(Light weight emergency) I heard this awful sound coming from outside my work truck. Kind of like a grinding noise. I don't know too much about motor vehicles but I had a feeling it had something to do with the brakes. So I head to the nearest auto repair I can find. (I'm an hour away from home and it feels as if the truck is going to collapse.) I pull up to this place called Henry's Service. I explain my situation to the gentleman Lonnie, who was very busy at that moment. He checks the truck and tells me I need to replace the disks and pads. Unfortunately he's too busy and could not take me in but offered to help me find another auto repair. (Didn't have to do that) I'm stuck, the truck really shouldn't be driven, and I have to meet inspectors at certain times all throughout the day. It'll cost time and money to reschedule these inspections plus Id have to make the drive back. Lonnie goes inside his office and comes back out with his partner Frederic. They see that I'm caught "in a pickle" and decide to help me anyway!! They helped me get out of there as soon as they could. I've been taking my cars here for several years. At first it was my manual 2006 Ford Focus, which they kept in pristine condition, and now, a 2020 Mazda CX-5. The place seems unassuming, if not a bit run down, but Lonnie and his sole mechanic are truly the best. And you may have to keep your car all day there to get worked on and pay a bit more than other places, but it's more than worth it. I've never felt fleeced, and Lonnie is great to talk with. Plus, he randomly has the best handwriting I've ever seen? Anyway, I can't say enough great things about this place. read more

I've taken my car to Henry's for about 8 years and always had a great experience. Lonnie is incredibly patient, thorough, and honest. He explains to me the entire process they have gone through to figure out what was wrong, and then proceeds to walk me through any adjustments/replacements that have been made. He shows me any old parts that have been taken out, and (if possible) shows me the new part that has gone in. Frederick is also awesome. I've always gotten the feeling that they both genuinely love their work, and they're consistently friendly. As a woman I feel comfortable and respected at Henry's, never like I'm being talked down to or cheated out of money. There have also been times when my car needed a few things done, and they've told me which were urgent/which I could wait on in the case I didn't want to do all the work at once. The guys at Henry's Service are servicing of my car for the past 5 years. Lonnie is always honest, respectful and reasonable, and always did a good job. Professional, Fast, Honest, Respectable, Reasonable. Couldn't ask for more. At one time when my car was at service, I got stuck in traffic and couldn't make it on time before they close for the weekend. Lonnie personally dropped the car keys at my home mailbox, so I can pick up the car when I get home. At another time, the engine was making suspicious noise. I left the car at Henry's, they checked it out, did a test drive, and figured there's nothing wrong with the car. They could easily charged my a couple of hundred dollars for labor. they charged $0. Honestly, Lonnie is the only auto mechanic in the world I can blindly trust. read more

I too give Henry's Service a 5 STAR!!! Honest service. He doesn't try to get away with anything and understands if you are on budget so he tells you what you really should do, what he can do, and what you can live with. Since I don't work over in the East Bay anymore I don't go to Henry's. I wish I could find someone who is as good as Henry in Marin County. I hope you don't need any repairs, but if you do you can trust the service and commitment that Henry gives to you. Also check out his prices for Oil Changes and normal maintenance. I bet you will find he is pretty close to what you would pay at one of those drive up oil change places. read more

In a review from August 2019 someone wrote "Lonnie is the nicest car mechanic ever". Now I haven't met every car mechanic so I don't really like potentially hyperbolic statements but, in this case, I must say it may be true. I went to him today for my 2011 Subaru Forester. My wonderful 19-year old had hit a parked car mirror against our mirror, and the mirror was flopping around but unbroken, and the outer case that holds the mirror cracked most of the way down. He called his son-in-law mechanic Frederic to look at it, who then spent a couple of minutes snapping the mirror back into its socket and maneuvering the cracked plate so it looked like little had happened (I'd been too scared to force both of those things). So, instead of a $300 plus potential repair it was done quickly and I said "how much". He said, that was easy -- no cost. I said how about $20 and pushed it towards him. He just put his hands in a Namaste position and said no, really, no. Thank you though, no. I then asked if he could fix my air conditioning and he said, probably not till tomorrow, but I think Yee's service down the block by San Pablo could probably do it today. Yee did it on the spot. Lonny made no money from me. Most trustworthy, sweet guy. I'll be back. read more

