I have been a long time customer at this place and was quite disappointed today. I bought a Leoville Poyferre 200 from them for $180 After opening the bottle last night, the wine was not right. I had this wine couple times at a restaurant and wanted to enjoy it home. I brought back the wine the next day to hi times hoping they can replace it with a proper one and help me on this. They made it seem like it was my taste buds. I had someone else try the wine and it clearly was not right. Gary (the wine guy) made either seem like the wine was not that bad but it was not also good. I strongly believe they did not preserve the wine properly. To make me happy. They offered me to go half way. Offering me a $60 wine replacement. I was very disappointed in that. After voicing my disappointment, he went up his offer for a $80 wine. I ended up losing money on what was supposed to be a special treat. I will not be buying them anymore and it's sad because it was my favorite liquor store for many years. 2 star for at least trying to do something about it by giving me another bottle instead. Family owned wine cellar and spirits shop, serving the people of Costa Mesa since 1957. They have a 3000 square foot underground temperature-controlled cellar, which houses 10,000+ wines from around the world. Their staff is made up of three generations of relatives, all highly knowledgeable of wine and spirits. The shop is well organized, and products are fairly priced. I was in search of a specific bottle of Blanton's for a Christmas gift, and had a hard time finding it anywhere else. Hi-Time had plenty of it, at the best price I'd seen. Hi-Time is probably my favorite place to buy alcohol in OC now. I'm already a member of many wineries and will occasionally buy spirits directly from the producer; however when I need to go to a local spot that I know will have a great selection, Hi-Time is my place. Their selection can tickle anyone's fancy from acclaimed DRC wines and Mouton-Rothschild to cult staples like Sine Qua Non and Saxum. On the liquor side, they have so many choices ranging from a variety of different Blanton's bottles to Lagavulins that are even older than me! I also love how they hold tastings on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Sometimes they'll even take walk-ins for them as well. But there aren't a lot of places that have tastings for good alcohol around the area. They have a calendar of events for what they'll be pouring every month and it's always a fun time. For years I've heard about this place but, as it's not all that convenient for me, I've never visited until now. And wow! I was blown away once I stepped through their doors. Completely overwhelmed. If you are wanting wines from small wineries you've never heard of or hard-to-find wines, this is your place. Their "wine cellar" has row after row of wines with descriptive placards for nearly every one. The wines are sorted by location and type and then alphabetically. I spent much longer than I anticipated walking along the rows of wine, reading the descriptions and discovering many, many labels that were new to me. Prices range from under $20 to over $100. This seemed to be a place for people who like the better wines within that wide price range. But don't feel like you have to know anything about wine to shop here - it's the type of place that's perfect for both first-time wine buyers and wine aficionados. I walked out with a couple of bottles which I'm excited to try; my wine app gives them high ratings. Yes, they have all sorts of other booze there too as well as cigars but I honestly just spent time, too much time, in their wine area so can't speak to anything but that. Customer service is great. I was gently approached at one point by an employee who asked if they could help me find anything specific or answer any questions. The cashiers are kind and quick. It might sound odd but I had a fun time here just discovering new labels and am certain I'll have even more fun trying them. read more

Just in luck, this place had it in store and not just that they rare editions of Blanton's! It's rare enough to have a regular bottle of Blanton's, but to have the gold edition or the "import" green label edition (made popular by John Wick) available well... that simply doesn't happen. So I got my bottles I needed and explored the place more. Large selections of anything you need alcohol and even a nice cigar section. Skip the large chain of alcohol vendors and go to this spot. A place that I've always thought was a local go to where I can find any wine in the world. I was looking for a good Italian wine and an $80 wine was listed with high ratings! I tried it and was disappointing! I have shopped here many times and been quite happy so the one time that I asked for a refund I was denied and told this wine was up to its ratings. I love Hi-Time. They have a huge selection of wine, but also tons of bottles that I can't find anywhere else of every spirit. There are also lots of liqueurs along with cool bartending tools, knick knacks, and gifts. You're not getting over charged like BevMo and other big name liquor stores. Also, the staff is extremely kind and helpful. I've been here for a wine tasting, which was fun & informative (you get a discount on the wines tasted for the day if you wish to purchase a bottle), and I frequent the store any time I need to restock the home bar or find a rare bottle. Being a visitor in the OC, I don't claim to be a know-it-all, but I have to say, this place is pretty amazing! It's much larger than I thought at first glance from the exterior or they have maximized their spacing to store as much wine as possible. SoCal's premier bodega. It's the closest to an alcohol lover's equivalent of "being a kid in a candy store". It has been family owned and operated for at least 60+ years and at least three generations of family members are in charge of various parts of the store. If you're walking into the store blindly or without a clear objective in mind, the experience can be a bit overwhelming. While the store's focus is on wine, they also sell a huge selection of beer, spirits, mixers, accessories, bar food, gourmet chocolates and even cigars (smoke shack). There's organization even for these separate categories but the sheer amount of their inventory makes it easy just to get lost and geek out over their stock. Even better when they claim to stock rare bottles... I heard about this store as my WSET L3 professor (MS Peter Neptune) keeps on singing praises about this place and quite a few of his former students work at this store. For me this adds to the charm because I'm all about the educational aspect of an alcohol tasting, especially the wines. For one particular visit I asked an employee (Dan?) about my situation: what wines can I get from the Old World that are textbook examples of a certain region for the WSET L3 tasting portion that doesn't break the bank? He was able to guide me through a few wines and tell me the characteristics of each producer. Also helped that he was a former student himself. I've cracked through two of the bottles so far... all are good wines in their own right. As for the wines, it is broken down into three sections: their value wines are scattered across "the ramp" (max price $20), wines from the Southern Hemisphere (South America/Australia) closer to the front of the store and their famous cellar, one of the largest in the US that stores wine from the Northern Hemisphere (Europe/US). The cellar is also subdivided into Europe and its regions in the front (with the major region/style given its own section with a placard including a small description, ie. St. Emilion [right bank Bordeaux], Barolo [Nebbiolo-only region in Piemonte]), with New World and its varietal-focused wines towards the back. It's so easy just to get overwhelmed and lost just in the cellar, but armed with WSET L3 education I think I can kinda make my way around the cellar for what I want and just confirm my pick with one of the staff members. From Thursday-Saturday they also just recently opened up their wine bar. On the days they're open they do wine tastings focusing on specific regions, styles or famous importers. This is different from other wine tastings featuring a specific producer as those can get repetitive really quickly. Despite being *far* from home, I think I found my go-to place to stock wine. I may just have to go here a few times a year and stock up then. read more

They also had all the ingredients necessary to make various cocktails like different types of bitters and syrups. They also have a pretty wide selection of wines and they do wine tastings in a separate area. I didn't check out the area where they kept their beers, but seems like they have a good variation of beers to from what I saw from a distance.
