I have had the chicken, pulled pork, and brisket, hojos, fries, Cole slaw, and Mac (at different times, not all at once lol) and it's all pretty good. I'm not a Mac person so it wasn't for me, but kids would love it. I really love the brisket and how flavorful it is, and it's not overly dry. The chicken wings are no joke, however you order them. The hojos remind me of campfire potatoes, never mad at that. Cole slaw is well seasoned and not soupy. I've had the pulled pork twice, first time was great, second time it ate dry, will order a third time to know how I really feel. WOW, I was pleasantly surprised with the wings and hojos. This place was nostalgic for my boyfriend as his dad used to bring these wings to him as a child but they were at a different restaurant (shorty n wags). I believe they are closed so he's been on the hunt to find ones identical to those ones and these were exactly that. Staff was welcoming and helpful but nothing over the top. Inside is a little small but enough room to sit down and eat if you'd like. The dry rub on the wings was very flavorful with a sweet and spicy flavor. The hojos and wings were cooked to perfection. These thinly sliced potatoes are in between a potato chip and scalp potatoes and they were seasoned very well. We also got a side of the Mac n cheese and honestly I'd skip it in the future. It lacked flavor and tasted like cardboard so it was a hard no for me. It filled my boyfriend's craving of those nostalgic wings he had as a child. My union bargaining AFSME order food from this company and it was $100.00. I ordered a catfish dinner, and it came back looking and tasting like Tilapia. The portion size was smaller than a kid's meal. It wasn't even a scope serving size of red beans and rice. The French Fries tasted like they were seasoned with cinnamon. I couldn't take the food back because our hospital was in union voting. Tried to call and speak with Michelle the manager and she was nonchalant stating that was two days ago. Once again no one could leave. I'll never shop here again. They need cooking classes one on one. It must be an up north thing because most of the food is garbage. Even popeyes is trash up here. Great little hole in the wall. I have been going here for years and the chicken wings are always outstanding. They have a unique dry rub and have a variety of sauces on the side. I balked but my sister in law insisted the food was delicious. We ordered 24 wings and the Mac and Cheese. Indeed my sister in law was correct. The wings were absolutely delicious. Best fried wings in St. Paul. I picked them up for takeout on Thursday when they offer the wing special. We tried them with the seasoning but now we always order them without the seasoning. They make your wing order fresh and they are still hot when you get them home. The wings are so good and are nicely complimented by the buffalo sauce and blue cheese. The Hojos are the best side for the yummy fried wings. The greens were very good and spicy when I had them. Not a great experience. First time stopping in and there definitely won't be a second stop in unfortunately. I've always heard of hickory hut being a staple in Saint Paul. I was given wrong information, to begin with the first red flag was the gentleman at the counter looked like he was partly there; partially paying attention. We should've picked up on it when the guy ahead of us pointed out his order was rang incorrectly.... Because ours was as well, but that's later and seemed to be the least of our worries. The side dishes we ordered we lack luster. The Mac and cheese was powdery not creamy, texture was horrible. The ho jo's were the star of the show but soggier than a bowl of oats. The greens were full of stems (the bitter parts) the gizzards were seasoned with a light splash of air and slight chance of oops we forgot the other seasoning. Taste was bland. We were charged for the red beans and rice and never received them. Bummer missing out on the money but blessed to not have tried another one of their sides. On to the main course. The chicken wings, cooked perfectly honestly and they were big and plumb with a lot of meat. As to the flavor, well it was as if the batch was seasoned by Stevie wonder himself. Quite literally 3 out of the 12 wings had been seasoned. They were really good at that. The vibe of the place is what you'd expect a nice lil hood joint in the center of frogtown so right at home for me. When the option presents itself, eat at home or hickory hut again. I was craving wings, no surprise there. I went to check this place out on advice of a coworker. I ordered wings with the ho jos and baked beans. The wings have good flavor and they are pretty large. So the 8 piece I ordered was a lot of food. Not to mention that they give you a huge portion of the ho joes. The wings were kind of greasy vs crispy. The hojos were good with plenty of seasoning. After a 20+ year relationship I am writing this review to share a very unpleasant experience. On my way home Friday, June 10, 2022, I stopped to pick up 24 plain wings and an order of plain jojo's. I paid for my order and waited for it. I put the food in the back of my car and started driving home. The aroma of the wings in the car made me pull over and check my order. The wings were not plain but had the seasoning on them. I called back to say my order was wrong and said I was coming back and would like plain wings and plain jojos. Upon my return, the person that took my order said I never said plain. I have been purchasing this same order for more than 2 decades and now it's a challenge...The woman behind the counter insisted she took my order correctly and she insisted I was wrong. She went on to say I was rude to her. How should a customer feel when your order is wrong, you call back to tell them and when you arrive the person chooses to argue with you. She told me they would not remake my order and then proceeded to refund my money. She tried to keep the tip that I had initially paid. It was clearly on my banking app. This was such a disheartening experience I don't know if there will be a next time for me. Twenty plus years as a customer and this is how I'm treated. I used to go to Hickory hut to get wings for work parties and at times for myself, and recommended many people to go there. I went to Hickory Hut on Saturday July 11th and ordered wings and corn bread which came in the form of a muffin. The wings were okay but not like they used to be and I had to remove many feathers from the wings and they were overcooked. The corn muffins were burnt on the bottom that they almost broke my teeth! The first time I was introduced to Hickory Hut I was at a Church event. The smell alone made be curious about where did this chicken come from? After trying a couple of pieces I asked where the wings were ordered from because I could tell they were in a take-out box and not homemade. The person told me they were from "Hickory Hut" I went on Google and found the closest location and the rest was history. I love their BBQ sauce as well as their sweet and sour sauce with my wings but often times I dont even need it. The special surprise in the sweet and sour sauce is the pinneaple which is delicious. I would pass on the coleslaw, like other reviewers have said it is too watery. Besides the coleslaw I have had their hojo potatoes and enjoyed them as a solid compliment to my wings! I've been coming here since I was a kid! The smell reminds me of cold winter evenings catching the 16 down University Ave to get a family box of Art Song's chicken. Sucking the wings of their unique seasoning and then taking the bones and using them as a scoop to eat the sweet and sour sauce. OMG. Today I am here with my kids and I can't wait to show them the proper way of eating Hickory Hut's chicken. Tuesday and Thursday have specials for their chicken. Like 24 pieces for $23. However when I asked in a polite tone of voice for a receipt, she flung it at me and went back to tending to her nails! Amazing!
