I guess one never looks forward to an appointment at a mortuary but I could not miss the opportunity to say that my experience at Hilgenfeld was top notch. Karina listened to what I needed and was understanding and incredibly helpful and kind. Their prices are very reasonable and their communication with me along the way has been great. At the most difficult time in your life you need people who understand and can help you navigate the dark time. We had a close friend die in a tragic car accident. We were stunned and really didnt know what to do. The best decision I made was to call Hilgenfeld Mortuary. They are absolute experts! There are suddenly so many things to do when a loved one dies unexpectedly, and they walked us through EVERY detail. Ydiera, who we were working with, was so sensitive and sincere and did not try to "upsell" us or sell us anything we didnt need at our most vulnerable time. I truly believe that God graced us with Ydiera when we needed it most. Again, there are lots of decisions that need to be made, and choosing Hilgenfeld was the best one we could have done. Thank you, Ydiera. read more

I lost a family member in 2023, and the sudden death placed me in total shock. Taking care of logistics was a significant burden, especially since we had to transfer the remains from a foreign country. When I reached out to John Huh, he not only meticulously arranged everything but also showed deep compassion, understanding, patience, flexibility, and empathy throughout the whole process, bringing comfort to our family. John explained things clearly, provided step-by-step instructions, and did his best to save us as much money as possible. He was very organized, trustworthy, reliable, and on top of everything. I did not have to worry about whether things were being done thoroughly and on time; he made the process seamless. Recently, in 2025, when my dad passed away out of state, John Huh again stepped in and provided excellent care. He researched the best way for the out-of-state transfer and coordinated care with other third parties, which ultimately saved us thousands of dollars. More importantly, in honor of my dad, he and his staff personally picked up my dad's remains from out of state and brought them back to California, where my dad was supposed to be buried. Our family felt genuinely cared for. I will undoubtedly use his services again in the future, and I highly recommend his services to others as well. John Huh will put your mind at ease, as he delivers excellent, compassionate service! read more

It has taken me 9 months to write this review. My father passed away end of February 2022 and I chose to have this mortuary take care of the after arrangements. Brett was my coordinator. Mom and I had an appointment set up to review details. He was patience and respectful during this difficult time. We brought ALL of dads things. It felt like endless bags and hangers we carried out of the car for dads casket. Brett helped us carry it back in with a smile and made sure everything was placed according to our wishes. We wanted to use our own projector on the day of service and this really nice Filipino lady helped us coordinate a time and date to go in for tech testing. She was patient and provided ideas on how to make things work for dads special day. On the day of the service, everything was set up to our liking and it really brought comfort and peace to my mother and I. It is never easy dealing with a death but this team really helped us have a good send off for my father. A few days had passed without a call on ash pick up. I called the office and found out dad had arrived back to the mortuary. I scheduled the pick up same day. Overall, I had a very nice experience with Brett and his team. I feel some calls and e-mails should be more promptly returned, coming from an anxious and grieving family member point of view. read more

Compassionate and Competent! My dad passed away recently. I was concerned about the logistics of hospice care and mortuary service as all of the siblings live far out of state. John Huh at Hilgenfield Mortuary was EXCEPTIONAL in coordinating with hospice at the time of death and carrying out every aspect of after-death logistics. He clearly explained the cost of various services and how and when each would be carried out, including transportation, cremation, funeral arrangements, sea burial and death certificates. We were rather indecisive, yet he was patient. He was also bilingual, which made things easy for my elderly mother. He showed compassion and a genuine desire to be helpful in a time of need. Thank you. read more

This is my honest review for Hilgenfeld Mortuary and my funeral director, John Huh. Making funeral arrangements is not something we want to even think about. But when the unfortunate situation arises, there may be confusion and uncertainty about what to do next. This was my situation at my mom's sudden and unexpected passing at age 64. I didn't know where to go. Fortunately, I was referred to John Huh by close friends. I was so unbelievably relieved. Here's why. John is/was: -Genuinely caring and sympathetic to my situation. He walked me through the process step by step and gave good recommendations and options along the way. -Highly trained and deeply experienced. He gave me the best advice regarding coroner case. -Honest and trustworthy. He has my back and I know he is giving advice to the best of his abilities in the best interest of me and my family. -Excellent at verbal and written communication and gets back to you with fast response times. -John went above and beyond to make things very comfortable for me and my family. He takes care of you. The Chapel space is clean, with plenty of natural light and airy. It is a beautiful space. It was great for about 100 people. There's overflow space in case you need it, but I didn't need it The staff is friendly and attentive. Every time we walked up to the front door, there was a staff member to open the door for me. It's these little details that I remember. Everyone who attended had good things to say and a positive experience. Overall, the experience exceeded my expectations. I'm writing this review now thinking back that it was the best decision that I could have made at that time. I highly recommend Hilgenfeld Mortuary because you get great service and excellent value for your money. read more

