one around to help us remedy any of the problems. The shower was disgusting with black buildup in the grout and a ceiling vent filled with what seems like years of dust build up. The towels were extremely rough and stiff. The rugs were filthy and there was garbage on the ground from a previous tenant. The barely functioning ac unit was filthy with dust build up. There were mysterious white stains on pillows. If you wanted to open up the windows to get a cross breeze into the stuffy dusty room you would be met with filthy windows full of webs and dead bugs. Blinds and furniture was broken... I realize Hillbrook inn is an older building and that comes with unique layouts of rooms, but I expected it to at least be clean. What was even worse than the dirtiness of the room was how uncomfortable the bed and pillows were. It was so bad neither my husband or I could sleep at all. The Inn has even been alerted that I was pregnant, but the pillows were completely flat and useless. This combined with the room being stifling hot and dusty made it impossible to get any sleep. We were so miserable that we were up all night waiting for it to get light out so we could drive home and get some sleep. We canceled the plans we had for the day and didn't even stay for the included breakfast because we were so tired. I have stayed in many hotels and inns before, but this was my first time at a 4-star "luxury" resort. We had never taken a romantic trip just for ourselves until now and this was extremely expensive and a horrible experience. We have had cleaner more comfortable rooms at 2-star best westerns... We dodged a bullet deciding not to plan our wedding here. I can't imagine an exhausted bride and wedding guests getting ready in these tiny filthy bathrooms. read more

We stayed at Hillbrook Inn for two nights and had such a great experience. The main house is just incredible. Everything from the European style and unique architectural layout to the elegant decor and glowing fireplace add to a certain charm of the place. It is without a doubt one of the more memorable Inns where we have visited in West Virginia. We stayed at the Winter Cottage, a pet-friendly suite near the main house. Our GoldenDoodle just loved his little welcome package (treats, his own towels, and doggie bowls placed on a cute bone-shaped mat). Honestly, we were surprised that such a nice suite would be pet-friendly...and not only pet-friendly but above and beyond. The little details go a long way and they treated our little Huckleberry like a third guest. Visiting Hillbrook allowed us to experience a bit of luxury with our pet in tow, not something we usually find at nice hotels/inns. Note on COVID policies: We visited a week or so after they had reopened from the COVID-19 lockdown. They have a new safety policy in place which included among other things wrapped cups and remote controls, limited staff/guest interaction, and increased sanitation efforts in public places. We greatly appreciate their commitment to guest safety although the new guidelines meant we were unable to dine in their gorgeous dining room. Seriously, just google the pictures and you will fall in love. We did still order their 3-course dinner which was delivered to our room. The meal was fantastic and the Honey-Lavender Panna Cotta deserves an entire review alone. Mmmm. We would love to come back for the full dining experience when the dining room is reopened. This review is for the spa. My massage was ok. Not the best nor the worst I've ever had. The "team" picture isn't accurate. My masseuse wasn't pictured, nor was the masseuse that my friend had. I paid extra for a 90-minute massage, but it was actually only 70 minutes. I understand allowing for time to undress and dress, but my massage stopped 15 minutes early, not 5, as posted in the "spa policies". read more

Our fourth visit - and we enjoyed it as much this time as ever! This was our first trip with the pups (allowed in the Cottages). We stayed in the Fall cottage where we arrived to find food bowls, potty bags, treats, and water bottles for the pups - and towels to wipe their paws. It was very nice. Breakfast and dinner at the main house were also amazing as usual - a very special culinary treat. I had services at the Spa which did not disappoint! I have been going to Hillbrook every year for four years now and they never disappoint. The grounds are so stunning, you don't want to leave. The rooms are beautiful and unique and some are pet friendly! The soaking tubs are worthy of the name, they have a fire pit, a "life size" chess set, hammocks, swings, and I haven't even gotten to the food. Their chef is inventive and adventurous and every taste was pared perfectly with the wine the sommelier chose. Their bar tender Christian really stood out as he practiced making his new fall time creations with us and his "s'mores cocktail" is gonna be a