Great place to take your dog. The clientele seems to be pretty loyal as it's hard to get an appointment booked and is closed Saturday-Monday. That's the only reason I have given it 4 stars. However, they did a great job with our Maltipoo. It's easy to miss this business as it's ticked away in an off corner of the shopping center. But it is across from the ABC store. Parking is good and it's easy to find a spot close to store. Drop off is 7:30am, and we were able to pick up our dog at 1200. read more

I have a strong minded, Giant Schnauzer. He is a rescue with quite a bit of trauma. He was fired from his previous groomer for behaving terribly. He really is a love bug, he's just very big and very scared. Heather and her staff took Murphy on, and then we added Vera, another Giant who is almost three years old now. Heather had always been caring, affable and easy going. These dogs are anything but a breeze to deal with, and I love them! Heather tells the tales of their days with her, laughingly. I took our dog, who will be 12 and has a heart condition, in before 8 AM because they told me that would get him done earlier. When I called to check on status at 10:30, I was told they would probably be ready by noon. I stopped by at 12:15 and he had just been washed. When I went over at 4, he was still being worked on and would be 'another half hour.' This is even though I got up at 6 AM to make sure I got him in early, and also told them he had a heart condition and needed to get him back home early instead of all day. The only groomer we have found that has patience for our elderly pup. He is now 16 and can't stand for long period of times, shakes with arthritis, and I can only assume sits during most of his cut. They do a wonderful job with him and we feel comfortable every time we take him. To be fair, we do not expect a certain cut or perfection especially considering our dogs circumstances. We just need him cleaned up and cared for with patience and they deliver every time. They exceed our expectations. read more

I will never take my dogs back here again! We dropped them off at around 8:30. Lady at front asked if I had a time I wanted them back and I said no. Well that was bad on my end because at 1:00 they still hadn't gave my yorkie a hair cut after being there for 5 hours! When I did get them back they literally cut all her hair off her body and that has never happened before. Since we have gotten her back she has been shaking, scared to death, and clinging to her momma. I'm not sure what they did to her but I will know longer take my dogs here! They also leave them in cages for 5 hours and don't even attempt to take them to the bathroom. Freaking ridiculous! You think your leaving you pets with great people and then they go and do god knows what to them! You have been warned people!!! read more

We bring our dogs here regularly, but they don't do appointment times, so an 8 AM drop off and 5 pm pickup, means that our dogs are so stressed about like 8 hours in the crates while other dogs bark all day. The dogs are so stressed out that by the time they get home they have diarrhea, which often ends up in the house. Canine Design provided the absolute worst experience I have ever had as a consumer, in any industry. The young woman named Emily who runs the front desk rolled her eyes at drop off when I requested my dog's fur be kept long and then made a show of saying she was "COVERED in mats" in front of the other customers, which she was not. I reiterated that I did not want her cut too short and she said they would do their best. 7 hours later we were informed she was ready for pickup, which knowing what we saw after makes me extremely suspicious of what exactly took that long. When picked up, she was completely shaved to the skin from nose to tail. My boyfriend picked her up and he noticed she was shaking and acting extremely unsettled, completely out of character for our boisterous 11 month old Westy puppy. Not only that, there was a fresh mark on her back that they attempted to blame on my parents dogs, who she hadn't played with in weeks. It will take at least six months for her full coat and skirt to grow back. I called the following morning and calmly expressed that they shouldn't deviate that far from an owner's request, at which point the same Emily said "let me cut you off I TOLD YOU she was covered in mats." She continued to be defensive, rude and refused to listen to a word I said. Now reading the other reviews, it is obvious that they have a track record of not listening to customer requests, treating animals poorly and not being capable of anything other than a basic clipper cut. I will potentially be reporting them to animal control and the Better Business Bureau and with this review hope I prevent other owners and animals from going through the same horrible experience. read more

Haircuts have been fine but every time I have dropped my dogs off it has taken at least 8 hours. I can only assume they're crated for about 6 hours total. They come home dehydrated, stressed, and exhausted. They should really think about scheduling appointments rather than what they do now because it's ridiculous. I have two Shih-Tzus. I love those dogs dearly, but they don't like being brushed and I don't like brushing them. It's a hot, hairy mess. Every few months I waltz into Canine Designs, head hanging in shame with two unkempt dogs in tow. Going to the groomer with tangled dogs can be a daunting experience - it's like stepping on the scale at the doctor's office. You dread it, you feel guilty, you don't want to be judged. Enter Pam and her fabulous team of groomers. I have NEVER felt judged. My dogs and I have always been enthusiastically welcomed. They level with me - if my dogs have tangled ears or matted tails, they'll warn me that I shouldn't expect fluffy pooches upon my return. They are so thorough, so accommodating, and they are kind to me and my disheveled dogs! I really appreciate the service I get here. read more