Amazing from beginning to end. My mother expressed how professional and genuinely caring this team was when she and my uncle were looking for a funeral home. She had found them from our church Sunday notice and they were responsive and very detail oriented. Emotions are very difficult to navigate when you lose someone and I took the role of communicating my mothers wishes to the staff on the viewing and the woman who was with us through it all was phenomenal. I am grateful that they were able to care for all our needs during our difficult loss. We had the same person throughout the viewing, church service, and the funeral at the cemetery. She was very respectful and was well organized to get everything done that was needed. read more

Fortunately and unfortunately we have used Hilgenfeld Mortuary twice. Once in 1991 for our sister and again recently in September for our mother. Both times, Hilgenfeld handled our loved ones with care, respect and compassion. If you have to utilize a mortuary service you want one that is going to be affordable, reliable, and above all responsive. When I called for my mother, they not only were extremely compassionate but also I was able to hammer out the details quickly and get quotes almost immediately. Thank you again, not only for the service with my sister but also handling my mothers body with such care. read more

My family was referred to Hilgenfeld Mortuary through a family member. I remembered the care they provided for my paternal grandmother's funeral earlier this year that we decided to utilize their services for my maternal grandmother's funeral. Our funeral director John Huh provided great care for our family during this difficult time. He was very informative, easy to talk to, respectful and caring. They took great care of my grandma and my family. They made the whole process so easy. If we had known about them when my dad passed away last year, we would have utilized their services than the mortuary we used. Thank you again, John and staff! read more

Hilgenfeld mortuary treated our grieving family with respect, great patience, and wonderful service for our mother's viewing and funeral arrangements. All the staff were quick to respond to multiple questions via emails or phone calls. We worked with Daniel Stiller, Edith (new to the group) and Karina. We had the time to "shop around" a handful of mortuaries for our mother's service. My dad picked them as they offered the most personalized services and flexibility in these Covid times. They offer a 3 hour window in which a small group could pay their respects every hour. The viewing room would be sanitized / disinfected between every group. The service at the church and cemetery worked very smoothly with their direction as well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Hilgenfeld Mortuary to help make such a difficult process run as smoothly as possible. read more

We were referred to John Huh and Hilgenfeld through a relative and I'm so glad we followed through with it. From the very first appointment, I knew we made the right choice. John's caring and kind demeanor made the tough decision making so much easier on our family. Attention to detail was top notch and he was gracious and patient when we needed extra time to make hard decisions. We just had the funeral today and everything went off without a hitch, which says wonders considering how busy mortuary's are during these Covid times. If you have the unfortunate need of planning a funeral, you can bet John and Hilgenfeld will take good care of you and also at a very reasonable price. My family is Forever Grateful. Thank you John and Team! read more

I want to thank John Huh from Hilgenfeld Mortuary, for his amazing care, service, and attention to detail. Under the circumstances, he made the planning process as smooth as possible while respecting our time of mourning. The mortuary is located in a great part of Anaheim, very clean and classy, with ample parking (and street parking), a cozy but sizeable chapel, and ample staffing. Their embalming service is remarkable. I highly recommend their motorcade option as well, which provided a smooth transition to the burial site for our guests. Our memorial service ran smoothly and stress free thanks to the hard working staff. Their coordination efforts allowed our family to grieve and take in the moment without worrying about logistics. For this I am very appreciative. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Hilgenfield Mortuary. Our experience was truly exceptional. Thanks again, John Huh, for being so kind, respectful and considerate to our family, we could not be more pleased. read more

I want to thank Christina and the staff at Hilgenfeld. Christina showed great compassion and patience while assisting my family through the loss of my mother. She walked me through the process taking time to make sure everything was understood. She made the arrangements with Riverside National for my mother to be buried with my father, it was such a relief to not to have had to do that myself. They helped us when we lost my father 13 years ago. They were terrific then as they are today. Thank you Hilgenfeld. read more

My mother passed in June 2020. Hilgenfeld was called by the hospice that she was in and I was very very happy with them. They were very respectful and professional. Mom had been sick for a long time and had wasted away to nothing. They made her look healthy and better than she had looked in a very long time. The whole process was explained and detailed so that we knew what was going to happen. We had someone with us all the time and that person answered any questions that we had. She was buried in Riverside national cemetery with my dad. They took her there and we had the same courteous service the whole way through, I would definitely recommend this mortuary to anyone who's lost someone that they loved. read more

