They worked with me after I had gotten in an accident and had to wait forever for the insurance process, and extended the car for as long as I needed. Even cut down costs after I had the rental for an extended amount of time. Car was clean, smelled clean, and ran like a dream. As a rental experience I this was pretty good. I booked online and the car was fetched when I arrived. The staff were very patient when I mis understood the insurance rule and checked with another store to help me understand. The price was good and I got the 'protect the car package' which was worth it as the gutter/drains are high around here we scraped the bumper twice. No questions asked when handed back. I extended the rental over the phone and no surprises on drop off was important. I am rating 5 stars as the most important thing to me for a one month rental was no surprise costs. The car was a Hyundai with 400 miles on it. The staff were efficient and courteous even when obviously busy. read more

San Clemente Hertz - Bill, the owner started to help us and after 2 minutes just stood up to answer a call on his cell phone without saying a word to us! We sat there for 5 minutes before someone else came to help us. Booked a full size vehicle but was given a minivan that smelled of smoke covered by some kind of scent that smelled horrible also. The vehicle had over 30K miles, had stained seats that came with free cigarette burns in them. Was not given a walk around at all. Went back in to request the correct size vehicle and was told "that's all we have". After displaying my dissatisfaction, I was told I could drive it 30 miles away to the airport and exchange it at my own expense!!! When I returned the correct size vehicle (that I had swapped, 60 mile roundtrip at my expense) that did not smell, did not have burns in the seat, and had appropriate mileage for the Hertz fleet, nobody in the place could care less about any of the issues I had. Way too many other choices out there to have to endure this kind of service. read more

The have an e-mail for customer care but there are no longer any responses in my experience. I needed information & the customer care department from the main office are entirely unreachable and never get back to the customers. I wasted my time coming here. I had a car reserved but they ran out supposedly because I was late (which wasn't under my control..shuttle took too long). Anyway, the reservation is supposed to hold for two hours, and I was there an hour late. The guy working there, who claimed he was a manager, said during the holiday season they only hold the car for an hour. I really doubt they would even have a car for me if I showed up exactly on time. The manager was a real jerk. He didn't apologize even once or offer any solutions. I was already frazzled because of the day not going well and visibly emotional but instead of being sympathetic, he was an a$$hole. I even said, "no wonder your yelp reviews are so low" and he said "I know" w/out any remorse. I would recommend they shut down this Hertz or hire a new manager becaue this location gives Hertz a bad name. read more

Hertz deserves 0 stars. This company is dishonest and a bunch of thieves!!!!! Get overcharged a total of 1700$ on my debit card even after I didn't have the vehicle anymore. After having to call corporate over 30+ times and they admitted the mistakes and claimed I'd have my money back in 3-5 business days was said over and over and over. Filed fraudulent paperwork with my Bank and now they refuse to return my 200$ deposit on top of it all! They said they would return my money and when I'd call back they told me a different story. Even had the audacity to say "well, some of our agents are new so they weren't correct on what they told you" I've never been so screwed over by a company in my life!! Have been a gold card member for years. Called ahead to reserve a LOW MILEAGE CLEAN CAR, only to be given a beat up car with 50,000 miles! Back seat had dusty foot prints; front seat had a big stain, steering wheel, shifter and door handle all were sticky and dirty. Worst of all the inside of the car smelled like a dirty sweaty person slept in it!!! Disgusting! Called this location to explain the problems 15 minutes after driving away...was told "We will make a note of it." Really??? This is your idea of customer service?! Spent the next 5 days calling daily to speak to the manager...who was always out, busy, or at doctors appointments. The only guy there who is professional and tries to help is Garrett...he is great, but restricted by his manager. The rest of the people there are worthless excuses for customer service people! Terrible service, no call backs. They kept telling me to call the 800 # to get a discount. That was another horrible experience of nobody wanting, or able to help until I paid for my bill in full! Was told on 4 separate dates that someone would call me back....never happened! Returned the car way cleaner than received it, as I had to detail/clean the inside myself! Had to wait another 3 days for my payment to be "processed in the system" before I could call billing to get some kind of a discount for the crappy experience. Actually had customer service tell me they had other calls they needed to get to! Was offered $25 gift certificate for my troubles....what....doubt I will ever use Hertz again! Has taken 7 days of calling daily and now maybe they will issue a small credit back to me but have to wait 7 more days! We'll see if this happens. Terrible location to deal with....and obviously it is the trickle down effect from corporate not having a clue how to deal with problems....down to the manager....and then to his staff. They wanted me to pay the difference in price. Ridiculous. I have never had this issue with any other car rental company, if the car promised is out of stock you get what they have left for the agreed upon price. This place is the worst! The service is horrible, the cars are dirty with cigarette holes in the seats, and the owner is not helpful. This place is a combo one stop for shipping and car rentals and shouldn't even be in business. Less than 24 hours after receiving a crappy beat up, dirty, dented...car from them, the tire light came on and it was out of gas withing 7 miles. It came to me with less than 1/4 tank of gas. I asked for a swap out of cars and they said no, that I would have to pay for any repairs to the tire. The owner is a jerk and the manager is just a kid that ships boxes. They don't even have an area to wash the cars and only have like 4 cars in the lot. Horrible horrible service. DO NOT GO HERE!!! I've used the Enterprise in San Clemente and their service is much better. read more

