I purchased a slab of Parota wood from Heritage and ordered five separate pieces to be built, including a live edge desk, fireplace mantle, and various floating shelves. I worked with Cup at Heritage who prepared sketches based on my ever-changing requirements and started building once I signed off. Cup was great to work with - professional, responsive, and with a problem-solving approach for challenging installs. Heritage delivered all the items on schedule, if not earlier. I love this place. It still is the best place to wander and find that piece of ancient weathered wood for that special project, or a beautiful rusty piece to put on the wall or out in your garden. They still have the nicest people in the world working there. I recently did a walking tour with Ross Friedrich, and this guy has a passion for finding wood that can be repurposed into an incredible piece of furniture or help something outside make a statement. I always spend about an hour looking at everything they have. I was even fortunate enough to have a visit from Michael "Bug" Deakin this time. If you look at my pics I have a photo of a painted caricature of him. He was a hoot. You should know everyone that works there act like family. They look so happy there. Great live edge options both pre-made and for DIY projects. Finally, pricing can vary. We got a great deal on our mantle piece at only $25 given we did the sanding, staining and install. But we spent just over $1,000 for a live edge table slab that they sanded, leveled and split for us. Both worth every penny and then some. read more

I was searching for a unique, rustic "barn door" to complete my master bath remodel project. After looking at all of the products online and visiting several local stores, I simply couldn't find anything that really "spoke" to me in terms of the design, finish and price. The barn doors that I did find, were all out of state and fairly pricey and the risk for buying out of state was too high. I did some digging online and the only "local" option seemed to be a custom barn door created by Heritage Salvage in Petaluma, CA. Although a 1 1/2 hr drive, I was willing to make the trek to check them out. From the first phone call with Teresa, to the visit onsite with the crew, Lisa and Teresa helped me locate and design the most beautiful reclaimed chicken coop flooring and turned it into a master piece. Knowing that I was on a super tight timeline to get the door completed before my husband arrived home from overseas, these gals exceeded my expectations tenfold. I'm so pleased with the outcome and this piece is now one of the main signature pieces to my master bedroom and bathroom design. Best of all, it makes for an incredible story as well. came here to get a large hardwood slab to make a live edge table. This place is like Disney World for reclaimed wood. There's 3 acres of really interesting lumber, slabs, scraps, etc. to browse through. I could've spent all day here if my wife didn't give me a time limit (so sad). There are also some pieces of furniture built from reclaimed wood, as well as helpful finished sample scraps so that you can see the color and grain of different types of wood after they've been sanded and finished (if you're a noob, finished wood looks nothing like it does as raw lumber). I have extremely thin woodworking experience so I had a million questions for these guys. They were patient and full of really great expertise. I didn't feel like I was talking to salesmen. I felt like I was talking to carpenters and people who really just enjoyed making beautiful stuff with wood. We talked about my project and what kind of look I was going for. They helped me narrow down to a few species of wood that would work best for me, and gave me lots of useful tips. they also have full service custom table making if you don't want to DIY. complete with custom made steel bases. or you can have them do part of the work. we just paid to have them use their CNC machine to flatten our slab (saved us from building a router sled and making a huge mess in our garage). great selection of sustainable wood, and the best part is their stellar staff and service! read more

This is a cool place to find unique items. The place is a large open lot with a small showroom. All over the lot you can find great salvage pieces, barn wood and other assorted unique items. The craftsmanship on the items they make seems to be really good. The staff treated us great, was friendly and very nice. The only reason I give it three stars opposed to four is the prices... This is a very expensive place to find salvage items. I still recommend because they have some really cool stuff and friendly people. read more