Good morning Nicholas, On behalf of myself and my family, I want to thank all of the staff for the amazing services the mortuary provided for our broken-hearted family. Starting with you, you are such of young, professional, and compassionate individual, there's no doubt you are in the right job. Thank you! Second, the people who worked so beautifully on my husband's make up. He looked so handsome and natural like he was asleep. Thank you! There's nothing better than to keep this image in our memories forever, thank you team. Third, the programs and the cards look so good and almost everyone complemented them, thank you! Last but not least, the crew's transporting my husband were so helpful, respectful, and compassionate that we never felt that we needed to rush to say our good byes. It was our last minutes with him and they respected that. Thank you all for that. There's nothing that we as a family can complain about your services and I feel very happy that I chose your mortuary to have my services when I depart. I can't say enough about Hilgenfeld Mortuary. First of all, my Mother-in-Law passed away recently and we were given directions by hospice to contact a mortuary. The biggest question, What mortuary do you call? We had referrals from but who do you really trust in taking care of your loved one who just passed away. My wife started calling around and she told me her gut feeling told her to go with Hilgenfeld because the employee, Edith, made her feel like a family member. She said Edith was so welcoming, caring and listened to all the needs and request. So a family decision was made and we went with Hilgenfeld to take care of Mom. I can tell you initially I was skeptical because of the location. When I arrived at the facility, I was totally wrong. The facility was beautiful, the parking lot was huge and the staff treated everyone like family. The second you walk in the atmosphere made you feel like you were at home. Nick helped us the night of the viewing and he was so kind and helpful. And on the day of the funeral Jessica and Robert were both the same. All their staff is wonderful. And they really took care of Mom and put our family at ease of knowing all was being taken care of. From the beginning to end, they provided great, caring service, and we would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs any mortuary services for a loved one. I would recommend Hilgenfeld to everyone. Trust me when I say Hilgenfeld is family the second you call them. Thank you for making the process so much easier and comforting when a family really needs it. read more

This family owned Mortuary has excellent customer service from beginning to end. Brett, the funeral director bent over backwards for the family. Not only him but all of the staff that we got to work with. Communication was very constant, all my questions were answered satisfactorily and if they didn't have the answer, the turn around time for them to get back was also quick. The atmosphere was very cozy, even the rooms that we rented where the Family gathered for some food were great. The best thing is that they allowed the family to bring our own food. Assistance was always given when needed. I just commend David the other funeral director and his staff for a job well done! Thank you for caring. read more

I am so grateful for Jerry Ballesteros and the staff at Hilgenfeld Mortuary. They were all so helpful and kind with all of my Dad's funeral arrangements. Jerry was very patient (even though I had a million questions and concerns) and always so caring. He took care of getting my dad's body from the hospital to the mortuary, the embalming, transportation to the church, the cremation, the death certificates and the prayer cards. He also helped set up the Rosary at the Mortuary, the Mass at the Church and helped with the Graveside service too. He went above and beyond to make sure our family was taken care during this heartbreaking time. He made sure that my dad's services were all set up the way we wanted. He was compassionate and took the time to explain everything to me. I truly would have been lost without his guidance and the help of all the Hilgenfeld staff. read more

Compassionate, caring & reliable. My family has used them for decades and they've always come through. Even during Covid.

Losing a loved one is the toughest thing I've ever been through in my life. I lost my dad 8 days before Christmas and my 105 year old grandma exactly one month after. I was very very close to each of them. When you're in such grief, you want to do nothing, but you end up having to do everything. Arrangements for everything (services, flowers, programs, church and internment, videos, pictures, bereavement letters, death certificates, inviting guests, catering, reception, etc), not to mention the organization of things your loved one has left behind. There is barely time to grieve at that moment soon after. We had to do all of this twice in a one month span. Coming to meet Raul and Hilgenfeld was the best thing that could have happened to us after all we've been through. Raul is heaven sent. I've never met a guy so calm, so professional, so soothing to the soul. At first impression he seems to have everything under control, from arrangements, to everything about the service, to connections to every single thing you can thing about. That first impression followed all the way through, not one thing went wrong, and of all the things he had to remember, not one thing fell through. From doing the embalming, to the sales, to the directing, to everything else (answering emails, coordinating, catering, flower, etc), Raul was so outstanding. He provided excellent, phenomenal service for both my dad, grandma, and especially for our family and was consistent in being calm and professional, handled everything with class and respect, and was organized and remembered everything no matter how busy everything was. He was there for every service, from visitation, to church, to internment. We were all thoroughly impressed. 10 stars or more to Raul for his personality, working calmly under pressure, for consistency, being there for everything, remembering everything, and for being so upstanding and respectful. Thank you for having an anything can be done attitude. Thank you also to Hilgenfeld for your upkeep of employing a high quality team working together without fail, for your many years of service, and for keeping outstanding people from the parking lot guys, makeup, techs and assistants, and most especially people like Raul around. Thank you for accommodating our every need, no matter how busy you guys were. read more

Wonderful service, easy to understand breakdown of cost, friendly & compassionate staff.

