Absolutely Outstanding Tennessee State Park - A True Hidden Gem! We just wrapped up an unforgettable evening at Henry Horton State Park, and it easily earns every one of its five stars. Located along the beautiful Duck River--one of the most biodiverse rivers in the world--this park offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and family fun without feeling overcrowded. The campground is top-notch: spacious, well-maintained RV sites with concrete pads, reliable Wi-Fi, clean and modern bathhouses, and plenty of peaceful wooded tent and primitive options (including some great backcountry sites for those seeking more solitude). If you're looking for a place to get away from other hikers and enjoy your time in nature this is a much better option than say Fall Creek Falls and just as beautiful. If you're looking for "safety in numbers" hike one of the more popular destinations. In a 3-4 mile hike I only came across 4/5 other small groups of 2. It's beautiful and well marked. I parked at the camp ground store and hiked the river trail to the wetland loop, and back around again to the river trail back to the parking lot. Trails are CLEARLY marked with color symbols attached that the trees. The only mistake I made was leaving the observation tower I came off the stairs and continued walking on the trail in front of me. It led me to the backcountry trail but it was clear within a few minutes and I could look down at the river and see the correct trail. Just a careless mistake, but again the trail was marked with sign posts at important intersections. It was a pretty flat and easy enough hike that would be easy enough for school age children (and it's easy to shorten or park in a different lot on a different day or after lunch) I'm not in great shape and considered it a decent workout. Didn't have to really stop and catch my breath or pause. No big uphill climbs. I really enjoyed seeing the wetlands from both sides and climbing the observation deck. Just watching the small birds work their way through the marsh grass was pretty neat. Trails are VERY well defined. You aren't going to wonder if it's a park trail or a deer trail that leads into a swamp. Great looking spot to camp. There are lots of amenities in the park itself from a restaurant, store and even a hotel and cabins. Also offers golf course and a skeet range. The bathroom even has free showers if you wanted to bring a kit to freshen up after a long hike. Make sure to stop by and see Cotton the owl and (I think) Buddy the Red tail hawk next to the store in the campground. read more

The park is lovely. This 2 stars is exclusively for the hotel accommodations. While the staff was polite and available and helpful, this hotel was NOT updated and up to date. The bed was AWFUL. I felt like I was moving the entire night. The bathroom was yucky feeling so I showered with a towel on the tub floor. Additionally I cringed if the shower curtain touched me. Great water pressure tho. The lighting was not great but nice big windows. I disliked the door to the outside in my room bc it felt unsafe however I had zero issues. The carpet was updated so that was good. There was dust on all the stuff. I will say I am used to way better accommodations so I blamed it on being a state park; however there are updated parks in TN with amazing accommodations (fall creek falls). I was there for a retreat so I didn't have the option to chose a different place but I would never choose this spot for myself. If you like scuzzy hotels, this is the place for you. read more

DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD AT HENRY HORTON PARK!!!! 500 for one pool visit later. I went to HH pool and bought a prepaid card with my venmo cc, in order to save money for future trips to the pool. A year later while doing my taxes. I noticed on my printout a monthly charge to Henry Horton that happened for almost a year. When I called HH to ask what this could be. They just denied it was them and said "oh well" and didn't even offer this struggling single mother a free meal at their restaurant. 500.00 And "oh well" well oh well I will just review your park every month to make people aware of what goes on there. read more

Visited for the first time today to find some local hiking trails! I took one of my dogs with me. She loves hiking! It took us quite a while to find any of the trailheads. I had them pulled up on my phone before leaving home, but there was absolutely no cell service! I suggest either taking a screenshot or downloading the map ahead of time. Once finding a couple of the trailheads, we parked and got ready for our hike! We were looking for something in the 4 or 5 mile range today. There were not a lot of longer hikes, but we set off on the Wilhoite Trail and then took the River Trail loop around! It was a super easy trail. Would be great for families! The trail had some beautiful river views and an observation deck near the Wetlands Trail. So pretty! I was bummed to see quite a bit of trash and large trash dump piles along the trail. Will be back to explore more! read more

