Came here on a lazy Sunday to do some work in their lobby/lounge area. Parking in the area is a little difficult so I would plan ahead for this but there is metered street parking. The hotel itself is gives off some classic Victorian-era vibes with high ceilings, fine-detailing, and velvety furniture. There is also a large table that is perfect for meetings or a nice little study group. I love that even though the restaurant is in a separate area, they will still serve you in the lounge area. I ordered both a Bloody Mary and a tea which were well prepared and beautifully presented. Of course, the absolute best thing is that they allow dogs in their lobby as well so Kobi can come hang out with us while we our enjoy our drinks :) Still need to try their food...brunch looks amazing so will be coming back to check it out! read more

The Hewing Hotel in the burgeoning North Loop neighborhood is no exception. Built from a converted warehouse, its airy open floor plan, exposed pipes, and unfinished floors provide a canvas to create an understated elegance décor that makes this hotel memorable. An ode to the Nordic culture is evident in the furniture and art. The ubiquitous influence of the 'Up North' vibe presents itself through rustic, uniquely Minnesotan furnishings--sepia leather chairs with flannel accent pillows, golden tree trunks as end tables, gold framed fireplace, brick walls, deer printed wallpaper, and a framed ax. There's a pop of modern art. A nod to Prince via enormous, stunning purple raindrops greets patrons as the elevators open to the hotel rooms. Dogs are welcome at the hotel for a fee of $75.00. Dog friendly and nice furniture, apparel, and kitchen boutiques are within a five minute walk from the hotel. MartinPatrick3 a local men's clothing/furnishings store nearby on 3rd Ave. was superb in selection and service. Saturday night, the hotel was bursting with energy. By 10:30 PM, the line was out the door. Ignore that the current, hippest joint in the North Loop faces Déjà Vu, a local men's entertainment establishment. The Hewing Hotel lobby is a great place to grab a cocktail. There are plenty of comfortable seating areas by the bar, fireplace, and pool table. The rooftop pool will attract many when it opens. Tullibee, the hotel's restaurant headed by Grae Nonas, winner of Food & Wine's Best New Chef 2015 and Eater Chef of the Year Austin 2016 was completely booked over a week in advance. Ordered drinks and "Snacky Pickles" in the lobby bar to sample the cuisine. The pickled dish was small and needed an accompaniment. I'm still waiting for the fried cauliflower that never arrived. Tullibee was slow for brunch. The presentation of the Hewing Breakfast was enticing and was a good and hearty choice. The breakfast potato flatbread with soft scrambled eggs and smoked salmon was ok. I'd skip the cinnamon roll if you envision a gooey mound of sweetness. Despite the kinks that one would expect with a newly opened establishment, I wanted to give this place four stars because everyone was friendly when I was there. I left and found out I was double charged for room service. It was an ordeal for the staff to fix the issue. Three days, two impolite employees, and multiple phone calls to remedy the issue. It shouldn't be that difficult to correct an error that the hotel made. Not my fault that I was charged twice for room service. Days later, an employee called to apologize about the mishap. Bottom line: Check out the new Hewing Hotel in the North Loop to appreciate the lovely design and energy. Good location with proximity to local shops, restaurants, and bars. read more

Had a fabulous stay with a few local and out of town girlfriends for our annual holiday get together. The hotel is beautifully decorated, clean and cozy. Bar scene is busy, even into the evening on weekdays. We loved our room, the service and overall experience at the hewing. Standouts were Thom + Josh at the front desk and Zach in the bar. All of their personal touches took this from a 4 to 5 star review. Definitely will be back to stay for a family wedding this summer but hopefully before! read more

