    Roaches in our car
    Nyssa B.

BEWARE THESE CARS HAVE ROACHES! Think you're going to have a relaxing vacation? Think not. We ended up leaving the airport drove a couple hours to our destination only to discover a roach crawling up my leg. Very frightening experience, somewhat dangerous. We luckily found a roach trap at hotel and placed in car only to discover the next day around 20 roaches stuck in trap. One or two would be normal but 20 roaches just over night is a roach infestation. This car should be condemned! I will never be using hertz again.

Booked reservation thru CapitalOne Venture card - Hertz, one of the perk is Gold member status - which entitles walk straight to pick vehicles on the first row labeled by Gold as default. It's really like checking out a book from a library, except, this is a full sized vehicle! I am not used to the flow, but I can start to love it! The last time I had a car rental in Cancun was an hour wait in line inside a trailer, and scammed by sales associate (not uncommon in Mexico). That was a no star. Back to Hertz - Kahului airport, this is a world class facility, to/from terminal via tram. A very high traffic area but empty out quickly throughout the day. Funny some review rate Kahului as second to the worst small airport in US, last place been Tom Bradley international. Both are very up to date, relatively speaking! This is a five star review, for employee Uncle Richard (nickname called by his peers). I lost my prescription sunglasses when returning the rental, I went back to the returning station about 20 minutes later, the car has long gone to car wash, back to the Gold member row and ready to be rented out. Uncle Richard, with much Aloha, first rushed to car wash department when I show him picture of the vehicle, then broadcast to his peer to locate the car. No where to be found on site... Finally, Uncle Richard said, our last chance before the car gets picked by another customer heading out the gate. I followed him and saw the car, full of passengers, about five vehicles before checking out! Uncle Richard politely asked if we can search the car for lost item. The family of five was about to get off the car and lady in the passenger seat hold up my sunglasses and asked if that is it! An exclamation mark to end my joyful story and journey to the next destination. Hertz at this location deserves better review, and recognize people are so friendly and helpful on islands of Hawaii. Mahalo!

However, due to my experience on the…read moremainland with Enterprise (via my dealership service advisor), I decided to break from the usual. New pro tip, rent your car via Costco Travel. You get your pick of companies (Enterprise!) and vast auto selection that were quite reasonable. I nervously booked two weeks prior to leaving for Maui (OGG Kahului). But it turned out to be easy peasy once I landed. 1. Take a few free magazines and maps from the airport kiosks - they're helpful and has discounts too. 2. Take the tram across the street from baggage claim to the centralized rental car hub. 3. Shocked as there was no line as I approached the Enterprise customer service desk! Very personable individual who went through my contract and options. I declined additional insurance coverage, because my policy back home had me covered. I did opt for the prepaid gas (back on 8/26/25 it was $4/gallon). The new compact I had was so economical, I only spent an additional $30 before returning it on 9/2/25 slightly above E. Just make the best decision for your holiday needs. Note: Heed the warnings about driving in appropriate areas while on the island. I did not take my new compact off roading on unpaved, rugged routes! 4. I went to the second floor where I was greeted by another Enterprise person who pointed out the cars I was able to select from. Loaded the luggage into the trunk, took a 360 degree photo of the vehicle & license plate just in case, and familiarized myself with the car features. 5. Drove to the checkout gate where another airport person (who had just returned from my home state visiting family) finished off the car rental process and off on my merry way. 6. Returning to the airport, give yourself ample time to deal with OGG logistics. I followed the signage for car rental return. I drove to the appointed drop off area, got the vehicle checked back in without any issues, rode the tram back to the terminal, cleared the TSA and US agricultural checkpoints, and received my Enterprise receipt by email by the time I was at my departure gate/waiting area. Super customer service across the board from the OGG/Kahului Enterprise staff on 8/26/25 and 9/2/25. Sometimes one has to break from the usual and get pleasantly surprised. Aloha and mahalo!

When I got there, the employees in the garage area were friendly and helpful, pointing me to the row of vehicles from which I could choose. While I had the car, I realized that the key fob lock/unlock button wasn't always functioning, though I was always able to lock and unlock the vehicle by using the door handle button. I mentioned this when I turned the vehicle in, and they credited me for a day's rental for my trouble--something I didn't even ask for. Returning the car was simple, quick, and easy. The charges came through to my credit card exactly as they should have. I would easily do business with Alamo at this airport again based on my experience.

The line was very long, and finally they added more staff. It was finally my turn, and the girl tried to sell me a jeep for an extra $20/day, which I politely declined. She then sighed, her attitude seemed to change, and said something along the lines of "let me figure out which car I can get you" (was supposed to be Toyota Corolla or similar - prepaid via Costco package). Her tone felt like maybe no cars were left. After a few minutes, she handed me the Budget packet with car license # and type of vehicle on the booklet, informed me of the location where to find the car, and sent me on my way. We started driving out of the Budget garage, but the QR code wasn't working to open the gate. This man (who did not smile ever and literally hated his life - it was obvious) was extremely rude when I told him our QR code is having issues. He then goes "you're in the wrong car" to which I said, the girl told me to get this exact car from the location we found it. He took ~20min (felt like an eternity and stressful when everyone pulls up behind us and realizes we're stuck) looking into why it wasn't working. Either the girl wrote down the wrong license, or a Budget member put the wrong car in the spot. She wrote license YAR333 Nissan Altima but we had YAR332 Nissan Altima. The man kept blaming us and did not take any accountability. ZERO customer service. Even when the gate finally went up, he said absolutely nothing to us. We had to say, ok sooo we're good to go? Super curt response. Miserable man. Doesn't deserve the job. If the Budget girl wrote the correct license plate, or if the Budget person who parked the car in the spot chose the correct car, we would've saved almost 45min of agony and frustration on our first wedding anniversary trip. However, dropping the car off was a great experience and smooth sailing. If not for that, would give one star.

Normally that might sound great, but we had never driven a Tesla before and nobody at Budget bothered to explain anything. I have Fastbreak, so basically they just told us to go find the car. Our receipt was sitting on a board and that was pretty much the entire interaction. No explanation of how the car worked, how to charge it, or anything else. We ended up having to Google things constantly just to figure out how to operate the car. I eventually found a Budget employee and asked about charging. He asked where we were staying, and when I told him the Hilton, he said, "Oh yeah, they have chargers." Great! Except when we got to the other side of the island, we discovered there was no charging adapter in the car, so we couldn't use the chargers at our Hilton property. Because charging elsewhere takes forever, we ended up having to use Tesla Superchargers four different times just to make sure we had enough charge for the road trips we had planned. That added a lot of unnecessary hassle to our vacation. If I had known beforehand that I was going to be given a Tesla with no adapter and absolutely no instruction on how to use it, I would never have rented this car. And the car itself wasn't exactly impressive. It was extremely dirty, had huge gaps between some of the body panels, and the seats were incredibly uncomfortable. My back hurt pretty much the entire time we had it. The biggest problem, though, was the lack of help from Budget. Every time we tried to get assistance, it felt like we were being brushed off. I don't blame the Tesla itself for everything--I blame Budget for handing us a car we had never driven before without explaining anything, providing no charging adapter, and then essentially leaving us to figure it all out ourselves. For a week-long vacation rental, this was way more hassle than it was worth. If you're booking a Staff Selection car at OGG, be prepared for the possibility of getting a Tesla and being completely on your own.

She prepaid and received confirmation for a Jeep for two days at $356.83. I made a separate reservation for a Jeep for two days at $344.33 and chose to pay at the counter, locking in the price and confirming the vehicle. The next day, Sixt cancelled her reservation and refunded her. That made me uneasy. Our entire weekend was built around having a car. Hotels. Reservations. Timing. On 02/12/2026, I called to make sure mine was solid. I was told clearly that my Jeep was confirmed for two days at $344.33. When we arrived to pick up the car, everything felt normal. Then the screen turned toward me before the charge was processed. $2,252.34. I honestly thought it was an error. It was not. Six times the price I had confirmed. Six times the price I had called to double check. I had traveled nearly an hour and spent almost $80 in Uber fees to get the rental office. I had planned our entire weekend around having a vehicle. The Sixt corporate team had quietly increased the cost of the reservation due to the holiday weekend and left the service counter to deal with me and my wife. The team at the counter was outstanding. They did not create the problem, but they had to manage it. The only way they could get us into a car in that moment was to process the rental at the full $2,252.34 and then submit a refund for the difference back down to the confirmed rate. That was the best option available to them. We were fortunate that we could temporarily absorb a $2,252.34 charge while waiting for a refund. Many families cannot. My wife and I have used Sixt for years. When we were younger and just starting to travel together, Sixt was our company. You helped us create some of our earliest travel memories. That is why this hit the way it did. Roelen, the sales agent helping us, is the reason we did not leave angry. Ikaika, the branch manager, is the reason it did not escalate further. Not every manager stands behind their team when something like this happens, and that mattered. They protected your brand in that moment. They protected our experience. They protected the island. They turned what could have been a devastating start to our visit to the island into a manageable inconvenience. As we were walking to the car, Roelen ran out to us with two water bottles for the long drive back. He did not have to do that. That is the level of care your teams are working tirelessly to deliver. That is the standard they are trying to uphold every single day. But when customers are blindsided by pricing like this, corporate decisions are undercutting the very people on the ground who are fighting to represent your brand well. Your frontline teams are doing everything they can to build trust, and policies like this are quietly tearing it down behind them. Policies like this will quietly cost you families. Some will walk away and never say a word. Some will pay it and never come back. This is not how loyalty survives.
