I was Kevin's client for five years when I lived in the Harrisburg area. True, his practice is expensive- however, you get what you pay for. I was always treated with a great amount of respect there. My dog never had really super serious problems while I was his client, but he was always there for me with every case of worms- and with a hound, there were lots. Developing a relationship is important in Kevin's practice- vets tend to see a lot of pet owners that are unprepared at best. So, he tends to treat pretty aggressively, and order more diagnostics than other vets might to protect himself. If you disagree with him, stay calm, be reasonable and be assertive, and he will be as well. Time in the practice and not skipping out on regular visits helps this along. Plus, there are a few intangibles as a client of Kevin's. They have separate waiting rooms for cats and dogs. They price match prescription medication. And if you're a client, you will find no better rates for boarding. Bottom line is that Kevin's practice deserves a better rating than it has. I can't give it a five star review because of the price, but he kept my business for five years- that's got to count for something. read more

I will not be returning to this vet office. In my experience, the care here felt chaotic, unprofessional, and deeply lacking in basic communication. During my cat's appointment, the vet announced that she had a heart murmur, then immediately launched into a stream of medical jargon directed at another staff member--without acknowledging that I, the actual owner of the cat, was standing right there. When I asked how worried I should be, the vet told me, "Now is the time to flip the f*ck out." He repeatedly described the situation as a "sh*t sandwich," which was not only unhelpful but wildly inappropriate. Instead of explaining possible causes, symptoms to monitor, or any range of treatment options, he jumped straight to pushing a cardiology referral in Maryland. There was no discussion, no reassurance, and no attempt at actual patient education--just pressure and panic. I've since moved my cat's care to the humane society down the road. Their prices are significantly more reasonable, but more importantly, their staff is compassionate, communicative, and thorough. They take the time to explain what's going on, offer a full range of treatment options, and make sure I leave with actual understanding instead of confusion and fear. Horrible place. Charged us 200 dollars for tests that cost 130 at our regular. They misdiagnosed our 1 year old puppy with glaucoma and tried to waste hundreds more of our money by sending us to a doggy eye doctor in Norristown! Thank God we went to our regular vet for a second opinion where they confirmed what we knew - nothing wrong with the dog besides the eye infection we initially made the mistake of taking him to hershey vet for, costing us a total of 800 dollars. I called around 5:30 a.m. to explain what was going on with my dog -- she was acting like she was choking and trying to vomit -- and asked if I could bring her in. They said yes and asked how far away I was. I told them about 30 minutes. When I arrived, I called again to check in and was told to stay in my car and that someone would come out shortly. I waited about 20 minutes -- no one came. I called again and was told someone was "finishing up paperwork" and would be right out. Another 20 minutes passed before anyone finally came to the car. Once we were brought to a room and I signed the consent forms, the technician said she'd be back soon to do a physical exam. I waited another 15 minutes, and still, no one came back. Meanwhile, I could clearly hear the staff laughing, chatting, and even asking Alexa to play music -- all while my dog was distressed and I was sitting there worried sick. At that point, I told myself I'd wait another 10 minutes before leaving. The technician never returned, though I could still hear her talking outside the room. So, I got up, left, and took my dog to Shores Veterinary Emergency Center in Harrisburg -- the best decision I could've made. By then, the sun was already rising, if that tells you how long we waited. I understand it was early in the morning, but I would've appreciated at least some honesty and urgency. If you're unable to see patients at that time, please just say that. Don't leave a sick dog and an anxious owner waiting for hours with no communication. Highly unprofessional experience. 0/10 would not recommend. If you want efficient, compassionate, and quality care, go to Shores Veterinary Emergency Center in Harrisburg instead. They truly cared and acted fast -- night and day compared to this place. read more

