Renter beware...I've rented here before. This time my experience was terrible. 1. Car I reserved online was a standard 4-door to fit 5 people and luggage (or Chrysler 200). When I arrive to pick up car there were CRAP options. 2. I had to choose a VW Tiguen which was dirty. I cleaned it myself! 3. I returned to car Sunday after hours(best part of rental). I wanted to pay in cash which is not allowed UNTIL you drop off but they were closed. SO I came back Monday to pay cash. The mgr should have told me exact amount only is accepted. But he didn't. A) The staff made us wait (there were 3 people waiting)! I had to knock on their office door bc we were waiting more than 10 min. B) I paid in cash but they had no change. The sales associate had NO clue they require exact change if paying cash (ahhh hello, learn that in training??) So I ran around the area trying to find change because they had none in their safe (yah, right!) The only good thing about this location is being able to return after hours. Bottom line the staff here needs more training and they should have more car options especially for reservations made online to meet customer expectations! read more

Hertz Paramus failed to properly close my rental, continued pursuing charges and return demands, and sent repossession-related notices even after I repeatedly contacted Hertz and obtained another rental through the same program. They had access to the account records, internal notes, and recorded calls, yet failed to investigate or correct the problem before it escalated into months of billing disputes and court proceedings. This was not one harmless mistake. It was a repeated failure to communicate, document, mitigate, and take responsibility. Any customer dealing with this location should save every agreement, email, screenshot, and call record. A problem Hertz creates can quickly become the customer's burden to disprove. They charged me over two grand for three days in a rental, luckily the court ruled in my favor because they even sought legal fees from me. Incredibly risky place to do business, I fronted the charges without issue for a month, and they still treated me as if I was the problem. Up until the judge ruled in my favor and in favor of my damages. Hertz will exert control over your bank regardless of what you say or do, so be careful! read more

Made an online reservation, came to pick up vehicle, and was told there was no vehicle available. Then was told we should have called before coming. No resolution, no apology, no assistance, terrible customer service. I don't know if it's a corporate issue or just this location but this is the worst rental experience. There's no way someone can make reservations online for items that do not exist. Employees in the customer service field should know and understand how to service customers. Blaming the customer for not calling ahead (not a normal practice at all) is disrespectful and ridiculous! I have been coming here for at least 2.5 years to rent a car when I visit from California. Linda a manager I believe is always welcoming, thorough and fast. It always is an easy in and easy out when I work with her. The selection of cars fits my needs from a Suburban that I needed for a Duke University graduation to an Atlas for a West Virginia hunting and fishing trip. The cars are clean and I have had no issues so far. If you are over the long lines at the airport like I was, I would highly recommend renting from this location and Linda. They were not accommodating at all and PS I am Hertz five star zero accommodation for loyal customers. Shameful. I also paid for a suv and they didn't have any available. Note: 1. I got a defective car. It was obvious the transmission was working improperly because it strained going up the slightest inclines, labored going up hills, hardly accelerated when merging onto the highway and when switching gears the car jerked hard. I needed to return this because my safety was jeopardized. I encountered resistance to the return and was charged extra even after setting a boundary with them that I didn't want to be overcharged for their car's malfunctioning. Instead of fixing the problem, I was gaslit, they proceeded to overcharge me for services I did not ask for and accuse me of asking for a refund. I clearly stated upfront that I did not want to be charged a penny more or less for what is their mistake. Is anyone out here in 2025 that agrees that service is not what it used to be. When it was their mistake in the past they accommodated you, took responsibility and apologized, not piled on more charges. Linda was honest, professional and efficient on the phone but not present when I got to the location. I had to wait over 2 hours to get a safe car. The poorly trained worker misquoted me repeatedly, made mistake after mistake and when I questioned this handed me to Waleed who was helpful but overworked. Had a reservation for today, took an Uber 20 miles there for them to tell me they can't log into their system and "there probably won't be a car available anyway." No trying, no resolution, no timeframe, just "we'll let you know, this happens all the time." Female employee snapping her neck, talking over me, has nerve to tell me to call the location "next time" before making a reservation. What's the point of a reservation then? What's the reason for attitude if I did what I was supposed to do, yet your company didn't? Sorry, won't be a next time. First and last time, I walked out of there and took an Uber back home. I had a small issue with the vechile and Linda and Waleed really went above and beyond to make sure that everything was situated not just for the car, but for myself. they gave me bags to put my things in and kept me company until my Uber arrived. highly recommend this location! read more

