Mr. Ali Gardizi of Auto Plus is an articulate skilled mechanic with decades of experience in diagnosing and repairing Audis and Volkswagens. Our Auto Plus story: At around 90k/miles our 2014 Audi A7 began developing multiple oil and coolant leaks. Over time the leaks worsened, requiring weekly topping up. The dealer's repair estimate exceeded the value of the car, X 2. Yet the car still drove strong. These cars have numerous plastic components (housings, pipes, etc.) which have a limited lifetime (before cracking, splitting, leaking). And Audi motors fill the engine bay completely, making it nearly impossible to diagnose many issues (including leaks) without some investigative disassembly. At our first meeting we discussed the dealer's diagnosis/cost estimate. Mr. Gardizi examined the car and explained that there are several other components (not identified by the dealer) which could be the source of the oil and coolant leaks. To definitively confirm all leak sources required removing the super charger from the top of the engine. I agreed and authorized two hours labor cost to remove and re-install the unit. Important - With the unit removed it was clear the leaking components were not those suggested by the dealer. Instead there were several other components leaking oil through cracked housings and failed seals and coolant leaking from plastic pipe joints. Auto Plus produced an estimate which was one third the dealers price. The work was performed in a timely manner at the estimated price. The initial removal of the super charger was not billed as it was required by the subsequent repairs. read more

The 2005 Lexus ES330 I gave to my daughter suddenly died in the middle of the street late Friday. She had it towed to Auto Plus on Monday. On Tuesday, they told her it was probably the timing belt. On Wednesday, they replaced the timing belt but were unable to start the engine due to low compression and said there was probable damage to the valves. They quoted $7k to have it fixed and my daughter said she needed to think about it. I called my mechanic in SoCal and he explained that this was a "non-interference" engine and the valves should not be damaged from a timing belt failure. At his suggestion, he called Auto Plus and said the probable cause was gas on the plugs - just crank it until it starts. The next day, Auto Plus called my daughter and said it was all fixed! I gave 2 stars because the final price ($1500) was reasonable. Trying to sell her on $7k of unneeded work was not. BTW, all of the quotes were verbal - nothing in writing. Be careful! read more

5 stars for auto plus. I called around to a lot of shops and most wouldn't even touch my vw. I called the dealership for a timing belt change and they quoted me $2,800 in labor and $1200 in parts. I called auto plus and they told me everything out the door for $1,800! That's including an oil change, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, roller bearings etc. I dropped my car off at 8:30am and they had her finished by 3:30 the SAME DAY. This is now my go to mechanic for my Volkswagen. Great staff, honest and very quick. You can tell they know what they're doing with the Volkswagens. A few months ago I had my Audi brake system flushed. My service was excellent, timely and reasonably priced. The technician noted that I had a cracked cv boot and recommended future service. When my ignition cylinder failed a couple of months later (I couldn't turn the key to start or steer) I had my car towed to Auto Plus. The ignition cylinder was replaced and I had the cv boot taken care of. Again the service was excellent and reasonably priced. I was offered the broken parts and given a full explanation of the service provided. Ali and Naeim were friendly and customer service oriented. tldr: Honest, they do great work I brought them my 40 year old Vanagon that was having transmission issues. Early vanagon transmissions are notoriously hard to fix and expensive to deal with. Many owners will only bring transmission work to a select few with a long waiting list. My transmission seemed to be getting worse quickly and I couldn't wait. Luckily Auto Plus was able to get me in the morning after I called them. I'm so glad I did. First, they are honest mechanics. I came in thinking I needed a new transmission. But they found that all it really needed was new bushings and adjustment saving me a ton of money and stress. The work they did was superior. They made a 1980 manual feel like new. It's better than its been the entire time I've owned it. Any work that needs to be done from now on I will be bringing to Auto Plus in Albany. read more

