I am so sorry I have done a disservice to the Yelp community. Hickory hut has been a go to spot in my family for over 25 years. It is a staple In the frog town community and a classic favorite amongst those that know about it. When you order wings you're getting the whole wing baby - overly seasoned and crisped to perfection. Chicken so good it makes you wanna slap yo mama. The end. read more

I have had the chicken, pulled pork, and brisket, hojos, fries, Cole slaw, and Mac (at different times, not all at once lol) and it's all pretty good. I'm not a Mac person so it wasn't for me, but kids would love it. I really love the brisket and how flavorful it is, and it's not overly dry. The chicken wings are no joke, however you order them. The hojos remind me of campfire potatoes, never mad at that. Cole slaw is well seasoned and not soupy. I've had the pulled pork twice, first time was great, second time it ate dry, will order a third time to know how I really feel. Overall a nice little BBQ hidden gem on University and I'm a fan. read more

WOW, I was pleasantly surprised with the wings and hojos. This place was nostalgic for my boyfriend as his dad used to bring these wings to him as a child but they were at a different restaurant (shorty n wags). I believe they are closed so he's been on the hunt to find ones identical to those ones and these were exactly that. Staff was welcoming and helpful but nothing over the top. Inside is a little small but enough room to sit down and eat if you'd like. The dry rub on the wings was very flavorful with a sweet and spicy flavor. The hojos and wings were cooked to perfection. These thinly sliced potatoes are in between a potato chip and scalp potatoes and they were seasoned very well. We also got a side of the Mac n cheese and honestly I'd skip it in the future. It lacked flavor and tasted like cardboard so it was a hard no for me. It filled my boyfriend's craving of those nostalgic wings he had as a child. Besides the Mac, I would rate the food a solid 5/5 and will definitely be back. read more

The food is always good but the price is a little high now and they used to have a deal on thursdays.

The best in town. Locals know it and trusted. You will not be dissatisfied with the wings ever.

Always love their fried wings and I have for over 10 years. I recommend to anyone craving some chicken and jojos

This place is TRASH!!!!!! the french fries were not done all the way through the coleslaw smells rotten and looks like soup the chicken is not tasty. I'm not a hater I have no time to write negative reviews about peoples food on yelp but if I can save at least one person from trying this place I consider this time well spent. P.S. Places like this are social proof that if you have a food business you want to do just go do it because somehow these people are in business and can pay rent and their employees with absolute garbage quality food. read more

I loved these wings and seasoned rice since they first opened on lake st in south Minneapolis back in the 90's. Top five favorite chicken joint in Minnesota. read more

Best wings anywhere, ever. Plus, the best wings anywhere, ever. Rice is wonderful, hojos are great, and the best wings anywhere, ever. I always intend to try other menu items, the BBQ looks good, but always end up with the wings. Because they are the best wings anywhere ever. They offer sauce, but it's a crime to cover the taste of the best wings anywhere ever. read more

Had the 1/2 beef rib dinner and a 1/2 order of ribtips. Both ribs were overly sauced. The pork ribs tips being the better of the 2 because the pork flavor was more pronounced. The seasoned rice that accompanied the dinner as 1 of the 2 sides was plain white rice topped with a bbq dust. read more

Not a cozy, sit down joint though you can...but if you want hot, spicy wings with an excellent range of sauces, Hickory Hut hits the spot. Nice range of your basic soul food sides (tend to be partial to the spiced, buttered rice or the hojos). Parking is a little tricky so advise you putting in your order ahead of time so you can park, walk in and get on your way. read more

My union bargaining AFSME order food from this company and it was $100.00. I ordered a catfish dinner, and it came back looking and tasting like Tilapia. The portion size was smaller than a kid's meal. It wasn't even a scope serving size of red beans and rice. The French Fries tasted like they were seasoned with cinnamon. I couldn't take the food back because our hospital was in union voting. Tried to call and speak with Michelle the manager and she was nonchalant stating that was two days ago. Once again no one could leave. I'll never shop here again. They need cooking classes one on one. It must be an up north thing because most of the food is garbage. Even popeyes is trash up here. Famous Dave's taste better than this place!!! Just food for thought. I gave a review on Google also. I hated giving a one star. read more

Food was good but the location sucks. No parking at all. There was a guy following me in until I went inside and multiple people came in. Looks like no one wants to eat inside. Everyone ordered take out. The food wasn't ready on time but other than that, it was okay. Not sure if we would come back. read more

Great little hole in the wall. I have been going here for years and the chicken wings are always outstanding. They have a unique dry rub and have a variety of sauces on the side. There is a whole menu available, but I have never strayed from the wings. The service is friendly and the restaurant is clean. A great staple to the Frogtown neighborhood! read more