great hit. He was also personable, friendly and pours a fine drink. I always get a spa treatment and this time my husband joined. I got the 24k facial and he got a massage and both of us were so relaxed we booked a second night just to be able to revel in the luxurious experience. stayed in the South Suite for two nights between Christmas and New Year's and a pretty good experience. not the best inn I've stayed at but overall okay. this place is literally in the middle of nowhere (please note that this is my opinion as a New Yorker). i have to say that the pictures of the inn and the room were better online than in person. the road leading to the main house is all gravel and a bit treacherous to drive or walk across. I've seen some posts complaining that the rooms are too cold and that the temperature can't be controlled in the individual rooms. They must have seen these posts and made some changes because the room was pretty warm. But yes you cannot control the temperature of your own room in the Hawthorn House. The main thermostat is in the hallway and though it looks like it was previously locked, we were able to lower it (it was set at 72). Way too high in my opinion especially when many of the rooms have gas fireplaces. Biggest complaint was that we didn't receive any housekeeping services as housekeeping was between 8 and 10 am and we were booked for breakfast at 9 am. We were in our room until about 845 am (understandably) and had the do not disturb sign up. But we didn't come back until after 10 am and the room still wasn't cleaned. Luckily we were only there for 2 nights so we just made do without. At more prestigious places the housekeeping staff is aware of your dining reservations. I must say the restaurant was amazing and delicious and the complimentary breakfast was really tasty and filling. The dining room is quite beautiful and rustic on the inside. If I was ever in the area again I'd come to have dinner and maybe stay one night, but definitely wouldn't make a trip out here just for the inn. read more

Beware the breakfast scam! We were under the impression that breakfast was included. They ushered us into the dining room and gave us a menu with no prices listed except for a list of "add on" items. The food was the worst I've ever had at a breakfast restaurant. Insipid, cold, undercooked.... just plain bad. We were surprised to receive a bill, and even more surprised that each meal (no add ons or drinks) cost $30!!!!! On our way out we noticed a small side table with a coffee maker and a tiny pastry of some sort under glass cake dome. Maybe *THAT* was supposed to be the free breakfast? It didn't look like any continental breakfast I'd ever seen. It really felt like a bait and switch and I found it very off-putting. That said, the rest of the stay was lovely. Hillbrook Inn is a charming storybook house (country mansion) with fantastic staff, excellent staff and great food. We came here to celebrate my spouse's birthday and it was a great time all around. The Inn itself is like a fairy tale chateau built in stages leading up (and down) the hills of the property. Truly unique and VERY charming. The architecture is one of a kind. The grounds are relaxing. The staff is so attentive and professional. We had a seamless visit from beginning to end. Truly the staff is well trained and focused on making sure our time was great (it was)! Dinner was absolutely stunning. We started with foie gras and salmon. Both were fantastic. The foie gras was kinda savory vs. sweet with a sweet potato puree served alongside - a perfect accompaniment. The salmon was topped with creme fraiche and caviar. I don't think I have ever had such pure luscious salmon trimmed so thickly. Main courses were lamb chops cooked expertly and tenderloin. Both were top notch. To find such outstanding food in the middle of the hills of West Virginia was a very pleasant surprise, to say the least. Even if you do not stay at Hillbrook, you definitely should eat dinner here! The rooms are a bit of a disappointment - not as luxurious as the public rooms. To be honest, it would be hard for the guest rooms to match the plushness of the glorious cathedral ceilings and large multi-paned windows of the living room and dining room. Here's why we wouldn't stay at Hillbrook Inn again. When we arrived we checked in, we were given the information on our room, the "Sunset Suite," located about two miles from the main house. In spite of seasonably warm weather, our room was FREEZING cold upon arrival. We looked in vain for a thermostat in the suite itself. We found the thermostat outside the room in a common area covered with a plastic shield and a phone number to call if you wanted the temperature changed. We did so, only to reach a recording. Several attempts over the next hour reached the same recording. Several messages were left. Some of my wife's were addressed while