I recently made a Christmas gift for a friends restaurant using some "discarded treasures", I found at Heritage Salvage. I built a rolling sign/menu/planter cart at The Crucible in Oakland. The beautiful maple for the sign and the salvaged steel barn door track holding the LED strip lights and the redwood surrounding the planter box were all found at Heritage Salvage. The redwood is salvaged from the Krug Winery dance floor. I love designing and building things with salvaged parts. It often adds serendipity and charm to a project. The frame for the menu display is salvaged steel stair railing. The rolling base is a vintage cast iron scale base, I have had for years. The trellis above the planter is rock screen. Blacksmith Artist, Celeste Flores forged and power hammered the top scroll. Heritage Salvage is on my "scavenger" tour route and I often find cool stuff there, to add to my stash of stuff, for unknown future projects. This place, while it does take some navigating, has an amazing selection of wood. My husband and I are building a simple set of shelves, and we were looking for a board with certain dimensions. The staff was very knowledgable about their selection, told us about the types of wood and where they were from (we were looking for a salvaged board) and were able to cut it to our dimensions for a reasonable rate. The only reason this place isn't 5 stars is because the wood has now been inside our garage for a month and it still has large water spots, since it was stored outside and was soaked through in places. I know that this is what you get with reclaimed lumber, but it came to us very dirty and wet. It's taking a lot longer than we had originally anticipated to get the wood to a state where we can make our shelving. But the next time we need wood, we will certainly be back! I really dig this place and have spent many Saturdays perusing their woodpiles for hidden treasure, and indeed I have found it. Their slab selection is nowhere as good as Z&E in Berkeley, but the "never know what you are going to find" element scratches me where I itch. Notable discoveries include a piece of teak from their 25 cent bin that is now a picture frame, and a few planks of wood from the barn that originally housed the Budweiser Clydesdale's. My only complaint revolves around their seeming reluctance to offer planing services. Every time I have asked, they have tried to get me to leave the wood and come pick it up a few days later, an extra 80 mile round trip drive. When I protest, they have always acquiesced, but why the fuss? Despite the minor complaint, I love this place. read more

I made the trip up there from SF and was delighted by the place and the people. They did not have exactly what I was looking for but told me that they was a good chance that they would if i was willing to wait a little. And they came through!! Let me preface my review by saying that I have been looking forward to patronizing Heritage Salvage since I moved to Petaluma 5 years ago. Last week my partner, my son, and I headed over looking for somethings to move us along in our backyard renovation. We were greeted kindly and told if we needed help to ask. We were then led to a piece of material that seemed like a good fit for a table top. The woman helping us said she would be back shortly to pull it out. We sat and waited for an hour for her return. In the mean time she walked by us several times with other customers but never acknowledged us. Finally we could wait no longer and said we were leaving. She then promised us to take pictures of the slab and email us later that day with the pictures and accompanying information. Sadly, the email never came. While at the yard we had eyed some other materials and were quoted a price (by the same sales person.) Today my partner returned to purchase this other material that was in its same location and quantity, seemingly untouched since our visit a week ago. The same sales person was present. However, today the price of these materials had somehow tripled, yes I said tripled, since the week before. When my partner questioned the difference in price from one week ago she rather rudely informed him it wasn't the same product. Now, we do not claim to be experts on salvaged and reclaimed materials but it was obviously the same stuff we had looked at at week ago. I am sad to say that after two very disappointing visits, no reclaimed material can be found in our backyard. Though I refuse to give up hope I can guaranteee that we will head out of town to find what we are looking for. Because I am so disappointed in the service we received I know we will not be returning to Heritage Salvage. read more

They seem to be oriented more towards the high end buyer who wants to build with reclaimed wood because it's in vogue, rather than the person who wants an economically viable alternative to shopping at the big-box stores. What an amazing resource and the products are amazing - price range from an amazing deal to premium and well worth it price. I have so many things from here - garden beds made from old chicken feeders, a red wood mantel and floating red wood shelf... this old wood dug out from the bottom of a pile... such a deal and oh so well done - they built both, even bought a large painting that one of the workers happened to paint and hang i the office. I will support this company and place anyway I can including this write up because they have been just great. Perhaps the coolest thing they did was introduce me to Scott Hickey - the guy who installs and finishes floors for them. When I started renovating and old ranch - they recommended I talk to him. He came over and trained me how to save and store the wood, then helped me find a traveling mill - and we finished my own barn wood on site... Scott then installed 2000 st of floors, built me barn doors and furniture and so much more.... another gem from Heritage Salvage that will earn my support and spending. Go for a cool walk, great art, and some of the finest woodworking around. PS - I have seen large wood slab tables around Sonoma and Marin - this is the best selection, best prices (for what you get) and the stands are wonderful. read more

Heard good things so I went to check them out with an idea for a cabinetry project I wanted to pursue. I told them I had gotten an estimate from Home Depot before deciding I didn't want to go the traditional route. They told they'd get back to me with an estimate, yet made it clear that it would be much costlier than Home Depot (o.k.). They never followed through as promised. Apparently, the fact that I did not throw out the first number, but instead was relying on them to provide an estimate (after meeting in person at their location and supplying measurements, etc) coupled with the fact that I had consulted HD prior to deciding to use salvaged wood, was enough information for them to decide that I wasn't worthy or serious about their product. Finally, after repeated phone calls and trying to pry a bid out of them, I gave up on them. Only then, did Bug try to contact me and by then I had written them off. read more

