Avoid this Hertz on Pico Plaza, San Clemente at all costs. The lady with dirty blonde straight hair had a an unprofessional attitude and was refusing to let me speak when I came in to ask about my booked reservation for that day. With no explanation, she states that they will be unable to provide the vehicle that was reserved by me in advance. She then proceeded to state that they were unable to provide the reservation because they do not accept debit cards for the reservation. I asked to speak to a supervisor as the terms and conditions on the Hertz Website state that they accept either a debit or credit card for payment. I asked to speak to a supervisor and she completely cut me off and interrupted me and she then proceeded to raise her voice. The supervisor came in, a gentleman with a condescending attitude refused to provide information and then got in my personal bubble. As a woman, I felt very threatened for my safety. As I tried to get answers, he stated he was calling the police and to leave his store without any explanation. Terrible service. I left really afraid and the guy followed me into the parking lot and was recording me. They refused to provide names and were not wearing name tags. read more

One Star - Disappointing and Unfair I returned my rental with 390 miles after receiving it with 315, yet was still charged for not refueling. The agent didn't care that I returned it with minimal use and offered no flexibility just a flat-out $12/gallon charge. My personal car is a two seater and whenever I need a larger vehicle to take clients out or deliver my systems, I rent from this location. It's easy and it's convenient. I will NEVER AGAIN reserve a car from this location. Last week I was moving my son into University of Utah from San Clemente and reserved a Tahoe sized vehicle for $800+ from this Hertz location (1 month early). My reservation carried a significant cost premium for the extra large vehicle, but due to the amount and size of what I needed to transport, this sized vehicle was required. My pick-up time was at 5:00. At 3:00 I called to confirm they were all set with my rental. When I called they informed me that the only vehicle they had for me was a mid-sized SUV, which wasn't going to meet my needs (plus I'd be paying twice the cost of that size vehicle). The only remedy they gave me was to call the Hertz 800 number and try to find a different vehicle (the size of what I reserved). After 1 hour and 55 minutes of unsuccessfully working to resolve this on the phone with Hertz, we realized we had 5 minutes to show up for our 5:00 pick-up time to pick up the only car we could find. My wife called to give them a heads up that we would be there right at 5:00 or 1-2 minutes late and not to leave. They informed us that they were already closing and that they wouldn't be open at 5:00. When I challenge them leaving and asked to talk with a manager, they put me on hold without saying a word. While we waited on hold we drove 5 minutes to their office and arrived at 5:02. WE WERE STILL ON HOLD AND THEY ALL LEFT FOR THE DAY. Hours later, Enterprise car rental was able to find a car for us. If it wasn't for them coming through for us, I would completely stuck. This was supposed to be an amazing day in my sons college journey and thanks to Hertz, it became a frustrating disaster and their lack of service made it infinitely worse. NEVER AGAIN!!!! read more

