Helen's Park is located near a neighborhood library and YMCA center. We always park our car at the YMCA next door and walk over. It's very peaceful here when there's not a crowd of people (which there usually is - everyone taking professional photos). The running water flowing through the middle of the park makes the environment very tranquil. The pictures below are from a cold winter day and don't do the park justice, but in the springtime when the greenery and flowers are in full bloom, I guarantee it is beautiful!

That goes to show a lot of people don't know about this part because if they did, this would have over 2000 reviews like the side of it. If you're from Houston, I suggest you come by here and walk this park. Lots of Texas history. Lots of old homes. Just an amazing place to walk. I'm blown away that I've never seen this before. Thankfully, that I got to see it this morning. If you're visiting Houston and you're not from here, this is a must stop. Local or not this is a must check out. I didn't see too many homeless people hanging around so you don't have to worry about that other than that, though I highly recommend checking out this park. You can do guided tours and pay for that or you could do a tour by yourself and just simply scan the QR codes or download the app to get the narrative version of each house. Beautiful views of the city and the back of the nice buildings behind this park. I had no idea that old cabin was even right there in the heart of downtown with all of the other homes. Most of the "art" on display were made by welder Ron Lee, a more than 50-year veteran employee of Texas Pipe and Supply. A true artist-in-residence, Lee, who passed away in 2017, never exhibited his work anywhere else other pieces were made by light metals artist Mark Rankin. No new works have been added since Lee's death so now comes the rest of the story or in short why is this display of roadside oddities is so cool and turns the heads of every traveler on TX-288. The Eclectic Menagerie is "quintessential Houston art--rough, ready, and right there on the roadside for your viewing pleasure" and in my opinion simply irresistible and totally FREE. Just a reminder this is private property so although there are no "no "trespassing" signs that I could see it's important to respect the property so uncontrolled access continues for school children, little old ladies and anyone else like me who appreciates the utter oddness of walking among the legs of a sculpted steel spider as big as a house and other monoliths of gargantuan proportions. They say everything's bigger in Texas, I'd say this validate that...

We walked a total of three hours around this and other park vistas. Beautiful day/evening! Japanese Garden near by was nice. Also near by was a veggie garden. All finds of herbs, too! One is where we get Vick's vapor rub from. Smelled just like it! Loved the water fountains and even though I didn't get to go, there is a lake not to far from here. So much to do and so little time! I'll be back and plan better!

This place doesn't disappoint. Enough parking, there was security on site as it's not overall the safest part of town, clean bathrooms, and lots of picnic/seating areas. There is very cool unique artwork done by different artists scattered through the trails. Lots of unique designs you won't find anywhere else in Houston. The main attraction is the structure at the top of the hill. You can't miss it. It's a little steep but there are many different ways to get up there. It gives you a view of Houston and downtown you can't get anywhere else. A very calming spot that is sure to become popular as time goes on. Great spot to take photos and exercise. This is no doubt my new go-to park! Can't wait for more Houstonians to check it out.

Ever wish you could join Alice and the Mad Hatter for a spot of tea? At Evelyn Park, located in the…read moresoutheast corner of the park that is close to the parking lot, you now can. This amazing and incredibly detailed bronzed sculpture of the story book tea party was created by a local artist, Bridgette Mongeon, and was installed in the park back in April 2019. This structure has a 10 foot table with benches that invite you to sit for a tea party and take photos with Mad Hatter, Alice, Cheshire Cat and the white rabbit. This sculpture has so much detail from the Lewis Carroll's classic tale that you will find yourself wanting to stay as long as you can to see it. For some examples of the details, there is a bottle that says "drink me" kept in Alice's pocket. You will find a mouse in one of Mad Hatter's pockets. There are two buttons on the back of the white rabbit's jacket that has both tweedle dee and tweedle dum on them. There is also 150 hidden items that this talented local artist decided to put within this sculpture (60 of the 150 items are found under the table). I found a lot of interesting hidden items under the table, which includes the white rabbit's house and Humpty Dumpty. If only I lived nearby, I would come back here. On the day that I came here, it had rained earlier and started to rain again. But I still took photos and sat on a wet bench (which left my pants wet, lol) and wished I had stayed longer to find more of the hidden items. I would definitely come back to this sculpture the next time I am visiting the Houston area.

There's not much to do and it will take just a few minutes to walk through, but it offers a serene escape from the busy museum district. Update: Bell Park was once home to a Christopher Columbus statue until June 2020. It was removed by the City of Houston after it was vandalized for the second time (first time in August 2017) as a form of protest. The statue had been donated to the city by the Italian-American Organization of Greater Houston. In its place, remains an empty pedestal.
