One of our favorite farmers markets…read more We first came here by accident a year or so ago. We were on our way to family in Ocala early in the morn when i knew it was time to stop for some coffee(the wife doesnt do wel without her java). I did a quick search for a spot, and saw a dunkin nearby. I exited the highway and headed that way. as I got closer I grinned. I had never been to the Villages. My gal didn't know what that was so as we pulled up and parked she said, "what town is this". I just played dumb. We walked into the Brownwood square and I had to tell her. She really didn't know much about the Villages so I filled her in. for my first impression it was great. The farmers market wrapped around the square and trickled out to the side streets some as well. They had the usual thing you would hope for like produce and pieces of art made by locals. But it had other things you dotn see often like some more quirky artisans, multiple flower and plant booths, empanadas, and the one that hooked me, a both that had all kind of mushrooms to eat. We swing by here about once a month for the farmers market, and enjoy it every time.

The market features local farmers with fruits and vegetables, local baked goods, artisan foods, prepared foods, meats and fish, cut flowers, plants, crafts and more. It was a nice stroll over a couple blocks purchasing several items along the way including sourdough bread, quiche, honey, fruit and desserts.

But don't let the farm talk fool you. There's serious variety here: grass fed beef suppliers, fresh eggs, wellness drink makers pushing sea moss and charcoal, potters working live, pottery, kitchen gear, clothing, and trinkets galore. It's a whole ecosystem of real farm life. I felt like I'd stepped directly into that world without actually being at a farm, which was wonderful until I realized my outfit didn't get the memo in my very short mini dress. Cute as can be, but everyone else was in jeans and tees. I stuck out like a designer purse at a livestock auction. Next time I'm definitely dressing down to blend in. The market is bustling and packed with options. You can skip Publix entirely and do all your grocery shopping here, just cheaper. Everything's cheaper. This is one of my favorite things to do in Ocala. The market is only open on Saturdays from 9am-2pm, rain or shine. Other events are held here all other dates and times. I cannot stand the heat so I appreciate that the market is under a covered pavilion. There are some vendors that set up outside the pavilion because there is not enough room. The parking is free as well, with plenty of options in the surrounding areas. You don't have to walk far either. The market is extensive enough that you could easily spend 2-3 hours there. There are several food trucks you can purchase food and drinks from. Sipping Grounds is my favorite! They offer snacks, as well as coffee drinks, beer, wine, and mimosas. There are a variety of vendors, with many being staples each time I have visited. I usually stop by and purchase from the same vendors. There are several vendors selling vegetables and fruits, a farmer who sells cheese he makes, a seafood vendor, a vendor who sells dips, spices, and seasonings, another vendor sells oils & vinegars, bakery items are sold by several vendors, and usually there are a couple of vendors specializing in doggie treats. You can also sample a lot of these items, which is awesome. Of course there are vendors who sell jewelry, artwork, decor, pottery, etc.

Though I miss the farmer's markets immensely, and can't wait to visit their booth to pick out my own produce, I can trust each farm box to contain high quality, tasty, and safe organic produce. I just bought a farm membership for the upcoming season and consider it an investment in my health, in supporting my local food supply, and in supporting our ecosystem by eating local and in season.