Wish I could give ZERO STARS! I will never rent from this place, or Hertz in general, anymore. My initial charge of $300 ended up being a $500 billing charge! I was never provided with an "SRA" (Rental Agreement) or ANY paperwork upon rental. And was nickel & dimed for ANYTHING they could possibly concoct! Including a $100 charge for cleaning pet hair, even though I purchased LDW - for $11/day ($110), which was SUPPOSED to cover that. (Their contracts are also vague & refer to irrelevant subjects, resulting in a "wild goose chase" that even corporate can't clarify). And don't dare return the tank with a hair less than given - - I was charged over $23 ($9.99/gal!) because the tank was returned "7/8 full". The hotel told us our car was being delivered to the hotel from another location and that we had to wait. Long story short... It never arrived! Don't EVER use them. What a loser company! My original reservation was at a location nearby (San Juan Capistrano) that closed the week before my rental. I called the day prior to my rental to confirm all of the information had transferred to the new location and I was all set. I was nervous about my upcoming experience when I read the reviews on here, but so far, everything was checking out fine. When I got to the Marriott, the office is tucked back down a hallway and shares space with the hotel's business center. It's really small, and I barely fit inside with two other people waiting in front of me. Because the office is so small, the staff is small, and it takes a while for one person to do everything (in and out, grabbing cars, doing walk-arounds, coming back in for paperwork). The gentleman behind the counter was very nice and continually apologized for the wait I had. When it was my turn, I was offered a free upgrade from a standard mid-sized SUV to a luxury mid-sized SUV. I declined as I was doing a lot of driving and wanted the better gas mileage, but a nice gesture. The paperwork was brought up quickly, and no issues. I had made my reservation prior to arriving, and was not pressured to add the damage waiver or any other additional items to my rental, which I REALLY appreciated. We went for the walk-around and there were no damage forms (he said they had run out). We still made note of everything on the car, and I got pictures just in case. The car was in great condition. Like-new, in fact, save for a couple of small dings on the side and a loose trunk handle. The interior smelled like a new car, the miles were low and everything was in great working order for the couple weeks I had it. Returning the car was the same as picking it up. A bit of a wait due to low staffing, but friendly service (same gentleman I worked with when I picked up). While not the most convenient location in terms of wait time, I had no issues with the car or service, and will certainly keep them in mind for the future. Reading the previous reviews I was worried, but perhaps they made some staffing changes with the closure of the other location, or due to poor reviews. Reserved a vehicle through our business account for a Saturday 2:30pm pick up time as the Hertz website stated they were open until 3:00pm on Saturdays after June 1st. My co-worker arrived Saturday prior to 2:30pm and found it to be closed. We proceeded to have a 2 hour ordeal to rectify the situation and ultimately had to cancel the Hertz rental and utilize a different company at the John Wayne airport. I called Jake the Manager at San Clemente Hertz today to be met by an apathetic response that could have cared less that this cost us over 2 hours of inconvenience. He simply stated the website has the wrong hours and "they are working on fixing it" and the fine print says hours can change due to COVID. When I asked why the system would allow a rental if they are closed and why they didn't notify us that they actually close at 2:00pm he stated there was no contact information. However, I utilized our business account which has contact information and I entered my work email and received the reservation confirmation to my work email. He said they just contract with Hertz and that John is the Hertz area manager for their location. I asked for John's contact information and Jake said he could not provide John's personal information. I stated I simply wanted his business email just as he and I both have business emails and he refused saying he wasn't allowed to give me that information. He seemed unbothered they had lost a $500+ rental or that he wasted 2+ hours of our time. I'd recommend renting from a real Hertz or actual rental car agency. read more

