Among the most memorable was one on the Isle of Wight where the offering was darn good served with Japanese Kirin lager beer but truth be told this place is still the best. Drakes in York was our most recent and almost equally great. Kilkeel Pit Stop is king. Now it took me a long time but I've made the journey to Dolphin in Dungannon advertised as the big winner in NI to check it out but I disagree. Pit Stop for me. The fresh fresh cod fish served up was just superb and I really do prefer glorious cod. The batter was bubbly light and melting. The chips just perfection. All that was needed was salt. The food had a trace of greasy which is unavoidable. This was a take away visit but it does have dine in seating and it's cosy. The thing with all fish and chips is eat 'em when they are hot which in the case of this place is a very easy pleasure. The service is ok they aren't great conversationalists. Go Pit Stop.

Im sure no one can blame me. When you walk into this little restaurant, you are walking up to a counter and ordering your dinner. They have 14 varieties of chips, priced from £2.20 (small chips)up to £4.60 (taco chips with bolognese and cheese). There are four varieties of fish (i got the fresh battered haddock at £3.60) and fries and gravy for £3.40). The fish and chips were delicious. The gravy was bland (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). The serving was extremely generous. This isnt the best fish and chips I ever had, but I would put it easily in the top 3.

First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

But i have to admit HANDS DOWN this is my favorite place in the world to eat fish and chips. The twin husband and wife team that run this restaurant are extremely friendly and welcoming people. Its a small place that has several sit down tables to dine in. The fish and chips is one you have to try for yourself but for me its a place i crave al year long and a must visit spot when i return to Ireland. If you ever find yourself in the area please visit pipers and when done take a quick stroll next door and have a few pints at The Brooke Irish Pub.
