Washington Dulles International Airport - Dulles IAD airport: United

    Washington Dulles International Airport

When I still lived in Pittsburgh, we often flew in and out of Dulles for international flights. We…read morenever had any issues with TSA, customs, etc. Sometimes it's a hassle getting from one gate to another with limited time. You know, 15 minutes to get to a terminal on the completely opposite side from where you've just landed. That goes for any airport though, doesn't it? I give three-stars because though we never had any issues, there isn't anything spectacular that warrants more than an "ok/good" rating. Also, on that note, sometimes employees aren't very good at giving directions. Other than that, it is a lovely piece of architecture and it's clean. So, yay.

Welcome to the sprawling complex that is Dulles Airport. This airport handles a lot of traffic…read morefrom the DMV area. There is plenty of parking at various stages- from the daily lot right by the terminal to the economy lot with fairly affordable parking and frequent buses. Getting through security is relatively straight forward. But then comes the fun part- do you get to take the train to the A. B or C gates? Do you end up in the tiny cramped A commuter gate terminal? Do you end up in the very convenient and easy to access Z gates? Or do you end up in the D terminal cramped like cattle into an ancient people mover? Honestly, if you do end up in D and its not from an international flight, just walk down to C and get on the train. There are lots of food options as long as you don't end up in the A commuter terminal. The one really confusing thing for people is getting out of the airport. there are multiple levels to exit between the arrivals area, the departures area and the taxi/ ride share/ bus parking area. You really need to watch the signage.

BWI Baltimore/Washington international airport is currently undergoing some renovations, which seem…read moreto be making it more user-friendly and less stressful. The concourse has been opened up, and generally, it's spa to walk around, and it has some of the cleaner bathrooms amongst US international airports, which is always a positive. TSA usually moves quickly, with Waite times of 3 to 4 minutes being common with global entry/pre-check, and from the looks of things, probably 10 to 15 minutes at most nearly all the time, so long as the federal government is willing to pay its workers, on many visits over the past year. In spite of upgrades, it still has some work to be done to be a truly excellent airport, such as fixing monitors regarding bus, timing and arrivals to get out to the four parking lots (daily witches, indoor, express, which is outdoors, but generally faster, and a couple of dollars a day less, and long-term, which is a few dollars less, but with longer waits for buses and they generally less safe feeling a lot). Another grape is that iron probably 10 flights in the past year, not a single time has the baggage claim number been announced correctly when deboarding the plane, an issue I haven't encountered at other airports.

One of the best FBOs I've flown into; highly recommend flying into Montgomery if you plan on going…read moreto DC (and can't get into College Park). They are open until 7pm most weekdays, so if you want service...make sure you get here before 7pm. We arrived at 6:45 and a staff member with a golf kart met us (after calling them on the radio), showed us to our parking spot, pushed the plane back AND tied it down for us while getting our luggage to the gate. It was incredible. The FBO staff were super helpful in giving me the number to a few mechanics (spark plugs needed cleaning) on the field and even offered us some water. Parking is $15/day, but they were incredibly sweet to waive our fees for the entire 3 days with a top off. Usually they only waive one day with a 20 gallon purchase, but they were super nice to us! Getting to DC from this airport isn't too bad. You can take a Lyft/Uber directly to DC for about $40-45 (about a 35minute ride) or take a bus/taxi/Uber to the train station ($~10-15 for the taxi) and then take the train into DC($5). All in all, until I get the FRZ requirements out of the way to fly into College Park, I'll be sure to return to Montgomery if going to DC. They provided amazing service. There is also a diner right at the airport with has decent lunch and you can watch the planes taking off as you eat. Seems like a lot of locals go there.

I bought Welshie a flying lesson from Open Air flight training through Groupon for Xmas, which is…read morehow we ended up here. He always mentioned he wanted to get his flying license one day, so it was a good gift. I'm so rad. It was cold as a witch's teat and the winds were high. Our instructor was super affable and knowledgeable too. I had my camera ready and was set to snap pictures from the ground when the instructor asked me if I'd like to fly along. I was scared, to be honest, since Welshie was manning the plane, but the instructor has full control as well. It was a stomach-dropping, squeal-inducing, 20-minute flight and it was quite freeing. I did think I was going to die, though. Our instructor even said that the winds were so bad that he was going to cancel the rest of his lessons. Nice. Overall, it's a great little airpark and learning to fly is awesome. It's not cheap if you want to get your license--you're probably looking at about $10K when it's all said and done. I highly recommend trying it out at least once, though.