We started bringing our German Shepherd, Rex, here when he was 10 months old and over time spent well over $20,000 with this office. The only reason we continued going back was because we thought the doctor 'knew' our dog and would be able to help if something serious ever happened. Unfortunately, when Rex became very sick, we learned that wasn't the case. The treatment approach was always the same: push multiple medications, antibiotics, pain meds, x-rays, and bloodwork -- no matter the issue. It felt like a one-size-fits-all protocol designed to maximize billing, not to provide individualized care. When Rex's condition worsened, we were given two options: spend another $6,000 at a different hospital (after already spending thousands here) or put him down. For a full-service veterinary hospital, that made no sense. What hurt the most was the lack of compassion. When the time came to say goodbye to our dog, there was no sympathy, no comfort -- just another transaction. It was clear the priority was not Rex's well-being, but money and volume of patients. It is hard to find a vet taking in new clients in todays interesting world but listen to me, you should try very hard to find another option. My poor pup took a tinkle on the floor and the vet said, "are you f*cking kidding me"! He then made a huge deal about it to his staff and me. I got reprimanded in the tiny exam/office space for not holding onto his leash. I paid close to 1400 for a neuter, some worming meds, antibiotic, and skin rash medicine. They charge you around 500 for an initial visit that is required prior to the surgery and then pull out a contract with charges and services you must sign and agree to the day of the service along with a hefty fee. To top this all off on the services a follow up visit is listed as "complimentary". Oh this takes the cake. I sucked it up and went here because I was desperate to get my pups balls removed which is the only reason I tolerated this unprofessional behavior paid such a ridiculous amount to be treated this way. My dog did heal up with no complications so at least this was not a hack job surgery so I can find something good to say. I was not surprised to see so many 1 star reviews for this vet. I've taken my dog there twice. First time was for a small limp she was having. The vet wouldn't enter the room unless I placed a muzzle on my dog. He stood there at the door way, almost like it was his first time on the job. Wearing a big n95 mask while mumbling. $400 later, and I get basic antibiotics and dog tyelenol for her limp. Along with advice to monitor her. They don't show you what your paying for. They bring you a receipt and the hand held tablet for payment and ask for your card. No breakdown of services owed. Second time I went. I went for a basic check up and yearly vaccines. Again the vet stood at the door way and would not enter unless I put on a muzzle. I asked how he would check her teeth, he said he could do it from afar. All while wearing his n95 mask and mumbling. He said if I don't put a muzzle on her, I had to leave. So I left. I guarantee this schmuck is a big time Biden supporter. He overcharges for basic services. He's rude to his customers and is not at all a dog person. If you want quality care, take your furry friend to Hershire Animal Hospital. Dr. Zhang openly embraced my dog. Was transparent about all the costs and was incredibly kind and respectful. Even gave my dog a few treats on the house. I will be going there every time while living in PA. Drove an hour on a Sunday for my cat to be seen as he was very uncomfortable, straining and throwing up. I said he was recently going to the bathroom. That this was all of a sudden. Dr wouldn't run tests because he was unapproachable. Threw a towel over him and said he felt a mass and they could sedate him but that would make him worse... I said he's not well of course he's agitated. How do you not know how to handle spicy cats?? Gave me Gabapentin to drug him up before next visit. I never gave it to him because there was no conclusive answers as to what was wrong with him. Went to another vet. They had no problem taking him back sedating him. Gave him an X-ray. Got blood work. That "mass" the Dr felt was sh!t and his bloodwork was great for a 17 year old. So if I would have listened to him and waited until Saturday giving the Gabapentin, he could have had a bowel obstruction. How can you be a Veterinarian and not know how to handle spicy animals when they are stressed and not well. Look up bubble face muzzle for cats... it's so hard to find reliable professionals these days. Other vet gave him fluids and has to go back for more fluids and we have a plan for recovery. read more

My dog, Desmond, is a sensitive senior. He was pawing the side of his mouth everytime he drank or ate. Despite my examining him, I just couldn't see anything wrong. I was worried he had a bad tooth, so off we went to visit Dr. Kevin at Hershey Veterinary Hospital. We take all 3 of our dogs to HVH, and I'm always grateful for their caring approach, concise diagnosis, positive attitudes, and clear protocol for caring for our dog's needs. Since moving to Hershey 3 years ago, I've come to depend on them for the care of our 3 senior dogs and I have never felt so confident and secure at any Vet practice. Dr. Kevin is no-nonsense, I like that. He is direct and comes up with solutions. He's also very caring and reassuring, I also like that. The entire staff exude care and professionalism. I have a one star simply because I could not give a lower rating. I went there to pick up a years worth of interceptor and NexGard for my 2 corgi's, and I was charged $960.00. I was obviously in disbelief when the girl brought them to my car, because you cannot go into the building. I told her I only wanted one box of each due to the price, but she basically refused to only give one box stating I needed to take the full year. I reluctantly paid the price only to find out from other vets that I should have only paid $400 at the most. I immediately started calling multiple veterinary clinics only to be told by several that Hershey is notorious for overcharging. this is deplorable and unethical! they are stealing your money!! Top notch service, friendly welcoming staff. Very clean, modern facility. Dr. Schengrund was very pleasant and thorough. I love the fact that they have separate waiting rooms for dogs and cats. They are still at this time doing curbside service, you wait in your vehicle until they are ready to see you. I actually prefer this, it's easier than having to try and keep my dog away from others in a waiting room or dealing with the noise of multiple dogs barking at each other. Dr. Kevin and his staff have cared for our menagerie of pets most notably our little shelter-rescued dog for over 12 years. We have also boarded our dog there on occasion as well. This vet is not one I would ever recommend. I brought my dog to be seen for medication refills, and my cat with an upper respiratory infection. I was quoted 1200$ for this visit. My old vet would have been a FRACTION of the cost. My old vet charged me 1200$ to keep my dog for 3 days getting continuous fluids, medications, and around the clock care. So this quote seemed a bit outrageous to me. If you are looking for someone who truly has a passion for animals, and are not trying to nickel and dime you, please look elsewhere. I was unimpressed with this vet and wish I had taken them to a smaller family owned business where they are truly there for the well-being of the animal and not the $$$. read more

