My first Yelp review of 2019 is about this super cool establishment along busy Richmond in or near Montrose. Henry's stands out among barber shops in that it opens at 7 a.m. That's right. If you need a haircut before work or school, this place will gladly hook you up at the break of dawn. Moi needed a zero guard fade in the worst way prior to a meeting for work so that was how I found myself here at a little after 9 a.m. today. Both Henry and Luis are really friendly and laidback. We took our two year old for a haircut at Henry's and we're a bit worried because our son can be fidgety. I love this barbershop. It is open now during the pandemic. I have been a customer since 1997 and this is a great traditional barbershop. Henry has had the shop since 1999 and worked for it for a couple of decades before that. He took over from Martin who founded the shop in 1956. In the 1980's they welcomed people who had AIDS when many other shops would not do so. They have always been GLBT friendly and non-judgmental staying true to their mission of helping all men look their best. I highly recommend them. read more

I made my first visit to this shop today, as a walk-in, about 30 minutes before closing. Both chairs had customers so if they took me, someone was staying past 5 pm. They said yes, and Luis finished first so I got him. He took his time with my cut, which i really appreciated after his 10-hour day on his feet. It came out great, and I will be back. The price is right ($15, plus tip), the place is just what you expect of an old school barbershop (they use a straight razor and hot shaving cream for the neck), and the location is perfect for me. I got so frustrated going to hair cutteries that offered coupons, and I kept trying, and you know the famous quote, that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I never got the result I was looking for! On the advice of three friends, I finally decided to try Richard, or Dick, he answers to both. I felt like Brigham Young upon seeing that celestial valley in Utah when he claimed, "This is the place!" At this barber shop you won't get soused on your favorite liquor. There aren't scantically-dressed girls with tequila shots. At this barber shop you won't find any gimmicks, because the only thing you are going to get here is: QUALITY. I officially got the worst haircut, ever, at this place. I love independent barber shops where you can chat up your barber in a relaxed atmosphere. This definitely seemed like that kind of place. All good so far. But then my barber got out the razor... I ended up with both ears cut and a cut near my hairline behind my ear. I sorta understood. I use a straight edge razor at home and have cut myself a few times, no biggie. But it seemed to take my barber a few minutes to realize what had happened and I could feel the blood streaming down my neck. I notified him of the situation and he finally grabbed some alum to stop the bleeding. OK, I thought I'd give the old fellow some slack. He apologized and said he shouldn't have used a new razor. But then I got home and my wife pointed out that the hairline on the back of my neck was crooked. That's it, I'm never going there again! I'm guessing Henry wasn't the one who cut my hair, so it may be worth asking for him specifically. read more

the short end of things: extremely awful and absolutely disappointing. bad for people with glasses, bad for people who know what they want, bad for anyone who could possibly want a haircut beyond what a child could do with clippers. don't make the mistake i made, don't come here the long side of things: i came by because there were high reviews and i like straight and to the point barbers. i have moved to the neighborhood recently and needed a new go-to barber. i asked for a high fade and a beard trim. i pointed to where on my head i wanted the fade and showed a picture and explained very clearly what i wanted for a trim as well as the whole thing. what i ended up with was a high bowl cut and a mangey beard with way less than i intended. i'm unable to follow closely how bad the barber is ruining my hair because i have to take my glasses off during it and there's a certain amount of trust exercised by men with bad vision to the people cutting their hair. i hoped i could tell them what i wanted and receive just that without having to walk them through a simple process. where i thought age and experience could bring quality i was wrong, they minced a fade into a bowl cut and a beard trim into bald spots. all i wanted was to clean up for the holidays but now i look like a mess, far worse than i did going in. i had to trim off my entire beard because of how badly they messed up. i only wanted a simple haircut and now i have the edgy stylings of the yesteryear, i'm beyond mad about all of this and it has turned every day into a bad hair day. my day was ruined when i got it and now i look like a clown for christmas so there goes the holidays. please don't make the mistake i made, don't go here. i'm not joking, don't go here. read more

I have been going to Henry's for well over 10 years, and I think I have found 2 mistakes in over 10 years. Both times I went back and he gladly and apologetically fixed them. Being former military and current law enforcement, I am VERY picky about my haircut... A very close and PERFECT military high-n-tight. A GREAT place to go and chit chat about darn near anything you want. And one of his best co-workers of all time, Dick, is now back!! I have ZERO complaints about either of these guys. Been going to Dick who was formerly at Dougs in the heights for almost a year now. He recently moved to this shop and I love it because it is closer to where I live. I followed Dick from Doug's Barbershop on 11th to Henry's Barbershop on Richmond for one simple reason. Dick, after a few flawless haircuts a few years ago, knows exactly how you want your hair cut. He does both scissor and clipper cuts with absolute expertise. Dick should be working at one of those over the top expensive salons, that charge a fortune. Henry's is $12. Henry is a reliable barber who has chosen to stay the course, translating into best-in-class value for someone like me who wants a basic razor cut every 2 weeks. Went in this Saturday morning to get a haircut by Mr. Henry. After reading the reviews, I went into the barbershop mindset on getting my haircut by Dick, but I thought to myself -- let's give Henry a try. He is a super nice fellow and I could tell he has had years of experience. He did miss a couple hairs on my neck which I shaved off when I got home, but other than that, he did a fantastic job. I am sure Dick is just as good. The difference, I think, between the two is, Dick is a little more "modern" with his haircutting technics. Henry still does some straight razor work, which I like.
