*** Long post, PLEASE read if you are thinking of going to hi kitty kitty **** while i was hopeful that i would have a positive experience with hi kitty kitty, it's safe to say that jasmine has tainted this entire experience any chance she could get. i was in the market for hypoallergenic cats, and i wanted to rescue as i cant afford a breeder cat right now. the other shelters i checked out were overrun with people looking to adopt because of the holidays, and i was excited to hear that hi kitty kitty had many options for hypoallergenic cats on their website. my partner and i went there to visit on Jan. 30th and met multiple hypoallergenic cats. we went in originally looking for one adult hypoallergenic cat, but she told us that we have to have two. she then let us know that she had two pure bred russian blue male kittens up for adoption (later went to the vet and found out both kittens were actually female...) , while giving us a sad back story. hindsight looking back on it she saw two young first time adopter's and saw the opportunity to play on our innocence. we met them and instantly fell in love not only with the babies but with their mother as well. after spending some time with the family, my partner and i agreed to adopt the kittens, and made a verbal agreement to foster mom for 3 weeks. my best friend was in the market for a female adult cat, so i told her to come to the home inspection. over the next several days, jasmine texted us demanding we spend over $550+ in unnecessary supplies. she was adamant on certain brands of things, and often demanded the most expensive version of everything she requested. fast forward to Jan 5th, when Jasmine came over with the kittens and the mom for the home inspection. she walked in and immediately chastised me for my poinsettia plant that was sitting in my living room, when i have a room dedicated to the kittens. she then proceeded to inspect the home, not before stating "i f*cking hate black people" when referencing another customer. while she was there with the cats, she grabbed the mother out of the tree to try to cut her nails. the cat was clearly distressed about being in a new environment and i couldn't fathom why she didn't either let it go, or do it at the shelter before bringing her. Causing me to step in and stop her from traumatizing the cat further. after a few hours, jasmine left. We never received financial compensation for the 3 week verbal agreement nor have we received compensation for the additional 3 weeks of fostering. when my friend had to back out of adopting the mother, i contacted jasmine immediately to formally adopt the mother. after over a week with no response, my partner and i were at a loss. she needed to go to the vet and we couldn't wait any longer. we ended up having to declare her a dumped animal. After Hope received treatment for her upper respiratory infection, that she got from jasmine's unkept shelter, my partner and I decided that it would be in the cat's and our best interest to cut all ties with jasmine. As it stand's, I sent jasmine a text message on Feb 21st stating that we declared her as a dumped animal, that we never received any financial support for 6+ weeks of fostering and from that point forward we were going no contact. We received no response to that text (see image to read text). Fast forward to today ,March 13th, my best friend received a slew of texts and calls, begging her to pass on information and to get me to reach out and contact her. My friend saw how crazy jasmine was and BACKED OUT of the adoption because of jasmines antics, so there is no reason for her to bombard my friend with demands to get into contact with me. With the money i spent (granted i wouldn't have been able to get two kittens and an adult cat) I could've gotten a purebred AKC for equal or less money and definitely less stress. I beg you, if you are on the market for a specialty breed cat DO NOT go to hi kitty kitty. Jasmine is a con artist, she will prey on your kind nature and string you along for money. If you are not on the market for a specialty breed cat i still wouldn't go to hi kitty kitty, she only has her own best interest at heart. All to say, Jasmine IS as bad as she is portrayed in the reviews, DON'T put yourself through this. While my partner and I love our cats jasmine made an experience that should be happy and exciting, stressful emotionally and financially. (Below you are gonna find screenshots of the text I sent referenced in the review)