I hope my review can benefit at least someone and not be fooled by Auto Plus. Auto Plus didn't do their work properly and was fraudulent. Here is my bad experience: My coolant light was on and I brought my car to Auto Plus. The agreement was to replace radiator, belt tensioner, pulley and oil filter housing gasket with original parts. Next day, I paid $1249.89 and picked up my car. A week later, my coolant light came on again. I brought my car back to Auto Plus again for them to check their work. The owner Ali said he found no leak in the cooling system, instead my car was "overheated with white smoke from the exhaust system" and "the head gasket was damaged". He insisted my car had all these problems before I brought my car in. His diagnose was leaking through the head gasket into the engine and out the exhaust. I kept telling him, I never see any other warning lights or overheated light were on in my car. He still insisted his diagnoses and started my car and tried to show me where the engine temperature gauge was and the white smoke he found from exhaust system. I heard some noise from my engine that I had never heard of before. My car wasn't like that when I gave it to Auto Plus. Ali insisted my engine sounded right and no noise. I heard the noise and it sounded differently than before. After more than 10 minutes, he still couldn't find the engine temperature gauge on my car. He then asked his friend where was the engine temperature gauge? His friend told him immediately, there was no engine temperature gauge in my car. Only when the car is overheated, the warning light will be on to notify the driver. The owner Ali left silently and showed his unprofessional behavior at the same time. He then kept explaining how my head gasket was damaged to cause coolant leaking and tried to avoid their mistakes. He denied the mistakes without any apologizes. He even told me, I can still drive my car, even though his diagnose showed the engine was overheated and head gasket was damaged. He said I can continue to drive my car some distances and pull my car on the side of road or on the freeway to take a break if I feel the car is overheated. He also said I can check my coolant and add coolant every day before driving. His responses were very disappointing and unprofessional again. I started to find solutions as I was stupid to believe my car was overheated and head gasket was damaged by Auto Plus's diagnoses. I talked to the Weatherford BMW and other auto shops; it would cost more than $10,000 to replace or repair. After I reviewed Auto Plus's Yelp reviews, I found there were many people had the bad experiences I just had. Their reviews stated Auto Plus was dishonest and shady, they denied their improper mechanic work and won't own up to their own mistakes... Then, I decided to take my car for a second opinion. Finally, the second auto shop found out the radiator which Auto Plus used into my car was "a poor quality aftermarket radiator with cut marks on the top and bottom" and coolant continued to leaks. Also, found Auto Plus "didn't replace tensioner and idler pulleys" which they needed to replace and what I had paid for $1249.89. The belt was found hanging off the edge and caused the belt to fail earlier. In addition, the second auto shop had proved there was no smoke from exhaust system and solved the noise from the engine. The truth is always revealed eventually. Auto Plus is not trustable for the work they agree to do, Auto Plus is unqualified for their misdiagnoses. Not recommended!! read more

My 1994 Honda Civic had headlight issues. Ali got me in really quickly and they fixed it for just half an hours labour. Now the headlights work great and I feel safe driving at night again. The next day I remembered that the brake light on the dash is on all the time. Again Ali got me in really quickly and his mechanic fixed it in three minutes at no charge! I was on my way home when my car broke down. I never have driven through Albany before. I wish I could make this up but my car broke down right on front of this shop. I saw Mr. Naim talking to someone when I approached him and explained what just happened to me. He calmly got his equipment and did a quick diagnostic then and there. He told me what was most likely the problem and asked if I wanted to leave the car at his shop. He was very polite and professional. I agreed and had someone pick me up. I've been with them from the date when I purchased my Audi A4 (I was the 3rd owner). They were always honest with me and did a great job. I love to do some minor service by myself, such as oil and filter change, headlight/taillight and brake pads replacement. Once I tried to replace a fuel filter by myself, but accidentally tore a fuel hose and broke a fuel connector and they were able to fix that without purchasing a new expensive hose. Since then I decided to leave all the job to Auto Plus :) During last 4 years with Auto Plus: - Diagnosed my car twice (every 2 years) - Replaced leaked water pump - Replaced timing belt and thermostat - Driver's window regulator - Fuel filter - Crankshaft position sensor Also, while parking my friend's Lexus, I tore off the front bumper and I asked Ali how to fix that. Stay away!!! That is one of "WOW" experiences. I brought my VW 2014 car on Friday. For a brake change. Not cheapest place - 400$, but I read all these review below... After replacing brakes, they were squeaking like hell. I returned couple of days after, asking to take a look on brakes again. What I expected them to do is to adjust brakes and disk. When I came for a car, I smelled burning rubber. I asked what happened. The method they used to get rid of brake noise - to 'take car for a spin' and 'push hard on breaks', ruining, actually my tires. I don't know where they were learning this technique, but I will never give them a chance to ruin my car again. PS. After comment from owner I want to state. 1. Breaks are still squeaking. 'Technique' didn't help. 2. When I asked about smell I've heard exactly what was described, 'take for a spin', 'push hard on breaks', 'we actually don't suggest that to customer but that helps, blabla'. read more

