Henry James Bar B Que is serving excellent Lexington-style barbecue, so just ignore the 1980s decor as it adds to the charm and I'm sure keeps the prices down. We tried a chopped plate and a coarse-chopped plate, both with red slaw and fries. We also received a small tray of excellent hushpuppies that were hot and obviously right out of the fryer. I received a very large serving of finely chopped, moist, and flavorful pork. It was excellent and a great value, given the serving size. My dining companion received an even larger serving of the coarse chopped pork. I got to try a bite, but I preferred the chopped pork. The red slaw was finely chopped and very tasty. It was somewhat tame compared to other variations of red slaw that definitely have a little kick, like at Whispering Pines in Albemarle. The crinkle-cut fries were not quite hot and moderately crispy but were upstaged by the rest of the meal. It's all counter service at Henry James, but everyone was very friendly and genuinely trying to provide great customer service. Stop by on a lunch break and I ordered a BBQ sandwich and a cherry cobbler with ice cream to go. First and foremost the customer service was good. The sandwich was excellent! I got my takeout lunch today because they looked great. A little quiet, arriving just after opening time and with only one couple sitting at a table. They have an organized system of queueing around the outside, placing your order and then paying for it. I don't know if they do table service - I didn't ask. A large platter of pulled pork with cole slaw came with a bunch of hush puppies. Yes, I ate one of them and it was great. Though it would have been better with some butter. As for the barbecue, it was quite good. Certainly plenty of it though I found it a little salty and needing the sauce just a bit. Not great, but very good. I enjoyed it. The cole slaw was nicely chopped and very moist. I thoroughly enjoyed this meal and would get lunch from Henry James again. This place is a winner. If you are a vegetarian, as I prefer to be, you can still be well-fed here, even though it's a meat-based menu. They have pinto beans or baked beans, slaw (not my favorite kind, but still good), mashed potatoes (tasted real, to me--I don't like instant), and green beans. They have a senior plate, which my hubby and I like to get because it's smaller and saves money, but sometimes I get big containers of veggies and just take them home to enjoy for a day or two. My husband really likes the sliced pork barbecue, though, and nearly always gets that. We almost always go through the drive-through. The menu is varied and interesting, for a barbecue place. The food is always tasty and service is quick! It's a pretty spacious restaurant with counter service. They have specials during the week like chicken pie and half chicken. Friday features half chicken with barbecue sauce--it often sells out so go early if you are interested. My favorite hush puppies are from Henry James, especially with honey butter. What a gem of a find! My only complaint: they don't offer Mac n cheese as a side! But I'm starting to think that is just a Florida thing. We came here twice during our visit to NC. Once we pick up and once for done in. The prices are super reasonable. They offer a daily special. Two sauces available: sweet or hot. If dining in you order at the counter and then wait for your food. No table service. If you need a drink refill just walk up to the front. Well if you are looking for a quick bbq bite and not breaking your wallet( i walked away with a full happy belly), this is a place to try. It is not typical grill/ high end bbq place, but definitely offers surprisingly good bite if you are looking for beef ribs( i personally am a huge fan of it), the price and food quality is far exceed than what you would thought. The entry is nothing fancy, open space, fast line for ordering, a few local folks were there for lunch when i was there. Menu is easy to read, service is great! And my 4 pieces of beef ribs were covered with good sauce and meat were falling out/ sliding out of the bones easily.Fresh slow without too much mayo, fries just regular fries. Talk about a diamond in the rough. Driving thru North Carolina at 8pm starving and not much open to get a hot meal. We found Henry James in Rudolph County. If your not looking for it you will drive by. We stopped in and they were open till 9pm. The ordering and service area reminded me a little like a concession stand at a football game. This was not bad thing though.The family and I each ordered the pulled pork tray that comes with 3sides. I had the hush puppies,fries and pinto beans. The fam got mashed potatoes, barbecued beans and a side of green beans. Let me tell ya the pulled pork was so moist you didn't need any sauce. But I had to try their hot and regular bbq sauces. What a taste. The hot wasn't stupid hot and the regular was a little runny but so good. I think they may make it with malt vinegar,it went great with the hush puppies. Let's get to Those puppies. I would say pan fried. Like a good meatball crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside. You get an amazing corn bread flavor with every bite. And the quantity is great. I was eating them more then my pulled pork which I eventually took home. I want to say the mashed potatoes are made fresh because of the small pieces of potato but I couldn't tell. This is probably the best of the lot of Henry James Barbecue locations, and I'm not sure whether Henry or James owns it - their partnership split a number of years ago - Henry took some locations, James others. This is a fast food setup - you go to the counter, order, pay, and come when called They also have a drive thru. This pork is tender and moist, but void of any semblance of smokiness. It is not overly chopped, and comes out of the kitchen pretty well sauced, some may say over sauced. This sauce is vinegar based, and is rather mild. They have a spicier sauce on the table, but adding more sauce gets things even wetter. The taste of the finished product is nice, a very Lexington kind of BBQ. This is one of the few NC BBQ joints where I like the sliced as much, if not more, than the chopped - moist, no dryness, allowing it to work well on a sandwich. The slaw is the typical red Lexington BBQ slaw, rather sharp. The hush puppies are really good here, just a hint of sweetness. The Brunswick Stew is a favorite of mine - nice mix of vegetables, and a good helping of chicken and pork - most places now seem to forget that meat is an essential element in this dish. And the prices are reasonable, the portions nice. read more