They are honest, honest, honest which in my book holds more value than specialization. They made sure my car was in perfect order before returning it to me and it runs like new! They replaced the steering coupler on my Hyandai to eliminate an awful clicking sound in my steering wheel. They outlined all the steps they would likely need to perform and it was obvious they knew their stuff. Both Lonnie Basurto and Frederic Pras are great mechanics. It's survived two cross-country journeys, tons of salt and snow and two different cases of rats chewing on my wiring [damn you, Lower East Side!]. I wish I could bring my car here still! I love this place, but we bought a newer honda and Henry doesn't work on hondas. If you have a car Henry can work on, for god's sakes, bring it here. They're honest and they always stand behind their work. I went to Henry's Service a year ago or so for a new strut. Lonnie knew I couldn't afford to get both struts fixed, but recommended that I did get the driver's side done (it was bad, and other people had commented on the lack of shock absorption). It was expensive, but because of the job and necessity, and because I felt he was being honest about both, I got the one side done. I was very happy with the experience despite parting with so much money on my aging car. They were helpful and showed me what they had done and the parts that were replaced. They were the first place I called for a second opinion or suggestion on CV boot replacement. Unfortunately, they are unable to do that service. But I will patronize them again in the future. read more

Lonnie is excellent. This shop is right around my dad's place and I'm so glad he referred me. Lonnie is honest and thorough, never makes you feel uneasy or like you're being oversold and i felt safe knowing he took care of everything. i went several months ago and haven't had any problems since. We had some issues figuring out what was going on with my battery and after talking to a few people thought it might be a bigger issue. Frankly he could have made it to be a much bigger deal but he assured me it was not, gave it a slow charge, and cleaned it up for a fair price. he dealt with some smaller issues i'd been having and i was out of there fast and for cheap. he also called frequently to update me. This is a solid independent garage. Brought my car in as it was having intermittent trouble starting. Initially brought it in and they worked it up, but could not find the source of the problem. They suggested driving it until the problem resurfaced. They didn't charge me for the diagnositcs. The problem resurfaced, again, so I brought it in a second time, and they tried to diagnose and repair it, but when I picked it up, and tried to drive away, the car would not start. I left it with them for almost a week for additional troubleshooting. With additional diagnositcs (at no charge of course), they finally were able to find the source of the problem. It was difficult to find the source, but they eventually found it, and now the car runs fine. Rates are similar to that of other indepenent garages which typically are more expensive than a service station and less than a dealership. They take their time, only repair what is necessary. The car has been to several other garages in the past, and mechanics always tell me that my car needs this and that. Henry's is the opposite; they tell me to get things done that are essential, and consider the exiting value of the car, whether or not some repairs are necessary or superfluous, and don't try to oversell anything. Took my wife's car to Henry's and They couldn't fix it. he had it for a week and tried several things and nothing worked. They spent several hours on it and what did they charge me? NOTHING! He was totally honest At first he gave me an estimate for $500 to replace the distributor and a few other things. When it didn't solve the problem, he simply said I should take it to someone that specializes in Hondas. He also replaced my fuel filter but still charged me nothing.Most honest and forthright mechanic I"ve ever met. I took it the dealership and they couldn't fix it either but charged me $180 were totally rude and condescending. read more

I needed an overdue 90K service for my Saturn, and their quote was the most reasonable--and he said it included tax and all that stuff that often gets added on later. When I went in, Lonnie requoted the same price so there was no confusion. Unfortunately there was an issue with the car, requiring more work and cost, but Lonnie explained everything thoroughly and was generally the nicest mechanic I've ever experienced. When I came to get my car, he showed me the parts that had been replaced and went over the invoice with me. Sure, it's not a fancy place at all, but it's near a nice natural food store if you're stuck in the area and walkable from North Berkeley bart. Give them your business! read more

Lonny is the trustworthy best: he shows, in actions, interest in my benefit aside from his. Even though there was no money in it for him, he checked (in the rain) out of curiosity to look at my car. He found a problem two other mechanics missed, a major issue that he, as always, took the time to explain. One other shop, specialists with fancy equipment and printouts, said there was no problem, and I said to try again. They made another test and found what Henry's Service originally found. Lonny said the people who sold me the car had done a makeup job on it and was genuinely invested on my behalf, even though there was no money in it for him. Where Oakland Auto Works gave me a big expensive list of things to do, Henry's shop said I didn't have to, and showed why. Then, rather than say the other people were dishonest, he saved face for them, saying, "These things are more subjective than we might like to think." He and his mechanic are educated and dear, sincerely, in a more genuine way than, for example, the Texaco oil change that is much cleaner but uses a script for the technicians to say, "thank you" "your welcome" as part of a show, and doesn't go by the car's individual condition but by statistics. Or, like the Toyota dealership that dust-mops the smooth driveway and wears ties. I don't want to pay for an irrelevant display. Henry's is real, "good people," even giving me advice after I moved and they wouldn't have my business anymore. I'm thinking of driving the extra hour just for them. Twice, by getting their second opinion, they saved me thousands of dollars, and he explained everything. I said he should read the many other rave reviews about him, and he said it would give him a big head. He spent time to chat with me about what cars are good, mechanically, to buy. Sometimes I had trouble contacting him, but he thought that was not the norm. Highest recommendation. A hiding gem. read more