We haven't been to this groomer in several years, but I was searching for a new groomer this morning and saw the review posted, and the rebuttal by the owner. It is long past due for me to put it out there what is going on at this shop. I took my dog there on TWO occasions. I always requested a "straight through"....I waited while they cut my dog because she gets so stressed out. I happened to arrive at the shop a little early and a lady came storming out with her dog. I went in and waited for service and the lady came back without her dog and gave the lady at the desk a good fussing claiming that her dog had been abused and that she would never come back. I was nervous about leaving my pup, but I did and she looked good when I came back, but was a total mental mess for three days afterwards. The next time I took her in, I decided to keep a close eye on what was going on in that shop! You can see where they are cutting the dogs.....I left, then came back after I walked past and saw my dog on the table. The groomer (thin with long hair) was pulling on her hair and calling her a bad dog and telling her to stay still. My dog was shaking and COULDN'T MOVE!!! I crouched down like I was looking at the dog food and the groomer continued to talk awful to my dog! It wasn't loud, but it was mean! When I stood up, again she was pulling on her beard! I demanded my dog and told the owner what I saw. She completely denied WHAT I SAW! I've told everyone I know NOT to take their dogs to this place. No dog should ever be treated the way these people treat animals....EVER! DO NOT TAKE ANY ANIMAL TO THIS PLACE!! I even drive an extra 20 miles to buy my dog's food, even though they carry it here and it's just down the road from me. Never again...................... read more

The owner is clearly trying to reinvent the situation. Bonnie is not overweight -- in fact, she had her physical right around the time of the appointment and our vet confirmed that she was at the correct weight for a senior -- which is very slim so that her senior frame is not taxed. Bonnie has never disliked anyone or bitten anyone. The owner is trying to make excuses and blame the dog when really her service is horrendous. Bonnie had been groomed 3 months prior. She was not matted. Bonnie came home with bald spots that were in thin strips like the shape of the shavers used on dogs. She was in pain from the rough treatment and looked horrendous for more than a month due to being shaved bald. What a joke this place is. This owner is despicable in her dishonesty. We know a few people who have had similar negative experiences and another online review posted a year ago also corroborates our experience. I would never trust this staff again. The other funny thing is that on another site, every time the owner got a negative review, there'd be a glowing review posted by the owner or her staff trying to compensate. I went here for a city tag and check out the grooming situation. I have two dogs that I have regularly groomed. The front desk was empty and although the groomers saw me come in, they made no attempt to even verbally greet me or even expedite someone getting to the desk. After a few minutes someone did come out to the desk. I must have interrupted her from something very important. It was clear that the last thing she wanted to do was help me with anything at all. She huffed and puffed about the city tag. I eventually left with it, but i will not interrupt this establishment again. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about this place. I have two pomeranians and I've had them get pretty badly cut in the past but this place does a great job every time. They always love my two little pups and take good care of them. There pricing is comparable to other places but it's definitely worth it here. Only complaint is when you put the address into a god it takes you no where near them so beware of that. Aside from that definitely give this place a good for your furry little friend! read more

This year I recently switched to this groomer. The first time, I had a fine experience. This next time, not so much. When I first came, I felt like the gal at the front desk was a bit judgmental about the fact that I hadn't been there in awhile and commented that I probably needed to have my dog cut. At first I said a trim, but then felt perhaps maybe he did need cut. Well, when I picked him up he was shaved. He has never been shaved. The standard cut for this dog is not SHAVED. I asked why he was shaved, and she said you said to cut him. I asked for a cut, not a shave. I have a friend who works in a vets office and she agreed, this was not a cut. read more

I was very disappointed with my experience....I usually take my 2 goldendoodles to a groomer in Va Beach but was looking for something closer to home...I did my research and heard a lot of great things about Canine Design and they've been around for years....as soon as I walked in with my 2 goldendoodles I was told that they would have to be completely shaved from nose to tail and that they were completely matted......when the groomer checked them she didn't show me a matte but still said that they would have to be fully shaved as they were completely matted....I ended up not leaving them and was able to take them directly to their normal groomer in Va Beach and they only found a couple small mattes on one of the boys heads that they were able to comb out and they look amazing...I was really disappointed, I was made to feel as though my dogs are unkept and that they were in terrible shape when in reality I think they just didn't want to take the time to do a proper groom and summer cut on two larger dogs...these were not two dogs that needed to be shaved in any way read more

