It is a bit of a drive off the beaten path but so worth it. In addition to the exquisite wines, the view is impressive. The first time we visited Spire Mountain Cellars, we joined the wine club. We love bold reds and the winemaker delivers! The tasting room is rustic and comfy. There is seating outside, also. Some of the area is covered and some isn't so there are a variety of seating options. It is closed in the winter so go quickly if you want to check it out. We will make sure we get in a couple more visits before it closes and will wait as patiently as possible until it opens again in the spring. I will take photos next time and update this post.

We had an hour or so to spare before check-in, and I found this highly rated winery on Yelp, so I thought it would be a good place to stop for a break. It was an enjoyable drove along narrow country roads from the main highway in late October, with the trees showing their fall colors and fields of grass waving in the sun. Our GPS guided us to the front entrance, after which it got a bit confused as the paved, one-lane access road wound this way and that. We followed the signs to the tasting room and entered the medium-sized, stonewalled tasting room. We hadn't called ahead for a reservation, given the time of year, but the attendant welcomed us with open arms. He provided a great description of the vintner background, the winery, and the diversity of wines they grow. While I had tasted several Pinot Noirs from the Umpqua Valley, I wasn't aware of the other varietals. The attendant was very accommodating, letting us taste several different wines, especially as my wife is not as interested in wine as I am. I'm not a big fan of most white wines, although they are known for their Grüner Veltliner. I wasn't keen on the GV, but their Sauv Blanc was quite good for a US offering (we both like NZ Sauv Blancs a lot). On the darker side, their Syrah was just okay, but their Tempranillo was the best U.S. example of this varietal that I've ever had, and just a bit below some of the amazing ones I've had the pleasure to taste from Spain. It was so impressive that I decided to sign up for their quarterly wine club, which had been the farthest thing from my mind when I entered, but I've been very impressed with the shipments I've received so far. I wasn't feeling well that day but the view was a total zen vibe! There's an inside bar area, ample seating outside. It's best to get a reservation or get there early for the outside tables. Restrooms are inside, parking is on the vineyard. The day we were there, they had a taco vendor for food. Overall, this was one of our favorite wineries to visit and hope to be back when we're in the area.

Their dog-friendly patio made the perfect spot for us to relax. We were on the hunt for some white wines, and Amy, our gracious host, created a custom tasting to help us find the perfect bottles to take home. We left with a 2022 Albariño, along with the 2023 and 2024 Rosé. A beautiful winery with serene views -- the perfect backdrop for sipping and savoring.

Not stodgy and formal like other tasting rooms. We briefly met Brian on his way out and enjoyed the company of his wife Crissy as she poured. When you stop in, ask to see the impressive picture's of Pam and her big fish! Our wine flights were generous and snack plates were a delicious portion of cheese cubes, hard salami, and macadamia nuts. We finished our plates and wine and spent an additional hour mulling around the artisan gifts and art for purchase and sharing stories with other tasters. We appreciate the "Aloha" spirit we felt while visiting and would recommend to others who are looking for a laid back family atmosphere. Freed Vineyard and Winery, OR - September 29, 2024…read more We arrived on a Sunday afternoon right about 1:30 as part of the Harvest Host program. We were met by wine host Karla. She told us where to park our RV down by the river (S. Umqua). The vineyard is a good size. We found a nice shady spot along the river, got set up, and walked back to the tasting room. Karla greeted us warmly when we arrived and offered us seating on their nice covered patio or indoors. It was a little breezy and coolish, so we opted for indoors. The indoor area has a nice bar as well several nice sized tables. There are lots of water color pictures on the wall and some other nice pieces of art. There is a Hawaiian theme reflecting the roots of the winery owners. Karla told us a little about the winery and poured us some nice wines.We had a rose, two Tempranillos (2019 and 2020), two Sarahs (2014 and 2020), and a red blend (Sarah, Cab. Sauvignon, Merlot). We met winery owner Pam, a very vibrant and kind hearted lady. We had some nice conversation together. We had a wonderful time and bought several bottles of tasty wine. Wine tasting fee is $12/person, waived with a two bottle purchase per person.
