I called the dealership, explained what was happening, that I was 550 miles from home, was planning on traveling another 250 miles the next day, and needed to get the car in at least for a diagnostic test. I was told that - regardless of the fact that the car was still under warranty and I was so far from home, the earliest they could get me in was in 6 days. (I called on a Tuesday, and they said they couldn't get to me - even for a diagnostic test - until the following Monday.) After speaking with the service tech, I asked to be connected to the service manager. I left a voicemail, explained the situation and asked for a call back. I never heard back. The vehicle had never overheated before, but they diagnosed and replaced the water pump, then claimed the radiator had a hairline crack and the thermostat should be replaced "just to be safe." They charged me over $2,700, which I had to put on my mother's credit card because I couldn't afford it on my own -- I'm a single working mom of two and a full-time nursing student. After driving the vehicle less than a week and only 200 miles, the check engine light came on for the first time ever and the vehicle began truly overheating. I brought it back, and they told me that coolant had entered the engine and the entire engine now had to be replaced -- for $9,000 with the shop acting like it was a favor to cover part of the labor. What really crossed the line is that the owner offered me a "temporary fix" so I could get rid of the vehicle -- essentially suggesting I pass the problem off to someone else before it blows up. I was shocked and disgusted. That's not just unprofessional -- that's unethical. I would never put another family in danger or financial ruin just to cover up a repair shop's mistake. This place took my only vehicle, made it worse, and left me stuck. They need to be held accountable for their practices. I'm filing a formal complaint with the Florida Attorney General's Office and the BBB. If you value your vehicle and your money -- go somewhere else.

Once my car was in the garage, they suddenly claimed my lug nuts were misaligned and tried to charge me an extra $120 and another hour of labor. At that point, I decided not to proceed with the repairs at this shop.. Later, on my way to a dealership for a second opinion, I discovered that the shop's technician had broken my wheel lock key - likely while tightening the lugs nuts back on after I declined the service. They never told me this happened. I lost an entire work day fixing the mess and getting my car repaired. This experience felt dishonest and retaliatory. I urge my fellow Gators to avoid this shop. I would not recommend Ahren's-- especially to university students-- based off of my experience with…read moretheir team and their extreme upcharging of parts. Their pricing is not honest at all. I took my car in with serpentine belt issues. For my make and model, this part generally costs $30-$50. Ahren's priced this part at $80. Their diagnostic examine also found belt tensioner issues. For the serpentine and belt tensioner replacement combined, they quoted me $512 of repairs. This is extremely high and gives me the inclination that this is another mechanic in town that is trying to take advantage of college students who are not as informed on car repairs. I do not think the presented quote is fair by any means so thanked them and let them know I would not be having service done their. I was presented with an $85 fee for a half-hour diagnostic look. This fee was not disclosed beforehand at all, was not mentioned verbally, and I did not sign anything agreeing to this fee. Take your car elsewhere. I took my vehicle here just out of convenience of location, but have previously had much better service at the Firestone off of Archer and with Billy's Auto Repair & Towing. UPDATE: I went in to pick up my car and wish I could leave a negative review. If you take your car here and leave without even having any work done, you will be charged an $85 minimum. I asked why I wasn't informed of this in anyway (no signatures, no verbal inform) beforehand and the woman working the front desk had the owner come out. He raised his voice and started asking why I hadn't taken my car to Billy's or somewhere else. In his rant he referenced other reviews that I have left on Gainesville for miscellaneous places which was unsettling. He lied and said he listened to my phone conversation, saying that I was informed of all fees beforehand-- I certainly was not and he wouldn't play the recording. I have lived in Gainesville for many years and can say assuredly that this is one of the shadier places in town. They use deceptive business practices and their prices are anything but honest.
