JB's Grill - Sea bass en papilotte!

JB's Grill is a change of pace for lunch in Central Lafourche. The stretch of Highway 1 that runs…read morethrough Lockport, Mathews, and Raceland continues to grow faster and faster while traffic runs slower and slower. Getting in and out of a restaurant on time is difficult if you have an hour or less for lunch. There's good food in Central Lafourche, but it's difficult to eat well when everyone is competing on the congested roadway. Directly across the bayou, however, JB's Grill offers quite the different experience. Nestled at the end of the lavish neighborhood leading up to La Tour golf course, JB's Grill serves quality food in a relaxed atmosphere. The dining area looks a bit dated at first glance, but it's comfortable and has a subtle man cave vibe about it with the rolling leather chairs, sports on the TV, and golf paraphernalia everywhere. And while the windows at the back of the restaurant could afford to be bigger and wider, the view of the course is already spectacular. It's nice to relax and take it in, even if you're not one of the lucky few taking a break from a round of golf. The ribeye sandwich completes the boy's club atmosphere with grilled steak sandwiched between Bolillo bread and dressed with fried onion rings. If you're off the clock, wash it down with a beer. JB's Grill has an impressive variety of beers on tap for Central Lafourche, including Blue Moon, Goose Island, and Shock Top. On the lighter side, though probably the best regular menu item, are the fried green tomatoes. A generous portion tops a salad with boiled shrimp and lump crab meat. Drizzled with remoulade, the piping hot tomatoes combined with the cold seafood make for a refreshing and delicious combo. Always make sure to eye the dry erase board beside the entrance before you order, though. Chef Mike doesn't always run a weekly special, but when he does, it's always worth ordering. They range from simple (fried oyster poboy), to playful (meat pie with cracklins and demi glace) to fancy (sea bass en papilotte), to deliciously over-the-top (alligator sausage poboy topped with crawfish etoufee.) When there is a special, Chef Mike usually sells it throughout the week, but there's no set schedule for when they'll be offered, so be sure to get the special when its available.

We had no idea how right we were. The island was almost empty and the only people we encountered were state troopers sitting on the side waiting for some speeders. Further down into the island we had almost given up on the idea to have a "real" shrimp meal and turned around. Since it was time for a "natural" break we stopped at several places but they were all closed - except for one. When we drove on the parking lot a lady came out waving at us and asking us to come in. It was in fact the ONLY place that was opened selling beverages on Christmas Day. However, food was provided for free by the residents that came together to celebrate Christmas and they invited us to join them for their Christmas meal. We had ham and turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing among many other things. What a great experience. Everyone was so friendly and kind that even the 90 minute trip to and from N'awlins was worth every minute. Thank you!

Get ready to let the good times roll when you walk through the door, the sign above the counter…read moresays "Welcome to Cajun Paradise, I'm with couyon" being born and raised in southwest Louisiana I can definitely get the meaning in the correct context, I can also recognize authentic Cajun cooking when it's put down in front of me and mais sha let me tell you these folks are doing it proud. We stopped in here for lunch and ended up with a sampling of what in my opinion is probably the best example of cajun food done right in Houma and for miles around - everything was delicious and the service from Sarah L was outstanding. We started with the Charbroiled Oysters served with toasted french bread, the plump Louisiana oysters were succulent and dipping the french bread in the cajun butter became an obsession, definitely a must do starter - I wasn't leaving here without trying their chicken and sausage gumbo, perfect texture and complex flavors it will make you a believer, my hats off to the chef, definitely authentic - the fried catfish filets and jumbo fried shrimp platters were outstanding although we didn't do it these are the foundation of an amazing po-boy (maybe next time) - all the sides were exceptional from the fried okra and onion rings to my personal favorite the skillet fried potatoes and who could leave without a few beignets served hot covered in powdered sugar - what a meal they should have a place to lay down in the back for a "cajun nap". In my opinion if you craving some authentic cajun dishes you can't go wrong here, the portions are nice and the prices are very reasonable. Our schedule didn't allow us to return as we had planned but will definitely return when we are back in the area...

All food was solid. Seafood gumbo was particularly good. Definitely worth a visit if you are passing through town. For any Midwesterners, you may find the potato salad a little bland. Was expecting a bit more but it was okay. Next time I would skip and get a different side. Most locals seemed to order 1/2 pound of boiled seafood.