We stayed at Henry Horton for my daughter's wedding in the cabins. We weren't sure what to expect for accomodations since we don't live in the area. The cabins were clean and quiet. We were able to cook big meals for our family with the utensils available. The water pressure wasn't great but we had hot water. The wood fireplace (cabin 8) was fantastic. Our family stayed in cabin 7 which was similar and other family was in cabin 4 (gas fireplace) - that was the most spacious because it was handicap. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was delicious. And we had a wonderful wedding reception in the conference hall. The caterers were great and the food was delicious. Everyone was easy fo work with. The biggest challenge was planning the wedding long distance and the park's responsive time. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this park. I've been a camper for over six decades, and this park has become our favorite. The campground is incredibly clean and quiet. The staff are extremely friendly. Hiking trails are available for every level of physical activity, including trails for ATV wheelchairs. A golf course, shooting range, restaurant, interpretive center, hotel -- what else could a person ask for. And the location is close to large cities in case you want to take a break and take in a movie or restaurant. read more

We visited Henry Horton for the first time last week (2 nights) & LOVED it. We're tent campers. It was a clean, safe, and enjoyable campground. Great for small kids - there is a big sandbox, playground, splash pad, little camp shop, and also Buddy the hawk & Cotton the owl (who have been rescued due to injury and habitat loss & live in enclosures there). We took hikes along the Duck river, which is the most biodiverse river in N. America. We saw several fish including a large spotted gar & saw many species of freshwater snails and mussels in the shallows. Very cool place! read more

Any park that allows teenagers to bring their pit dog to the kids playground is extremely dangerous. All parents became concerned and told their kids to stay away from the dog. Went for a golf outing and two nights in Cabin 5. When I showered I found a dirty wash cloth on the shower curtain. Gross!!! No paper towels. No ice or ice cube trays. The remote had no cover over the batteries. Gross! The mattress was old and the sheets did not fit. This is the worst state park cabin I have ever visited. I am embarrassed as a tax payer. read more

Finding the RV park was a little confusing but other than that, this is our favorite state park we have visited so far. The play area was close by & my kids loved visiting the birds & the store. My son invited me to go camping with him and his family. This is the first time I went. We are tent campers. It's a hour and a half drive from home so worth it. There's a little store just in case you forgot something. There's a owl named Cotton ,we watched him turn his head! Next to him in his own habitat was Buddy a eagle. There's hay rides.A splash pad play area.On the weekends there's a farmer's market. My son plays disc golf, he enjoyed it. We also went swimming at the pool ( big and kiddie one) Went went fishing also. The duck river is beautiful! We're going back in a couple of weeks to go tubing before it gets cold. read more

We walked around the state park a bit. We probably didn't explore this very well as we got in around dinner time and it was hot, so the kids were disinterested. The main reason we stayed here was to have a place to walk around a bit and then crash. The room was passable; it's in an obvious need of renovation, the tub tile was cracked around the water handle. The room stayed cool and the bedding was fine. If you don't get up on a weekend day, then you don't get the buffet, which sounds pretty good. You get Danish in a Bag. This breakfast nook is upstairs from the main desk and is surrounded by old TVs and other debris. Summary: A good place to crash and walk around. Probably better in fall and spring. read more

My family and I started to stay a few years ago at the cabins and we've returned every year since then. The cabin we stay in is comfortable and easy to get to everything yet private as well. We love that we can grill, make a pit fire and use the fireplace inside. We've stayed in all seasons, and it's always been a good experience. The staff are all very friendly. The park grounds are beautiful, and the trails are for all levels of experience. We don't live that far so we stay for a little get away. Our kids love it and look forward to it. There's multiple different styles of play ground for them to enjoy. In the summer we tube the Duck River or go into the river off one of the trails. In December we drove around and looked at Christmas lights and then made a fire in the fireplace and had smores and hot chocolate. Reservation and check in process is so easy. They have amazing firewood for sale at a great price in the lobby too. Overall a great experience. Were looking forward to staying soon, we just booked a trip! read more

We love camping here and thought we would try the shooting range. Supposed to open at noon but nobody came and it was a Saturday. Not some slow weekday. 2 other cars waiting also. We drove to the park office and they were gone to lunch until 1:10. We went back to the range entrance and one car had given up and left. Gate was still locked so we quit at approx 12:30. We were traveling in a rented RV and stayed at this lovely state park in late June of this year. I'd had very limited experience staying overnight in state parks and was still adjusting to the whole RV thing (with three rambunctious children). The park itself was beautiful. Wooded with very slight hills, good roads, good signage. We found an open campsite and backed in the RV, hooked it up, and then waited for the park ranger (not positive that he's called that, but it sounds credible). He came along within an hour or so and very pleasant checking us in. The bathrooms were immaculate and the shower area was very nice (large and with plenty of hot water). There were some handicap-accessible sites right by the bathroom, too. read more