The hotel was nice we got a room with a king size bed and well the mini bar was well stocked .. The room was extremely clean. The bed was supper soft and felt like I was sitting on clouds. The only complaint I have was the exotic view of the brick wall that my room had. The axe in the bathroom was awesome lol. The hallways outside the room had a burning wood smell. We went up to the rooftop deck for drinks and woe what a view. The deck is currently open to hotel guests only. They also had a large heated hot tub.. well it was a pool. And a sauna. Great place to grab a bite to eat and take a date or have a girls night! We went to the rooftop which is open to anyone with a good view in the winter (it's enclosed). The seating layout is cute with lounge chairs, couches and a bar. I got a Cabernet Sauvignon that was light bodied and smooth- I got three glasses so I really enjoyed it! Friends got the cocktails and I'm general they were on the sweeter side so they switched to beer after one. We also ordered a cheese board which included crackers, jelly, berries, Gouda, cheddar, Brie and bleu cheese. Great pairing of flavors. I was extremely impressed with the customer service because we did find a hair in the blue cheese (even though it was a girls night we know it wasn't ours because it was long and blonde and our only blonde friend had short hair...) and we reported it to our server and just asked for some new blue cheese. He brought us a small plate with new blue cheese, Gouda and a few more crackers. We were satisfied with that replacement but only to find out that he had taken the cheese board completely off our bill!! That was above and beyond our expectations. OMG OMG, please get yourself to the rooftop sauna & spa pool! If you're a guest, definitely take advantage of this ultimate-relaxation amenity. Even if you're not staying at the Hewing Hotel, you can purchase an affordable day pass and stick around until 11 PM. We went on a recent SNOWY spring day and were basically in heaven as we steamed up in the sauna and then went into the frosty outdoor area, then warmed up again by dipping into the spa pool. Nicely appointed locker rooms, restrooms, plenty of towels, and hip 6th-floor bar area (complete with Bittercube bitters and a highball machine) - basically, we didn't want to leave this little slice of northern paradise! Warning: the cocktails are pricey at $14ish but they're also very delicious! read more

I stopped into the much talked about Hewing Hotel for a happy hour beverage on a Friday afternoon. The vibe almost feels like a trendy-hipster-I'm spending more money on cocktails and apps than I have, but that's ok-type of vibe. The inside seating is comprised mostly of couches, so while it seems like it should be comfy, it's more awkward. The patio is tiny with a few longer high tops that you have to share with strangers. The cups were plastic and dirty looking. The view, however, was fantastic and the service was good. Our server was amiable and attentive. Overall, I didn't think it was terrible, and I don't regret having stopped by, but certainly didn't live up to the hype and with so many cool places to visit in the Twin Cities, I don't know if this one warrants another visit. read more

I just had my first stay at the Hewing and it did not disappoint. I loved the vibe and hipness of the hotel from the loungey lobby to the rooftop bar and pool there is something for everyone. They have dog food in the lobby, pet fridley of course. their rooftop bar is now open to the public starting at 11am. if you wanna user their rooftop pool it's $30 for the day. great neighborhood so many cute shops near by like martin patrick 3 - awesome men's store next door with a fantastic barber. Food on the roof bar is very minimal. If the manager sees this, please remove that watermelon salad off of your menu. It's too spicy and not refreshing for a rooftop. When you think watermelon feta salad you think crisp clean cool flavors, replace the spicy pepper with mint... i was sweating balls on a hot day on the roof with no shade. Drinks were done with care and expertise. Come on a cool night and stick to the cocktail menu. read more

I'm a huge fan of the hotel group that owns The Hewing. The Aparium Group has other unique properties in Detroit, Milwaukee and is opening in Chicago and Kansas City soon. Each hotel has its own unique name, inspired by the historical building they chose to rehab and develop. The Hewing name, I was told, came from the large hewn wood beams visible throughout. The building itself used to be used as a showroom for farm equipment. There was a train track that used to run behind the building where farm equipment manufacturers would deliver these huge pieces of equipment and roll them into the building. They'd be on display via the large picture windows in front. The decor of this and its sister properties is what really appeals to me. It's sort of a farmhouse style meets game room meets parlor.It's both masculine (lots of wood, metal, leather) and feminine (whimsical wallpaper, soft touches like upholstered furniture and cozy rugs and pillows). The rooms are wonderful. Comfy beds. Cozy touches like flannel blankets. Great showers. Custom furniture. The restaurant is also outstanding with a menu that was put together with a lot of care and attention to detail. I almost never eat elsewhere when I'm in for a visit. It's the best. And the wait staff and hotel staff are friendly. And I recognize people when I visit which tells me there's not a lot of turn over. I love this hotel so much (and their hotel in Detroit) that I only stay there now. I actually forgo my SPG points to stay here. read more

