Ill go 5 because they never fail me. I order custom wood here all the time for my projects. They mill and edge wood on site as well. They have an awesome selection of wood. only recommendation would be get someone to answer the phone who encourages business, the lady who answers the phone makes it seem like taking orders or customer work is a hassle. The "big deal" had a big attitude today. I have spent thousands of dollars in this store. I try and spend my money in local stores. I needed a sheet of plywood for some shelving, First she made me wait, while there were other employees that could help. But she stopped them from helping me. All the while she fiddled around with another customer. When I was granted an audience with her highness I asked for a sheet of the cheapest plywood, she huffed with anger and irritation. I have been buying wood form HDH for over 20 years and always great quality and service. My opinion- Their lumber is not cheap but if you want quality wood for a quality woodworking project, HDH is the place for you. If you want junk lumber, go to the big box stores. read more

So I dropped by to purchase some hardwood for another project. In the past there was a very nice gentleman who took care of me but today it was a woman. I'm guessing this was "her highness" as another reviewer described her. After digging through the pile of cherry to find a board without a crack or excessive damage, I pulled 2 out and did my best to restack the pile the way I found it. I put the boards on the radial arm saw table and told her I was finished. She says, "I ask that you re-stack the pile". I replied, "already done". She then proceeds to walk over to the pile and spend 5 minutes flipping and pulling and restacking...way more than I even went through to make a point. I am kicking myself for not just getting in my truck and driving off, with the boards left on the saw. Lady, you may be the only hardwood store in the area but believe me, I will NEVER buy from you people again. How rude can you be? read more

Looking for good source for lumber locally? Here it is, it is truly a wooded wonderland. They recently came under new ownership a little while ago after the loss of the previous owner. They still price everything based on prices off the truck when delivered. They do discount types here and there. It you cannot mill your own lumber they can but it does cost. Also check out their small storage of plywood, much better quality and variety then you will find any where else in town. http://www.highdeserthardwood.com/ They also have a pdf of what they keep in stock on their site. I had to bribe a friend recently to prove that there is a better source than Woodcraft...lol. After helping out a friend with a couple woodworking projects, I decided to build my own desk for my first. High Desert Hardwood has a really nice entry lined with sample blocks of many (if not all) the woods they carry. This helps greatly with getting an idea of what a finished product will look like, and also provides a useful visual tool when talking to the staff about what you're thinking. They seemed extremely knowledgeable about what types of wood they recommend for certain projects, as well as letting me know which would be poor choices due to various characteristics of certain woods. Their advice was dead on, the prices are Very attractive, and I could not be happier with the desk I ended up with, as it will no doubt outlast me. I enjoy each trip I make out to this place, as it makes me feel like a kid in a candy store, especially when shown some of the exotics they have in stock. I will Absolutely be heading back in when I feel ambitious enough to start a rocking chair. read more