I live in California, so relied solely on online reviews and photos - my expectations were exceeded. The park is clean, well maintained, serene, and beautiful. Everyone we encountered was extremely friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. The picnic pavilion was clean and spacious. A playground was nearby and the restrooms were well maintained. Our family has several small children and the staff was patient and engaging with them. We thoroughly enjoyed the group activities (Canoe/Kayak float, Birds of Prey presentation, nature craft) we participated in. Truly a memorable experience. read more

I recently went camping with some friends for two nights using one of their primitive campsites. PROS -The campsite was easy to find and easy to get to. You can easily drive right up to your spot. This however is a double-edged sword which I will get into later. -Gas stations and grocery stores are really close in case you need to go on a firewood or food run. -The campsite itself was very clean. -The campsite had a nice picnic table, fire pit with built-in grill, and a nice spot to setup a tent. -The bathrooms and showers near the main office were super clean and pretty much bug-free. -There is good Wi-Fi near the main office. -Dumpsters are easy accessible to throw away your trash. -You can book your campsite online. -Prices are cheap. -It seemed like a very safe place and also kid friendly. -Lots of tree cover around the primitive campsites which kept out a lot of the rain. CONS -Being that your campsite is so easy to drive up to and find, you will get TONS of car traffic. The campsite is right next to a road that dead ends, but TONS of cars would drive pass our campsite on a constant basis. Some cars were just visitors looking around and others were park rangers and the campsite staff. When the park rangers and campsite staff would drive by it seemed like they would purposely drive slow and snoop around to see what you were up too. At night they would spotlight our campsite with their bright headlights being nosy. Not cool. We even had cars driving by as late as 1:30 AM. This kills the whole camping experience. We chose to book one of the primitive campsites for more privacy, but there was hardly any. Other than the random cars driving by, the campsite was quite. -The bathrooms were super clean, however they had motion detectors everywhere for turning the lights off and on. Many times I had to exit the shower to set off the motion detectors because the lights went out on me. This seems like a stupid complaint, but it got really annoying after awhile. WILL I GO BACK? -Maybe, but I will research other places first to find something with better privacy not so close to a high traffic road. read more

It is quite a drive from Huntsville into Tenn. Not real easy to find off I-65. Nice golf course that is very reasonable priced. My wife enjoyed the scenery and rolling hillside. Go in the fall. Bring a camera or your iPhone 7 to take some wonderful pictures of southern Tennessee as the leaves change. read more

This review is for camping at a primitive campsite at the Henry Horton State Park. The good: * You're able to reserve a campsite ahead of time. I did a two night reservation over the phone. * Each campsite has a dedicated area to set up your rent that's surrounded by wooden logs. These area are well placed and your tent won't get submerged even during heavy rain. It rained pretty much the whole time we were there and our tent was fine. * They have a fire pit with a grill at each site. * It's easy to access Hwy. 11 from the park, so it's quick to do a supply/food run if you need it. We had to run out and get some firewood during our stay. We bought some at a gas station and then a grocery store nearby. There were signs saying that you could buy firewood at the park itself, but we weren't sure where. * The bathrooms are great! Very clean, very nice, and very green. I was very surprised at how energy/water efficient they were. Bring your own toilet paper though! The stuff they have is hair thin :( * Hiking trails near the campsite * Many fun, outdoorsy activities near the park. * The campsites have a lot of foliage over them so you can still have a fire even during a mild rain. It rained both nights we stayed, but we were able to start and keep a fire going despite that. * The park is very pretty. * Sites have a pole for hanging up your trash bag. * Each site has ample parking space. * The sites are a good distance from each other. We felt pretty well secluded from the other campers. * Dumpster available to dispose of your trash. * There is a river nearby. Great opportunity for canoeing, swimming, and other water related activities. The bad: * Dogs are welcome but have to be on a leash at all times. Kind of defeats the purpose of bringing the pooch along in the first place :( * Primitive campsites are on a dead end street, yet there was A LOT of traffic all day long. Park rangers and campground supervisors drove by very slowly several times, clearly staring at our sites and being snoopy. It was very annoying at night because they would blind us with their headlights forever, while slowly creeping past our camp. All throughout the day, random vehicles (who clearly weren't connected to park services) would drive down the road, turn around and drive off. This kept happening as late as 1:30AM! It was very strange and made it hard to sleep. Not really sure why there was so much traffic, but that is by far the biggest complaint I have. * There are posted signs stating that no alcoholic beverages are allowed at the site, although no one actually checked our camp. The signs also said that no loud music is allowed, but didn't mention fireworks. The verdict: Overall this is a clear winner, save all the sketchy vehicle traffic. I will definitely be going back and would highly recommend this to both noob and seasoned campers. read more

