Poor Calvin's - Drunken noodle scallops and lobster tail with shrimp

What an awesome spot! I was in ATL for a conference and had researched several restaurants for a…read morecolleague dinner. Poor Calvin's looked so interesting and when I sent it to my colleague, they were very interested. We took a quick Lyft ride from the conference center. What a cute restaurant! It's cozy and the space is utilized so efficiently. The staff were so warm and welcoming as well as attentive. Our lovely waitress provided vivid descriptions of each of the dishes that we either asked about or ordered, which made us even more excited to receive our meal! We started with the beignets (without the crab dip; it was supplemented with pimento cheese). They were savory and delicious, with I think pecorino cheese and balsamic glaze. It came with 4 generously sized beignets and we big had to stop after one to leave room for our meal! For entrees, my colleague got the seafood curry and I got the drunken noodles with tofu. Both of these dishes were very generous portions and quite spicy! The tofu in the drunken noodles had a very light (tempura?) batter with a sort of Chinese salt and pepper seasoning. My colleague's seafood curry came with a HUGE lobster tail, lots of mussels and other seafood plus a side of green (!) rice. Everything was so good. We had leftovers to take with us to the hotel. Highly recommend checking out Poor Calvin's if you get the chance!

I opted for one of their specials which was a lamb meatloaf w/ gravy ontop and it came with a lobster tail and mashed potatoes for $55. The meatloaf seem to have more filler in it and I could barely taste the lamb. The sauce ontop was okay. The mashed potatoes were bland. The best thing was the lobster tail. I got the suspension cake which was highly raved about according to the reviews. It was good but not the best dessert I've ever had. It's a HUGE slice of cake so if you order it, share it with others or take it home. I split it between the 3 of us and we still couldn't finish it. Service was great and the host was kind enough to save me a table. They get BUSY the moment they open the door, so if you don't have reservations, get there 15 minutes prior to opening. It's hard to get in there. Would I'd come back? Eh. I can't say that I was that impressed or curious enough to try anything else. It is a bit pricey but not so unaffordable.. come check l it out for yourself.

PARKING (4/5): They have some parking right in front or you…read morecan park on the grass/dirt nearby. It looks like make-shift parking, but everyone was doing it so I just followed the trend! AMBIANCE (4/5): Tons of indoor & outdoor patio seating, although it seemed like everyone pre-ordered or picked up to go. They have 2 long communal tables and a ton of 2-4 people tables. The wood tables make it look rustic, pop music playing so it's not awkwardly quiet. SERVICE (3/5): You order at the counter first, a single cashier, but it goes fairly quickly. Most of the staff is in the back kitchen. It's more "serve yourself". You grab your own drinks from the fridge, all utensils, napkins, and water are already on the table, and throw your own trash away, everything is in disposable containers. FOOD (4/5): $22 BUILD YOUR OWN BOWL: I personally didn't like the signature rice, I wanted the crispy rice fritters but they were sold out at 1:30pm on a Friday. The crispy Brussels were AMAZING! Definitely get this for a (+$2.50 upgrade). Bulgogi ribeye was sweet and delicious! Cashier offered a side of spicy Korean sauce which I didn't realize I'd be charged for, just wish she told me it was an additional cost (+$0.75). It doesn't need any extra sauce, the bowls are very saucy! And I'm a heavy sauce person. Also added a fried egg (+$2). The bowl was very delicious, minus the signature rice, I'd get all crispy Brussels next time! $4 BUTTERFLY TEA: very sweet, but good! $4 MINI COOKIES (4-PACK): I got 2 chocolate chip and 2 banana chip cookies. A little dry, but yummy. OVERALL (4/5): This is a FAST-CASUAL restaurant. They ask for automatic tip at the cashier, but you pretty much service yourself except when they bring out the food. I honestly wasn't expecting to spend this much for a quick lunch (total was $36), but I wanted to try everything. Now I know what I like and don't like here and excited to try some of the other bowl options! Definitely recommend this place! Very yummy!

I ordered the Shandong braised chicken, a dish presented with its protein resting atop a glossy sauce and a generous scattering... ten or more pieces of accompanying dough. In theory, this bread should serve as both sponge and companion, absorbing the depth of the braise and rounding the dish into comfort. In practice, it was profoundly compromised. The dough was unmistakably moldy, visibly, undeniably so. This alone is alarming in any dining establishment; it signals a breakdown not just in execution, but in fundamental kitchen vigilance. More troubling than the oversight itself was the response. When the issue was brought to the attention of the waiter, the reaction suggested familiarity rather than concern as though such an occurrence fell within the realm of the expected. There was no urgency, no visible embarrassment, no effort to meaningfully rectify the moment. The tone felt faintly dismissive. The effect on the room was immediate: the couple seated ahead of us, having witnessed the exchange, opted against ordering an entrée at all. That, in itself, speaks volumes. There were, however, redeeming elements. The spicy beef was well-prepared, delivering heat with balance rather than bravado. The diced potatoes were excellent, crisp at the edges, tender within, and seasoned with confidence. These dishes hinted at a kitchen capable of competence, even finesse, when fundamentals align. The atmosphere added an unexpected layer. Spa music drifted through the dining room an odd choice for a meal that aims to be bold and hearty, creating a tonal dissonance that never quite resolved. Service hovered in the realm of "acceptable," buoyed largely by polite refrains of "yes sir" and "no ma'am," though these formalities felt more like compensation for a lack of true attentiveness than genuine hospitality. I would not go so far as to discourage anyone from dining here. There is promise, and there are flashes of real quality. But I would offer this advice plainly and without drama: inspect your food carefully. Mold has no place on the plate, and until that reality is treated with the seriousness it demands, the experience remains compromised no matter how good the potatoes may be.

The bartender and service were also great, so no complaints there. The problem was the main reason you come to a place like this: the noodles. My lo mein came out cold, completely lacking flavor, and the texture was mushy. Even when it came back hot, it still tasted like nothing, which is disappointing when noodles are supposed to be the star. On top of that, paying $16.99 for basic garlic vegetables feels unreasonable, especially when the food quality didn't match the price. Overall, service was solid, a couple dishes were good, but the food that should define the restaurant fell flat. With the price point being what it is, I'm not sure I'd rush back.