Had over 1,000 in additional fees. The customer service representative did not provide any information rather than saying it was my fault for not taking off to come in. DO NOT, NOT Rent from this location. I have had the most horrible experience. I returned my car on 9/12. Everyday since 9/12, I get calls from Hertz customer service telling me to contact them because the vehicle has not been returned. I have called customer service on multiple days and I have spoken to a different customer service rep each time. The person takes the information, tells me they will sent the info to the rental location so the contract can be closed yet the next day I get the same call. The second to last customer service rep said he completed a form and sent it to corporate to resolve yet after 48 hours, I am still getting calls. Today the latest customer service rep says she has escalated it to her superior and has said that she can assure me it will be resolved today. Apparently the site is fairly new and definitely has training issues. It is a small location and the two people there seem overwhelmed. 10 days after returning my rental and the contract is still not closed, I do not have a receipt and customer service has no problem in inconveniencing the customer and asking me to keep providing my information OVER AND OVER AGAIN to no avail. Their system is broken!!!! Customer Service is ineffective and not empowered to resolve the matter. The location is unreachable by phone. Today the rep asked me if I could go to the location. Service was terrible. Reserved a car and received a confirmation. In the morning, we called to confirm and no one answered the phone. When we got there, they would not honor the reservation. There were a dozen cars on the lot but we were told they were out of service. Apparently they play the same game as the airlines and oversell their fleet. Horrible. They tried charging me $108 for the insurance policy I cancelled 1.5 days after I received car ( I had car for 9 days). I called the day before I returned the car to make sure everything would be in order and it wasn't. Then the representative tried telling me I had to pay 3 days of coverage when I clearly cancelled the coverage within 36 hours of receiving car. The representative took 15 minuted to figure out it was only a day and a half before adjusting the refund. The tax was never adjusted so I'm still in the process of receiving my full refund that I am owed. I called the hertz national number trying to get issue resolved but have been hung up on several time. My next stop in better business borough. There crooks will not get away with this anymore. I had a really bad experience trying to rent a car from Payless Car Rental and had to call Hertz at the very last minute. They had excellent customer service and ensured that I was able to get in a vehicle immediately. Due to the fact that it was a last-minute reservation I didn't have a chance to really look up any promotions or deals on the rental car but they did their best in ensuring that I had the best price. He says that a third party will charge you. I quickly went to the bank and got money because this sounded ridiculous. He is deceptively almost recommending people to go through tolls without paying. I incurred a $30 charge for a 50 cent toll, luckily I didn't take his advice and just drive through tolls!! When I tried to call, he put me on hold and gave the same speech about 3rd party crap. I picked up my rental today from this location. The staff was rather cold and glad After I politely declined on both the prepaid gas and additional insurance, she pointed and told me "the car is over there." Her body never moved from the kiosk. She gave me the keys and I was on my way. was not advised of any of the important information, where is the car's registration or is there an easy pass and the charges maybe. I only read on here (yelp) that there is an easy pass attached to the car and the charges are ridiculous. I went on a Friday before a holiday and even though they were very busy they got me in and out in a reasonable time. The manager was very friendly and you could tell the employees were working really hard. I originally got a smaller car, but I didn't like the way it drove and asked if I could bring it back in and exchange it for a new one. They had no problem with that and I was able to get a bigger, nicer car even though I came in last minute and I declined the first time they asked. They did not even charge me extra for upgrading, which was a pleasant surprise as I was prepared to pay more for something nicer and I used a AAA discount. I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews for this location. I had no hidden charges, etc.I was informed about the cost of insurance (and given a choice between the different levels/costs) The price I was charged was exactly what was on my slip when I returned the car. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I've never had a worse customer service experience than with this Hertz Rent A Car in Paramus. I walked in excited, ready to head out on a great vacation than I had planned for months with my girlfriend. We had scheduled the car for 9a and the plan was to get on the road as soon as we picked it up. Sonny and the Hertz staff had other plans. From the moment we walked in, Sonny was against us. I am 24 years old (25 in 6 months or so) and per most rental car companies, there are absurd fees for "underage" drivers. That's fine, I was able to secure a discount using my USAA membership. I walked in with a reservation for about $600 over 10 days, as opposed to over $1k without the discount. Sonny must not have liked that, because he decided not to honor the discount. He went on and on about how people were abusing the USAA discount and how he needed verification and a letter from USAA. He tried to get them on the phone but after about 60 seconds he said they were closed. I got them on the phone in about 5-10 minutes (heads up...they don't close...) and handed the phone off to Sonny for verification. He went behind CLOSED DOORS with my phone to talk with the woman. He came back and handed back the phone and said she had something to tell us. The woman explained thoroughly that while we qualified for the discount (mind you we're talking about $400 here, no small matter to me), Sonny decided NOT to honor it per his own decision. WHAT? He decided that we were not going to be able to rent the car at the discounted rates. I asked repeatedly for him to total up our cost using another discount we qualified for, but all he could explain was these extra fees, charges, etc. and never gave me a straight answer. As opposed to simply accepting the discount that we qualified for like a normal person and someone interested in providing good customer service (not even good, just basic service), he decided to try and f*** us. My girlfriend walked out in tears and we didn't know what to do. That's when we called the Hertz in Westwood, NJ (10 mins down the road). Ashlie Grimes was an angel and a sweetheart and rescued our trip. She accepted the discount (no verification, no letter, no bulls***, just looked at the member # and said "great!") and we were on our way within 15 minutes. I hope you take the time to read this whole review and NEVER go to the Paramus, NJ Hertz. My interactions with Sonny were the worst I've ever experienced, and ever hope to experience. Will never rent from this company again. Rented from Nashville airport a car that has a horrible vibration and feels extremely unsafe driving. Called the airport 3x the phone rings and no one picks up just disconnects. Tried the 800 number no option for a live voice except sales, tried sales, representative told me to call roadside assistance, I told her I don't need that I need a new car. She put me on hold and never picked up again. Called roadside assistance, Mark told me I can bring it to a shop and wait for them to fix it or bring it to a local Hertz. Wait for them to fix it?!?!?! While on vacation I have nothing better to do with my time? I told him the proper thing to do if you have gave me a dangerous car is to come exchange it out and give me a new one. He said we can't do that. I called two local Hertz, they told me they had no inventory go to the airport where I got the car. I said one, I don't have time for that and two, they don't answer the phone how do I know if I even went there if they have a car for me if no one else does? ** SCUMBAGS / SCAMMERS!!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS ** Arrived on a Friday prior to Labor Day Weekend after 2 Uber/Lyft car services ($20 spent already, as their location is nowhere near public transportation) only to find each customer's transaction was taking over 40-45mins to complete. Every customer was irate and complaining because they were lured in by "low rates" published on Expedia, etc. Only to be told: a) You'll be charged an additional ENTIRE DAY despite what your reservation says, because we're closed on a holiday and, even if you drop keys back the day it's due (they have a key slot) after they're closed, you'll be charged another day (WTF!???). B) They close at Noon (yes, 12pm) on Sunday, so you'll be charged an ADDITIONAL FULL DAY despite what your reservation says, and that online says they have 24hr drop off. The owner/manager whomever is running this place is obviously a SCUMBAG who takes advantage of people by being a remote location, forced to concede and pay whatever they demand because they're stranded in the middle of nowhere with no choice. After 2 hours only 1 customer finally got a car. Meanwhile the police were called!!! This is *LITERALLY* highway robbery. I've never seen such a sleezy, slow, inefficient and unethical car rental place with the Hertz name in all my life. I've gotten through small airport lines faster. Not an exxageration. The charge I received for "using" their EZ pass was bigger than the charge to actually rent the car.

Our car was delivered to us at the bus stop at the Paramus Mall (+) but we had to wait there for over 30 minutes (-). If it had been explained to us that there would be a delay, it would have been much better, but each time we called, we were told it would be just a few minutes, or five minutes. The guy who delivered our car was very pleasant, the car was great (super gas mileage!), and the return at Boston Logan was superb. Thanks! read more

It is rare that I take the time to write a review, but service at HERTZ PARAMUS is so bad, that if I can save someone else from the hassle, I will. I rented a car for a full week, using the Hertz website and my account number. I got a ride to get the car, 40 minutes away from home. They did not have the car available, or any similar sized car available, even though the website still showed them available while I was standing there. The manager MIKE H.. hid in the back while I talked to the front desk. I reserved a full size car, and they told me they couldn't help me. Then they offered a compact car at the same cost as the full size (there's usually a lower rate on the compact). I asked for a discount on the car given it's not what I wanted, Mike said NO. His attitude was bothered, as if he was hassled by having to deal with the situation. I took the car since it was a Saturday and we had travel scheduled, but just a warning to other customers, The HERTZ PARAMUS on Rt. 17 North has a very bad manager, they advertise cars that they don't have, and are not accommodating to offer reasonable solutions. read more

I give them zero stars, but the computer makes me give them at least one to proceed. The worst rental car experience every. We paid online and they couldn't process the rental on their computer, so after an hour of standing there and them doing and re-doing the paperwork over an over, both guys and telling us that had to do a new contract and we would get a credit for the online contract, we had to give them a credit card to put on file for the rental again, we were just so happy to get out of there. Then after we had the car for a month and return it, which again is a confused mess of waiting, we thought everything was good. Until our bills start coming in. They never credited us for the prepaid $530 charge and then they charged the wrong card for the month rental of $717, so we were charged twice. Then I called them to get it straightened out and they said they have to speak to their manager, an excuse we heard them use often while we were there waiting both times, they said they would look into it and call me back. I called back the next day and they said there was nothing that they can do. Did I try to call Hertz billing? I said you told us you would take care of this the 1st time and didn't and then look into it and you didn't. They STINK!!!!!! I called Hertz billing and they were normal nice people who took care of the big mess the Paramus Hertz created. Don't go here unless you have lots of spare time to wait around while they run around in circles and most likely mess up your paperwork. read more

Don't rent here if you expect service. My car was totaled in an accident that was not my fault. I usually rent from Enterprise but they had no vehicles available on the day that I needed one. So, I called Hertz. Well the morning that I arrived for my reserved vehicle they did not have enough staff on board to handle their traffic. No time to clean my car before my rental unless I wanted to wait another 45 minutes after already waiting that and being late for work! So then after finally finding a replacement used car to purchase which took almost two agonizing weeks, I returned the car after hours accidently leaving my Ez Pass attached by suction cup to the windshield. I called that location and there was no option to leave a message. I called road side assistance and they indicated they could not unlock the car and that I had to place a lost and found notice through Hertz online. I did that and then started calling the Paramus location at 7:30 and no one picked up. By the time I got there at 8:20, they had already rented the car to someone and had not had the car cleaned. I asked the guy who cleans the cars and he said he had not cleaned that one before it was sent out. Gross! Two rentals now and no cleaning! So the two men at the counter knew nothing. One said he would call the current renter to ask about my Ezpass and then would call me. I called three times during the day, they never called me and each time I was told the renter was not returning their call. Well I checked by Ezpass after work and it had been used by the other renter for over $13 of tolls! Thanks Hertz! I have now cancelled by EZ Pass and ordered a new one which takes 5 to 7 days to receive. I realize it was my error to leave it in the car but they should have checked their lost and found emails and inspected and cleaned cars before they were sent out. My husband and I rented a car for the summer from the Hertz location on 92 Route 17 North, Paramus, NJ. We were very lucky to meet Marie who was eager to help us select the right car. We did not like the first car we rented, from another location, which we only had for two days. When we stopped at this location Marie showed us a Toyota Camry which she thought we would be much happier with. She was certainly right. We had a wonderful experience and enjoyed driving this car whenever we used it. Marie was always happy to hear from us and was efficient, courteous, and super friendly. Whenever we had a question concerning the car she was quick to answer and address our concern. I look forward to continue renting from Hertz and I will certainly contact Marie to arrange my next rental. read more