What a great boutique hotel using all the right bones and character that the former warehouse building provided, to create a one of a kind experience in downtown Minneapolis. The location - RAD! The hot North Loop offers the old classics (JD Hoyt's, Monte Carlo, Bunker's) blended with new hot retail stores, coffee shops, and condos. The people - trendy. It was a much cooler, thinner, well-dressed crowd than I generally see when visiting Minneapolis. The design - warm, interesting, spacious. The layout was very inviting, displaying the original beautiful wood and brick throughout the bar, restaurant, conference space and guest rooms. No detail was left untouched, from the modern timber theme throughout to the mini-bar with only locally sourced food and beverage options. The rooms - cozy + contemporary. Hotel rooms seem to get smaller and more predictable with each passing year. This room wasn't either of those things. It was spacious with great modern touches, yet grounded in the roots of its Scandinavian history. An axe over the toilet, antlers on the desk, and northern woods themed wallpaper and blankets set the cozy theme. A spacious bathroom, a nice tile shower with ample room for products, outlets in all the right places, hangers and clean bars for clothes vs. large wood closets (aka sq. footage hogs) hit the contemporary mark. The pets - darling! This pet friendly hotel welcomes the pups with their names on a chalkboard sign, along with food and water near check-in. I had the pleasure of chatting with "Bacon", a bulldog hanging out in the lounge. It was the highlight of my morning. The staff - O.K. The only average part of my Hewing Hotel experience was the underwhelming attitude and assistance from the staff. Juggling business items while valet'ing...I received no offer to assist, and no smiles or "MN nice" from the valet guys. They were not overly friendly at check-in, and borderline pretentious when I asked to get to the bar at the top floor, which apparently costs an extra fee not build into our room block, hence my key not working. I won't let mediocre staff dampen my enjoyment of this really cool hotel. If they improve that, it should really have some legs. read more

Beauty surrounds you here. The Hewing Hotel offers 124 guest rooms and 14 suites. It's truly a unique Minneapolis experience for travelers and locals who appreciate luxurious accommodations and historic charm. Each room is unique and slightly different than the next. I had requested an early check in and when we arrived they informed us our room was ready. We stayed on the 3rd floor. I loved the decor and furnishings. The unfortunate piece was the large beam that was planted a few feet from the foot of our bed. Certainly something you needed to avoid any time you got in or out of bed. Our room faced the street side so consequently it was very noisy and difficult to sleep. In the future I'd ask for a room not facing Washington. I had a gift certificate so booked online on the Hewing website. About a week before we arrived they waived the rooftop fee ($25) as now the Rooftop Bar and Lounge is accessible to the public. The Rooftop Spa Pool and Sauna is only for guests of the hotel. The rooftop experience is a lovely spot but the pool area can easily feel crowded because it's a smaller space. Overall I love this place. The furnishings, the complimentary coffee in the morning, the location in the North Loop and the inviting bar on the main floor. There are so many wonderful spaces here. The Hewing Hotel has me all heart eyes emoji. We traveled to Minneapolis to visit Paisley Park over the Fourth of July weekend. After our jaunt to Chanhassen, we checked in at the Hewing. It's easily the most beautiful hotel I've ever visited. Booking our room was easy. I called before booking to confirm that my City of Charlotte employment was eligible for the government discount, and the gentleman on the phone was pleasant and helpful. A word to the wise: they'll put a big fat hold on your credit card upon checking in. Be prepared. The hotel is new and clean, with beautifully curated decor everywhere you look. While you wait for the elevator, look down and check out the chalkboard in the lobby, informing you of the names of the dogs who are currently in residence. Our room was perfect. The Itasca King boasts a plush and warm king-sized bed, a leather chair with ottoman, and a shelving unit with minibar and storage. I read some other reviews that didn't care for the "open closet" but I thought it was fine and made for a great use of space. The bathroom is stark and beautiful with black sink and shower hardware and cool stone floors. The rolling door doesn't offer exceptional restroom privacy, but it wasn't problematic. We visited the lobby restaurant, Tullibee, twice. Service was pleasant and the food was exceptional, if pricey. We were also able to get some great local recommendations from the serving staff, which was appreciated. In addition to the bar and restaurant downstairs, there's a sizable lobby with plush seating and more swoon-worthy design details. Past the front desk are the conference spaces and ballroom. We stumbled upon Hewing's rooftop the first night. I mention "stumbling" because apparently the rooftop bar and lounge area are available only to guests who pay an additional fee which allows your room key to "unlock" the rooftop button in the elevator. We happened to be in the right elevator at the right time and ended up at the well-appointed bar, enjoying the skyline view and the pool area. This would be my chief (and only) complaint about the Hewing; all guests should be permitted to enjoy the amenities. It seems silly to pay a "cover charge" to get into your own hotel. We so enjoyed our time at the Hewing that we're already planning a return trip to the Twin Cities just so we can stay again. Hewing Hotel has realigned my perceptions of Hotel luxury and interior design. It's an absolutely beautiful place. read more