We can't say enough good about this practice! We were only here for a week and needed to treat a long-term issue with our Beagle. As we traveled, vets wouldn't even listen to our problem and dismissed us. Once I called HVH, they were able to get us in first thing the next morning. The staff was very kind and accommodating. Kevin, the Veterinarian, took his time to listen and read the records from the dog's history. He didn't recommend any unnecessary testing and gave her the treatment that has been working to date. DO NOT GO TO THIS PRACTICE!!! Staff is very rude! I was initially advised that I wasn't able to go inside the practice because of COVID restrictions, but if the dog is problematic (which mine is), then it should be OK. I asked to go inside and was denied. It didn't make any sense to me, because of their statement on my last visit stating I can go in with my dog. My dog left traumatized, and took almost a week for her to get back to her normal self. As I was leaving the hospital, I saw a woman and her daughter walk inside with their Lab as if it was the norm. I was VERY upset at that point, but I ignored it. I then call the office a couple weeks later for a check up, and the staff was very rude and short with me. I have been nothing but friendly and nice, but I wasn't getting the same results back. They were dismissive and didn't allow me to talk. I understand if you're busy... that's fine, but how about asking to call back or scheduling a time to talk when you're not being a jerk? Strike 2 and I'm out of there! I refuse to go to a place where I'm not welcomed! I have been going to Kevin since 1993. Why? Because I have had 5 dogs treated, and boarded, there multiple times throughout the years. Every one still willingly walked up to and through the door since then. Every... single...time. That truly speaks for itself, and Kevin and his staff. How many dog owners can say that about any vet? It's natural for any dog to feel anxiety when going to the vet. They know where they're going. I've felt the same going to a doctor. The comfort level provided to both owners and their pets is phenomenal. I had to euthanize my 14 year old Corgi 2 days ago. she still willingly walked through the door and sat on the scale, despite her discomfort at the time. The true caring from the staff and Kevin helped me through it. So did his big hug. Kevin also knows his limitations and will refer to a specialist when need be. Been there. read more

If I could give this practice a negative rating I would! We had someone adopt a kitten from our rescue who ended up with a uri and was charged an exorbitant amount of money for the vet to tell them they had a "VERY sick kitten" and made her think that the kitten was going to die. When she tried to ask additional questions the vet was rude and unwilling to answer. They continue to throw antibiotics at her and recommended $700 worth of labs including FIV and Feljne leukemia testing (which is an outdated practice as results are NOT accurate in kittens this age). She was not offered fluids or nebulizer treatments, no education on boosting food intake other than having her buy super expensive wet food to try. Within 30 min of getting him back from her for some respite care and a second option, we were able to get some good intake on him by simply mixing some wet food with formula. Fluids and other interventions and he is completely fine- just in need of appropriate vet care. This practice is clueless and obviously is only focused on making money. STEER CLEAR! I am not even sure where to begin. I was helping someone get their cats fixed. They were cats that she rescued. I was completely blown away when I went to pick up the cats. I have always had large dogs and I know that going to the vet is not cheap. When the woman walked out today to tell me how much and handed me the invoice, I about lost my mind. It was highway robbery in my eyes. To have 4 cats fixed, three treated for worms and one with an ear infection was $3,000. Since I was not the one that dropped them off I was completely blindsided by the price. They said they discussed it with my friend and that she knew. I informed them that I did not have that type of money and their attitudes changed quick. The Vet got on the phone with me and demanded that I pay. He said that I signed the contract and agreed to the price. I informed him that I did not and I was not even there when they were dropped off. Then he said that didn't matter and I needed to pay. The bill got paid, but I wanted to do some more research. I called 7 different Vets in and around Hershey, I told them everything that the vet did and then asked them how much it would be. I got quotes ranging from $395-$700. So could someone explain to me how his bill is $3,000? read more

