One of the great Delis in the area. been in business for as long as I can remember. Fantastic true NJ Sloppy Joes, and really fresh food. Party platters, and the BEST home made potato salad ever. They cook the potato's in house, and use top quality "name brand " mayo. You can get it with or without eggs. Plus a full compliment of chips, sodas, and all the other major food groups. If you want to get a sloppy Joe, get there early, as they sell out fast, and every one knows that a really good Sloppy Joe needs to marinate in the fridge for at least 3 to four hours for the true experience. Down home kinda deli -- looks like a family-run establishment, long lines and a huge menu indicate this place has been around awhile. I ordered the turkey bone that came with cranberry sauce and added brie and lettuce to my order... the lettuce was shredded just the way I like on a whole wheat roll. We came here on a recommendation from a friend who grew up in Chatham. He swore they had THE BEST sloppy Joe here and I think he may be right. So far I've only ever had them at Millburn Deli and Town Hall Deli and this one might be the tastiest. It was definitely the sloppiest (in a good way). It was pretty empty on a Saturday afternoon and took about 10 minutes for the guy to make the sandwich. I read on here that they pre-make the Joes but he made this one fresh. We got the roast beef and turkey Joe to bring back home. Sandwich was ~$10 and cut into three sections. For a $10 sandwich (little on the pricy side for a take out deli sandwich) I kind of wish it had come with a pickle- it would have complemented the sandwich really well. In hindsight we should have bought one of the giant pickles they have in a jar on the counter. The staff was friendly and the sandwich was delicious. Their slaw was top notch- that may have been what put it over the top. Do not attempt to eat this sandwich in your car or on the go. Prepare to make a mess of yourself and be really satisfied. best sloppy joe available in new jersey hands down. excellently rare roast beef, and a stupid amount of russian. after soaking in the fridge for the pre-requisite 20 min minimum (if you're unlucky enough to not score a pre-made one), its easily one of the best sandwiches you'll ever have. they also offer great "weekly special" sandwiches, where they take one of their specialty sandwiches and offer it at a reduced price all week. all the subs here are excellent. nothing too fancy, but its a great classic deli. style points for having joe's tea. read more

This place is straight up legendary. At lot of Jersey spots will claim to have the best sloppy joe (cold cut style, not Manwich), but Hickory Tree no question has it on lock. They've got roast beef, ham and turkey joes pre-made and ready to go. Here's a little trick... If you want a fresh one, just ask for a joe with one of the aforementioned meats, but request provolone cheese (the pre-made ones have swiss). Now don't get me wrong, the pre-mades are bomb, the sometimes you just want a freshy. The Russian dressing and Rye bread is great, and the cold cuts and cheeses are fresh as can be, but the thing that really separates Hickory Tree's joes from all the other joes out there is the coleslaw. It's literally the best on Earth. Hickory also had amazing T-ham, egg & cheeses, and ridiculously good frozen Italian dinners. 5 star! read more

Honestly i have such fond memories of this place. I used to come every sunday as a kid and then go over to castle park with my family. They have always had the best subs, but the last 3 times I have gone they put on one measly layer of meat, so i'm basically paying $10 for lettuce and tomato on a roll when i should be getting a loaded up italian sub! I'm disappointed to say that I won't come back again and I'll continue my business at Green Village Deli (just as close and 1000 times better)! read more

Love this place. The sandwiches are delicious, if not kind of expensive (turkey and Swiss wrap with lettuce and tomato is just under $10 w tax). Service is friendly. We recently moved here and this charming family owned deli was our first experience w NJ. First of all the service is extraordinary. Every time I go in the owner & other employees greet their customers by name. They are very attentive and polite. Now the food is even better. So far we've tried the sloppy joe, BBQ pork panini, spinach salad, kale salad, chicken noodle soup and rice pudding. Everything is amazing- especially the pudding. I've also started buying my deli meat and rolls/French bread here. This is our favorite place to bring friends when they visit. It may be small (only outdoor seating) but well worth it. read more

I grew up in Morristownship in the 50's and 60's lived for 15years in Basking Ridge New Jersey and now I live in New Hope PA., and still I drive all the way to Hickory Tree for the absolute best Sloppy Joe's I have ever eaten. Each year we have a Fourth on July Birthday Party and I drive (two + hours round trip) to pick up the Joe Platters. Now some of our party guests ask us to bring the platters to their gatherings and we do. I think the people that work there are wonderful and they work very hard to serve their patrons quickly and efficiently. I cannot imagine anyone not being more than pleased with Hickory Tree! The food and service is outstanding. I usually order either the Sloppy Joes, eggplant sandwiches, cobb salad, soup or the avacado BLT ( it has well cooked bacon). They sell a lot of sloppy joes, but all their sandwiches are really good. They do a big business catering ..especially the sandwich platters. If you go during lunch time they will have a long line, but it goes by quickly! They have take out Italian favorites like ziti etc, really good chicken pot pies (stuffed with chicken) and quiche. Overpriced. For the most rude people (serious attitude problem). With the exception of one or two guys (and there are a couple of them) they don't take pride in what they do.