none of mine were. Now I'll skip ahead a bit. We were told that even though the reception desk closed at 8:00, if we needed any after hours adjustments we could call the hotel and the answering service would put us through to the innkeeper. After a LENTHY conversation with the answering service representative, who is apparently obliged to write down virtually every word said, the service rep attempted to put the call through to the innkeeper who did not answer the phone. In short, during our stay, not a single phone call to the front desk or innkeeper was answered. Oh, and there is a little ironic touch to this story I'll save for the end of the review. OK, it's not the cold room that rules out a repeat stay. It's not the lack of control of the thermostat, although that adds a little touch of "college dormitory" to what is supposed to be a high-end experience. No, neither the cold room nor lack of control would be enough to be "the last straw." But the frustration of unanswered calls in spite of our having followed the explicit directions of the management we found to be inexcusable. Not answering calls required for basic services is a bridge too far. It didn't ruin the entire stay, but it certainly tainted it. There was also a problem with a counter-intuitive lock to the door to the back porch. We couldn't lock the door until a maintenance person was summoned to show us how. OK, fine. But the problem could have been solved on the phone without the wait. Apparently, the sticker that explains how the lock works was missing, although there was no sign of there ever having been one. OK, now the good stuff. The suite was ample, the bed comfortable, the setting lovely. Stepping on to the back porch and looking to the left there was a sea of corn as far as the eye could see! Impressive sight to these suburbanites! We spent two nights. We were there with two other couples. We ate dinner at Hillbrook's restaurant the first night, and as the menu was limited, among the six of us, we managed to sample just about everything on it. No complaints! Though preparations tended to be on the simple side, the ingredients were of first quality and flawlessly prepared. Had the menu been more extensive, we would have returned for a second night. On our second day at Hillbrook, the ladies of our company all treated themselves to the on-site spa. All were pleased with the service. We had the included breakfast on each of our two mornings and once again, no real complaints. Both the food and the service met even heightened expectations. Although we didn't take advantage of it, the common area of our building featured a kitchen with various snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. OK, now the promised irony. When we first discovered the thermostat in the hallway, my wife took a picture of it. Before the six of us went our separate ways, the other two couples came over to see our suite. As we were showing them the thermostat we had told them about, my wife noticed that someone had punched out a piece of the plastic large enough to reach the buttons of the thermostat with a pen or even a finger! We could have changed the temperature ourselves! I thought the opening must have been made while we were there, but no! Closer examination of the photo my wife had taken showed that we were not the first to have been frustrated by "big brother" handling the building's climate control from afar! So, in sum, there are lots of good reasons to stay at Hillbrook and not many reasons not to. But the lack of responsiveness and the frustrations of unanswered phone calls for us were disqualifying. I came 6 years ago and had the best time. My most recent visit wasn't as great. First off, the road leading into the inn has over 50 pot holes... Secondly the hotel smells... kind of old? The Inn and the spa has this dusty old smell. My room and the lobby at the smell. The only room that didn't was the dining room- which smelled like fire. I do recommend the restaurant, it is good. I got a massage, and thought it wasn't great. I stayed in the Overlook room. It is cute! I did have to get out the extra blanket and bring out the heated. No matter what I did, the room was so cold. Also the sink water never got warm, always freezing cold every time I washed my hands. The shower had some hot water though. I thought the Inn did WELL with covid protocol, for that I went with 4 stars. It is a hard time. read more

