Carley has truly created something special at Heritage Tonsorial! There are two shops, the one on Nostrand Ave (Classic Trim) being my favorite. You can create a profile and book online. You can also pay before you arrive which makes getting in and out very smooth if you know you'll be a lil' pressed for time. Although, it's my bet you won't be in a rush to leave. The owner calls me, on my birthday mind you, And offered to refund me my money but only after I deleted the post and goes on to talk to me about how it is people like me that annoys him....just because I left a review of the haircut that I received and that this is why he would rather not have black customers in his shop!!! Due to the current political and racial climate, I think it is important that business like yours, with owners who don't want black support, be exposed. What disgusts me most about this business owner is that he himself is black and literally told me, a black customer who spent $50 on a Bad haircut, that he doesnt like black customers. Very disappointed in my husbands haircut. Good thing hair grows but never in so many years have I seen him this dissatisfied with a haircut. He won't complain and say anything but I can't let it pass and have to share this in here. He was happy with the previous owner (Mark) but now he has a granpa style haircut he even had to pay for!! Next time take the time to really listen to what the customer want before you chop everything off. Confirm with the customer, for anyone else just make sure he understands what you want. I didn't even request a scissor cut, especially since they're a lot more expensive than a regular cut, but was given it anyways. Also, I specifically pointed out my cowlick to the hairdresser so he would avoid cutting that area but, lo and behold, it was cut. When my hair began to grow, my hair was sticking up everywhere and it wasn't a good look. I paid way too much for this cut and don't plan to ever come back again. read more

Cares more about reputation than customers' feelings or services. Never met someone who just didn't want to do a haircut when he could have said no on the phone before booking the appointment. I'll spread the word. I'd rather go to one of the boys in the hood and have me and my son treated like we are welcomed than begrudged, even after spending twice the amount for less than 15 mins and unfinished. So, my experience with Heritage Tonsorial was most of the same: give me your money 'cos you're leaving with your hair shorter! And don't forget the tip. (TIP, really???) So the point is that there are no good barbers in this city. They learn how to cut hair on YouTube, they cut a few dozen hairs, and that's it. They become barbers. NY. RE Heritage Tonsorial: 1. Great online booking system. I could schedule an appointment the same day. However, I was running late after a doctor's appointment, but the online website didn't let me reschedule (unless you do it 12h in advance) even though there were many empty spots after me. It's ok, not a big deal. 2. Got there. It looked cool. The barber (I guess Carley) looked cool wearing a hat and good-looking clothing. Jazz music. Good vibe. No rush. 3. It was winter, so I was wearing a hat and was sweating because I was running late and got there, literally, running. I took off my hat, and my hair was crazy. And dry. I said I was going to a wedding... but he didn't care too much. He did not ask how I wanted to get my hair cut. He did not put any water in my hair. He touched and moved my hair several times kind of "feeling it". He started cutting my hair with some "grandiose" movements reminding me Edward Scissorhands. Literally. There was a moment when he was cutting with scissors but not looking at my hair, and the scissors were just cutting in the air. He did not follow any particular order cutting it and he was not making sure the length was aligned. He relied too much on his thinning hair shears. As a result, see the picture. Also, I was about to pay and he came to me and finished shaving my neck. Was weird. Carley, without being charming and caring, had an OK vibe, though. So I did not complain. I just paid him $22 (+$5 tip.) My hair is pretty gracious so I cut my fringe at home and it looked decent. But it wasn't an exciting cut. It was a $22 hair cut. I found this place on yelp and thought to give it a try because it had great reviews. The vibe was cool and the owner and barber was extremely friendly but the haircut was below average. I ask for a baldy and a shape-up which is pretty easy cut. I thought because they advertise the shop to be a shave parlor I would get a proper shave with a single blade razor. Nope, he used a machine with dull blades, which left my with a shadow/low skin fade look. The shape-up on my beard was worst. He struggled to trace my lines and he didn't blend in the patches of hair. It looked choppy. And he went over the line so much it irritated my skin. It looked like I had a friend did it for free. But the cut wasn't it was extremely over priced. I won't be going back here.. read more

I was going to this shop for about 5 months and everything went smoothly. The barber tried to stick to the appointments as scheduled as much as possible, he did a phenomenal job with helping me transition from a Mohawk to a different cut. The shop was pretty clean and the price was decent for what you will pay in Brooklyn nowadays outside of "hood" shops. Unfortunately, yesterday he was running behind and I had to wait which was fine because I had to run to bank. Then Carly(owner and sole barber) asked me to wait for him to cut a white guy's hair who came in after me because "they write reviews." For those who cannot read between the lines, he assumed making the white customer wait would result in him getting a poor review online and to avoid that his loyal black customer should be a good sport and just wait. After yesterday I took off and will not be returning. I'd rather deal with the chaos of a "hood" barbershop or pay more elsewhere to be treated and valued equally in 2016 in Brooklyn. read more