DO NOT EVER DO BUSINESS with this location! I live up the street and rented a car for a quick trip out to Phoenix and back. I returned the car full of fuel as agreed to in the contract. The desk attendant was too busy to look at the car when I returned it so he told me to just drop the keys and he'd send me a receipt. When I got the receipt I had been charged $77.79 for gas even though I returned the car full of fuel. The manager was completely rude about it and unwilling to reverse the charges. I'm not the kind of person that writes reviews but this is just bad business. When you do rent a car, never drop the car off without them handing you a receipt. Surprised these crooks didn't try to charge me for a windshield or something. Disappointing read more

This is the best rental car experience I've ever had...the owner and everyone there is amazing and so helpful and considerate! Quick pick up at the body shop and nice ride back to their location. They went out of their way doing things they don't normally do just to be helpful to me and get me back on the road in a very nice and clean rental car. I would highly recommend them for any rental car needs, rental truck needs, or for shipping and mailbox needs! This is a local gem in San Clemente! This is by far one of the worst companies to rent a car from. I went to rent a car to travel to las Vegas and I was asked if I wanted to get their insurance and roadside assistance. I said no to both because I have AAA and I have my own insurance. I was quoted $300 and they told me to sign on the line. When I got billed the total was $604.06!! When I called to try to get a quick solution to this ( my bank account was shot because of this) they gave me the run around for pretty much two weeks. The explanation I got from their manager Lisa, when I finally got a hold of her, as to why she couldn't answer or call me back in a timely matter was she was busy the first week and sick the second. Well they gave me credit for half the amount of the extra charges I told them I didn't want. Talk to corporate you say? Well apparently they don't take complaints. Rent from enterprise or alamo. I turned my car in 8/26/12, the day before Todd L. and completely agree with him. Read his review as well. I will now check my charges also. I booked a mini van and even called the day before to confirm the mini van. When I showed up, NO MINI VAN. The agents arranged for another vehicle and said I could trade in Nor Cal. No luck. At least they tried. When I returned the car, Tanner, the manager was VERY short and rude. I got about two sentences out when he walked out the door to check the car and said, "basically NO one that books a mini van gets one and I was lucky to get a car period, most others don't even get a vehicle".... REALLY?. I asked him since Hertz screwed everyone, does that makes it right? His answer was, "if you don't like my explanation tough" He made no effort to find out why Hertz books Mini Vans and sucks people in but NEVER delivers them. A total looser. I rent vehicles about 10 times a year and will NEVER use Hertz again, I can see why there are so many One star reviews. This guy had the personality of a dill pickle and had no sense of customer service. It was like I was bothering him and his goal was to make sure I was irritated when I left. I was quoted $170.00 for my rental. When I saw the bill they added an additional $50.00 cleaning fee for dog hair. I have a dog and he does not go into the front seats. Also, I covered the back seats and the floor. But they insisted because of a few dog hairs, they had to clean the whole car. They are rip-offs! I do not recommend this place at all. read more
