Been meaning to stop in since a long ago Guy Fieri episode of Diners Drive ins and Dives, plus playing Fallout 76. It worked out for us on the drive back from Louisville. The set up is hilariously insane, worth the stop alone. The cashier was fun and friendly, and the graffiti in the women's room was inspiring! I have a basic bitch stomach, so got the "Puppy" with just ketchup. Sproßling got the Mothman, garnished with I believe onion rings and 1000 Island. Husband got his smothered in jalapeños. We split a full size onion rings, which were hot and tasty. We all had Gold Peak tea. The dogs tasted great, if I had a normal stomach I would have gotten a second one. This place is what road trips are all about out. When you're on a multi-hour trip and love to find the quirky and unique along the way, this fits the bill. Tucked away just a few minutes off I-64 in Barboursville, WV, this place offers eccentric hot dogs at a reasonable price. Using all beef dogs they create some wild and crazy options as well as the basics. Surprisingly they have non-dog choices and some vegetarian options too. Look, truth be told the dogs themselves are average, but you're not here just for the food. You're here for the experience. The place is decorated - every square inch of it - with stuff that looks like it came right off the Clampett's jalopy. (Look it up kids.) Bring your aw shucks attitude, because the punny signs are everywhere. And with a little planning ahead, apparently you can actually get married in the Weddin' Chapel. It's tacky and corny and therefore the perfect roadside stop. We arrived around 11:30 on a Sunday and had a short wait. When we left under an hour later, the line was creeping towards the street. Our line moved quickly in part to the friendly staff. The wait for our food wasn't long either. There was plenty of outdoor shady seating, but you can also sit inside in their "renovated" school bus. I don't remember when or where I first heard about Hillbilly Hot Dogs but it has been on my travel list for a very long time. We recently decided to do a trip to West Virginia and of course included this in our trip. When I was looking at their website for hours and such I discovered that they also did weddings and vow renewals. Since it was our anniversary month we decided to book a vow renewal. We had an absolute blast! The venue is super cute, the ceremony fast and fun and the employees are the best! Well this place is not a place you are going to pass by on the way to anywhere you would travel. Our really good friends (the husband who recently passed) is from West Virginia and they spoke of this place. We planned a trip to Williamsburg, VA over the week after Christmas. Coming from SoIN/Louisville KY area we are going I-64 E. About 200 miles later (and about 20 miles round trip out of the way) we ended up at Hillbilly Hot Dogs. So about the food... you'll see the pics of the dogs we ordered. Not fantastic hot dogs, but a good experience. The service was impeccable. If you left a tip the cashier sang a song. She had a really nice voice too! This place has a 3 choices for huge hot dogs with a couple of pounds of toppings. The Homewrecker, the Widowmaker, and Pick Yer Wrecker. We saw a guy and his wife eating one as we were leaving, and it was epic. It was a fun place to go to see some the nostalgia in the "old-time" things hanging as the decor. read more

You have to know what to expect, we didn't. It's definitely a roadside hotdog stand that got some national publicity for being "eccentric", but that's all it is. We stopped by at lunch on a Saturday, made an out of the way beeline to try it, and arrived 1/2 hour after it opened. Parking is sketchy. Spots drean with orange spray paint, and not enough of them. We grabbed the last one, up against a building and under a tree. Took a few photo snaps at the chapel and the wall of hubcaps, then walked past unsupervised kids playing in one of the abandoned school buses. The theme is Sanford and Sons meets redneck yard with abandoned cars. Kitchy, sure. Well done? Not so much. There are ways to make something look like that without every square inch actually being junk. Rusty stools (get your tetanus shot before you go), filthy, uncleaned plywood table tops (they need more staff), and not enough seating. Once inside you are shoulder to shoulder with everyone while you stand in line. At least there's time to read the menu. But remember, it's hot dogs. Hot dogs every way, and they sound great on paper, but in reality , there's nothing special at all about them. The chili is about as good as canned, and maybe it is. We got the name sake, the hillbilly dog, thinking it must be what launched them. You can make a better chili dog with a can of Hormel. We tried the chicken sandwich, the barnyard bird dog, which we hoped would be a succulent chicken tender with pickles and American cheese. In reality it was some very overcooked chicken nuggets with what looked like Kraft cheese slices, shiny and all. The bbq sauce wasn't bad, and it covered the taste of the burned breading. The side of fries was what you would expect. Crinkle cut, mass produced and likely cooked from frozen. The onion rings, always one of my favorites, were deep Brown and so overcooked the onion had disappeared. The counter staff were friendly and fun, but a view into the kitchen and no one was wearing gloves, hairnets or even long pants. Not sure it was any cleaner back there than the piles of junk in the waiting spaces, or the unwashed tables in the bus seating. If you happen to be driving directly by this place, sure, stop in and poke your face through their photo op. But if you have to drive out of the way and are looking for good food, do yourself a favor and find someplace else. I know some Hillbillies that would be offended to be affiliated with this place. read more

