Time for an update on the water heater.
Dr. Trent N.

We we looking for new water heater to be put in and we used Yelp to create a project. We had several different companies recommended to us and this was one of those. The Good: Everyone that I dealt was very friendly and helpful. The two gentlemen I met with to create a bid on the project we friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. I was under the impression from the start that they really wanted to help. When I suggested perhaps wanting to change over to a tankless system they shared with the the pros and the cons of that option for may particular situation. Perhaps best of all they pointed out any potential pitfalls of my current system and how those could be worked around. After a careful review of the property, they provided me with a very septic estimate of the costs of the job. All-in-all a good first impression. The Bad Unlike most other places that I have talked to, they charge an $89 service fee just to tell you how much their services are going to cost. In their defense, they did tell me this in advance so I wasn't caught off guard. What did surprise me a little was that I was going to get charged that service fee regardless of whether or not I used their services. In every other circumstance where I have encountered something like this that bill was just waived if you let them do a service that costs thousands of dollars. Once the job was done we went over the bid. While some people might consider upselling a good thing, that's where I started loosing interest. The price went from nearly 4k to 5k to 6k with all the varied extras they suggested. Now based on the research I did replacing a 50 gal water heater should cost between $700 and $3,100 dollars with the average person spend right around $2,250. With a tank and parts running between $800-1,100 those later numbers make sense for a job that takes a single person a few hours. That left their lowest bare-bones bid still about 30 percent higher that the national average maximum. Way too high. The Decision We went with a local general contractor that we have used before for right around $2,500 (near the national average) using the same kind of tank in the same time frame, with the job schedules only a couple weeks out: no rush because it was just an update not a repair. While $1,500 doesn't sound like a lot to some people, it sounds like nearly a whole paycheck to this everyday working Joe.

I had High Desert Plumbing install a water softener and a new water heater. I highly recommend this company. Their team is professional and a friendly!

Replaced the entire gas line starting at the meter.

Everything was under the ground, and there was no blueprint to where anything was. They had to dig deep under the ground to find out how my pipes were laid some 60+ years ago! They fixed it all with a smile and as I recall they did it all for a reasonable price. Last Friday I got home only to find my water wasn't working. I called Mahany. It was about 415 on a Friday so soon everyone would be out for the night and also the weekend. I was panicking. Their employee Luis came out and searched and searched for the source of the problem. It was hot. We were both tired and again he was cheerful and professional, and kept telling me, it will get figured it out. I was lucky that he was at my house 4 years ago so he had a bit of a lead on where things were. He called in his coworker Jason and between them they finally figured it out. It was a complicated problem that was not easy to find and these two gentlemen figured it out and my water was back on! Thank you both for helping me at the last minute. I'm so grateful!

Thankfully we found Marcos and A-Team Drains instead. Of the four companies that came out to give an estimate, Marcos is the only one who didn't charge us for the inspection needed to give a thorough estimate. He and Sylvia in the office helped us dial in the estimate until when it was time to pull the trigger on a contractor, A-Team Drains was the only possible choice. They made the decision that easy. Being it was a timely repair, they were able to get us on the schedule within a week and communicated clearly and efficiently throughout the process. On the day of the work, Marcos and his employee explained everything in detail about what to expect, the scope of the job and what they had to do. They were both meticulous in preparing the area for digging up the sewer line, working with the company that installed the liner, and buttoning up the work when everything was completed. Invoicing and documentation was extremely thorough and Sylvia readily answered the billion questions I had for her. Dealing with contractors can be a crapshoot sometimes, but I would not hesitate to recommend Marcos and A-Team Drains. They took the sting out of a necessary, yet painful, repair.

I only bought the Ecowater system because they were featured at Costco. I usually trust Costco, but I think Costco made a big mistake allowing Ecowater to advertise to its members. My Ecowater system only last 4 years and the replacement filters are super expensive. They will charge you $150 minimum to just come out to the house. I finally had enough with Ecowater when my system broke down. I called a friend who gave me the number to her water system guy. I called him up and he came over and told me that the system Ecowater installed was way too small for a house with 6 people. So, the new Water system has a larger capacity, it has a metal housing, the installation was more professional (copper pipes and the waste water pipes were installed along the house (not just running along the dirt ground like Ecowater did).... Totally different! AND it was much less expensive! About the amount that Ecowater wanted to just "FIX" my crummy, small, plastic, sloppy installed piece of junk! And... if that not enough... my new guy will come out to the house and change ALL the filters (every other year) for less than Ecowater will charge to just come out to the house and do NOTHING! Live and learn! Not everything at Costco is to be trusted!