    Sick cat

The owner, Jasmine, is neglecting the cats. The cats are living in horrendous conditions and dozens upon dozens of them needed medical attention immediately. The "shelter" is located in a basement and the basement reeks of urine and feces. Multiple cats were covered in feces and it was clear that some of the cats were feral. Dozens of cats were extremely matted and should be sent to a groomer but Jasmine believes she can take it into her own hands. I saw her brushing one cat and it was so hard to watch the cat meowing in pain. She claimed a "nurse" was coming in to handle the mats and I doubt that is true. Which brings me to my next point. Jasmine told visitors that a nurse checks on the cats which is odd because shelters are partnered with veterinarians. It's clear that these sick cats haven't seen in a vet in years or frankly, some probably have never seen one at all. While I was checking out the cats, Jasmine ordered alcohol which again, is extremely weird. She claims that the cats need a "buddy" so basically, you must adopted two.. that is, if she even adopts the cats out. She has cats that have resided in the "shelter" for years and multiple visitors have expressed interest in those cats. She claims it's because "everyone is unemployed or broke." That is a ridiculous statement and an excuse to hoard the cats. During the application process, she informed me that an "executive board" will review the application and in a few days, the applicant will know if they are approved. Who is this "executive board?" I've worked with 5 shelters and none of them had an "executive board." This is suspicious and I wonder if something happening behind the scenes. The "shelter" has been investigated by the alderman but shutting down a "shelter" comes with a lot of obstacles. Hopefully, she's investigated by the state. She lies about the breeds. She told me one cat was XYZ breed but her website stated otherwise. If you're going to lie, at least be consistent. The adoption fee is outrageous (~$400). She claims the fees range from $100-$400 but that's a lie. Furthermore, Hi Kitty Kitty is federally registered as a 501(c) (non-profit) but the state registered the "shelter" as a not-for-profit. Big difference. Finally, if you want to take action. Go to the open house held every Saturday. Take as many photos as possible and send it to the Alderman (Maria Hadden; (773-338-5796), City of Chicago and the IL. Department of Agriculture. These cats need to be saved and with evidence, the government will have more ability to take action. Side note about the cat with long fur. It looks like the cat received some help but the cat shouldn't be around other cats as the bacterial/viruses in the shelter can cause infection. Also, the cat should be wearing a cone.

Adam just a few minutes after arriving at his new forever home!

I'm glad I didn't read the many misguided 1 Star reviews before going in, or else I may have never found our new sweet baby Adam! Yes, this shelter is for people who are very serious about adopting a cat. If you're expecting to walk in and leave 20 minutes later with a new cat, this isn't the place for you. Jasmine clearly loves all the cats very much, and wants what's best for them. Cats roam free in the shelter with lots of nooks and crannies to hang out in. Although some reviews made it sound like the shelter was extremely dirty, that was not my experience at all. Obviously when you have 30+ cats in one place, it will smell like cats. But there were many litter boxes, all of which were clean. Jasmine and her volunteers give all the cats lots of treats and special attention. She even told me that once a week they treat them all to some rotisserie chicken- so cute. We met our baby in the "shy room"- the back room where the more shy cats all hang out. He definitely chose us! Jasmine told us that he had been in the shelter for his whole life (5 years) and had no adoption inquiries. We applied to adopt him and were approved a few days later. That week, Jasmine called to ask some follow up questions and sent me a list of specific food, treats and toys to buy Adam. We were happy to spend some extra money to make sure that he would be comfortable and happy at his new home. One week after we went to the shelter, Jasmine came to our house to drop Adam off. She spent some extra time giving him lots of love and helping him relax. He's such a sweet boy and already loving his new mom and dad. Give this shelter a chance. It sounds like a lot of the negative reviews are from people who were disappointed to be rejected during the application process. I believe that Jasmine is just very selective because she wants to make sure the cats go to a home that's better than where they already are- a very nice shelter where all the cats are definitely loved and spoiled. If we ever choose to adopt another cat we will definitely be back.

Never even responded to my email about adopting a cat. No info on the cat, no info on how to adopt, nothing. Very disappointing.