Was not impressed with the food. Service was ok but when my food came it was cold. I would say the atmosphere was better than what they offer. I would not come back only if I'm really hungry and want to just eat something. read more

I've gone here for over 20years, will not go back. The wings we're small, dry and greasy. And the price has gotten ridiculous, Tuesday and Thursday wing specials $25. They no longer offer any specials and you now pay $40. Not at all worth it read more

I'm not a local. I was visiting my brother and his family and they suggested we order wings from this establishment. I quickly looked at the business on Yelp and saw that it had only 3 stars. I balked but my sister in law insisted the food was delicious. We ordered 24 wings and the Mac and Cheese. Indeed my sister in law was correct. The wings were absolutely delicious. One negative I should mention is that the menu prices on Yelp are not current prices. My order came to $50. read more

Best fried wings in St. Paul. I picked them up for takeout on Thursday when they offer the wing special. We tried them with the seasoning but now we always order them without the seasoning. They make your wing order fresh and they are still hot when you get them home. The wings are so good and are nicely complimented by the buffalo sauce and blue cheese. The Hojos are the best side for the yummy fried wings. The greens were very good and spicy when I had them. I usually add hot sauce to my greens but it was not needed because they were so nicely seasoned and spicy. They have a great menu of other items but the wings and hojos are my favorites! read more

I was craving wings, no surprise there. I went to check this place out on advice of a coworker. I ordered wings with the ho jos and baked beans. The wings have good flavor and they are pretty large. So the 8 piece I ordered was a lot of food. Not to mention that they give you a huge portion of the ho joes. The wings were kind of greasy vs crispy. The hojos were good with plenty of seasoning. I would recommend this location if you want some good wings in a pinch. The price is a little speedy though. $19 for this meal. read more

Not a great experience. First time stopping in and there definitely won't be a second stop in unfortunately. I've always heard of hickory hut being a staple in Saint Paul. I was given wrong information, to begin with the first red flag was the gentleman at the counter looked like he was partly there; partially paying attention. We should've picked up on it when the guy ahead of us pointed out his order was rang incorrectly.... Because ours was as well, but that's later and seemed to be the least of our worries. The side dishes we ordered we lack luster. The Mac and cheese was powdery not creamy, texture was horrible. The ho jo's were the star of the show but soggier than a bowl of oats. The greens were full of stems (the bitter parts) the gizzards were seasoned with a light splash of air and slight chance of oops we forgot the other seasoning. Taste was bland. We were charged for the red beans and rice and never received them. Bummer missing out on the money but blessed to not have tried another one of their sides. On to the main course. The chicken wings, cooked perfectly honestly and they were big and plumb with a lot of meat. As to the flavor, well it was as if the batch was seasoned by Stevie wonder himself. Quite literally 3 out of the 12 wings had been seasoned. They were really good at that. The vibe of the place is what you'd expect a nice lil hood joint in the center of frogtown so right at home for me. When the option presents itself, eat at home or hickory hut again. I've got plenty of the frogtown midway area vibe right in our own kitchen. read more

After a 20+ year relationship I am writing this review to share a very unpleasant experience. On my way home Friday, June 10, 2022, I stopped to pick up 24 plain wings and an order of plain jojo's. I paid for my order and waited for it. I put the food in the back of my car and started driving home. The aroma of the wings in the car made me pull over and check my order. The wings were not plain but had the seasoning on them. I called back to say my order was wrong and said I was coming back and would like plain wings and plain jojos. Upon my return, the person that took my order said I never said plain. I have been purchasing this same order for more than 2 decades and now it's a challenge...The woman behind the counter insisted she took my order correctly and she insisted I was wrong. She went on to say I was rude to her. How should a customer feel when your order is wrong, you call back to tell them and when you arrive the person chooses to argue with you. She told me they would not remake my order and then proceeded to refund my money. She tried to keep the tip that I had initially paid. It was clearly on my banking app. This was such a disheartening experience I don't know if there will be a next time for me. Twenty plus years as a customer and this is how I'm treated. A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT . read more

I used to go to Hickory hut to get wings for work parties and at times for myself, and recommended many people to go there. I went to Hickory Hut on Saturday July 11th and ordered wings and corn bread which came in the form of a muffin. The wings were okay but not like they used to be and I had to remove many feathers from the wings and they were overcooked. The corn muffins were burnt on the bottom that they almost broke my teeth! I really want to support this eatery so I will call to speak with a manager to let them know that it's very easy to lose customers over bad quality food. read more

This isn't your sit-down and enjoy type of place, but my family and I have been coming here for more than 20 years (2-gen) for call-ahead pickup of our 24 wings and rib tip bucket almost weekly. It's amazing, not fancy, not impressive other than flavor. Love this place and hope people give it a shot. P.S. I've heard their ho-jo's are good too but I generally don't like them so I can't say. read more