Took our older, large breed dog in today for a summer grooming. It was his first time going for a cut since we adopted him. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Our dog was put at ease and well-cared for. His cut was exactly what we asked for, down to the trimming of his long-eyebrows and beard. Definitely will be returning! read more

I am signing up for a Yelp account to make this review/complaint! I took my baby boy in today for his summer cut and I couldn't have been more disappointed. My dog has basically been traumatized since I brought him home. Not to mention the CHUNK of his skin they CUT off around his butt. He has a 1 inch piece of bloody skin dangling off his back end. If I had seen this before we left the shop, I would have read them the riot act. I am astonished that it wasn't mentioned to me at all when I picked my baby up. The girl working at the front was rude when I came in to drop him off. When you work in customer service, you should always greet the customer when they enter your store . YOU should NOT be greeted BY the customer! Even though her attitude left a bad taste in my mouth, I left my pup there and I'm near tears thinking about what he might have gone through today. He is very sensitive, gets a lot of attention, and is treated like a human at home. I expect those same treatments when he's in other peoples care. It was clear to me today that he was NOT taken care of, by any means. I would have much rather donated the $50 to the SPCA and kept my dog with his fluffy mane for the summer. My mom took our dog here and it was honestly horrible the way they slacked. Everyone is really nice, but my dog was there all day and when he came home he was panting so hard and gulped down some water. They also told us that they couldn't clip his toenails but weren't going to take it out of the fee. Now, my dog is very sensitive and sometimes we have to pay the "bad boy" charge every once in a while, which is fine, we expect it. But we told them that he NEEDS his nails clipped, so she took him back and TWO MINUTES LATER his nails are clipped. They were just being lazy. He clearly didn't get water, I'm wondering if he got treats? Poor pup. Other places are a little more expensive but it might be worth it to pay a little extra for your dog to be well cared for. read more

Dropped dog off at 7:30 The place was darkly lit and no signs of any other animals (no noises heard) Said I need her back asap Owner said ok My dog is timid and not aggressive. The owner came around with a chokable leash/collar which I said nothing but was not pleased to see. called at 10 and asked for an update owner said that they opened the doors at 7:15 and that my dog was 6th in line owner said your dog is next owner called at 10:26 to tell me she was ready for pickup When I arrived I said communication would have been helpful so that I knew that my dog was the sixth to be cut Owner said I can't provide that information (Though she did on the phone at 10!) Owner said she opened the doors at 6:45 this morning (Not sure why this was provided) I asked if they knew they had a terrible online rating Owner stated that she did not and that her belief was that they had a great rating (then said that the bad ratings were old!) Owner stated they don't like to rush the process and it usually takes a couple hours to cut a pet I asked to be rung up as I'd had enough lies for one day The final verdict: They lie and mislead and I will not be returning. read more

This was my first and last visit to this store. I should have known that my experience would have been poor after I called the store and was talked to very rudely. We were debating going to another location that was further away, but we decided to go here because it was closer. We were going to get our two lab's nails cut (which they charge $12 while the other location charges $9.) My wife and I figured it was worth the extra money because it was closer. They clipped our first dog's nails with no problem. Then they clipped our second dog. They ended up cutting his nail way to close and made it bleed. They said our dog was wild and needed to go to obedience school, but when they brought it back to my wife she told him to sit and lay down and he did it right then (needless to say they felt pretty foolish for what they had said). What really happened when he was back there was that they cut his first nail to close and it made him freak out, and of course they said they did not do it, and it must have been done prior to him going into the store. NOT A VERY GOOD COVER UP STORY. Once we left my wife told me she was about to cry. They were so rude to her, and what makes things worse was the owner was the one who was responsible for this situation. So please do not make the same mistake we made. I have been taking my dog to Canine Designs for years and I have never had any of these problems. My dog is very spolied and we have a hard time being apart. But I never think twice about leaving my baby girl with these ladies. (Pam, Amy, Lindsay, Louise or Maria ). As a matter of fact she is always happy to go there. These ladies really do love and care about the dogs that come thru that door !!!! They only want the best and always offer helpful tips. They have never been rude or spoken about anyone coming or going thru that door. However we all need to understand that this is a work place and the girls are up front and sometimes they share stories about their kids and family members, that may not have anything to do with anyone coming or going from Canine Designs. ( Also please keep in mind that these ladies are upfront and out in the open at all times, because they have nothing to hide, they are not behind close doors and as a pet owner I am very pleased with that. I feel if things where shady they would not have it open for all the world to see)....We also have to understand that you can't make everyone happy all the time and I am sure that if you were to look into things you would see there is more to the story. If I were Canine Designs I would not spent one second trying to defend myself to these Neg comments... Some people you just can't make happy and that is okay they just need to find someone else.