I've gotten a few great pieces of reclaimed lumber that I've used in my furniture and they are great pieces but the service there is TERRIBLE!!! Cool local source to find reusable treasures, just don't follow their advice on who to hire to install flooring. I hired Scott Hickey on their recommendation and wound up with a new bamboo floor throughout my entire house with nail heads poking up through the planks all along the walls and throughout the hallway (even in middle planks). He was too busy to keep an eye on the installation at my house; the fellow he hired had a great eye for layout, but apparently did not know how to install at the edges where planks meet the walls. Nails should not be poking through and they are all over my floor. When I pointed out the nails to Scott he didn't admit there was any problem and blamed me for the bamboo I purchased -- which was limited due to the fact I had to work with his supplier. Don't go to Heritage Salvage for advice - stick to purchasing materials. read more

If you don't know about Heritage Salvage yet - then get on it! This is THE PLACE for re-claimed wood, building supplies, hard to find vintage items, huge redwood header beams, beautiful hand-made furniture (made from recycled materials), huge fallen redwoods sliced and breath-taking to see the veins on the tree, pieces of marble, fixtures from Victorian buildings, vintage doors, etc, etc... The owner's name is Bug (yes, Bug). He's a wonderful human being - you'll be hard-pressed to find a more committed person to the preservation of our environment. But it's more than that too because Bug will tell you a story about every stick on his lot. So you are going home with some history. How do I know? I bought a house in Santa Rosa that only had plywood sub-flooring. I looked into those click together floors....yeah, I hated them, a photo of wood glued to pressed-board....not my idea of high-class. I looked really hared for a re-claimed wood dealer and it took a bit to find Bug - which is a shame that he's a secret - because things like this should be shared! Anyway, I found Heritage Salvage and I met Bug - I explained my floors and that I wanted real wood in my house, I wanted my eye to wander down each board and not see patterns, I wanted the real deal. I didn't have a lot of money, so Bug cut me a deal, he then allowed me a payment plan (I can't say he'll do this for you) but he helped me out when I was in a tight spot. I now have 11" wide pine planks through-out my house - there's not one person that comes into my house and doesn't say "wow" - I also took the planks and ripped them to 5" wide and put those on the ceiling - "wow" my 1970's split level now has California history to it. My floors have what millions at Home depot are trying to achieve at 5 times the price....I'm so lucky to have met Bug and found Heritage Salvage. Go check it out - you'll be surprised and so happy that you are in on the secret! Oh P.S. I forgot to mention that if Bug doesn't have what you need - he'll find it! read more

i needed some windows and a skylight, so called around to urban ore, building resources, and here. i had not actually been to heritage salvage before, but i had been to the other two places multiple times. i spoke to someone on the phone (i think his name was brandon?) and he was so much friendlier and instantly more helpful than the guys i had just spoken to at the other places, that i decided to make the long drive up to get my windows here and glad i did! they had exactly what i was looking for, in fact there was a huge selection of windows and doors. plus, the handmade furniture displayed in the gallery is beautiful and a sweet little dog hangs out in there greeting people :) quality reclaimed stuff at very low prices + nice staff = a happy customer! read more

I've been there 4 times now and each time I find them rude and their prices ridiculously high. I priced out cedar and their was 4 times higher for reclaimed knotty vs fresh clear cedar. Wait, don't jump to a conclusion that reclaimed cedar is more desireable bc it's not!!! Overall not a worthwhile place. read more

Your best choice for reclaimed wood, and flooring. If you are looking for a truly green floor then go to Heritage Savage. Don't be fooled by other places that sell so called green bamboo which is actually epoxy infused bamboo usually from china! What you need to do is do your homework and get a recycled all wood floor from 100% reclaimed wood at heritage salvage. They also have the best collection of all kinds of recycled wood. In search of the perfect pieces of wood for the curation of Teens Turning Green's ultimate "green" dorm room (making a statement utilizing upcycle/recycled/reclaimed wood to build shelves), we sought out to Heritage Salvage. Heritage Salvage is without a doubt one of the coolest places I have ever been. Absolutely gorgeous wood, each piece with an incredible history extolled by a staff that knows SO much. Track down Heather who taught me about each piece that I was taking home from their stacks of magnificent treasures. Some of my wood came from an old post office circa 1920, some from a barn circa 1910 on and on. I learned so much about our community history from the pieces of wood that had been the structures so many decades ago and then taken apart to make room for the new. If you want to have some beautiful pieces for your home, their craft skills rival none. The work and attention to detail is incredible. But even if you want to have some simple shelving held up with old crates, the wood comes to life in a magical way in your home or office space.