Was really hoping to leave a good review but there were too many things not quite right... First this is not close to Harpers Ferry or Charles Town you have to drive 20 mins to either. Second we pre-ordered vegetarian meals and their version of that was to just leave out the meat. Really unacceptable for any place to pride themselves on their food. The diner was SO mediocre at the$85pp price but you are so far from restaurants you almost are forced into it. Even though we had a full kitchen they had removed all of the items, which I understand is for COVID cleaning but they didn't tell us this in advance and then they tacked on an extra $25 cleaning fee. I stayed here for two nights as part of a packaged tour so I can't really speak to how much it cost. However, I got the sense that it was pretty pricey. The food was OK. The staff was mostly very friendly but pretty disorganized. While our room was clean it was also quite small and cramped. Apparently there's no housekeeping service because our beds were never turned. Finally, our entire party was locked out after returning from dinner in Winchester. The grounds were beautiful. However, I wouldn't recommend staying here. read more

We stayed in the South room in the Hawthorne house. When I walked in the front door and looked around I thought, yep. This is my dream house. Great location and grounds. Beautiful room. Nice bathroom. Amazing restoration. Some constructive critique for the owners- -Get a new Kcup machines. It is on its last legs. -Make sure there is always cream for coffee. Nothing worse than waking up without cream and being told it would not be a priority for housekeeping to get some. We left after 45 minutes and still no cream. -the breakfast was just OK. There were no choices. I would have appreciated some fruit. Not everyone likes eggs. - it would be very helpful to have a magnifying mirror in the bathroom for those of getting older... -hire a gardener. The main hotel is fabulous but weeds were overgrown. Some were 3 feet tall and I was tempted to pluck a few as we walked around. So, the south room is beautiful but people should know that it is very dark. The only natural light is a door to the patio which has blinds on it. The patio is not private so the blinds must stay down. We were around mostly at night so it wasn't a problem. Also know that people may be enjoying the patio right outside that door. We were fortunate that no one was enjoying it while we were there, but the table was full of food bits and evidence that it had been used recently. Other reviewers have complained that the room above the south room is noisy and they are absolutely right. We were lucky that the people up there made noise around 10pm and went to sleep. If they had been up and about we would not have slept a bit. Ditto for people hanging out in the main house. Not a quiet room and people can here you too. All in All, a beautiful place. Would I go back, maybe. We would stay in a different room. A bit pricey, but a bit nicer than most bed and breakfasts. read more

What a wonderful experience! We had planned our trip to Hillbrook in for April of 2020 and had to postpone. I'm so glad we still got to go! The staff are friendly and accommodating. We stayed in the Serenity Suite and got the dinner and spa packages, as well. The check-in process was smooth and simple... no contact. The room was spacious enough for the two of us and warm/cozy on the slightly chilly April weekend. The bed was fine for a couple nights, but a little too soft for my liking. The spa experience was great! We got a couples massage and the therapists did a great job! The best part of the weekend, by far, was the food/dining experience both at breakfast and dinner. The breakfasts were delicious and luxurious -- two courses (one savory, one sweet) and perfectly filling. The coffee was also really good! Dinner was something special. After having zero dine-in experiences since March of 2020, it was so wonderful to have a lovely and beautiful four course meal to enjoy with my husband!! I have Celiac disease and must keep a gluten free diet and the menu was entirely gluten free with very few exceptions that were not missed. I can't wait to make this trip a "thing" for us. We just returned from a wonderful weekend at the Hillbrook Inn. While we had high expectations before our arrival, those expectations were universally exceeded. The Hillbrook Inn is a great escape from the stresses we face daily. We stayed in the "Overlook" room in the main lodge. The photos on their website accurately illustrate the charming nature of this room. Although what can't be shown in photos is how comfortable the bed was -- great linens. Please note that the access to Overlook is via a series of wooden stairs on the outside of the building. It's great for privacy but would be a difficult if you're mobility challenged. The restaurant was excellent. While the choices were limited the execution was superior. The real surprise with respect to the restaurant were the creative choices on the included, cook to order, breakfast menu. I had Eggs Benedict but the banana crepes were tempting. