You can do some thinking in this bookstore. In other words: It's a good used bookstore! Book Nook is one of the older bookstores in Cadillac. They have lots of books, including rare and out-of-print titles. It's not fancy in the least bit, and in fact it's a little overwhelming to visit because there's just so much everywhere all at once. But if you're into organized chaos, you will have fun exploring Book Nook because there is something to see all around the store. My children headed straight for the kids' section. There were lots of books here that sent me straight to the late 1980s and early 1990s when I was a young reader, like the McGurk detective series and Lois Lowry joints. My kids each found a book to take home for pocket change. That's the great thing about used book stores: You can walk away with a treasure for a couple of bucks. Book Nook also has lots of old magazines, those trash paperback romance novels you read on vacation, albums and vinyl records, 25-cent gum-ball machines and more. It's the real old-school deal, and you need to visit this place when you're in Cadillac.

The Value of Family-Owned Bookstores…read more In the age of mega-bookstores, it is becoming a greater challenge to find a family-owned bookstore where you find highly committed people focused on creating great experiences for book-loving customers. My wife and I are always seeking out those family-owned bookstores when we travel across the Midwest. When we walk into any of these kinds of bookstores, we are often immediately introduced to an owner, and eager employees always wanting show a high level of passion for serving the needs of people like my wife and myself. I am often pleased with each bookstore visit and amazed at how successful they are in their businesses, always showing their best efforts to help patrons find great titles. There is something special about a family-owned bookstore. The personal connection, passion for books, and genuine desire to help customers create an experience that is difficult to find in today's world of mega-retailers. Yet there is one one bookstore that has stood far above all the other great bookstores. This great experience begins on the west end of Lake Street in Petoskey. It starts when you walk into and start examining the shelves of McLean & Eakin Booksellers owned by Matt and Jessilynn. You are amazed at the unique titles and their stories that seem to consistently appear on every shelf. Experiencing McLean & Eakin Booksellers is a reader's delight. I have been fortunate to meet Matt and as you listen or watch him you can see an enthusiastic gentleman who takes a personal interest in every person he chats with....and will even go out of his way to help someone. Talk to anyone who works at McLean & Eakin Booksellers and you will see the same unselfish passion and interest in helping someone. So are you an owner operator bookstore patron and visiting Petoskey, be sure your footsteps take you to McLean & Eakin Booksellers. Then stop at Roast n Toast and grab a bite.... your starting points for a great Petoskey day.

There are also lots of popular children's books available (lots of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which is super important), as well as a section of children's books by local Michigan writers and books about the state of Michigan. There's a little cafe here, too. It's not much, but you can get coffee, tea, hot chocolate, chips and other snacks, and some baked goods. There are a few tables in the cafe area where you can sit and enjoy your food and beverages. I was impressed by the number of cute Michigan / Cadillac gifts that were around the store. Things like Cadillac mugs, tote bags, t-shirts, cards and other things. If you're looking for a souvenir or local gift, this is a place to find that.