I was going to hold off on writing this review because hair regrows, but what was done today is unforgivable. I've never been so upset after a cut. I've been growing my hair for about six months, having one recent cut since October. I have also been growing my beard for about four months with minimal trimming and maintenance that I do on my own. I was keeping a natural yet maintained look. I don't like unnatural trim lines all over my face. Let me preface this by stating that I went in for a hair cut, not a beard trim. What I received instead was a complete butchering. I usually like to give my stylist a lot of freedom when it comes to my hair, but this time I decided to be very specific with what I wanted since I had been so patient with growing everything out. It didn't seem to matter though, since Carley decided to start cutting IMMEDIATELY without even listening to me. Just as I was telling him I wanted to keep length on my bang, it had already been completely cut off. "Whatever," I thought to myself, "It'll grow back." I had only been seated for seconds before this all happened. The haircut can be forgiven, but what happened next can not. Carley started trimming my beard without even asking. Here's some advice for all of mankind out there; you don't touch another man's beard without permission, ever. This should be universal rule; law, even. I was shocked but rode with it since he didn't seem to be taking much off. Then, before I knew it, one side of my mustache had been completely snipped off, just like that, without warning, followed by the other side. Before I could even say anything, the electric razor was on my face, unnaturally shaping my mustache and beard. I had no choice but to roll with it, since snipping half of a person's mustache off isn't exactly something that can be remedied. That is what's unforgivable. It's not going to be possible to naturally grow this mustache out since it's been so heavily shaped. I'm going to have to constantly trim from this point on, until things look natural again. I almost feel compelled to shave the entire thing, after four months of patience, because it looks that bad, but I'm going to wait a bit and hope for the best. I feel like I was rushed in and out of the shop, and on a slow Thursday afternoon. Had Carley taken more time to listen to me, this could have been avoided. He should have also asked if I wanted a beard trim, or complete reshaping, before touching it. It almost pains me to write this review because Carley seems like a really good guy. I'd like to give an extra star but looking at my mustache, which was actually cut crooked, because cutting it to begin with wasn't bad enough, is preventing me from doing so. I planned to make this my new spot, but I don't think I can return after what was done today. I didn't complain in the shop. I even paid extra for the beard cut (let's just call it that) which I didn't want and tipped more than most people probably do because I'm a decent human being. Even though I'm not happy, I don't think Carley meant to do wrong. I just wish he would have listened to me before starting the cut, or asked before cutting certain things. I'm sure there are plenty of guys who leave here happy. Maybe barber shops aren't for me, but I'm used to at least being listened to or warned before large chunks of hair are cut from my head. If you do do visit Heritage Tonsorial, my advice would be to have a chat with the barber before sitting down. read more

Carly, the proprietor, greets you with a wide grin as you walk in. Classic jazz plays from the front desk. He turns his attention--intense and frenetic as Jackson Pollock without the seeming randomness--back to the guy in the chair. You nod and sit, content to observe Carly at work. It's fun just to watch. He clearly loves what he does. And he's good at it. After 5 minutes, the guy in the chair stands, grinning, and shakes Carly's hand. It looks like a firm handshake. A tip is given. Carly beckons you over and introduces himself and pours you a Scotch. From there on, you have such a good time and get such a good haircut for an unheard of price (especially for what you get), you go home to write a 5 star review. It wasn't just the Scotch, either. $22 and the promise of excellent company and excellent attention to detail. Run, don't walk. read more

I live in the neighborhood and was walking by one day and Kenny, one of the barbers was outside sweeping the sidewalk keeping the entrance clean and neat. He told me that they cut straight hair there, so I was like cool no need to go into Manhattan for a haircut and the prices are very reasonable. Finally decided to go and check it out. When I walked in, Carl and Kenny were beyond friendly and very gracious. Excellent customer service. The shop was very tidy and clean with some nice jazz playing. Kenny was the one who cut my hair and as he did it, I was quite impressed. It was like watching an artist at work while he cut my hair. The end result was exactly what I requested and to my liking. I will be back and am very glad that I found my barber. I have since walked by the shop, and the guys are always friendly and out going. If you need a hair cut and live in the Brooklyn area, you'd be a fool to not check these guys out! read more

Look if you're looking for a real master barber, come see Carly. He's the last of a dying breed. He can cut any kind of hair including my stiff, uncontrollable, wiry, Asian hair. If your looking to get a decent haircut at a Russian factory that's just trying to churn out volume for $15 dollars you have plenty of options all over the city, but Carly is frankly a huge step above those places for just a couple more dollars- and the experience you get is one of a kind- especially at the price he charges. He greets you when you come in, always has some good music playing, and he will actually LISTEN to you when you tell him what kind of haircut you want. We had a great place in Chelsea, but after we moved to Crown Heights, it seemed too far, too expensive, too hard to schedule after work. So I checked yelp and sent him to Heritage. The reviews are right -- this place is absolutely wonderful. Consistently great haircuts, better than what he was paying twice as much for in Chelsea. The atmosphere is comfortable and low key, and the barbers are just cool. And when my husband decided to grow a beard, they gave him some good beard trims that prevented it from getting scraggly. They keep him looking handsome, and he still doesn't know what "layers" are. Love this place, can't recommend it highly enough.
