We trusted them with our dog, only to be forced into untrained, terrifying roles: sedating him ourselves and pulling his breathing tube as he woke--tasks trained staff should handle. Zero prior communication about any of this. Staff whispered very negative comments, hid behind doors, refused to speak to him--creating a hostile, fear-filled environment. If your dog is large, anxious, or simply needs respect and preparation, look elsewhere. read more

We brought our dog to Hickory Vet Hospital when our dog developed diarrhea after an initial bout of vomiting. Dr. Hancock, who we already knew from when she worked at another vet clinic, took great care of her. And when the diarrhea persisted, we brought her back to see Dr. Acevedo-Riveira this time, who prescribed an antibiotic. Both the vets and support staff are terrific. I absolutely love Hickory Veterinary Hospital. I have been taking my fur baby there for years. The staff are very professional and accommodating. I have never had a problem getting in, and when my fur baby was having an urgent issue, I called right when they opened and they got me a same day appointment (one hour later). I've been coming here for a couple years now and at first I really liked them. The vets I love. They both seem to really care about animals and are very friendly when talking to me. However, I have never cared for the front desk employees. There's 1 or 2 in particular that are very friendly and welcome you as you come in. The rest seem to have no personality and do not welcome you as you come in. This morning the lady at the front desk was checking out another customer. I waited for about 4 minutes a without a single "I'll be right with you, or good morning." When it was my turn I said "good morning" and all she said was " I'll be right with you." After another 2 minutes she says " who are you here with?" I proceeded to wait another 5 minutes to have my cat called in the exam room. It was 8:28am. My appointment was 8am. I love the vets here. They're great. The vet assistants are friendly and knowledgeable. It's the ladies out front at the desk who are short, not very friendly, and a bit rude. Because of this, I cannot give 5 stars. The employees who deal with customers are the first things to make an impression. Also, there's no reason why I should still be waiting to see the Dr at 8:48am when my appt is 8 am. ‍ read more

So I read on my Next door app that a couple of people highly recommended this vets office. I am pretty sure now after the visit that the two recommendations were from the staff them selves. In my opinion, this place is not going to make the experience personalized to you and your pets needs but rather a heavy presence of upselling their products and services. I'll get straight to the point. My dog is 12 yrs old. About a week ago a vet saw him for his gland infection, and the found he has a heart murmur. I was booked an appt for the following. Friday but I was not willing to wait so I jumped the gun to go get him tested for heartworms and Hickory fit him right in due to a cancellation. I arrived and neither of the two ladies at the desk even greeted or said hello or we will be right with you, nada. When I walked up closer and introduced myself, they had me set my dog on the scale and there was some paperwork and in we went. I explained the murmur mentioned and wanted a test for the heartworms, expressed concern for his cough at night and told of his history. I explained that I wanted to get him on some meds for his murmur that I read about that is said to help with heart murmurs. They took Puddin in the back to do the blood work for heart worms? Weird. They came back and assistant started all her product sphiels. I got the one for heartworm prevention. The vet comes in and discusses an estimate for a dog cardiologist and tests and exrays etc. I must look really dumb. I love my dog to the moon and back. There's nothing I would not do to help him. But, truth is he is older. This is life and it sucks. But there's no way I'm going to pay over a thousand bucks to what? Be told my dogs old has a heart murmur and maybe or maybe not get the meds? Wow! Vet even put something in there about the difference in a day and my dog being gone! Talk about adding insult to injury! So if y'all have lots of money you would like to give away for nothing, head on to this place! They'll gladly take advance of you in a time where it is not appreciated at all. read more