Leather sofas, tables, and chairs created a variety of seating options. There's also a pool table if you're up for a game. We partook in various cocktails and martinis. I asked the waitress to surprise me with a spirit forward/ not too sweet drink and she got the job done! With the help of the bartender of course. Front desk staff not helpful. I arrived early for a reservation of a suite to be told by the front desk that it was not ready. Understandable, I was early. So, I took a walk and had lunch. No one at the front desk offered to call me when my room was ready. I arrived back and another person said my room was still not ready. Still no one took down a number or asked if for a means of getting ahold of me. I took a seat in the lobby full of chairs from the "uncomfortable chairs warehouse" watched no less than 10 other guest groups check in and get their rooms. My third trip to the from desk and third person to speak to said my room was stiiiiiiill not quite ready but, housekeeping was working on it. At this point, I introduced a new concept to the front desk staff at the Hewing - I offered my phone number and suggested perhaps they could let me know when (or if) my room was ready. More guests check in; I still wait. I don't know... maybe someone could call housekeeping and say "hey, we have a guest waiting for one of our most expensive rooms could you give that one a priority"? This place looks cool on the surface, but once you get beyond that it's not very good and certainly not worth the money. Like many boutique hotels, they are trying very hard to be trendy, and it looks good at first glance. I liked the decor. But they miss the stuff that really matters, such as good service. For example, we check into our room and there is one towel in the bathroom, and the desk is dirty. Next, my wife wants a dressing cocktail as we get ready to attend the event for which we are in town. I go to the rooftop bar which is supposed to be cool and no one is there. Now I'll admit it is 4:30pm so a little early. So I go down to the bar on the first floor and it is blocked off as the wait staff is getting briefed on the night ahead. So I go to the front desk and ask if I can get two gin and tonics, and I am rudely told I can go to the bar across the street! I'm serious. And it was done in a dismissive tone by a hipster who clearly thinks he is the cat's meow. Don't waste your money here unless your superficial and don't really care that much about good service and cleanliness. read more

A seductive, trendy, and beautiful spot to grab a happy hour drink or a post-dinner drink. My boyfriend and I were in town for a few days and the Hewing was around the corner from where we were staying - and we found ourselves twice enjoying a drink after dinner in the beautiful bar/lounge area. On our second visit, we were interested in trying something new, and our server, Jayme, was amazing and recommended a number of different Amari for us to try. Jayme was great - she was funny, personable, and took great care of us. It was her great attention to service and our tastes that really left an impact. The beautiful surroundings didn't hurt either, it was a great way to spend our last night in Minneapolis. If I ever come back (and have more $), I would love to stay at the Hewing, but for now, it was a great and hospitable after dinner bar :) read more

I finally understand why people say Minnesota nice. I came here 4th of July weekend to meet a girlfriend of mine who showed me around her hometown Cleveland, Minnesota, a town of just 700 people directly outside St. Paul. As we specifically planned to visit the George Floyd memorial we took the last Sunday to stay downtown and check out a much lauded hotel in the area. We were sad we couldn't get in the much revered hot tub, but this didn't dampen the mood. Since the reception knew I was a photographer, he allowed us access to the rooftop in the evening to get some brilliant shots of the full moon. One small hiccup we encountered was we were placed in a room that hadn't been revisited for a while so there was some wooden dust residue from the ceiling. We quickly alerted the reception and they moved us straight away. The hotel bolsters a lovely outdoorsy theme meets city with exposed beams, concrete and very tall ceilings. I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a very understated luxury feel in the mini apple read more

