We were both novices (me especially starting from zero), but told her were interested in contemporary dance techniques, lifts, dips--the works, set to our chosen song. We met with her for private couple's lessons basically weekly, and 2-3 times weekly towards the end for the entire length of our engagement, and our crazy working schedules were amazingly accommodated. No matter how busy our week was, we always made it because our dance lesson was such a perfect way to wind down, get the blood flowing, and have fun doing something together. Throughout, Krissy was a brilliant and gifted dancer, a masterful, patient, and playful teacher, an inspirational coach, a creative and genius choreographer, and a hilarious and uplifting companion. Over our 18 months of lessons, we both gained a strong foundation of technique as well as a meticulously choreographed custom dance that we felt confident performing for our wedding guests. She helped us get to know our style and made us feel comfortable to try new things. We also gained a valuable friendship! We are so endlessly grateful for the tireless work Krissy put in to take us from beginners with borderline unrealistic ambitions, to full-fledged dancers making everyone's jaw drop on our wedding day. I understand why people like MPT upon first attending. You can meet new people, learn something…read morenew, and practice together. That's how I started. But there is a lot under the surface that new attendees don't realize. Everyone single woman in the Yelp photo above (that was the pro-team a few years back) has left the company because of Carlos's (and other leadership) behavior as well as the toxic culture of the studio. I can name so many women who have complained about him to me (I won't...because they don't feel safe to out themselves). But I will tell you a bit of what women are saying (mind you, these are women who have been in the studio for several years). -If he finds a woman attractive, he'll entice you to book a private session. Those sessions are often creepy as heck (unless you bring a boyfriend or husband). -If you don't reciprocate his advances, he'll potentially stalk or harass you. Don't believe me? There are SO many women who have saved screenshots of abusive conversations with him. He has also had at least one restraining order/No contact order against him. I'll bet there are more. -He'll encourage you to be on his performance teams (as I was for 3 years), but if you don't look a certain way, he won't let you advance. I saw so many young, thin women (who had been with the company only a short time) be advanced to higher levels even though they definitely had not put in the time and training that other women (perhaps not as young and thin) had done. All that said...he's going to try to make you think that all these women speaking out against him are crazy or delusional...or that we're competitors trying to take his business. We're not. Speaking for myself, I brought people into the company while I was there...and I feel bad for that. This is me now trying to undo a little of the harm that I've done. ***No, my real name isn't Alexandra. Do you think any of us feel safe stating who we really are?***

Sign up is easy, and can be done through their website. When you go, wear comfortable clothes, and bring extra shoes so that you don't bring in mud and dirt onto the nice dancing floor. The best part - their bread and butter jams! They are dance parties every thursday night that are open to the public. If you take their Thursday night dance class, you get into the bread and butter jam for free :) Prov Swings also hosts special dance weekends where national dance instructors come in to teach all different levels of dance instruction. The weekend also usually has a fun public dance that Saturday night. The lessons are for people of all ages - and I've seen teenagers through people in their 70's! One of the gems in our state - for sure!

Providence Swing will get you up and dancing, no matter your background, experience or, in my case, complete ineptitude. My wife and I wanted to take dance lessons after we became empty-nesters. We were looking for something fun that we could do together. My wife vetoed skeet shooting because there was no physical exercise involved. And so we started looking for dance lessons. We had never done any kind of dancing before -- ever. The scene in Hitch where Will Smith tries to teach Kevin James how to dance was written just for me. We took a few lessons at various places, all of which tried to sell you the next, more expensive lesson. We were about to quit and choose another hobby to pursue when we found Providence Swings. Providence Swings is a truly unique organization. It is not a company trying to sell you dance lessons. It is an amazing community of people who have a passion for swing dancing and want to share that passion with others. Providence Swings has a warm, inviting atmosphere. People really want to help you learn how to dance. And there are people of all ages there, young and old, college kids, newlyweds, empty-nesters and retirees. Lessons are relatively inexpensive and really only a part of what Providence Swings has to offer. Instead of continually asking if you'd like a more expensive lesson, you'll get questions about whether or not you're going to the next social dance. Providence Swings hosts a dance every Thursday night, free for anyone signed up for lessons that month. Everyone is welcome and it is a great time to practice, hang out with friends and have some fun. When you first show up, you may be in awe and somewhat intimidated by how good some of the dancers are. Don't be. They are all friendly and eager to teach you. They are welcoming and, my wife and I can personally attest, very, very patient and excellent teachers. Best of all, if you stick with it, soon you'll be dancing like a pro and you will have made many friends along the way. Where once I stood on the sidelines or -- when absolutely forced to -- did my version of the "washing machine" or "lawnmower", my wife and I now search out places to dance and actually get compliments on our dancing. We can now Swing, Lindy Hop, Charleston and Balboa. (Who knew there were dances where you actually move your feet?) We are still learning, but that is part of the fun. We love Providence Swing and can't recommend it enough.

Not only do that have a competitive dance team and classes for experienced dancers, they welcome people of all ages and levels to come out and have fun. They are there to help you learn and can make accommodations as needed. Convenient access from the highway too!!!