Dr Redding has been like a savior in my quest to understand what to do about my aging mini poodle. I'm very pleased with the accommodating staff and the amount of time everyone allowed, so I could understand what my pup needed. This is truly the only veterinary clinic where my dog didn't shake violently the entire time during the visit. The atmosphere was so stress free for my pet. I felt that all pet owners present during our appointment were just as pleased. This is truly the best experience for us. I have been a client here now for 4 years. I have lived in Hampton, Norfolk, and Suffolk in those four years and still choose to drive all the way to Chesapeake to have my pets cared for at this clinic. Both of the doctors are exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable, not to mention personable and truly care about their patients. I love that they are willing to take whatever time is needed to make sure I understand what is going on with my pets and not rush me out of the room. Dr Redding is a huge bonus to me as I also have "exotic" pets and he see's almost any animal you can think of! In addition to my cats and dogs, he has seen my rats, and my snake and I have seen animal from ferrets to birds to Komodo dragons in there! His range of expertise is amazing! The staff is caring and patient and makes the visit worth it whether it's for an annual or for the sad time when an animal is ready to go to the Rainbow Bridge. Nine years ago we moved to Chesapeake and needed to find a vet to care for our 2 Saint Bernard dogs. We came to Hickory Veterinary Hospital and were very happy with our choice. The vet and the staff were exceptional and took great care of our pets. As time progressed, the care was still great. However the personable atmosphere was starting to change. We figured it could be someone having a bad day or not feeling well or being overwhelmed with too many pet needs and not enough time to accomplish these demands. Our female dog almost made it to 10 years but the old age took away her ability to walk. We had her put down and again all was done with care. Our male dog made it to age 12 but like his sister old age issues prevailed. He was in great pain and a car ride was not an option. We had him put down by another vet who was able to come to our home. In Dec 2021, we found a breeder and were able to adopt a wonderful Saint Bernard Puppy in Feb 2022. She is highly intelligent. loving but at times was stubborn. I brought her in and we began the process of getting shots, wellness exam and back for rabies shot when it was due. Unfortunately something had changed. She was given good care but when I asked for advice--I felt offended. The first and second time, I was told she is a puppy and to allocate more time for her. The third time I was told in a gruff manner to TRAIN her. Unknown to all there, I had already hired a reputable trainer and we used her for 11 weeks at $1000.00. We learned key areas to work on and our puppy was also learning good behavior. During the 6th week the professional trainer gave us some choices to stop bad behavior. She advised us to get a special collar that has a tone, a vibration and a shock to curb problems and distractions. Her jumping on us stopped and we now use the tone choice as needed. Yesterday was the final straw regarding using this Vet hospital. We brought her in to have the 8 month old heart worm test and have her nails trimmed. She behaved well as we waited her turn. The staff person came to get her and she was reluctant to go with her. She was taken to the back as we waited for the process to be complete. When it was finished, the same staff person brought her back. In an angry voice, she bellowed GET HER TRAINED, It took 4 of us to hold her down to draw blood. And there will be NO Nail trimming today. Additionally you will be charged and additional fee because we need extra people to help. I said that's OK but if this was done in a room with one of us-- with == her she might not have been scared. I said I was sorry for her behavior. We are now looking for a different Vet hospital and will NO longer be using Hickory Vet Hospital for our dog and two cats. I gave them a 3 in the review because we started out great in the beginning. Was a customer for years. Brought a new dog. Was prescribed heart worm. After 6 months was told they would not renew unless another test was done. I said that I just had him tested 6 months ago and they said would not renew prescription they sent to pharmacy unless a new test was done that it is their recommendation and that is their policy. After going round and round I said I would find a new vet that I have never heard having to get tested every 6 months for heart worm. I felt this was a way to just get more money. I was originally told that I would be given a 12 month prescription and they said no they would not authorize another 6months. So I went to another vet! Well after spending money and going to another vet and getting my prescription the pharmacy automatically sent me my prescription because Hickory staff did not bother to look in their records that in fact they did authorize a 12 month and he indeed did not have to come back for a heart worm check. They admitted it was their staffs fault for not reading the chart and looking at the last visit and the prescription they wrote to the pharmacy. I contacted Hickory Vet and they refused to take responsibility and refund my money of $189.00. All they would say is sorry, we messed up but you should have checked your emails when the pharmacy said they were going to mail it to you. (which I did not receive) Luckily this was nothing serious because obviously, it is all about the money. Their staff was more concerned with getting a extra heart worm check then looking at my dogs records and seeing that THEY already approved the prescription for 12 months like I had told them numerous times. But they kept insisting they would deny it when it came through. Lost a long time customer! read more

I was very disappointed with my visit today. This was my 1st time meeting Dr. Redding. He was not personable at all. My older pup has been having hip issues. Dr. Redding examined my dog and then diagnosed him as having a heart murmur. I was surprised at the expense of a cardiac work-up. One specialist exam is $487 and another $515 for the same visit. When I expressed shock over the cost they shrugged their shoulders and basically said oh well. The receptionist at check-out was rude and not personable at all either. It was a terrible experience and I am not going back. I was already stressed and concerned about my dog - their rude behavior was not helpful and only added to the stress. read more