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her quinoa bowl. I would be remiss to not mention Christian, our bartender. His hospitality and creative cocktails made a memorable stay that much better. Thank you! We really enjoyed our time at Hillbrook Inn, but there were some rough spots, and we wanted to share them. We believe the Hillbrook Inn could be worth visiting, but believe there are some constructive criticisms that should be taken seriously. We would recommend visiting, but do not recommend on a weekend or when prices are elevated, and really only recommend visiting when prices are below average. There are a few reasons below that made us we give the Inn a down rating, but the chief among them is difference in the way the Hillbook Inn and the staff say they will handle allergies, and the way the allergies were actually handled. Pros: · The grounds and the main Inn are beautiful. · Breakfast is excellent, absolutely excellent. · Dinner, if served in the dining room is very good. A touch pricey, but very good. The chef and the staff are very personable and good at their craft. · The wine list for dinner has good breadth and is reasonably priced. · Steve, the chef while we were visiting, provided an excellent and welcoming experience. Thank you, Steve. Cons: · Do not under any circumstances get the dinner delivered to the room. You pay the same price as eating in the restaurant portion of the Inn, and the food is delivered in small food containers that you would get if you got food to go from Applebee's. I understand the food is the same, but charging $200 for a party of 2 for in room eating, and then just showing up and leaving at the door in the snow is borderline insane. If it is a COVID concern, they need to rethink what they are serving and how they are delivering the food. We expected when we paid $200 for dinner and paid a delivery fee that the food would be delivered hot and set up in our room. Instead, as mentioned, it was set down in the snow in to go containers. We read other people say it was not worth it, but we did not listen, and we deeply regret the purchase. We were so upset that we almost did not eat in the dining room the next night. Bottom line DO NOT order food for delivery in the room. The price and quality of the delivery is not worth the money. · The website and the staff say that they adjust food for allergies and will make a list of allergies, but when the food is cooked and delivered the list of allergies is completely ignored. On the paper we received when we checked in, the list of allergies was noted, but again, when the food was delivered both nights, the list of allergies was completely disregarded. This can obviously be a very big deal. It was made more upsetting due to the amount of money we spend on the meals while staying at the Hillbrook Inn. We ordered food both nights, and both times the allergies were disregarded and did cause an issue with the meals. Do not take down the allergies if you are going to ignore them. · Would recommend not ordering the Charcuterie plate. The meat selection was very mediocre and included what was very clearer lunch meat ham. Also, the $50 plat is served on a paper plate and in small to go plastic containers. I am guessing this is a COVID policy, which would be fine, expect when you order food in the Inn, all of the meals are served on actual plates. I am not sure where the COVID exposure increases if the $50 dish is served on a real plate vs. a paper plate. May not seem like a big deal, but when you are spending fine dining prices, more should be expected. · If visiting in the winter, be advised that the road is somewhat gravel and mud. It is very challenging in a smaller car, and creates an even larger mess walking around and heading into your room. · The cottages are nice, but the "remodels" feel like they may have been done on the cheap and affect the ambience of the visit. The fireplace was a gas fireplace and clearly had the propane supply turned way down. The bathroom remodel was done poorly. The shower head was loose, the mirror only went 5 feet high, the tub was rusting, the refrigerator door opens into the front door of the cabin, and the heat and air conditioning did not work in the bathroom. Overall, the experience was good, but could have been much better. The Hillbrook Inn has a lot of potential. The property is beautiful, and all the makings are there for it to be a 5 star get away resort. As with most fine dining and high end resorts, the difference in good and great comes down to execution. The Hillbrook does a poor job on execution. If the Hillbrook Inn wants to be regarded as a destination B&B there are simple things that can be done to make that a reality. Again, we enjoyed our stay, but we were disappointed by the lack of attention to detail by the Inn. We would likely return if they could make some basic changes, but we would not recommend someone visit and pay the current prices with the expectation of commensurate service. read more