Date night approved. Work happy hour approved. Girl's night approved. So, I really, really love this spot. From the drinks (and awesome local beer selection), the service, the ambiance, and the location, you can't go wrong with Hewing. I've only been here for drinks (but several times) and each time the service is great, the drinks taste amazing, and the clientele has been appropriate. I like the rustic, chill but upscale vibe of Hewing. There are couches to chat on, a pool table to entertain you, and several tables as well as a bar for sitting. Both first dates that have been here have gone great. I blame it on the atmosphere and the good vibes. The best part of Hewing is that there isn't rifraff around like you get at other bars in the area. Note: I've never seen a fight or a ridiculous line to get into the bar as other bars across/down the street have. Bonus: they allow dogs :) It's reasonably priced I think and it's easy in and out of North Loop with being right on the edge of downtown. There is a patio upstairs set to open this summer, so that's exciting. I overall, just really think it's great spot that's unique enough to stick around town for a while. This spot was recommended to us for the vibe + view at The Rooftop, however it felt less atmospheric and more like a tired scene. We were told on entering that the Rooftop was at capacity and that we'd have to be wait, however they will not take your name - you have to continually check in with the service desk every 10-20 minutes to see if space is available. The desk staff seemed to care less, which was a bit off-putting. The bar was super busy and we waited for about 20 mins to be served which is understandable, but other folks who arrived after us were served first which was disappointing. The outdoor seating section was underwhelming and the other patrons were obnoxious and excessively drunk. Overall, there was an air of fake exclusivity, meh drinks, bad vibes, bad service. Avoid this spot - maybe guests of the hotel might have a better experience. What a bummer way to end our night. read more

Man. If the drinks weren't at least decent this place would be considered trash. The service is fine, servers and bartenders are doing what they can but the food is absolute garbage. The wings, the pretzel buns, the cheese curds, the 3 simplest meals were all horrible for our experience. We even sent the curds back because they were deep fried air curds and only got like 8 deep fried cheese curds in return, the rest still all air. For how expensive this place is it really is just over priced service is what you are paying for cuz the food and drinks are nothing.... NOTHING to brag about. Happy holidays, if you insist on coming here i suggest you get the fries lol. That it. Other things sound great but if you can't make bone in wings or CHEESE CURDS taste good then ya get the fries. My wife and I were attending an event at Modist Brewery and decided to make it an overnight trip. The Hewing was a new and unknown destination and as we were looking for something new, we decided to give it a shot. The building has been completely renovated and looks amazing. The staff conducted themselves very well and always went above and beyond. As a beer drinker, it was nice to see the taps dominated by local Brewers. Dinner was good (I had the duck and creamed spinach) but a little sparse. Don't walk in hungry. Ignoring my thoughts on dinner, I would really struggle to say anything negative about The Hewing. It didn't disappoint and is an easy recommendation. read more

I've been here many an evening both for meetings of Boy's Book Club and with friends (who are not members of Boy's Book Club). While I love the ambiance and the cocktails and the wine and the snacks, a couple of things are off. The first is the service. The table servers don't check back or when they walk by your table, they don't actually look to see if your drink is empty. Once a server walked away while my friend was still ordering. I do not understand...don't you want your customers to order drinks? Confusing at best. Another time a busker was in asking people if we wanted to hear his stupid beatbox routine, and he wasn't promptly removed. Come on, Hewing, this guy is basically panhandling your guests. Business trip was changed and, when I called more than a week in advance to cancel, they accepted the cancellations but said I owed then a nonrefundable fee for each of the the three nights . . . and that fee equaled the nightly rate. I would have been happy to pay some minor penalty (even though elite hotel operators would not even do that). But, NO. They were having nothing of it, even though I offered some amount to settle it. They charged me the FULL rate for all three nights . . . and even though I cancelled with ample notice. Total RIP OFF. Unsavory business practices. Not only took all of my money for the room but also then rented it to another patron. Do not trust these folks. They think they are an elite hotel when in fact they are con men. Not what you expect from the general honest folks in the midwest. No midwest values here. Sleazy. Stinks. read more

