Off the beaten path we found Highway 63 Diner. Old school home cooking. Homemade salad dressings, delicious homemade rolls, variety of menu choices and sides. Our food was piping hot when came out. Very delicious. On the 15 th of the month, they donate 10% of the proceeds to a charity. It was American Cancer Society today. Christian music played in the background. Service was excellent. Our Salt and Pepper Shaker club enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the diner! We had 22 people. You were prepared. You had an extensive menu and everyone found something that they wanted. Here is a example of a good small steakhouse. Excellent choice of food prepared with pride. The staff is friendly and attentive. I can't recommend any one item because the all seem so good. Although there is no wasted space you still don't seem to be sitting on top of each other. We try to stop here whenever we pass through waterloo. read more

Always been a good spot to eat in the Cedar Valley. Can be busy with a wait sometimes. Staff is friendly and the food is good most times. Very small parking lot and the hotel live ins tend to creep around the side parking lot like a backyard. Keep your kids close if you park over there. read more

This is about a 3.25-3.5 star review. The staff was very nice and checked in regularly. Its an interesting combination of Perkins-style entrees with a bar wedged in. They only have three taps however. On a hot day though, the Blue Moon surely hit the spot. I will say I was disappoined they didn't have breakfast--I incorrectly assumed that they would by the name of the establishment. Nothing was terrible, but nothing was outstanding either. They seem to be very proud of their house salad with homemade dressings. Uniquely, they bring out a caddy of all four of their dressings, allowing you to try them all. The dressings were all very good--the French might have been the best I've have. Zippy, slightly tart, and a little black pepper. The salad is very pedestrian and I think that's being generous. Shredded lettuce like you'd find on a taco with a few matchstick carrots and an equally small amount of red cabbage shreds mixed in. No croutons or anything else to add texture. The American fries were cooked to perfection, but are closer to what I've considered home fries or breakfast cubes. I've always thought American fries as thinly sliced potatoes. No complaints though with the flavor. The chopped steak could have used some seasoning or something, it was pretty much ground sirloin with a flavorless au jus. I accidently dumped half a bottle of Worsteschire sauce on it; I didn't realize the bottle didn't have one of those filters on it. As I said in my second paragraph, nothing was offensive, but nothing stood out either. For the price point, I feel like you can do better elsewhere. read more

Traveling and stopped in for lunch. Service was good and food was excellent. I had a salad with grilled pork. Wife had a house salad and soup. Grandson had a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. I ordered a 2-piece chicken dinner this evening and the thigh looked like it came from a capon. It was so small that I barely got two bites of meat. My husband had a hot turkey sandwich with potatoes and gravy. There was very little turkey in the sandwich. The prices have gone up and the quantity and quality have gone down. We were there yesterday for a party. To start they booked two parties in the same room for the same time. It was crowded and hot. The waitress for our party clearly didn't want to deal with us. She was apparently overwhelmed. When she would bring the drinks instead asking who the drink was for she would just drop it off (without making eye contact) anywhere and then leave as fast as she could. We didn't order a ton of different things, a few pizzas, chicken, onion rings and salad. We had to ask for more plates when it was obvious that the six plates she brought wouldn't be enough for the entire group. The food definitely was lacking. Pizza was terrible, the onion rings were burnt! I have heard good things about this place but yesterday they dropped the ball. Because the waitress didn't want to bring drinks the lady who this party was honoring became a waitress. She got drinks faster and better. A guest did go to the bar to get his own drink and was told by the bartender that if we would should let the waitress get the drinks and not "bombard" her. All in all this was the worst service and food I have ever had. Maybe next time they shouldn't schedule two parties at the same time if they can't handle it. I'm a fan! Highway 63 has a lot of home made comfort food. They make their own dressings which are great. The side salad got my 6 year old to start eating salads! The cheese curds are yummy. Portions are generous. My dad got the Patty melt and says it's one of the best he's had in 50 years! Plus the fries are good too. read more

I can't believe this isn't a solid 5-star on Yelp! Homemade goodness and a screaming value. We went on a Tuesday night and decided to try all the specials: $2 beer, $2 off a chicken dinner, and $2 chocolate cake. My husband also ordered a separate drink and cheese curds. The chicken dinner was soooo good. Large salad with homemade dressings, accompanied by a homemade roll. We asked our waitress (Karla! You're awesome) which side to order and she recommended the bean casserole. It was fabulous. The table next to us ordered sandwiches and they looked incredible too. This place rocks! read more

Service was very professional and attentive, even though the place was slammed when we were there, due to a tour bus full of people showing up just as we were seated. The food was another story. The salad was just lettuce with a very few shreds of purple cabbage in it, though the garlic dressing was quite good. The big disappointment was my chicken pot pie - the crust was bread-like, not a flaky sort of crust like you want in a pot pie, and the filling was undersalted and bland, with very little chicken flavor (or chicken, for that matter), and too many pieces of potato. It was okay, I got through it, but I would not order that dish again. The great service and the full-house attendance tell me that I might have better luck with other dishes, and I will try again sometime. read more