I had a great experience at Auto Plus Berkeley. I had been borrowing a 2005 BMW from a family member, and I was about to drive it down the coast from SF to Orange County to return it. Problem was - I had a number of warning lights pop up recently, and though the owner wanted to take care of any repairs himself, I needed an oil change and to make sure that it was ok for the drive. The experience was positive from the beginning, with them answering the phone at 6:02pm on a Friday, after they were technically closed (Weatherford BMW didn't pick up the Service phone an hour before they closed for me to schedule an appointment!). They looked up what type of oil I'd need and told me to come by in the morning. When I arrived, they promptly got to work, changed the oil, and investigated my check engine light and other sensor issues at no charge (running the initial diagnostics on the computer alone was at least $80 at other places). Learning that the car was safe for my drive (despite a faulty ext. temperature sensor) provided great peace of mind for my drive. I appreciated that Auto Plus Berkeley was open on Saturday when most shops weren't, but I would not hesitate to go back to Auto Plus Berkeley any day of the week. read more

THE BEST MECHANIC IN THE BAY AREA: i've been to alot of mechanics and most of them turned out to be swindlers. But my friend who fixes cars, recommended Naim at Auto Plus. So I went. I've been with him for 4 years now. He's ALWAYS HONEST & VERY AFFORDABLE. He has all his prices and work he'll do clearly printed on a brochure, so you know he's not changing the price or the work judging by your car. For example, while i was living in the midwest, I HAD to go to another mechanic and he told me I had to get all these things changed out, etc, etc. It was over a $1000 worth of work. I called Naim and he took the time to advise me and tell me if what they said made sense. IT DIDN'T. So I brought my car back to California and had Naim look at it. He charged me a very minimal fee to inspect all the areas that the other mechanic said was wrong and Naim told me, NONE OF IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. my car runs great and has had NO problems since I've been Naim at Auto Plus. If you need maintenance, timing belt replacement, or you car has problems, go to AUTO PLUS! read more

Got a flat tire? Well, I had a flat tire, and called in and asked if they could try to fix the flat tire (b/c of a screw on the road), and they said they could try fixing it, but they don't sell new tires. Since my sister recommended me to go to Ali and Naim's Auto Plus, I went to their shop anyways and Miguel, one of the mechanics, helped fixed the flat tire, took out the spare tire, and reinstalled the fixed tire to the car in just 10 minutes. I have driven the car around and the fixed tire seems alright! I also asked Naim about my car's brake pads, and then he drove the car around, then told me what I needed to know and the things I needed to be wary of. He told me to come back to the shop if I hear squeaky sounds when I brake. Hey, I ride bikes and I know what he meant. Overall, he was very kind and honest with his opinions about the status of my car. Lastly, I talked to Ali and he was patient and explained to me the things that I asked. There was no pressure from any of the mechanics to do any services with them. They really provided fair and honest opinions of any services for the car. They are great people! I called all over trying to get a price for the labor on a repair I needed. I always buy the parts when ever my car needs a repair because the parts get marked up ridiculously at any auto repair shop. My car was not running, and I took it to another mechanic to get a diagnostic. They didn't even remove the cover to see the timing belt, and they inferred that the crank shaft position sensor had to be off. I went and bought the sensor, assuming I'd be able to do the fix myself. I got under the car and removed all the belt covers. I came to find that my timing belt had somehow split down the middle. Half the belt was in place and half was getting chewed up in the pulley's. I bought the repair manual and found I would have to jack the engine out of its place to get to the belts and replace them. I started calling around. The only shop that even came close was XYZ motors in Oakland. I called Ali at autoplus in Albany and he came in $50 cheaper than everyone else when quoting only the labor for replacing the belt. I also happened to know that replacing the crankshaft position sensor was as easy plugging in a set of head phones. EVERY OTHER GARAGE WANTED TO CHARGE EXTRA to replace the sensor EVEN THOUGH the belts were already off!!! I CHOSE AUTO PLUS because Ali (the owner) gave me the lowest price and offered to replace the sensor for free (labor, I had the part)! They did a GREAT JOB! They did it in record time! SAME DAY! and they had the best price! They replaced my timing belt, and the crankshaft position sensor for $290! (I have a Mitsubishi galant 2002) I was SOOO PLEASED with them. This is an excellent and reasonable garage, and if something is easy to do in addition to the work they are already doing they will do it as a courtesy to you! When I got the car back my oil was changed! And they helped me replace a spark plug I was worried about at no extra cost! Can't say enough good things about this garage! read more