My dog was not acting well on January 7. His regular vet said to give benadryl because it could be just some allergies with the coughing. Also said they couldn't see him for another week because they are booked til then. Finally they said to take him to an emergency room if things get worse. Well overnight on the 7th to the morning of the 8th he cough and what we thought was throwing up the whole night. We thought about taking him to the emergency room but we saw that Hickory veterinary hospital was open and a lot closer. We called and told them of what is going on and the person over the phone said they were booked but then asked "how soon can you get your baby here?" They took the time to open up their schedule to get us right in as soon as we got there. they did blood work and X-rays. Come to find out that he had a blockage where the esophagus meets the stomach. Unfortunately they had no scope to perform an endoscopy. They gave us some places to try and helped us the whole way through it. The assistants to Dr Redding really were on their game too. We were given the runaround from one of the emergency rooms called "Blue xxxxx" ( won't say their full name) , as they were not willing to give an endoscopy just because Hickory said so. Even though there was proof. The assistants argued with Blue and telling them this is an emergency. Long story short, we found a great emergency room service in Williamsburg. My dog suffered from megasphogus which is something that is serious if not treated correctly. Hickory veterinary hospital helped save my dogs life. We are forever grateful for them and have switched to them as our primary vet. Thank you Dr Redding and all the staff!! Highly recommend you! read more

Very disappointed with my experience at Hickory. I have boarded my cat many times at different vets in multiples cities where I used to live. There has NEVER been an issue with boarding my cat, until I brought her to Hickory. We dropped our cat off for boarding in the morning and immediately hit the road for our road trip. 2 hours into the trip we get a call from Hickory saying they can't get my cat out of her crate and that we need to turn around and come get her. We had to turn all the way around and go pick her up. We were lucky to find a different boarding facility to take her the same day who had ZERO problems handling our cat. They were able to have her safe and happy in a cat condo in minutes. For a vet that claims to handle exotic animals, Hickory apparently can't handle a ten pound domestic cat. Don't waste your time boarding here-- you may get a call demanding you return to pick up your animal because they don't know how to do their job. What would they have done had I been too far away to come back and get her? Clearly inexperienced in animal handling and unreliable boarding. read more

Hickory Veterinary Hospital got me in quick, the service is happy and warm, and they are very gentle and caring when they handle my dog. My dog may not have taken this move well, but they certainly helped him to feel much better. By law, a service should be carried out with reasonable care and skill. This doctor has neither of those! He never made eye contact with me and didn't explain things the way I could understand. He prescribed a bunch of herbs that didn't even work. I took my cat to a different Vet and know she is much better! My cat was misdiagnosed by Dr. Redding! Finding a good vet should make annual/sick appointments a breeze and helps to minimize the stress and frustration if your pet is sick or injured.....but not at here. read more

I have been bringing my pets to Hickory Veterinary hospital for 13 years. I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Jeff Klemm and how he has treated our canine and feline family members. Unfortunately, Dr. Klemm has sold his practice, but fortunately still works a few days a week. I recently took my 7 year old lab into Dr. Klemm due to my dog loosing appetite and becoming lethargic. A diagnosis was made and we were told to observe our dog. After a few days, the dog was not getting better and I had to return to the clinic and saw Dr. Redding (new owner). I told him she was acting very similar to an UTI infection she had last year. After a series of tests it was confirmed "UTI." Was charged $576.61 and was out the door with medication. After I arrived home I looked up medication and the average RETAIL price was $2.00 per pill. I was charged $6.75 per pill by the clinic and when I talked to Dr. Redding he had no idea about his pricing and told me he would pass to office manager,the officer manager basically told me that next time I should get a written prescription and fill elsewhere. I understand making a profit, but this is gouging. A 300% mark-up is hard to swallow, but I learned a valuable lesson. Still on fence about supporting the new owner. read more

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the new owner and veterinarian, Dr. Jerry Redding, at Hickory Veterinary Hospital. He and his staff were attentive and very pleasant, immediately making me feel welcomed and comfortable with my dog's care. My Old English 1 1/2 year old puppy has had urinary incontinence issues since birth and has intermittently taken Proin to solve this issue. When I expressed my concern to Dr. Redding about any possible side effects with this long-term use, he addressed my worries, unlike my former vet, who just told me it would be fine. He prescribed two different natural supplements of the natural form of Proin, which I am hopeful will eventually eliminate the need for my dog to be on the drug form. Dr. Redding is certified in eastern medicine and food therapy which offer other alternatives to the usual medications and treatments. Also, having gone through a very bad experience trying to find a vet that would treat my cockatiel, I am very excited to hear that Dr. Redding treats exotics including birds. I would also like to add the facility was spotless and a pleasant atmosphere as well. It's easy to get appointments and their fees are very reasonable. Most importantly though, they are truly good people with good hearts and positive energy. You can tell they are in business because they love animals. I brought my 4 mo. rescue- kitten with an eye infection to Hickory Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Redding secured a same evening appointment for me to an eye-specialist. Thanks to the quick response in care and medicine, her eyes are better than the specialist hoped they could be.