This was an absolute treat for a lovely getaway in West Virginia . The Inn and the surrounding countryside are beautiful ... we saw wild turkeys and deer on our approach to the Inn . The food , we felt - dinner and breakfast were exceptional . The staff could not have been nicer .... We do hope they fix the potholes on the one lane road going in as they are difficult to navigate in the day and worse at night . We do plan on going back soon . read more

What an amazing property, staff and service!! My wife and I stayed in the Serenity Suite for the first night of our Honeymoon. Naturally, we arrived a bit late, but check-in couldn't have been easier. This suite is located above the spa in the Gatehouse, a bit removed from the main Inn. The entrance is around back, up a wooden staircase with a small private deck and chairs. This gave us extra privacy, which we enjoyed immensely. We started with a glass of wine out on this back deck that looks out over the woods. The stars were out and summer forest sounds in full swing for a perfect setting. The room is extremely warm, cozy and comfortable. We were super excited to find that it came with a sauna and full soaking tub, both of which we enjoyed. And the tub accommodated the two of us just fine. There is a fireplace, which would be nice in the winter. I was amazed to show up at breakfast and have the server call me by name even though we hadn't checked in with anyone. She knew my diet restrictions and had already incorporated into our breakfast that morning. We sat at a cozy wooden table with fresh flowers and a candle overlooking the beautifully landscaped lawn area. Delightful way to start the day! Although this was our only meal, I can tell you the staff is top notch..! We then wandered the grounds a bit. There are spacious lawns, a creek that runs along the main lawn area and one of those oversized lawn chess boards where you walk on the board, pick up your piece and move it to play. Just a wonderful little paradise tucked away in a dreamy mountain scape. read more

Like a magical fairytale cottage! My boyfriend surprised me with a trip here for July 4th, and I cannot say enough great things about this place. The grounds/room: When you first pull in, you're just stunned at how charming the property is, and how well kept the grounds are. Loved the ponds, and enjoyed watching thousands of fireflies behind the main cottage at night. We stayed in the East Suite, which is in the Hawthorne House (5 min drive from the main property). It was perfection! Four poster bed, huge bathroom, and the best part was the sitting area next to the cozy fireplace. The staff: SO friendly and welcoming, and were very accommodating (we attended the 5 course dinner and the chef prepared vegetarian substitutes that were satisfying and delicious) They even surprised me, with my boyfriend's help, with chocalte covered strawberries and champagne! Thank you to everyone who made our stay so memorable. The food: So good! We attended 2 breakfasts and a 5 course dinner. The dinner was outstanding, definitely worth the money! On July 4th they had a red/white/blue themed breakfasts so they made red velvet pancakes with cream cheese whipped cream. Hands down one of the best things I have ever eaten! The location: It took us a little under 2 hours from Baltimore to get there, and the property is located within 25 min of other great attractions (hiking near Harper's Ferry, dinner spots in Winchester, vineyards in Berryville) Can't wait to go back for another visit! read more

We found Hillbrook through a deal offered on Living Social and were not disappointed. The grounds are gorgeous and the staff friendly. I had gotten confused while booking and they graciously accommodated my mistake as best as possible. We were greeted with a drink and tour before being shown to our room. We stayed in a suite in the Hawthorne building which was about 2 miles away from the main inn - the room was gorgeous, comfortable, and immaculate. We signed up for that evening's three course dinner (you can choose 3 or 5). It was a bit pricey and formal for our usual tastes, but everything was fresh, delicious, and they accommodated my vegetarian diet without a hitch. Chef and staff follow up with you after the meal to ensure everything was to your liking, and I overheard the chef very graciously taking a preparation suggestion from a guest which I thought was very nice. All the grounds are beautiful, with little details scattered about including hammocks and Adirondack chairs. We were happy to explore before returning to our room to relax for the evening. iPads are available in each room for guest use, although sadly, the wifi was down during our stay. Each area also offers a keurig for coffee and tea. Breakfast the morning was less formal but equally delicious. As a vegetarian I did not feel jipped or disappointed - the kitchen clearly knows what they are doing. We checked out happily with an agreement that we definitely want to return.