Ok. Family of 11 show up for dinner for a big milestone celebration. We weren't expecting amazing food from the reviews - but we were expecting edible food. The cheeseburger tasted like cardboard. The chicken strips were too dry to eat. The chefs salad took 30 minutes and had wet lettuce. They were out of everything. THE WORST PART .... One of us asked management to take care of the couple celebrating with a free dessert given our experience AND THEY SAID NO. None of us could believe it. We came for my grandparents 50th anniversary, we also came for there prime rib that they are supposed to have on Friday not only did they not have prime rib or ribeye the food was abysmal(that we had to wait an hour for) the salad was almost liquid and my tenders so dry. The manager was not professional or friendly. My boneless pork chop was not cooked all the way through and it was tough. The salad was nothing more than a bowl of lettuce. The baked roll was good. I asked to change the pork chop for a pork tenderloin sandwich and she said, I can order the sandwich, but would need to pay for both. I only took two bits of the boneless pork, It was clear to see. Medium sized place that was packed full of local people. The staff was super friendly and attentive. I ordered the broasted chicken with mashed and corn casserole. Just like grandma would fix. So good! Three of us got broasted chicken, one got chicken strips, one had baked cod, and the other had breakfast pizza. We got the Hansen's cheese curds to share. Everyone loved their food! Probably not the breakfast pizza so much, but that one was the most picky eater of the 6. The wheat rolls are AMAZING. We got a large bowl of tossed salad for the table. You get a choice of 4 dressings, all brought to the table so that you can put it on yourself. (Reminds me of how it was when I was a kid and they brought the dressing in that silver thing and you dipped out of it.) The service was excellent and there was a steady stream of people in and out on a Tuesday night around 7. We all agreed that we would go back and either get the chicken again or try something new. Where has this been all my life? I always knew it existed just never heard much about it. One of my coworkers urged me to try it and I wasn't disappointed! We arrived at 5pm on Saturday evening. The place was already filling up. By the time we left it was packed and people were waiting. We were greeted immediately upon entering. And our service remained genuine and friendly our entire visit. I ordered the Frenchy which is basically a breaded and fried grilled cheese sandwich cut into 4 pieces. It was good. Gooey and yummy. It came with fried or salad. My husband ordered a two piece breasted chicken meal. It came with choice of side, roll and salad. He said it was piping hot and excellent. My son ordered the chicken tender kids meal. You can tell they house bread their own tenders. Very large kids portion. We also ordered the fried potato slices with cheese sauce for an appetizer. The half portion was plenty for 2 to 3 persons. They were good too. My husband isn't a fan of salads so I ate his side salad. Their house made dressings are wonderful. They have a thinly sliced lettuce which allows the dressing to get maximum coverage. Yum. We will be back. Lots more items on the menu I want to try. read more

Wow has this place taken a wrong turn after its sale. Where to begin the last 3 times we have been there is been progressively worse. Service is awful almost rude. Food has been cold, not cooked or wrong. And sllloooowwww We tried take out they told us 30mins after 30mins we went to pick up only to find out they hadn't submitted the ticket then had to wait an additional 30mins.... there was zero apology Oh and most of the dinners had the wrong sides. We had a 95th and 75th Bday party here combined with a total of 20 people. We had Karri as our waitress and she handled our entire party with a warm friendly attitude and got every order perfect. We were so impressed. All the staff were kind and friendly not to mention food was fantastic and reasonably priced for the portion sizes. Due to COVID, this was the first time in a year that our family had been out to eat. We chose the diner for the variety on the menu. Our orders were prime rib, sirloin, jumbo scallops, and breaded chicken sandwich, with an order of cheese curds for an appetizer. They were the best cheese balls we've ever had. The main entrees were equally great, and the portions were big. Our server kept our drinks full, which is an important thing for us. Mmmmm I've been there before and had OK meals but this time I ordered the Cheese Frenchie sandwich and was super disappointed. It looked nothing like the picture. It used plain white bread with some sort of coating fried onto it. Yuk. Was greasy. The other two people I was with got better meals. When I am near Waterloo this is my FAVORITE spot! Their food is all so delicious and homemade! They have their own salad dressings that they make from scratch and are available for purchase. They also have homemade buns with their meals that hit the spot! This diner has a very homey feel and always has amazing specials! Their sides are amazing as well. I have ordered the fried fish, prime rib, and chicken fried steak and each dish was perfectly made! They have the best staff also and are always so nice and welcoming. We use to like this place a lot but something is happening with them and it's not in a good way. I called to place an order for take out and was placed on hold for 5 1/2 minutes before hanging up and calling back. Second time was better, I was only on hold for 4 minutes before placing an order. I ordered a hot beef sandwich and thought about asking for the gravy on the side so it wouldn't be a soggy mess before I got home but thought this would be common sense. Nope! Most of the time I try to eat only organic food, but going on a road trip across Iowa, I have to compromise on that aspect if I am going to eat out, unfortunately. As conventional restaurants go, the food quality at this place was pretty good. The salad dressings are homemade and quite good, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the 1970's style shredded lettuce salad (all you can eat, and I ate quite a lot of it). The broasted chicken and mashed potatoes were not too bad too. The building and the service both seemed fine. I will make a point of stopping back if I drive through here again. read more