I only put 4 stars because we can't honestly rate the inside since we were seen during the Pandemic and were not allowed in. On the flip side, they continued their services (unlike many other vets I called) and met us "curbside." Everyone was kind and helpful and the Dr. was friendly and thorough with explanations and any questions we had. They also accept PAWS discount voucher's for spay and neuter procedures which was a big help! Our kitty did wonderful and they called to check on his condition while recovering at home. I really like Kevin he is a good doctor and cares about the animals however the prices are extreamly high and this caused us to go somewhere else after paying over a thousand dollars for what was a UTI and Kidney Stones. I know my two dogs will missing him as their vet but we cant aford it... the cheapest I have walked out of the office was 300 bucks. The bills are always a suprise because you never know what is being done and the prices until its to late. And the one girl that works in the evenings can be rude at times. Today will be the last day we go there. Generally speaking, the establishment is very nice and modern. It is conveniently located, clean, and accessible with scheduling. My dog was seen previously with a digestion problem. Some of the charges on the bill seemed excessive or unnecessary to me. My husband and I each contacted Kevin (the vet) separately to ask for a review of services and charges in order to get a better understanding. This was after the bill was already paid in full: we just wanted clarification. Kevin was short, rude and very insulting to each of us. I chalked it up to stress on his job or miscommunication, and gave it a pass. Today, I picked my dog up from lodging. The website advertised $23/night for a dog under 20 lbs, but when I got there, they charged me $27/night. I let the clerk know of the discrepancy, but she just said, curtly, "that's the price." When I got to my car and to my cell phone, I went to the website and saw clearly that the advertised price was $23/night. I phoned back to the vet office and told the same clerk that I confirmed that the price was $23. She said, "I TOLD YOU I would talk to Kevin" in a very rude tone. I said, "you did not tell me you would talk to Kevin; you told me that was the price, and then you didn't say anything else." She said she would get Kevin, which she did. When Kevin came to the phone, he yelled at me and said, "If you look at the website, you will see that the prices have not been updated for 10 years." I said, "Kevin, all I'm asking is that you honor your advertised price." He said, "Ma'am, ask at the front desk, the price is the price" and pretty much hung up on me. What business person doesn't update their website for 10 years? If they don't, how is that the customer's fault and responsibility to know that? And, since when is it ethical to advertise one price and charge another? I would not recommend using this service if ethical pricing and courteous service are priorities. read more

Poor people skills! Dr. Schengrund was ready to operate on my dog for a "tumor" on her side without even tapping it to see if it was in fact cancerous. After charging me way too much for bloodwork I aksed about what type of monitoring is done under anesthesia. Basically NONE. In my search for a vet that monitors and will treat low blood pressure should it occur under anesthesia in my 10 year old dog, The "tumor" began shrinking and the vets at West Lancaster Animal Hospital actually clipped some hair away and examined the lump. It was NOT a tumor and they suspected it was an insect bite. It went away over the next week. I almost spent $600-$800 and put my 10 year old dog under a risky anesthesia for nothing! Most pet owners dont realize that if anesthesia and blood pressure/vitals are not monitored that many animals wind up in renal failure weeks or months later. read more

After reading horror stories of other places around here I feel lucky to have found this place. By pure coincidence we stumbled across Dr. Schengrund's practice out in Hershey. They fit us in for a same day appointment and were very knowledgeable and courteous over the phone. At our appointment, Dr. Schengrund was patient and thorough, he even showed us the xrays he took of our dog and explained what everything was (who does that?). He's very personable and you can tell he cares about what he does. I am definitely a fan of this place. read more

I took my kitten here for several visits and everything was great. I had been using another vet for my dog who struggled with her as she's a very skittish dog; in order to see her again they wanted to sedate her. Instead I decided to take her to HVH and they not only didn't need to sedate her but they took great care of her. It was the first time she'd ever had her nails trimmed! The techs asked me questions and listed to how to handle her and did great with her. It was a stress free visit for all of us and I'm so thankful for their care. read more