Considering that they got over 6 million dollars from the City of Evanston, I am very unhappy with their poor communications and the fact that they are only open to the public for about 2 hours a day. One of the two cats I adopted turned out to have obstructive airway disease and since they were in charge of my two cats for months, one would have thought that would have been disclosed. The medication cost over $2,000 that first year because what was prescribed was not off patent and the cat was too obese to take prednisolone safely. Why was my cat obese? Ask them. Further when I asked if I could donate the huge cat carriers back to them and some food bowls they gave me (since I already had those items) they refused them as if they have all the money in the world to buy new supplies, other shelters would have jumped at the opportunity, a donation in kind of about $100. I applied to volunteer and heard nothing from them for over 2 months after emailing and messaging them following up on my status, to no avail, until I had to actually go in there to find out what was happening. I could go on but in my opinion this is an organization that is not managed well and they could do much more with the funds that they have been given. I'm pretty sure, imho, that they will ask some pals or cronies to add some high star reviews to try to balance out the negative ones, of which there are quite a few, but all I can do is try to get them to get their act together there by posting this. Finally, as to others here saying that some people there are rude, I completely agree. It is not a pleasant experience. If they try to get more taxpayer funding without improvement of their management, I intend to go down to City Hall to cite my many reservations about this organization. Update on 2/18/25: I stand by my review in spite of the response from EAS: To EAS I respond as follows: Unfortunately the cats were obese from a medical standpoint so you may want to consult with a veterinarian on animal obesity. I note that you did not post the photo of one of them I emailed to you after he had some cat nip the first night I got them, but chose the "skinny" video :) so I posted my photo of one of the big boys I adopted. Further, it is my understanding that my cats were elsewhere in foster care under your auspices until they were put into my care as fosters. If you take no responsibility for their care when at foster locations, that could be problematic, especially for them, since you foster out many animals. As to communications issues: I sent an email Sept 8, 2021 asking about a vet. No response to that. I found a vet myself and did not contact you again until early Dec this year when I put in a volunteer application. No response to that. On Jan 7, I sent a followup email asking the status. No response to that. After that I wrote a msg to your Facebook page. A day or two later someone answered and said she would follow up with the dog volunteer area. I waited approximately a week and still had no answer. I wrote again to see if anyone heard from the dog volunteer group, but received no reply. Growing quite annoyed with the runaround, a few days ago I decided to walk over to EAS and find out what was going on, which I did. I told The person there, also the person who did not answer my email of Sept 8, 2021 that I had emailed and messaged and gotten no reply so decided to walk in. He told me I must be mistaken as EAS has no email address posted on its website and was rather brusque (rude, in my perception in addition to being uninformed) gave me no apology and then insisted I must have emailed a vet with a similar practice name to EAS. He subsequently agreed to follow up, nevertheless. Moreover, with regard to my claim of poor communication, there was a post on your facebook page not long ago telling the public that people have been rude to EAS staff/volunteers when they don't get back to them and how they shouldn't be because everyone is so busy( too busy to hire volunteers who might answer phones, I guess.) If EAS cannot acknowledge the problem, it certainly will not be fixed. Re: funding: So it didn't go into your pocket, you say, but why spend 6 million dollars so you can be open approximately 2 hours a day to the public? I certainly hope the number of adoptions skyrocket going forward , you train people not to be rude (as mentioned here and elsewhere in reviews) and you answer communications because certainly the Evanston taxpayers should see something for their generous funding of your large facility.

They take in animals that need a lot of vet care and make sure they get it and are healed. I've always seen great care and cleanliness at Red Door. I've adopted "many" rabbits and had a dumped cat under my deck that needed to go somewhere and they took him. This place is totally amazing! I've always been treated with the utmost kindness. I've seen them treat everyone like this. Thank you Red Door for your persistent dedication to saving animals! I've seen guinea pigs, ducks and dogs that go into foster homes. Hand punch and chest thump to YOU!!