Ok, this rating is not for the Hertz corporation, but for this particular franchise. 1) the car category I reserved was not what I was offered. I needed a full size Four door sedan, luxury. The offered me a small Kia 2) The man that seems to be in charge is rude, condescending and has a take it or leave it attitude. 3) The car I ended up with had issues with the radio, navigation and phone. basically the main control screen was inoperable. I called Hertz Corp and explained the issue, as I didn't want to be responsible or accused of breaking it. When I returned the car, the manager (as mentioned above) was unapologetic and offered no compensation or vouchers etc. when I informed him i needed the navigation system as I was traveling in remote areas he basically responded with a "i will tell the company" 4) I returned the car right on time, not late at all and when I looked at my receipt, he added a late fee. He told me it was the computer automatically adding it because I was over 29 min late. Not true, turns out he added it manually. SCAMMER!! When I saw my final bill in my email, he had removed the charge but added a "early return fee" this time. What a crook. I reserved a cargo van last week through Expedia. I received a confirmation of the reservation from Expedia. Yesterday, I received an email from Hertz confirming the reservation for tomorrow. I just got a call from Hertz saying that they don't have any cargo vans available. Why was I able to make the reservation if they didn't have inventory? NEVER USE THIS LOCATION!!!! I retuned a cargo van when I had ordered a pick-up truck and was charged $34.61 in fuel, THE TRUCK WAS RETURNED FULL. When confronted about it, he asked if I was calling him a liar and when I said maybe he made a mistake and filled the wrong truck he pushed my receipt back at me and told me were done. HE DID NOTHING to investigate, I have the receipts for my gas. THIS MAN IS A LIAR AND A CROOK DO NOT GO HERE!!!! Side note, His mask was down when I went in and I asked him to pull it back up since we were indoors and less than 6ft away. I rented a car from this company at this location due to a car accident. After a week I called them to see if I am supposed to bring the car back. The rep said, rest assured! we will let you know when the insurance company wants the car returned. Cut the long story short; They did not call me and I was two weeks overdue. I received a call on a day of surgery from their main office that the car was overdue. And I ended up paying a great sum as a penalty. Because the insurance company did not cover that part. regardless of negotiations on repair of my car That was a terrible experience. Considering my thoughtfulness on following up. I've rented from this place for quite a while now. Unfortunately, I won't be renting from them again. I've never given a review on Yelp before, and probably never will again. However, when the owner rents out your reserved car to someone else, and then blames your for not having "common sense", I think I need to save people from abuse this guy is capable of. We had rented a car for the third straight week and we're picking the car up at 1030 AM. My wife made the reservation as she had done the previous two weeks. I was dropped off at Hertz while my wife took our car back home. When I walked in to Hertz and gave my name, the owner claimed that we were supposed to pick the car up at 800 AM (according to his computer). I knew that wasn't the case as we weren't leaving town until 1100 AM, and we're are not morning people. When I asked the owner that even if we had booked the pick up for 800, why they didn't attempt to contact us before giving our car away. That was when he replied with "its common sense". That was when I have became angry and eventually kicked out of his establishment without any apology on his part. I can give more details, but the old philosophy of the customer is always right doesn't exist at this establishment. There are plenty of places to rent a car. This is my favorite place to go rent a car if I ever need to go out of town, or if my cat is in the shop or if I have guests from out of town and need an extra set of wheels around. Bill and his team are super polite, very efficient and extremely helpful. Even if you forget to call before they close ( they close kinda early and are closed all day on Sunday) to let them know that you are keeping the rental for longer, they totally understand. I most definitely recommend anyone who is need of renting a car, truck or van to call them directly. Don't mess with the third party apps ( Priceline , or kayak ...) Or even Hertz.com , this particular Hertz is a snail business band I am all about supporting the small businesses. Thank you Bill for always being there when I need wheels. My car was my dream car I had saved for just to have this car. My insurance covers a certain amount of funds for a compact car. When I arrived at this Hertz rental office in San Clemente the owner was so wonderful and kind, he could tell I was upset and stressed. This is literally the WORST place to rent a car! Do NOT go here. They will charge your account for whatever they want. They have no follow through, their billing department is the most unorganized and air headed group of people I have ever talked to. They charged my account $138 when they were only supposed to charge me $88, then a month later for no reason they decided to charge me another $31. Be aware of this company and do even think about giving them your card information. I have tried 3 different times to dispute the charges with proof to their billing department but they seem to still have no record of my previous calls. Hahaha. Wow. Glad to know that I'm far from the only one who will never ever send someone to this location again. I'm from back east, so this place is pretty close to my house so I told her about them for a car rental. She did most everything one line but then it just went downhill from there. She asked for a van so we could all drive up to Santa Barbara for a day without having to take two cars, but of course when she got there there were no vans left. We weren't late, we were even a little early, but they had ran out the day before (which judging from these reviews is what they tell everyone). So we ended up with a sedan, and had to take two cars. This thing had cigarette burns in the upholstery and the smoky smell to go with it, and when we brought it back, the girl at the counter had the nerve to try to ding us for smoking in it! My sister threw a fit and they didn't end up charging us, but they did waste our time and give us a crappy smelly car. Driving to Enterprise next time, never suggesting these jokers again. read more

I don't like writing a bad review on yelp, but I had the most awful and disappointing experience at Hertz in Dana point. They overcharged $160 to my car rental bill for an additional coverage for the rental car which I don't need since I already have State Farm as my insurance! Upset obviously, I called Hertz office the next day and asked for this mistake to be rectified. I spoke to Joseph, a manager at the front desk, and he informed me that he could refund the amount back to my credit card, but it may take up to 30 days or I could take a voucher for $100. Then I was asked to call back the next day. During that conversation I discovered the refund was rescinded and the voucher only, would be offered. In good faith I trusted Hertz. All I ask, is for what is fair. I understand that mistakes happen and people are imperfect. After this I have felt thoroughly disrespected. All I simply wanted is the portion of the bill not authorized to be refunded. A $100 voucher will not suffice. Due to this matter, my friends and family decided to take our business else where and will not do any business with Hertz in the future. read more

