We came across this gem after having lunch in the area and wanting something to sip on. At first we thought we were in the wrong location since we noticed the nursery but to our happy surprise we realized that Highwire is actually a trailer in the nursery. In the nursery this coffee shop has a few benches to sit on but you should definitely take the time to explore the plants. In terms of sizes they have S, M, and L for the hot and I believe Iced only comes in on size which is the medium. We got the Chai where you can choose between masala chai from black tea and the green tea version. I enjoyed the chai from this place but it was on the spicier side. Once I got to the bottom of my drink it felt that some of the spices were getting stuck in the back of my throat. I really enjoyed it though so I'll probably be getting it again but with less spice. The baristas here are super chill and great to chat with while you wait for your drinks. read more

I came here to grab a hot beverage (coffee for her, a chai for me) with a friend so we could have a little one on one time before going out with a group later to celebrate her pending nuptials. Upon arrival, we made our way through the garden of Flowerland and up to the converted trailer. Orders are placed on the right, and pickups are on the left. We then meandered back through the greenery to choose from a number of eclectic seating options and parked our butts and took it all in. Definitely a place to linger. My chai had just the right amount of spiciness and thankfully was not sweet. The muffins were also spot on and not overly dry like many gluten free options can be. I'm delighted that there is a Local 123 outpost on Solano. The fact that it is in the sleepy garden of Flowerland is even better. This area of The Ave definitely needed some good coffee. How clever those Highwire guys were in taking advantage of the retro-hip vibe of the popular Flowerland Nursery to park a mini-Airstream on the grounds to serve their particular brand of caffeine. I've enjoyed their coffee at the Ferry Building as well as their stand in Market Hall in Rockridge. You can tell the three co-owners know their beans from their nearly sixty years of cumulative experience in coffee with a lot of their tenure spent at Peet's. They don't have a hugely robust menu, but it works. I'm usually quite satisfied with their Coffee of the Day and a $3 cup suits me just fine, but a $4.50 Latte can be a genuine treat (photo: http://bit.ly/2FvXJdo). Nice set up, but the white boy with blue eyes found it imperative to tell me they were closing as I was just about to make a order. I was already disappointed that they only had one coffee bean available so just had some questions. The last one that got him going was what is a "Gibraltar". That is when he said we close after his other coworker had already let me know this in his presence. I told him he was a dick and walked off. A medium roast coffee with a lot of "roast" but still no traces of dark roast or objectionable finish. One of the nicest mediums I've had anywhere. I definitely plan on getting wired here again. This is a bay area coffee roasting company that started in 2011. This place is a small trailer/stand located inside the cutest nursery. It felt like a cute and private sanctuary. There's outdoor seating and you can "dine-in" or have your coffee to-go. I had a latte and thought it was delicious and well balanced. I came to this spot when I had an appointment to meet-up with a dog-friend. They even gave my dog friend a milk bone. The nursery is a lovely location to enjoy a nice cup. This Highwire Coffee is no average cafe... it sits in the garden of Flowerland, so you get happy flowery vibes + strong coffee in one shot. Or chai, in my case! The chai, by the way, is excellent. They have 2 types: spicy/peppery/ginger concoction, and a green-tea based chai that's more mild. The spicy one works great with a shot of espresso... the chai essence doesn't get lost. There are a few seats & tables tucked into the foilage, and the locals like to linger (who wouldn't?). You order at the trailer window, where the very helpful and chipper baristas take your order and whip up each drink one at a time. Everyone is 100% right about the spot being a gem except for one tiny thing: Their coffee is really not very good. And by not very good I mean just not good. Pastry was tasty and walking around the nursery was great but other than that I wasn't impressed. Next time, I think I'll skip the coffee and go just for the plants. read more
