    I got my 20th anniversary edition Volkswagen GTI (2003) on new years day in 2006. I've had this car…read moremy entire adult life and have always been obsessed with it's color (they only made 1,000 in this Jazz Blue color). I wanted to do something to commemorate our upcoming 20th anniversary together so I decided to get a complete paint restoration (the body was faring very well for being a 22 year old car, but the clearcoat started peeling in the Grass Valley sun when I moved here a few years ago). I'd been looking around at different shops for a while, most of whom had this grave tone in their voices when they told me I might as well buy a new car if I wanted a paint job (um, what?). Until I went to Spotless Auto Detailing where the owner Brian Scott recommended I take it to Tomcat Collision. From the beginning, Bill and his team at Tomcat made every move to accomodate my requests and vision for my car. When a small thing didn't turn out as expected, they went above and beyond to re-do it and even offered a discount (which I didn't accept, and instead paid in full because this team is amazing and deserves to be paid for their work!). The lead technician Onica was especially helpful, and huge shoutout for being such a badass! The final result literally took my breath away. I felt like I was 19 again seeing my car at the lot for the first time. So if you see me and my GTI around town, know that Tomcat Collision did that!

Day 1, Saturday, of a four week road trip, we drove from SoCal to Pleasanton, CA and heard a clicking sound coming from the rear end once we were off the freeway and could hear again. Since we were picking up our caravan partner and heading north, we needed to find a mechanic in NorCal, along our route and nearby. We used the VanAlert app (must have!) and found Westy World in Chico. I called the number (Saturday, remember?) to leave a hopeful message that they may be able to squeeze us in on Monday for a look-see. I couldn't leave a message because Brian answered! As we discussed the issue, Brian offered to stop-by Pleasanton on SUNDAY, after a nearby Van drop-off. We met at a roadside parking lot and Brian crawled under the van to find and definitively diagnose a broken axel. If this was the end of the story, I am sure you would agree that this is a once in a lifetime automotive and humanitarian experience. It has had such a profound impact on us that we use it as the measure of the Golden Rule - we try to treat others the way Brian treated us. But the story goes on. From the parking lot Brian rallied his team back in Chico to set up an appointment on Monday to repair our axel. We are pretty sure that Westy World was not keeping a time slot open for that Monday to address our emergency. So all the other projects must have been put on hold to make our emergency their emergency. As we agreed in the parking lot on Sunday, we covered the time and expense for Kyle to DRIVE FROM CHICO TO REDDING AND BACK on Monday morning to pick up the replacement axel. When we rolled into Chico Kyle jacked up our '87 GL and completed the repair before we could finish out lunch. Everyone was mellow, untroubled, kind and very knowledgeable. What a great mindset to calm us in our moment of flexing. After our trip we checked in with our local mechanic, who verified two things: the parts used (from Burley Motosports) were the best available, and Westy World charged us as though this was a regularly scheduled appointment - no emergency premium! It is an honor to have had this experience and to have Kyle and Brian in our world. Thank you both and everyone else at Westy World that was affected by our incursion.

Though it never came to fruition as someone wanted to buy it from me, I wish now I had not sold it.I wanted so bad to make a custom designed Van Life vehicle. But, guess it wasn't to be. But I have another project that needs a mechanic like Brian. Reviews are top notch, so here we go...