My husband and I (and the dogs) love this park! It's got a lot of space to explore so it's not crowded like some of the other parks we have been too. It's very clean, they do a great job keeping it clean. We haven't been to the restaurant since they've redone everything. But we used to love that too! Great place to camp with kids. We took our 3 yr old and our 10 month old, who recently learned how to walk. We picked a sight in walking distance from the play ground which worked out great for us. We put the baby in the stroller and walked to the play ground a couple times a day. If you walk to the tent camping area there is a trail that leads you down to the duck river. Even though the trail was natural it was dry and the dirt was compacted enough to use our little travel stroller. There were a few parts where we had to carry the stroller a short distance over roots or up on a small bridge. However, we were able to hike a 1/2 mile down the trail and a 1/2 mile back. Fortunately our 3 year old loves to hike in the woods and this was a super easy walk. I wish the check-in/store was open during the week. That is the only negative I could find. It would have been very convenient to have a little camping store open in walking distance. There is so much to do at Henry Horton and it is beautiful, I highly suggest you take your family. read more

My husband and I did a quick one night-er here to get our feet wet for camping season, what a cute little park. I made a reservation online for Saturday night only, which was nice, some places require two night stays when you make reservations. We stayed in the last spot #9 in the primitive area ($8/night), this put us a little far from the bathrooms, but the 10 minute stroll over to them wasn't a problem at all. The primitive tent spots are nice and wooded, very pretty. They seem a little close together, but not too much. The group next to us was a no show so it felt pretty private. I am not sure we would stay in the tent spot on the end again, we had a raccoon that kept sneaking up to the site, sending the dogs into a frenzy each time. We eventually found some rocks to throw it's way and it finally left us alone. We put ALL food and even the cooler in the car to be safe. As others have mentioned there was some traffic that drove past; campers, a tractor, and grounds keeper four wheeler's as well. It took a way from the feeling of seclusion a little, but it wasn't that bad. The tent site was nice and large, plenty of room for our dogs to play and to set up...well..camp. The trails were nicely marked once you got on them, but the trail heads were very informal. Didn't really have a map and bathroom set up that is common at other parks. They were nice and easy, and the one that went along the river was pretty, we worked our way down to the river bank a couple times so the pups could cool off and swim. It was a nice river, a little muddy, but very calm. We are hoping to come back with our canoe one day and take a nice canoe trip on it. One slightly confusing part is the area where the Inn and office are are separate from where all the tent and RV camping are. There is a store on the tent and RV camping side that sells firewood, snacks, and camping necessities. The firewood, is not bundled though, it's $1/log. Seems a little steep, we bought 15 and it burned very slow, so it was plenty for the night, and the proceeds go to reconstructing the "local mill". This is not the most spectacular park with grand scenery, but, it's pretty and cute, and for being a hop and skip down Nolensville Rd for us, I am sure we will be back for little quickie camping trips, we enjoyed our stay. read more

Yesterday, Phil and I went to Henry Horton State Park with a group of friends for lunch. It was HORRIBLE. The only positive thing I can say is the waitress was friendly. I give it 1 star because the rating won't let me do a negative star. We had a group of 12 people. Once we gave our orders, it took forever to get our food. They brought 1 plate at a time out, then it would be at least 5-10 minutes before the next person got their food. Phil was the last to receive his food and it was an entire hour after the first person got theirs. The tomato basil soup was more salt than anything else. I had a mushroom swiss burger that was super dry. Phil had a jalapeno burger. The waitress asked if he wanted everything on it and he said yes....when he finally got it, it was a bun, a patty, a piece of cheese and jalapenos...that's all...no condiments at all...if he hadn't wanted everything on it, what would they have left off...the patty? It's not like they were crowded either...there were only 2 other tables that had people sitting at them. We will NEVER eat there again! read more

Great campground. It was our first camping trip as a family with a 2.5 year old. Had a great time. They actually had activities for kids throughout the day. On another review somebody mentioned the playground at the camping area was old but it is replaced and brand new and our son didn't want to leave it. Great trails and the Duck River is right there as well. Will definitely go back. read more