In another chapter of my quest for the best NC BBQ, I happened to be in Ramseur one day. Asheboro was the closest town with good BBQ, and after cruising a few reviews, I settled on Henry James. For some reason, I ordered a plate of beef ribs rather than BBQ, something I ordinarily would not do. Luckily though, my man ordered the pork. It was good. Not great, but good. I like the fact that you can order it the way you like it - chopped fine, chopped large or sliced (I've never seen another restaurant give you this choice, but more should). I like mine chopped large. I recall that it had a good porky flavor, but not as much smoke as my ideal 'que. But a good, solid BBQ nonetheless. Not too dry, good flavor. The slaw was great - it's a fine example of the red Lexington style. I also liked the hushpuppies. Hushpuppies are a dime a dozen in NC, but these were especially tasty. My ribs were also tasty. It was kind of hilarious, though. Being beef ribs, they are large. I wasn't prepared for how my plate would be this giant, caveman looking extravaganza. They were slathered in a rather good tomato-based BBQ sauce. I liked the sauce, but wished for a bit less of it. Still, the ribs were well cooked and tender. I had a grand ol' time gnawing on the bones like a little savage. My man ordered some cherry cobbler, which I tasted. While it was a good flavor, it was far too sweet for me. If you have a serious sweet tooth, you'll like it. Ask the ladies to put ice cream on it for you. All in all, a good experience. The staff was efficient and nice. The dining area was clean. My wife and I ate here on a Saturday afternoon. This isn't what I would call a traditional BBQ restaurant. The menu only specifies the different types of plates/platters you can order. No meats are mentioned. When we inquired about the kinds of meat we were told they had hamburgers and "the barbecue". Upon further questioning we found out the only meat served is pork. I asked about how it's prepared and the young lady had to ask someone in the back to explain how they cook their "barbecue". i was told that it is put in a rotisserie. Being from an area known for BBQ this isn't what I expected from a BBQ restaurant. My wife and I both decided to go with the Saturday special which is a full rack of BBQ ribs. They are served with baked beans and fries. We got an order of hushpuppies to go with it. We picked our food up at the counter when it was ready and I knew I had made a mistake as soon as I saw it. The ribs had so much sauce on them that you couldn't even see them. After scraping as much sauce as I could off of the top slab (about a 1/4 cup) I started to eat. The ribs are tender and easy to come off of the bone. That's the best I can say for them. The meat it self is very bland like the ribs are boiled and are given no seasoning. I'd imagine that's why theirs so much sauce so it will have some flavor. I'm not sure where the sauce comes from but it is very generic like something you can get from any bottle. Between the two of us we ate less than half of a rack. When we informed the staff of our displeasure the girl told us that she'll have to tell the cooks to go easy on the sauce next time. No offers of a refund at any time. The special cost us $16.99 each. With two teas and the side of hushpuppies it totaled $42. All we ate was two sides of beans, fries, hushpuppies, less than half a rack of ribs (maybe six bones) and tea for $42. At $2 apiece for sides and teas we should have spent $14. On a good note, the beans were pretty good. They had a nice touch of onions and pork in them. The hushpuppies are very good and there are plenty to go around. Unfortunately this is not my kind of BBQ. I won't return and would recommend to anyone to try and find another place for this type of food. read more