This location treated me as an inconvenience from the start, and actually scolded for being a little late. The cars are kept in the Marriot's valet-only garage, but the representative did not get the car for me. I drove around lost for a few minutes (on hold with Hertz) before an irritated valet took pity and let me out. He was very confused as to why I was in the garage in the first place, as Hertz is supposed to get the car for me. When returning the car, I called ahead to make sure that they could and would give me a ride back, as was advertised on their website. I was assured that this was the case, but when I arrived not 15 minutes later, the representative clearly had no idea what I was talking about. He had to chase down two coworkers who were on their way out the door for this to happen. These encounters would be enough to make sure I don't return, but after reading other reviews, I checked my credit card statement and found that I was charged for an extra day. I had scheduled to return the car at 10pm, but was told that since they would be closed and the rentals go by 24 hour periods, I would not be charged extra as long as I got the car back by 10am (my original rental time) the following day. Clearly this was not true. There are enough options in the area, absolutely do not use this company. read more

This was the worst experience renting a car I have ever had and I rent cars at least once a week and as many as 4 times in a single week. The worst: the car stunk of either baby's diaper or cat feces. It was bad but I figured I just needed to air the car out. Nope, it kept coming back and it literally made me sick to my stomach. Next, the car was infested with ants. I found 3 on my arm before I realized how bad it was. I killed over 20 ants in the first hour I had the car alone. I also ordered an intermediate and they gave me a compact. I now know why they wouldn't come 4.3 miles to pick me up in that terd. I had to leave my car on the street outside Marriott to pick up the car until I could get someone to go with me to pick up my car. I was treated with absolute insolence and it was as if I was an irritation to these people. I will never let any of my people rent from this location again! read more

My car was totaled a month ago, and insurance sent me here. Original experience was a bit frustrating, mainly just the process from reservation to actually getting a car, they were "out of cars". I did a little prodding and finally they said oh we do have one but its smaller than what we have down for you. Maybe next time throw that out there in the beginning, it would have saved me a lot of stress timing wise. Guys at the front we straight forward. Which I don't mind usually , but I could see how someone would take it the wrong way. Now time line to the present. Still have the rental. I call today with a lot of questions about cut off dates, and pricing... Pretty much the while kit and caboodle. Abby was very patient and informative. This rating is not due to service. It is about the not so gentlemanly man at the San Clemente office. I called to question a charge and I did not understand Hertz' entire process. I thought we were due a refund because we paid up front when Hertz delivered the car to the garage where our car was being repaired. Apparently, that charge fell off and we were charged the final bill today, 3 weeks later. I asked about the process 3 different times. The man said, "M'am, I've just said this 5 different times; I don't mean to be rude, but...." "You are." I said and hung up. He can't have had a bad day yet. I had a vehicle reserved for a specific time and when I showed up to get it, they told me it wasn't available. They charged me $50 for pet hair. My dog was in the car one time and was in the back. The back part of the Nissan Rogue has no fabric and has a plastic coating. The car had 10 dog hairs in it at best. When I called to dispute the charge, the manager, Jake, was not helpful and unapologetic. He was condescending and does not understand what customer service is. I asked to receive a copy of the bill from the car wash to prove that the car had been detailed and was told it was not possible. He then told me the place they take the car is a $30 wash and the other $20 is for the inconvenience of the worker who took the car to the car wash. I will never use Hertz or this location again. I emailed AAA and told them they should not recommend them and contacted the auto body shop as well. read more

It is hard to imagine how this Hertz stays in business! AAA called and reserved a car for me and sent me a confirmation. I arrived there less than 15 minutes later and they said we have no cars! But what was even worse was their attitude of "we don't care" tough luck. When I called AAA to see what went wrong and inform them of the situation the older Hertz employee told me to leave the premises and kept repeating ordering me to leave making it impossible to hear what the AAA representative was saying. I left - never to return! There was another customer in the store when I arrived and she left very angry as well. I heard them tell her that "it's Hertz policy and if you don't like it please just leave". it was not the only one who was treated this way! This occurred on Tuesday March 12 about 4:30 pm. Perhaps she will write a review and confirm this. The kind people from San Clemente Auto Center,who had dropped me off there, returned and took me to Enterprise where there were smiling employees and great customer service!
