Great music! Excellent whiskies and beers. Ambiance like a really nice barn :-)…read more We wanted a Memorial Day (2025) daytrip from greater-Baltimore. Harper's Ferry is very close! Like an hour (ish) drive. So what's happening in HP? The Barn out Washington St. had a MemorialDay weekend all-day mostly-country music event 2pm to 10:30pm! Very nice. They have a great little bar inside, and sometimes have food from one of the restaurants across the parking lot, or just walk over for takeout, or i think i read that they deliver here. By the way, parking can get a little tight for a bigger event like this one, but we were early enough, maybe 1pm, and we scored a space when someone left. I might as well add that there's several clean restrooms sort of across from the bar. We settled into a huge comfy couch near the back of the hall, behind the seating for roughly 30 at tables and picnic tables. There was also seating for roughly 20 at tables out on a deck. The first solo singer-guitarist, D.C.'s Kate Smiles, had a lovely voice and sweetly original interpretations of rock and pop and country songs that i knew, and a presence that made me say, Hey, Wow, I can relax in this mellow mood with a really nice whiskey from a list that my local bar would envy. By the way, they were out of the local whiskey, Devil's Due, so i had a warming fiery oaky slightly-sweet Elijah Craig bourbon, neat, with a water back. Mmmmm. The second musician, W.V.'s Andrew Copenhaver, moved among soulful blues and country, some classics, some modern. He could put an edge on his voice, and he could hit some deep bass notes, so it was a real pleasure when he gave us Folsom Prison Blues. When you can hit that low note, you have a right to do some Johnny Cash. By now i was into some crisp local beers. That little bar really has everything, including a versatile bartender who made every drink we knew, and we sampled his skills as the third musician, NoVA's Mark Cullinane, took the stage. He had a wide range of country songs, including a moving original that made us feel we were driving in our pickup behind his dad's. He had a great rich tone and great range. Like the second musician, he used some kind of looper to create full layers of harmony. What with all the beverages, we started to fade a little as the music moved into the set by NoVA's seriously-country Rowdy Ace Band around 8pm. They really lit up the hall and the patio and probably a good piece of nearby Harpers Ferry. We eventually moved on to our reservations for dinner across the parking lot at Snallygaster's restaurant. But that's another story. We had a terrific afternoon and evening. The Barn will definitely be one of our go-to spots in this town, and we'll be looking to hear these musicians again!

I only gave it four stars because the onsight catering isn't the best. We only had salad, soup, and sandwiches which were alright but not outstanding. Unfortunately, I became very ill and couldn't continue with the planning of this event, nor the event itself. Setting aside the sadness I have from not being able to have that special day with my family, I had to cancel. We cancelled In December of 2014 and also were told it was no problem because another couple showed interest. GREAT!!! I had a friend ride by Heritage Hall and took numerous pictures of an occupied event hall. I waited for a refund, waited more than enough time. I contacted Sharon 4-5, maybe 6 times, she can only pass word from Bonnie the owner. Ridiculous!!!! I keep being told I will get a refund...when?! This doesn't sit well with me seeing she was paid from another couple for the same night. I know times are rough for people, but running a business in this fashion doesn't sit well with most. Piss poor ethics if you ask me!!!!

I would recommend even just coming for a spa service! The buildings and grounds are well kept and romantic. We enjoyed seeing a horse back riding lesson next door while walking around. If we had more time, we would have enjoyed playing a game of chess with the large lawn pieces or smores around the fire pit. We stayed in the lookout room and found it charming and clean. The charcuterie in the mini fridge was a really nice touch. The dining rooms are beautifully decorated and a warm, romantic atmosphere. Our dinner server Jessi was very accomodating and friendly. The food was deliciously made and presented. We enjoyed the little extras that weren't listed on the menu like the tapenade "amuse bouche" and ginger ice palate cleanser. However, I am only giving four stars because I was disappointed by the vegetarian dinner entree option. A cauliflower steak offers no protein value and I left still hungry. This wouldn't bother me if the price were half as much. It seems like it would have been easy to offer a lentil and/or chickpea stew with the same tikka masala sauce the cauliflower was served in - still vegan/vegetarian and much more filling. Or a pasta, tofu, tempeh... so many other options that could have better justified the price to me. At least breakfast was incredible and filling with the eggs. Overall a lovely stay but for dinner I would recommend that vegans/ vegetarians consider whether the price is worth it!

We talked multiple times leading up to our visit, he asked me for everything that I wanted and he made it happen seamlessly! We couldn't arrive until 7:30 on Friday so he set us up for a late check-in where we just walked into our house and our door was unlocked. He made reservations for us at the Main House for breakfast, made us reservations at the Spa House, and even "acted" as a bystander during the proposal. He organized for a photographer to be there for the moment, and we were able to get a ton of photos after inside the house and outside! I really appreciated the fact that Hillbrook used a lot of local businesses. We had a charcuterie board in our room when we arrived and almost all of the meats and cheeses were local. The breakfast menu had a section that informed you on where the foods were grown/raised. The coffee was from a shop down on Main Street which we even stopped at before we got on the road to come home! I'm very glad with my decision to choose the Hillbrook Inn as where we got engaged. She loved it and said everything was perfect! We'll definitely be back in the future. Charles Town was beautiful.