The hotdogs with a great number of combinations that you can have it with the chili the people the workers it's a one-of-a-kind experience and if you drive by there, you have to stop This place is an eyecatcher when you're driving by there's no way you just can drive by and not stop there. The hotdogs are good. The food is good just the surroundings and the friendly people surrounded by friendly people. Like most, we came here based on their appearance on the Food Network. Additionally, we got recommendations from other vegetarians. We tried the portobello burger and portobello hotdog and I have to say both were really good. There are a ton of options both vegetarian and not. The service was good and quick. As for the ambiance, great idea but extremely overdone to the point of not being funny. Some things were clever like the Spam tin salt & pepper holders. Just my opinion, obviously. Both parking and seating is plentiful, nothing to worry about if you're an oversized vehicle or oversized group. This is one of those places that's a diamond and the rough. You never know you have to come here until you get here and you're amazed that it exists. There is some excellent food but even better people watching. We didn't get to try a homewrecker because they are out for the season however the hot dogs we did try we're tasty and filling. I'm actually glad we only got three instead of four because I would have been full. The onion rings were beer battered and not overly greasy. The variety of hot dogs you can order are endless as well as creating your own. They also have hamburgers but we didn't try any of that We only tried hot dogs. The seating is limited on busy days so if you are staying nearby you can get it to go or if you want the whole experience you can sit in the school bus and eat your hot dogs. On our tour throughout WV for our Fallout76 game, we visited Hillbilly Hotdogs (aka Hillfolk Hotdogs in the game). This was such a fun experience!! There is so much to see here. It's just a ton of fun no matter which corner you take. We ordered three hotdogs, The Harrison, The Mothman, and The Wazzup Dog and a side of onion rings. Everything tasted so good and it's all reasonably priced! We sat in the bus and had a blast reading everything written on the bus and tables. Honestly it was better than I was expecting it to be with all the attention and hype its had. Definitely worth the stop for sure to try it and check out the vibes but can't say I'd go way out of my way for it again. With that said if I was in the area, I would still go back again without a doubt. This is why I'm not losing weight. Because I will go out of my way to eat hot dogs (and onion rings!) instead of finding a healthy salad. But oh, it was so worth it today! Yes, I was here because it was a DDD stop. And yes, it's a good 15 minutes off the Interstate. But wow, this place has character and ambiance and it's just an interesting experience. You won't regret eating hot dogs in a former school bus that looks like it was rescued from a junk yard. I chose the West Virginia Dog (chili sauce, mustard, onions and cole slaw) and the Harrison Dog (chili sauce, nacho cheese, sautéed onions, sour cream and bacon bits) with a HALF order of onion rings. I was at your "restaurant" yesterday at about 2:20 and was appalled to see that NO ONE operating the restaurant cared about a poor woman who fell into a diabetic coma on the ground in the dirt in front of your establishment. Many people asked for sugar and no one responded - you staff just kept taking hot dog orders. No one called for an ambulance either. People then called for a coke. No one supplied that either. All of my West Virginia hillbilly dreams came true the other day. My three year old had been talking about "widing the bus" for days and then he was even more excited to "dwive the bus". The hot dogs were sooooo good, as were the fried mushrooms and fried cauliflower. I can't stop thinking about this little slice of Appalachian paradise. Cool place to stop if you're passing through, kinda in the middle of nowhere along the river. You can order to go from the counter or order to eat in inside the restaurant or outside in the many places to sit. This is conveniently located right off the road it would make a great rest stop. Lots of random junk (literally) you can look at/photo ops. I grabbed one hot dog to go and the service was immediate and fast, got it in about 2 minutes and the girl at the counter was very friendly and offered recommendations prior to ordering. Upon arrival there's an initial adrenaline rush as the ambiance lends to the expectation of a Deliverance-esque encounter. Once the trepidation subsides, and you order your meal the staff is delightfully friendly, and the food is delicious. Rarely do dives featured on the Food Network live up to the hype. Hillbilly Hotdog, located at the edge of Ohio river outside Huntington, WV, not only lives up to the hype--it exceeds it. We ordered the Harrison, StrictlyBusiness, and corndog, and were blown away. The hotdogs had a nice snap and were complimented by chili which was complex in flavor, spicy, hearty, rich. The StrictlyBusiness was especially phenomenal, topped with sweet and tangy e Cole slaw and fried spam and jalepeno! We also got the half order of beer battered onion rings which were so crispy and chili cheese fired which was loaded with melty cheddar cheese and homemade chili. The blackberry cobble for dessert was maybe the best thing of all--the pastry crust was buttery and the blackberry filling was piping hot and sweet, served with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream .
