I take my dog to HVH for grooming. Catia is a fantastic groomer. My dog comes out smelling and looking like a queen. I found out HVH has grooming services from admiring my neighbor's dog and I have been going to HVH since. Catia's work speaks volumes. I have just started taking our 3 little kittens to Dr Kevin. We had only had them for 1 week when one of our little ones became extremely ill. Dr Kevin worked with me daily for 2 weeks to save his life. I looked up his illness and here is a very low chance of survival for even an adult cat let alone a kitten. But here we are 2 months later and he is thriving. Yes, it was costly, but I took on the responsibility of caring for this little creature and that means medical attention as well. As a first time client I was not impressed when Dr. Kevin gave me a $1,000. estimate for what he thought my female Dobe needed. I took her in for vaginitis, he showed me bacteria was present in her urine. She has been on Clavamox for 12 days and is not showing relief. Then he guaranteed me my dog was going to "shit spaghetti" because she had been eating horse poop for 6 mos. He gave me medicine for the tapeworms and other worms that never ever showed themselves in her poop. I couldn't do everything he recommended and I'm pissed at myself because I agreed with $700. worth of it. I have transferred my records to another practice. Can't afford Dr. Kevin. PS - I was surprised I was able to get an appointment so quickly, then surmised everyone else is on to the price list besides me and is going somewhere else. Most good vet practices have at least some other patients in the waiting room. read more

This is by far the best place to take your pet for all of their needs. They have been so wonderful to my cat from needing an emergency same day appointment, updating vaccines, preventive flea medication, as well as top notch grooming.There is separate entrance for dogs and cats. The staff is compassionate towards their job and it shows by how they care for the animals. read more

BEWARE , Be SMART , EDUCATED YOURSELF, it's NOT insulting to second guess, , do not let the vet make you feel horrible , also this specific veterinarian MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR neglectful , in a sense the vet is neglectful etc. When your given the estimate which is the actaul bill it's always hundreds to thousands of dollars, you have to be realistic and ask why, u will get some attitude but be unbothered. If your pet is not receiving full exam dispute it, know your pets rights , speak up don't have regrets, Kevin is like a good salesman vs good veterinarian from what I observed he has the behavior traits including assertiveness with an outgoing personality, flexibility, people person, achiever. think about a veterinarian traits patience, honesty, integrity, trust, having an open mind, Learnability, respect, self awareness. Think . brief description of what should happen during Preventive care , Wellness exam ,office visit, depending on the vet all should mean the same especially if there is general fee for the visits which is an "office visit". We as parents , should expect the following At the least , unless they are like a drive through having a menu of prices. Now office visit and what is to happen for every pet, vet should start with a head to toe exam, a good exam should include taking the temperature, examination of the pets skin and coat , the vet should inquire regarding the pets diet , flea and tick regime, heart worm etc , note a question vs selling onsite pet food, products , "every vet believes in different products ask why his product is the best" the pets ears should be examined, every good exam includes using the stethoscope against the chest listening to lungs and paying CLOSE attention to the heart, a good vet should be able to detect any issue by just listening to the pet and owner, the vet should perform a careful exam of the abdomen, again many potiential issues are able to be heard by a qualified vet, good exam should include exam of the teeth , the mouth harbors infections the vet should be able to observe infected gums, loose teeth, objects stuck , tumors , really all sorts of surprises, again a close inspection of the eyes obviously having the special tools , many potiential issues again can be detected by just looking , the paws and toe nails should be examined and if nails are long be cut, again by good vet should be able to see pad injuries, by just looking. For this veterinarian the exam price 56 or 57 , testing beyond the office visit exam ask why what they heard or observed, if you cannot afford the extra fees rescheduled, blood work is important in some cases and is a great idea to have yearly but should blood work cost $400 ? for in-house HEMO profile , Thyroid test, 4dx snap test , CBC profile. Do your research depending on the hospital or clinic range 200-300 dollars for complete test, are options on how the blood is analyzed given. my Experience, I trusted this vet with our pet, I spent around 2,000 7 month period this was for labs, xrays, meds beyond belief, for a young tiny sick dog , Upon a reviewed of records second opinion, and general discussion with other pet owners. I was clearly misinformed, my little one misdiagnosed, bloodwork hopeless not explained and now because of the misinformation lack of honesty patience and trust my little one passed on, not without being in pain for months due to Dr. Kevin Schengrud this veterinary hospital they clearly lack general compassion and care, the vet seems very focused on quick exams, I did not receive a full exam ever for my little one, it's actually pathetic to be taken advantage of crushing my heart. We have options compliant to the state board, any vet association. Take away be smart make sure your vet is honest. If not feeling it choose as many until you find the best. When I had my pet rat, Dr. Kevin did surgery on her to remove the cancerous masses in her abdomen. He medicated her with an antibiotic that allowed her to live another month after surgery. I am forever thankful for what he has done for my pet, Sassy. Now, I take Chance, my Newfoundland dog to Dr. Sam and he LOVES her. He used to hate going to the vet, but now he looks forward to the love, attention and treats he gets every time we visit. She has cured Chance of his chronic ear pain and I cannot be happier! HVH is very good with follow-ups and they are accommodating to Chances' specific needs. They always have available appointments which is great in times of emergencies! read more

I've been going to Hershey Veterinary Hospital for 14 years. I don't even live in the Hershey area anymore and make the 60 mile round trip to it because I don't trust my pets with anyone else. I have high expectations about the care of my pets, and I've never been disappointed. I am free to discuss at any time any of my concerns with Dr. Kevin, and I have never asked for an appointment and failed to receive one (which is especially important to me because I have an extremely demanding schedule.) I highly recommend this practice, and don't make recommendations lightly about anything. l have done so repeatedly with friends and aquaintences who either are looking for a new vet, need a second opinion,or have hit a brick wall for some reason with their pets' care. read more

I moved to Hershey from Texas and was looking for a good vet to take my dog to. I asked around and decided on Hershey Vet Hospital. I was not disappointed whatsoever. I called their office and got an appointment the next day. As soon as I walked in, the woman at the front office was very welcoming and kind. She got my dog and me into a room right away. About 5 minutes later, Kevin came into the room and started his exam. He explained every part of his examination to me. He understood that I am a medical professional and took his time to explain reasons I should or should not opt to get certain vaccines. He does not believe in unnecessary vaccinations/medications, but I never felt forced to opt out of vaccines I wanted my pup to get. He's an extremely nice and genuine person and takes what he does very seriously. Compared to vets that I have seen in the past, the pricing was not bad at all. The flea/tick and heartworm medication cost about 20 bucks more than going to 1800petmeds, but that's normal for a veterinary office, so I didn't mind paying a little extra. read more

We've been taking our pets to Kevin for the last 6 years. The office is clean and well designed, the staff are courteous, and the hours include some evenings and Saturdays. When our dog ingested my husband's medication a year ago, Kevin walked me step-by-step through what to do and asked that we call to follow up the following morning (a Sunday) so he could track Milo's progress. This week we took Milo to Kevin because he was limping. After a physical exam and x-rays, Kevin explained what he saw and what he was ruling out. I had a long drawn out explanation of the multiple reasons we won't use this vet but figured it'd come back on me somehow with my luck so let me just say this... Please avoid unless you are in the 1% and really don't care about paying for services that "probably" aren't always necessary, "possibly" having lots of "inconclusive" results coming back as an answers, and "occasionally" having services randomly being added to your bill that differ from the same previous visits in the past. Save your money and search for another vet that wants to save both your animal and your pocketbook from unnecessary prodding. read more

I took my dog there after he swallowed one of his stuffed toys whole! It was very obvious that my dog needed immediate care due to the fact that he had been vomiting often and not eating. After doing the x-ray we were able to see the toy in the intestines and the vet decided my dog would need surgery. He told me he could not perform the surgery on site, and neither could anyone else in the area. He said I would have to go to a specialized clinic in Gaithersburg, MD in order to heal my dog. At 9 pm Friday night I drove the hour and a half to Gaithersburg to the facility to drop off my dog. They decided not to do surgery immediately and see if the toy would pass itself. On Sunday morning they decided to do surgery. All in all the expenses at Gaithersburg totaled $7,000.00. Two years later my dog swallowed another foreign object (he was a saint bernard, so he could easily swallow many things) I suspected this was what was happening and immediately contacted my dog's new vet as we had moved to a different area. I took him to this vet, in Palmyra (only one town away from Hershey) they did x-rays and told me that they would need to do surgery immediately. Not only could they do the surgery on-site for me, it only cost $2,500 and instead of stapling him shut (which had destroyed his intestines) they use lasers to seal wounds. Had I known this was an option the first time I had to take my dog to get surgery, you better believe I would never have taken him to Hershey! Fast forward a few months and my best friend's cat is sick. He wasn't eating, and she was worried, after seeing what happened to my dog, that he too had ingested a foreign objet. She took her cat to Kevin because he was the only vet open on a Sunday. She told him she thought he may have eaten something. He did x-rays and told her he thought he saw something in the cat's intestines. Again, he told her he could not do the surgery on site, but rather she would need to take the cat to Philadelphia or Gaithersburg because no one in the area could perform the surgery he needed. He also told her if she did not get the surgery her cat would probably die. She called me as soon as she left the vet crying because she thought she was going to lose her cat. I told her to seek a second opinion before going to Philadelphia from the vet who had taken care of my dog the second time. We made an appoint with the vet in Palmyra, who came in after hours to take a look at her cat. Rather than doing surgery immediately or pronouncing that the cat may die, he gave him a Bromium test to make sure there was nothing in his intestines blocking him up. After an hour we got a call from the vet in Palmyra that there was nothing blocking his intestines and that the Bromium had gone through fine. He did give him an IV for dehydration, but other than that, the cat was fine. He said he probably ate something that didn't agree with him and he has been in the process of getting better. Not only did the second opinion save her a lot of money, it prevented unnecessary trauma for a sick cat. I will NEVER take my animals to Kevin. In my opinion he is a thief! read more

I have been to many vets in many areas and these prices were definitely up there. I have other pets and I know I will be looking elsewhere for their care. *Over priced and questionable service. We have used HVH for the past two years for boarding and general veterinarian services. First, the facilities are clean, modern, and convenient. However, we experienced problems regarding pricing and the management of our pet's health issue. The vet quoted us a price that was extremely expensive and I informed him that I was not able to and I was unwilling to pay $1,400 for a minor surgery. We contacted another vet and the surgery was performed and for $400. I'm not sure why there was such a large price difference. Unfortunately I never had a good "feeling" after leaving this vet. I always felt that I was being squeezed for money and at the end of the day this is seems to be the primary motivation for the practice. I understand every business needs to be profitable, however, it shouldn't be at the cost of quality care and professional advice. Bottom line I would not recommend Hershey Veterinary Hospital. read more

My 9 month old kitten, Marley, had urinary issues since he was a newborn, but when I treated it as a uti, and he continued to decline rapidly, I found myself in an emergency situation. I am forever grateful that Dr. Kevin was willing/able to see him almost immediately when I called, especially without his records (we are new to Hershey). He saved Marley's life; it was a urinary blockage that nearly killed my little guy. Over the course of the next week, Dr. Kevin went above and beyond, including dragging his kids out in the pouring rain one night to meet me at the vet to treat Marley. I've gotten to know him and the staff very well over the course of the last 2 weeks, and they are very kind and have the animals' best interest at heart. My job brought me to the area for about a year. Having an older dog, I chose to bring her with me. I was traveling back home each weekend with my dog and returning for work on Sunday evenings. My dog had a cancerous tumor which was discovered by my vet back home. Unfortunately, my dog became very ill and was suffering. After consulting my vet over the phone he suggested finding a vet out here to examine her. I had my vet send my dogs medical records here and made the appointment. The doctor and staff were professional and very thorough. I had to have my dog put down here, and although it was emotionally difficult to do, I know the right decision was made. When it comes to caring for an animal, I don't care about the price it's the quality of service received that matters and the staff here are first rate in my book. I was here 7/13/2015. I recommend this facility to anyone looking for exceptional care for their pet. read more

I've been taking my pets to HVH for over 14 years (4 dogs of my own, for starters). While I moved from Hershey 3 years ago, I still make the 60-mile round trip visit when I need - it's worth it. The facility has always been immaculately clean, I don't have to sit in the waiting room with other pets - which can be stressful for the animals (instead, I'm taken directly into an exam room while we await our appointment), the operating hours are AMAZING (to include Sundays), and I've always received trustworthy, exceptional care. Dr. Kevin is a consummate professional - as is his staff - and I trust him with my "fur kids'" lives. He is painstakingly thorough and answers any questions (no matter how mundane some of mine are!)respectfully and thoroughly. I highly recommend this practice - and have done so to dozens of times. Whether it be for my own animals, or when I've spontaneously rescued a few traumatized/stray/abused animals over the years and, I admittedly, have called Dr. Kevin at probably the most inopportune times and in a panic - but he's always been there for me. I can't say enough about this practice, and I don't make recommendations lightly - especially when it comes to the morale and welfare of animals. read more

Very expensive and uses a 'shotgun' approach for diagnoses, which means Dr. Schengrund just orders a bunch of labs and hopes to find something abnormal. There is no rhyme or reason to the madness. He does not discuss costs before performing his lab work and tests. The combination of the two will leave you, the consumer, with a standard $500 dollar bill for any complaint. As a medical doctor, I know poor care when I see it. My wife took our dog in and this was what happened to her. She got tests and x-rays without any justification...just a "curiosity". If you value your hard earned money and dont want to put your pet through multiple unnecessary exams then I would go somewhere else. read more

We are a client of Hershey Veterinary Hospital (HVH) for over 20 years with our 5 dogs. During those 20+ years, Dr. Schengrund, the owner of this hospital, has been our vet. We respect his opinion and value the care he gives and shows our animals. He genuinely loves them. Our large breed mix lived to be nearly 17 years old; I credit her long life to good genes and the quality vet care she received. Dr. Schengrund is always very responsive to our questions and concerns, be it in-person or over the phone. If he can't come to the phone right away, we know he will call us before the day ends. If we have an emergency, Dr. Schengrund and staff respond immediately. We appreciate Dr. Kevin's no-nonsense, straight forward demeanor. He uses available diagnostic tools appropriately: ex. running blood work prior to any kind of surgery/procedure to make sure your dog is in good health before operating. There is no charge for surgical follow-up visits (there are usually 3 of them) or suture removal. Dr. Schengrund has operated on all our dogs, removing all sorts of growths over their lifetime. At our request and the doctor's advice, growths were biopsed at an appropriate lab. Lab results are returned to the client very timely (as fast as the next day for blood work, or in the case of growths, 3 days). Dr. Schengrund uses trusted labs and re-evaluates these labs' performance regularly. HVH performs some tests in-house. Dr. Kevin refers his clients to quality specialists, when necessary. We've used two of his referrals (Internist and Dermatologist) and been extremely happy with the care we received. End-of-life care at this practice is loving and respectful in all ways. Staff and the doctor couldn't be any better. The office is extremely clean and the staff is excellent! A number of employees have been at HVH for nearly as long as we have been clients. Front desk staff answers your call promptly and with courtesy. You never sit in the cat or dog waiting room (there are two separate rooms) for long, if at all - traffic through the office is strictly monitored so no conflicts arise with other animals. If you compare HVH prices in total (annual and problem-specific visits), you will find prices to be competitive with other area vets, especially considering Dr. Schengrund's availability to his regular clients. He keeps office hours 6 days a week, including Saturdays. You may find him in the office on Sunday mornings if there is a client, life-threatening emergency. I trust only two area facilities to board my dogs; HVH is one of them. Safety matters are a huge concern to me because my scent hounds are runners and escape artists. HVH kennels and exercise yard are spotless and priced competitively with other like facilities. Staff has gone out of their way to accommodate my dogs in dire emergencies (we've had a few, unfortunately). Bottom line: we trust Dr. Schengrund's advice and care. We will go no where else with our dogs (except for recommended and referred specialist care). We've had 5 other vets prior to Dr. Schengrund - none of the vets and their staff have met our expectations. read more

We have been taking our two cats to Dr. Kevin for over ten years. Both (female and male) at one time (after I stupidly changed to a more popular commercial food which they loved) developed bladder stones. Unfortunately they required operations to remove these stones. I stopped that food and they have never developed these stones again. We had the stones in both cases tested and they were the kind which we would not be able to dissolve, thus they really needed to be removed. He showed me the xrays in both cases and it was pretty obvious that what was left in the bladders would have a hard time being expelled, especially in the male's case. Dr. Kevin is always patient, goes over the details and choices in all cases and possible outcomes. He is always gentle with my babies. I have at times questioned his recommendations due to the financial situation, but he has always shown that he was very knowledgeable and if there was any question, he would lets me know what we could expect if we chose alternatives. The only reason I have given four stars instead of five is that he is more expensive to use then a lot of other practices. However, though we are now on a fixed income, we have chosen to stay with Hershey Veterinary Hospital because of his and his partner's knowledge and care and the confidence we have in them, along with the cooperative and kind staff he employs. It is never difficult making an appointment, especially on short notice, because of his dedication to his job. It also may tell you something about how we feel about taking our pets to this facility, if I let you know that I live in Harrisburg and it usually takes me about 30 minutes to get there and another 30 minutes back and that is in light traffic. There are many other vets much closer to our home, but we choose HVH! read more