Another terrible experience with Hertz, so bad that I actually took time to write this. Ugh. - Asked for a car with a full tank of gas, got a car with a 1/4 tank of gas - When I tried to adjust the rearview mirror 5 minutes into my drive, it fell down onto the center console (talk about dangerous); I was able to fix it back on (but couldn't adjust it without it falling off) when i stopped for gas - I was charged for the full tank of gas (I mean really, are you kidding me?) - I asked the sales agent if I could drop it off during off-hours. She told me I could and that I would need to drop the keys off in the drop box. she also said I'd pay any hourly rate up until the hour I dropped it off. Lo and behold, I paid for 2 extra days until the store reopened. - I contacted the CSR, who informed me that while the agent may not have had time to review the entire contract with me, the contract detailed their policy re: billing during off hours, so they "fulfilled their legal obligation." Are you kidding me? So, when I ask an agent, they can say whatever the they want as long as the multi-page, fine print contract says it correctly? I'll be contesting the charges and won't be using Hertz ever again. read more

Reserved a full size and was given a Ford Explorer XLT, very nice vehicle. Besides roomy in the front, it has 3rd row seat as well, not that I need it though. Nothing was broken inside this time, unlike my last rental with them, that one was trouble from day one, it shakes like crazy when speed above 50mph. Imagine I need to ride on that from NY to DC! I had been dealing with them for the past three years. But on 9/10/12, under new staff, I had the worst experience ever. They didn't have the car size I requested (small as I am alone), hence they gave me a minivan and charged me double of what I expected to pay. On top of that, the minivan was dirty (inside & out), had the maint. req. light on & didn't have a full tank of gas (although the rental agreement said it did). When I pointed all of this out, they said "oh sorry, I'll give you a coupon for next time"... coupon, really??? next time, really??? Worst rental experience I ever had... After traveling from Phoenix AZ to Paramus NJ I found the car I planned on using (family car) was having car trouble. My husband called Hertz in Paramus from AZ to make a reservation for a rental for me while I was getting a ride to pick up the car. When I got there to pick up car, I was told I had to make a new reservation. Agent said he would cancel the first one and make another for me. and he would even give me a better deal - Upgrade and more insurance for less money. OK sounds great. After getting to my destination, I realized I was charged almost DOUBLE than the first reservation. My bad. I did not read what I signed since I was so tired from traveling all day and dealing with personal car trouble when arriving. i just wanted to get in the car and get to my destination. So this was Lie #1 from agent. Well 2 MONTHS LATER still cannot get refund from the first reservation my husband made. I am told at Hertz corporate (because Hertz in Paramus where this all happened said they couldn't do anything for me) that the office where the agent told me he was cancelling car is unable to cancel reservations and it was up to me. The agent TOLD ME HE WAS CANCELLING IT! Lie #2. Still trying to get a refund. Call every week because each time I am told it takes 5-7 days for response. OK its 2 months now!!! We will NEVER rent a car from Hertz again. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! Lesson #1 - ALWAYS READ THE CONTRACT.