Fresh, light sweet hush puppies, plenty of them -perfect as far as I'm concerned. My boyfriend had the chopped pork with slaw, and enjoyed it. The sauce was neither Lexington style or western style - when I asked what it was, she laughed and called it Henry James style. It was not ketchupy and sweet, but was not vinegary, either. Sort of in between? Anyway it was good, but then again, I've never met a BBQ I didn't like. The slaw seemed more of a BBQ slaw than creamy mayo based slaw. I had the burger all the way, with chili, slaw, onions, and mustard. The toppings were yummy and plentiful. The burger itself was nothing special, maybe a precooked frozen patty. I took a flyer on this Bar B Que restaurant based on its location on my route between Charlotte and Chapel Hill. It is a clean, tidy and air conditioned space. You order at the counter and the service is prompt and kind. It checked out well in the three primary bbq criteria--the shredded pork was moist and tasty; the hush puppies were light and addicting; and the slaw was fresh and zesty. I would stop there again. The price is right and the local police eat here, always a good gauge of a barbecue place. read more

You know the feeling when you have a craving for something--like barbecue. Well I had it and called in the order. (Usually go to Jed's but they were closed.). I asked for extra barbecue sauce and even said that I wanted my barbecue swimming in sauce. Well, hubby got it home and NO sauce--and I mean absolutely none. It was so dry it was like sawdust. French fries were rubber. Thought to give them a try but never again. Ruined experience and craving. And we ordered 2 cobblers and they weren't in the bag either. Ugh! read more

Went there today based on these reviews and liked it. Was trying to find out if the cue was wood-smoked, but no one had any idea what I was talking about. They called in a guy who said it was pit-cooked and I realized I just wasn't going to find out. There's really no smoke flavor, but the moistness and softness of the pork is quite pleasing. Really liked the slaw, which is sort of halfway between Lexington and Eastern - seems to have some horseradish in it. And the hushpuppies are perfectly fried; not a drop of grease on them. One day you go and they give you lots of bbq on your sandwich and the next time you go all that's on it is the buns! There is never any consistency! I went last week for the last time! I just made a $25 dollar purchase and asked the lady at the window if I could get change for a 20, she looked at the owner and the owner said No! This place was awesome. We were just riding through Asheboro in the mood for some good NC BBQ. The reviews made us a bit hesitant but the food was seriously delicious. The service was good too which is always a plus. If we ever find ourselves in Asheboro again, we will definitely eat here! Great BBQ, great sauces and great sides. Slaw and hush puppies are good. Beef ribs are boiled and devoid of any BBQ flavor other than the thick sugary sauce. Pork BBQ also lacks flavor, tastes like steamed pork all flavor is in the sauce. Not a hint of radiant cooking from gas, electric or wood heat and no wood smoked flavor--- it doesn't meet the definition of BBQ. They should advertise it as boiled meat. The owners need to sample some other restaurants and make serious corrections. I could not recommend this place even if the food was free. read more

Slaw, to die for! Hushpuppies are perfection. Brunswick stew...don't even get me started, super delicious! Kind, quick and personable service. I don't enjoy pickles but these weren't bad! Taking home some cobbler! Strawberry and peach! Perfect stop to make after a long day at the zoo. Oh, and, duh BBQ..amazing, juicy, chopped couldn't think of a better way to end my day off!