Art, please comeback!!! As nice as they were the young gentlemen running your place may run you out of business. The rib tips were absolutely awful. There was no sign of any rub taste wise. Some were fairly fresh, some were bone dry and tough like little leather hockey pucks... didn't try the greens because honestly I threw everything away which makes me sad because I LOVE BBQ buy now have to find another dinner. Thought about giving what was left to someone less fortunate but that would have been mean. Hopefully I can get this after taste out of my mouth. read more

Hickory Hut - Receipt to prove I was there today. - Barbeque Near Me - Saint Paul, Minnesota

The first time I was introduced to Hickory Hut I was at a Church event. The smell alone made be curious about where did this chicken come from? After trying a couple of pieces I asked where the wings were ordered from because I could tell they were in a take-out box and not homemade. The person told me they were from "Hickory Hut" I went on Google and found the closest location and the rest was history. I love their BBQ sauce as well as their sweet and sour sauce with my wings but often times I dont even need it. The special surprise in the sweet and sour sauce is the pinneaple which is delicious. I would pass on the coleslaw, like other reviewers have said it is too watery. Besides the coleslaw I have had their hojo potatoes and enjoyed them as a solid compliment to my wings! Can't get enough of hickory hut! This place is small but it carries big weight and keeps me coming back for more! Oh, FYI, they are closed on Sundays. read more

Three words only: ART SONGS' RECIPE Yes, the original Art Song's recipe that you miss so much is HERE. And it's exactly the same recipe to a T. This is life changing for me. But seriously, if you're familiar with South Minneapolis, you may remember a place called Shorty N' Wags on 38th and Nicollet. They too had the Art Songs' original recipe until it closed some years back. This was about 6 blocks from where I grew up. So you can imagine my excitement when I found my lost love again. Hickory Hut is off University and Snelling Ave right across the street from the Green Line light rail station. They have their own parking lot, have take out, and online ordering. Service does not matter here because you do not eat here. Once inside you'll see that it is not pleasing to the eye to sit and dine. That's why you order for pick up. Also this way you get to drool over your wings in the privacy of your own home. So all you need to know: -ART SONGS' original recipe -A 12 piece chicken order is $18.99 -DO NOT DINE IN -Call for pick up -Don't order just 4 wings.....you'll regret. read more

I already have a much, much more extensive review for this place, under "Art Song's Wings" (which is what the wings at Hickory Hut are!) My parents have followed these wings around the cities, and I have been eating them since I was a wee one. Oh em gee, they are so good. Only go on a Tuesday or Thursday. Get the Wing Special, with BBQ and Sweet and Sour (my fav!) and get some JoJo potatoes. Fill a giant cup with some Strawberry Soda and wait. Now here is the fun part. Get in your car, with your boxed up wings, and see if you can make it all the way home without breaking into the box. It's almost intoxicating. read more

I've been coming here since I was a kid! The smell reminds me of cold winter evenings catching the 16 down University Ave to get a family box of Art Song's chicken. Sucking the wings of their unique seasoning and then taking the bones and using them as a scoop to eat the sweet and sour sauce. OMG. Today I am here with my kids and I can't wait to show them the proper way of eating Hickory Hut's chicken. Tuesday and Thursday have specials for their chicken. Like 24 pieces for $23. I've never had anything else on their menu, to be honest... but why would you want to eat anything other than their chicken? Worth the trek from N. Minneapolis during rush hour. read more

The food is terrific, especially the beef ribs, wings, and of course their world famous jojos!! I was reading some of the reviews. One of the reviews said that owner Cheryl was wonderful. I wonder if this Cheryl lady was the same owner in 2009. Because if she was she wasn't wonderful back then! Once in 2009, I ordered some food there and the service I got there was fine. However when I asked in a polite tone of voice for a receipt, she flung it at me and went back to tending to her nails! Amazing! If she is the same owner from 2009, I just want to say if you have a certain man of color in the window of your rib shack, you should not be snotty to a customer who looks like that same man of color for just simply asking for well of all things a receipt! read more

I'm reading a mystery called The Cornbread Killer by Lou Jane Temple. Naturally its on my mind. It was helpful to run into Ashley's BBQ list. I'm used to TGI Fridays wings, when I saw these they looked like something out of the prehistoric era. I followed the recommended rib tips, very tender. Jojo potatoes, thinly sliced some crispier than the others are delicious with the bbq sauce on them. I had a hard time deciding on a side and they let me sample. Beans were good, mac and cheese ok, but not homemade. That put me off, it should always be homemade at a place like this. But for an extra small charge I could get greens, made with a hamhock. On the spicy side wasn't sure if it was from pepper or hot sauce, but they were nice and firm and not runny like they were at Brasa. Kind of like the difference between Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin. The soul is here. read more