Let me just start by saying that losing a father on Christmas is the worst pain ever! After going to another funeral home and getting the "package deal" pitched to us (which felt cold and not what we had in mind, on top of that super $$$$) my boyfriend mentioned to me Hilgenfeld. Boy I am so glad he did because it was THE BEST choice for our family. Becky was the absolute best in dealing with the transportation of our father from New Mexico to California. Not only was she interested in what our needs and wants were for a service but she also made sure we weren't getting charged more than we should be. Okay let me also add that what set this place apart was the a la carte service mentioned by another yelper. Becky first asked us what it was specifically that we wanted and created a package that met all those needs even as far as having a small service in New Mexico for my father friends and family who could not make the trip. The day of the services everything went perfectly. Initially my siblings and I planned to have a closed casket and halfway through the services changed our minds. The attendants whet above and beyond to accommodate our needs and I did not get their names but they were amazing! We did have an issue with our mourners bringing young kids who should not have been there and for that we apologize but they handled it in a great manner. Lastly I can't thank the Hilgenfeld family enough for their help and their support. Beautiful!!! I will ABSOLUTELY recommend their services to any one who has lost loved ones read more

I lost my mom shortly after the New Year. In best case scenarios you'll need to deal these things someday. Been through it a few times; I know what to expect and what's involved. Many decisions to make, some fairly quickly - at a time when you're already under stress. Luckily we had some arrangements made - but not all. Like many Yelpers, I place a premium on service and value (combination of quality and price). Had a couple of places I wanted to consider - most people won't look at reviews, or shop around under these circumstances - I think this industry counts on it to some extent. Not me though! After visiting 3 other Mortuaries I told my brother I really wanted to check out Hilgenfeld. We were both very glad we did!! Other places wanted to sell us a package - laced with items we didn't want or need - it seemed these "counsellors" (salesmen) weren't really listening to us, instead going off a script with 3 package options. Enter Becky Field-Areias, owner of Hilgenfeld, she's the type of owner Yelpers rave about. Family owned and operated for four generations - Becky's daughter is learning the business and may be the 5th generation of the family to take over someday! We felt welcome and comfortable with Becky right away. As the owner, she wasn't concerned about making a commission, or selling a package - she understood we were shopping - and appreciated our business - by listening to what we wanted and giving us exactly what we needed - also, she worked with us to get the right price! They have packages available if you want one - may be right for some - but they also have an itemized, Ala Carte price list with each service described clearly. You know exactly what you're getting and the cost. This was a no brainer decision - we hate getting the "sales pitch" this was a completely different feeling - my brother and I took 2 seconds to look at each other and say this is the place! We didn't use the chapel or reception facilities - their garden chapel is a nice option, with plenty of parking - and Anaheim Brewery next door could be a plus! The services we used went perfect - casket was as ordered and perfect in every way. Transportation was on time and the attendants did an outstanding job. Professional and willing to do whatever was needed to make things go smoothly - I felt they were truly there to help. Communication and paperwork are always issues - everything went great. My wife and I met with Becky regarding a question we had - she called the cemetery and spoke to several people to get us the answers - in fact, there was a problem at the cemetery (somewhat my fault). Becky went out of her way to take care of the problem and make everything work just right. She would have been completely justified to charge us for the extra day of services and extra trips they needed to make - but no charge, no problem at all. Helping us with the problem was her motivation! Not surprising when you see the accolades on the wall about how Becky and her business has given back to the local community. Our whole family holds Becky and Hilgenfeld in high regard, we consider ourselves lucky to have found her at time when we really needed her. I give them my highest recommendation and my thanks. read more

If I could give 100 stars I would and each would be well deserved. When my dad passed away, the last thing my sisters and I wanted to do was stress about funeral planning. When our mom passed on January 4th, we reached out to the Hilgenfeld team to assist with her Memorial Service. The family did a conference call with Brett Rocha and he clearly and professionally answered each and every question that came his way from the group. We then met in the Hilgenfeld office to finalize the service and his compassion and sincerity for our family were truly evident. On the day of the Memorial Service, the Hilgenfeld team had the chapel set just as we had discussed. Our last minute musical choices were seamlessly coordinated, along with the video setup for our slide show. At the conclusion of the service, we received numerous compliments regarding the warm setting and heartfelt tribute. Losing a parent is extremely difficult to plan for, but I'm glad there were professionals like Brett and staff to guide us through the process. Our sincerest thank you for a job well done. read more