The hotel itself is in the Warehouse District not a bad but more like an up and coming neighborhood. There are some great places to eat near by for sure. The ambience of the hotel is cool but here are the misses. 1) Parking is almost $50 a day. This isn't Manhattan. 2) No coffee in the rooms. This is a big miss and would be okay if the coffee in the front was kept full. Twice they were completely out and I had to tell front desk staff. One of the times they were out of cups and the other time no lids. The first day the creamer was also bad. I informed the from desk staff but they really seemed more concerned with talking to each other. 3) Rooms are on the smallish size but they did save room by removing the coffee maker. They are well appointed but fairly cheap in decor. There was a shadow box framed hatchet in the bathroom. For emergencies I guess? Either way the box was falling apart. Super cheaply made like a grade school art project. 4) The gym, which is hugely important to me, was small and cramped and on floor -1 (whatever that is supposed to mean). The free weights are really awkward by design and I haven't seen in any like those modern days. There are zero bands and the multi function machine is missing key pieces of equipment. They were missing towels one day and the water machine was broken. The good news is that they spent money on a giant tv. Also, there are no lighter weights. Clearly, this was put together by someone who doesn't work out...ever. 5) The valet services - call or text ahead - be warned it always take 15 minutes. Sometimes they will be 3-4 people standing around and other times no one. 6) Lastly check your bill. I received an in room dining charge for no reason but it was handled by Michael at the hotel efficiently and effectively. This is why I gave the extra star. 7) The hotel's number isn't actually listed on the website. Just media and sales and there is no way they can transfer you. That was a WTF moment. This hotel is trying to be upscale but they just aren't there yet. My advice is to stay outside the city and Uber/Lyft in. It will be cheaper, you skip the parking and you can still experience the restaurants. There isn't much else there anyway. read more

Nice hotel, but unfortunately horrible customer service. Had issues with them back in April and again this month. Both times I had to email multiple people to get a response. Tried the in room dining experience this month and the room keys didn't work, they had the wrong video set up for us, I didn't get wine I ordered, and they refunded my card for the wrong amount. If you're paying $500 for a dinner they should have these small details in order. We won't be back. read more

Went here for some cocktails for my best friends birthday. Everyone at the bar was amazing. We paid our tab, went to sit down on a couch. Well friend and I thought maybe we would just stay here and eat dinner. Went up to the hostess to look at the dinner menu, and decided to take a look at the lounge menu instead. Well, we got our lounge menu and numerous times made eye contact with the people working at the place. A few times after trying to make eye contact we had to flag someone down. He took our menu, proceeded to ROLL HIS EYE AT US. We see him go to the bar, point and a couple of his coworkers look at us. Not cool. I hate writing bad reviews, but I would never recommend this place. read more

I had high hopes for this place but it was very disappointing. We came there for brunch on the roof top. It was a beautiful day and the space was nice. When the first part of our party arrive, they were greeted with by a woman who told them to wait while they got the table ready. they were waiting in the common area by the bar and they asked the bartender if they could have a drink and were told "no". When the rest of the party arrived a woman rudely "excuse me! Can I help you" we let her know we were meeting people who had already been seated. She brought us back to the table and walked away. When we arrived, the ladies at the table were waiting for their drinks that they had ordered 8 before. We continued to wait another 10 minutes before I went to get someone's attention to request service. I passed a server with a tray full of drink and asked if she was coming to our table, she responded with with an unfriendly "yes, that's who these drinks as for", I replied okay thanks because we have been waiting for awhile. She quickly replied "that's because I was getting all these drinks". When she got back to the table to drop off the drinks she let us know that we didn't have the rest of our order and would have to go back. Another 5 minutes passed before they were brought their beer backs and 10 minutes before we received our drinks. At this time we have been at the table for a total of 38 minutes and were finally all receiving drinks. At this point we all decided having brunch here would not be worth the anticipated hour plus wait for food if drinks took that long. We have all been in the service industry and are empathetic to issues that arises. However, the lack of customer service made the waiting intolerable. There is clearly a lack of management as both employee interaction we had were unpleasant. read more