My experience here was as a volunteer. Every time I came in to help, I was made to do common room…read more(the main rabbit and cat room). It was always filthy, many of the fleeces were covered in so much fur that I was worried about the rabbits getting a blockage, water bowls were often fully empty or had literal soap suds in them. The volunteer coordinator suggests you "spot clean" the litter boxes, though often they are so saturated that the pellets they use as litter are disintegrated. It put a bad taste in my mouth that staff was not following the basic "contact time" instructions on the bottles of Rescue when they claimed they wanted to kill bacteria. They kept a sick cat with giardia in a cage first thing when you walked in. He had a sign that said not to touch him, but not what he had. I saw senior staff repeatedly handle iso animals with no gloves. I saw them put iso laundry right into a pile with the other laundry more than once. I found a wet pile of laundry with feces (or litter, according to the literal president -- not sure that's better) stuck to it sitting on top of the dryer. I was written up for making staff "feel bad" about not knowing how to disinfect stuff when they claim to have vet tech experience, and for not being nice enough about the "litter" on the wet pile of laundry. I saw other volunteers regularly mix in BnB laundry with shelter laundry -- with what I would consider a homeopathic amount of bleach. They were not chastised for doing laundry incorrectly. In fact, they were allowed to train me on laundry. I tried to report a possible historical ringworm infection to the staff just so they knew to be mindful to check themselves and animals for sores, but instead got met with bizarre legalistic stuff about how I might as well be suggesting that I could have gotten it from "invisible space aliens" (that's from the president directly). Look at these photos and tell me if you think it's insane to think someone could catch a fungal infection here. I was then banned -- again, the stated, written reason being that I disagree with their veterinary practices and they've been doing this for 26 years blah blah blah. Ok. I'm really worried about how much else has been swept under the rug in 26 years, then. The president was so cruel to me when banning me that I immediately went to urgent care for medical clearance. The NP was grossed out and suspicious when I told him I got yelled at for trying to let them know about a possible exposure. Staff here does nothing but bully people if they trust you enough to let their true colors show. I have personally heard them do it about sexual orientation, weight, and ethnicity -- they even had rabbits with antisemitic names they got from Seinfeld (they are not Jewish themselves). They stood silently by while a senior volunteer made fun of my sexual orientation the first time I met her, even. They do not have a pride flag hanging anywhere. I wish they would change that, because maybe there would be fewer homophobic and transphobic comments. Though everyone here reflexively "punches down" so much due to their low self esteem that it seems they can't even keep track of what they say. Just know that if you have a certain skin tone, everyone here older than 40 with a sensible haircut has an opinion about your hair being "unprofessional" if you do anything but make it as straight as possible. I grew up in a hoarded house, and I have to be honest. That's what this shelter feels like and part of why I wanted to help. They cannot keep up with the animals at all, especially not while running HareBnB. Over the holidays, for maybe 3 full cumulative weeks of the year, volunteers handle everything in the shelter except paperwork and isos. No one is properly trained -- in fact, I trained several people after doing common room only ONE time. But these photos were taken when BnB wasn't busy. This is what their performance looked like when they had one more staff member than they do currently and very few BnB guests. And I heard the president and VP talk about buying more BnB space as a potential for the future! I don't have a rabbit currently, but if I did, I would not trust BnB. I am telling everyone I know with rabbits not to board at BnB. For a while, they were the only game in town, but now you can do better. I had already stopped finding joy in volunteering, because as soon as I would come in, the volunteer coordinator would sit at a computer and pretend to look at spreadsheets. That would devolve into hours of me hearing her talking and laughing while I did what would've been her assigned work. No thanks. As you can see, there's clearly enough to be done that we both needed to be working at the same time. I would love to see them change ownership and find a crew really dedicated to the mission instead of dedicated to doing a bit less than the bare minimum. It seems like this shelter used to be good, but maybe it was just the quirkiness of a bunny shelter.

When I arrived at the cafe at the scheduled time, the young lady at the cafe informed me there was only one cat in the cafe area but offered me to see some more cats upstairs. Honestly, that was a great trade-off even though she kept apologizing to me for the inconvenience. I was able to enjoy my iced chai and visited some kittens and adult cats in different colonies. Often shelter cats are underweight and saddled with at least one type of parasite, despite the shelter's best efforts.
