Hewitt's had me at "family owned." I have a soft spot for local businesses, so they get a bonus point from the get-go. Then, several visits and purchases over the years make me feel comfortable and excited enough to revisit, mostly this location. The most recent visit was no exception. Colourful annuals fit for the spring were aplenty both in the front and the back of the store, and we found plants here that we hadn't seen at any other major garden centre in the Capital Region so far. Maiden grass was the awesome find on the most recent visit, and the staff at checkout answered our questions about plant care which was very helpful. The prices appear to be competitive, as we found both lower, equivalent, and higher prices compared to several garden centres in the area. Parking here has not been an issue and they have their own parking lot, and we appreciated they were open till 7pm when some other stores were closed. $14.00 for small containers of dill and oregano? I know things are expensive these days but Gades would have sold it to me for $8.00 if they did not sell out. I'm staying at Gades. Like today I'll go only in a gardening emergency. Start from seed save money. Buy seeds on-line. This whole Family owned thing does not mean that one Family cannot over charge another family. It only six bucks but sometimes people take advantage of others. read more

A lawn and garden center should have good curb appeal to make a first impression, right? Among the Hewitt's I have visited or driven by, this one does have good curb appeal, at least from driving by on Western Avenue. I wish their parking lot had more appeal though, it's badly in need of re-paving. Once you're actually inside, you'll find there's a lot more to check out than you can see from Western Avenue as well. Visiting at the end of the season is a bit of a 2-edged sword. They're out of a lot of things right now as they stock up for fall and Christmas promotions. But at the same time, you can get some really good deals on close-out items, as I did this time. This store is well staffed and everyone there was friendly and helpful. I'm looking forward to coming back here as their seasonal inventories change. read more

Based on recommendations from a coworker, we came here recently looking for some Apple trees to plant in our backyard. It has been on our "dream home bucket list" for a while now. There are several places that offer trees for sale, including orchards, but some issues have come up that have made purchase difficult. The virus is one, and our small Toyota cars is another. We needed a place that offered delivery. It is hard to judge the hours of this store as most places are cut them down, and we rushed here after work one weeknight to look around. It was dark and gloomy and threatened to rain, so we didn't dilly dally outside. However, we found about a half-dozen varieties of apple trees for sale, as well as some nice pear trees and crabapple trees. There were two sizes available with prices of $30 for the smaller ones and $100 for the larger ones. We went with 2 larger trees to make up for lost time, but they didn't try and up-sell us on them. In fact, I felt pushy just asking for them. Delivery isn't officially available, but we made "arrangements" to have it done and after a couple of days we now have two apple trees in our backyard. We didn't walk through their flower section, but since I can barely identify flowers anyway I doubt I could shed much insight on how great a nursery they are. But, I can say that our trees look lovely. How do you like them apples? read more

Really bummed. Went there this am (Wed. before Mother's Day at 11 am) to pick up geraniums as I have for several years. Geranium isle, and one next to it, were blocked with carts. Decided to go around and got to the end of an adjacent isle and it was blocked with a cart. Before giving up totally, went to buy plant pot plastic trays and found they need restocking. Adequate. I went here in search of various perennials that I couldn't find in Glenmont, and while there was more choice, I was less than wowed. The fellow in the tree nursery knew less about Japanese maples than I do and kept pointing to bronze palmatum and Japanoica maples when I asked if they had anything besides bronze Japanese maples. I gave up since he refused to listen. Another salesman seemed perplexed when I asked where the tea rose bushes were and then attempted to argue with me when I asked for Oriental lilies, indicating I was interested in Stargazers. He told me they had Asiatic lilies and pointed to the area where the Stargazers were located (the container specifically saying "oriental lily"). If you don't know something admit it instead of attempting to represent yourself as knowing more than the not challenging but inquiring customer. Shade perennials aren't kept in sufficient shade and are allowed to get burned; the layout isn't aesthetically pleasing. The interior is tired and cluttered looking. Albany MUST have a premier nursery because this is at best grade C . It appears that the majority of their business is based on pedestrian annuals. read more

I know it's early to be buying plants but with Mother's Day coming, you would think they would have nice looking plant hangers. The customer service is really bad. With all the rules standing in line you would they would have more then one register open! I count 8 people standing and waiting. read more

I never had the pleasure of working with 'Debbie' but I have worked at the Guilderland Hewitts for 8 years, and with Hewitts as a company for 21. I have enjoyed every minute of my time working there. Garrett especially has always been a caring and compassionate supervisor, very accommodating to a mom with another full-time job and three kids. Logan is always courteous and willing to jump into help whenever needed, I think calling him a 'loser' on Yelp is extremely unfair and inappropriate. The crew that works at the Guilderland location is drama free and there are never ANY employee relations issues. It is unfortunate that Debbie disliked her employment at Hewitts because it truly is a great place to work. read more

It all started when I clipped a Hewitt's coupon for 10% off any item. I decided to stop by to check out their selection of Christmas trees, as trees aren't cheap and a coupon would certainly soften the blow of the bill. I wasn't too impressed by their selection, however. I admit I may have gone too early, as none of the trees had had enough time to relax. I couldn't get a proper idea of how any of them looked, how full they were, etc. The prices were all the same regardless of shape/fullness, though they were running a $10 discount if you spent a certain amount. We ended up buying a tree elsewhere, but I might possibly return for other holiday items. I still have that coupon after all! read more
