In spite of the heat, we enjoyed a lively group touring with a terrific docent at Farmstead Heritage Museum in Plano last weekend. Do Go Here!! This daily tour is amazing! Certainly one of the best we have ever been part of for a Victorian homestead and farm. Our docent was an enthusiastic retired history teacher and he loves this place. We are fans, too, now! Once a 360 acre farm, Hunter and Mary Alice Farrell built their home here in 1891 along Plano's Pitman Creek. After their daughter Ammie Wilson died in 1972, the property which had been willed to an orphanage, was eventually sold to Plano and the 4.6 acre homestead next to the creek became a museum in 1986. Hunter Farrell was already a wealthy man in the gravel industry. As each new technology or invention became available, Hunter Farrell wanted it for their home. The home was built originally without electricity or plumbing; but both were eventually added. The farm was run by a farm manager who lived only a few yards away and not by Mr. Farrell. Ammie Farrell Wilson raised award winning sheep and didn't farm the land either. The farm and farm buildings were well cared for though - perfect for becoming a museum. Outside and behind the Farrell-Wilson Farmstead Heritage Victorian home are a dozen outbuildings. The farm is planted cottage garden style with flowers and vegetables. They have festivities throughout the year with demonstrations and special activities. There are farm animals here year round. I was struck by how clean the grounds and pens were here. They had multiple chicken coops, two large adult goats, lamb and sheep pens, and a donkey; I didn't really smell or even see much manure. My husband LOVES donkeys. Pancho the donkey apparently loves people. He'd like them even better if they came bearing treats. The interior of the home is immaculate and temperature controlled throughout. The time period wall paper restoration is very impressive and all areas of the home are able to be seen. We thoroughly enjoyed the hour and a half tour. The docent was knowledgeable and answered everyone's questions. I highly recommend this experience. There are stairs involved. There is a fee to tour the home. Lights on the farm at heritage farmstead museum was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed our night here it's the perfect place to see beautiful lights and enjoy s'mores by the fire. It is the coolest Christmas event. I look forward to coming back again! The kids loved meeting Santa! I think they do need sitting area for the family so we can do group pictures! read more

What a great place! Admission is so cheap. Glenda and I enjoy history, so this place was right up my alley. Think about living without all the technology that makes our lives so easy. Sounds horrible to me! But it's so interesting. Think about living most of your life without electricity or indoor running water. All the outbuildings were full of tools from that time period. Lots of cute animals that made farm life a chore. The signs say don't touch, but we were following a tour guide that couldn't resist the sheep. We, and the sheep, enjoyed all the petting and rubbing! Such a fun time. We didn't get to tour the house, but we'll be back so we can. This place is a must. Do it! read more

Our family was in town for my hubby's business and the kids and I were looking for some museum or historical site. This farmstead is a great tour for kids. There is a real pride of ownership in the property. It's apparent that they constantly update props and decor. We paid extra for the Docent to give us a tour of the house. (Side note: we've toured many historical homes throughout the south but I appreciated how they had little toys/games/ or props in most rooms throughout the house to make it interactive.) Our tour ended up being 2 hours which seemed a little too long. I give the rating 4 stars instead of 5 because they won't let you pet any of the animals :(. They have sheep, hogs, goats, and a donkey but we couldn't touch any :(. Such a bummer. But certainly a great property to tour when you have some time. read more

They're super raciest. I mean come on how can u be mean to kids? They treated my two year old and my friends toddlers so badly. Every activity we tried to do, our kids were being ignored and I just watched them being nice to the white kids. I ended up dragging my kid out of there crying. Never going back. read more

They had a Pumpkins, Pinots and Pooches event for the Museum that charged $20 per person and $5 per dog. Sooooo disappointed it was terrible. Parking was in a dark NO Lights parking lot that did not seem very safe and well marked directions to it. Caricature artist promised to be there left early and last person to get one was the event director not us paying supporters who did not get one. No wine was available, or ran out very fast.... Even though that was in the event name!! The nachos and popcorn were OK for store bought, the only food available. For the $50.00 we spent we feel Cheated.. read more

This museum is gorgeous. There was a birthday party of children enjoying the grounds as we visited. When you visit, be sure to follow the trail down to the creek where the ducks are playing. It's peaceful and a nice walk. You will need to visit around 1 in order to take advantage of the guided tour through the house on the grounds. The cost is minimal. A donation of $3 is needed to walk around and feed the chickens and see the livestock. A donation of $7 is required to enjoy the guided tour. read more

Super cute farm, we attended a birthday party here a while ago. They had a horse pulling a cart ride, and music in the barn with food. They have a good amount of animals you can walk around and look at. Nothing too big, but they have classes on fridays for toddlers to explore and play. You have to sign up online before coming in. read more

I came here with my toddler to check it out. It's pretty cool, staff friendly, good place to come and have a picnic. I would've loved to take the tour of the house with the guide but my kid just isn't ready to sit through that. We had a good time walking and looking around. Today was Smithsonian Museum Day Live! where museums participate in free admissions. We were so excited that the Heritage Farmstead Museum was on the participation list. I have driven past this museum almost every day and have wanted to visit. Needless to say, Hubby and I were disappointed in that the free admission is only the Farmstead grounds. Both the Young House and the Main House were locked to visitors. A visit of the grounds equated to seeing a few farm animals including chickens, donkey, sheep, pigs, and goats. There are a few old vehicles. The grounds are nicely kept, but parking spaces are sparse. Interesting piece of Plano history. read more

So I sort of suck for writing a review of the Adult Easter Egg Hunt...at night, in lieu of the actual museum...but I didn't see too much of the museum as I dashed like a deer with my flashlight at dusk, in search of coveted eggs. I will say that the staff are all friendly, and the grounds have some unique items (gardens/ages old outbuildings, tools, and textiles). I was able to quickly observe a few as I advanced in search of my next faux egg. The museum has summer camp programs, school programs, and is available for rental. The event was so much fun (more eggs next year please!), and raised money for the museum mission; score! read more

Heritage Farmstead has hosted the CCCA Home Coming Pep Rally again this year. Always a good time, wonderful place to hold an event.

I love taking my little one to picnics here. It's always green, well kept, beautiful and it feels so peaceful. So many shaded picnic tables but we usually sit by the trees around the pond. My daughter loves the chicken coop with the baskets and the fake eggs to play with. It is very educational. The summer camps are a lot of fun and age appropriate. The staff is very nice. read more
