Dr. Lin was my childhood dentist. For as far as remember he was pretty good compared to my dentist I had before I got into the 6th grade. The dentist I had before him was very rude and didn't treat kids properly. It was a totally different story with Dr. Lin, maintained heavy patience in providing braces and post orthodontic dental care for me. Guided me thoroughly in both braces and retainer care. This was a very long time ago. Yes he is very detail oriented and trains his staff to be very caring and gentle. Even funnier is he doesn't get ticked off when a cavity is seen. Most of the time the filling is done pain free and is not noticed until finished. Got some nice tootbrushes from him as well. Of course they are now biodegraded into the land. Only issue with this place is that you have to go outside to use the bathroom. read more

Went in for an emergency during COVID and was extremely surprised that I had never left a review for my dentist of 29+ years. Dr. Hengsheng Lin is an absolute pillar/cornerstone for most of us Asian kids growing up in Cupertino in the past decade. It's actually been a pretty wild journey having seen Dr. Lin since I was in elementary school (cavities, sweet tooth, accidents) all the way through teenage years in middle school (wisdom teeth, braces) then the college years and then well into post-grad life. Although it was funny to see him with a face shield and decked out in PPE and everyone asked to wait in the cars rather than the usual waiting room - sigh, can't wait for life to go back to normal post this pandemic. If you ask around the Asian community, notably the Chinese and Taiwanese community in South Bay, you'll hear about Dr. Lin - which is how my parents came across. He has carried this reputation for quite a while as one of the first Chinese dentists to open in the South Bay. My parents discovered Dr. Lin when I was only in 5th grade and that was through referral. They asked around their friends on who they saw for dentists and who'd they recommend for us. At the time, my case was extremely complicated. The few dentists we had seen around South Bay and Peninsula were impatient and seemed to have really only taken on their profession for the money, hurrying past X-rays and charts and waving aside concerns while upselling services and upcharging insurance for as much as they can get. My case was delicate as I had teeth that were growing was giving me a severe underbite and the decision to extract/keep them would result in pretty significant cosmetic changes in my how my face/chin/cheeks would develop into as an adult. This was a big decision that I remember to this day how warm Dr. Lin was in explaining to me in my middle school skater vans and Hot Tpoic T-shirts (not just my parents!) what the treatment would be like, how it would work, and what it would turn out. This was a sizeable treatment that happened over the period of 3 years and the results were nothing short of fantastic. Every time I've ever had an emergency since then for something new, I've always left a visit in the office and gotten seen the same day in severe situations, even if it's on Sunday at 4 in the afternoon (sorry about that chipped tooth...didn't expect the guy to deck me in flag football). To this date, I'm constantly shocked every time I go in and see just how many new patients are there to this day based on referral. If tech companies could emulate this kind of true organic-word-of-mouth to grow their business, we'd probably not need venture capital ever, for better or worse; but that's a separate topic entirely heh. read more

Dr lin has been my dentist and orthodontist for a very long time and I will continue to stay with him for a long time after this. His staff is all very friendly and easy to work with. When I miss an appointment, they are very nice about it and quickly hep me reschedule. The interior of his office is very clean and cool. He does not have a bathroom, so you have to find one elsewhere in the building. Normally I only have to wait a couple of minutes before I am seated on one the chairs, and sometimes I'm out within 10 minutes. Some of his staff do have a little bit of a heavy hand however cause I guess they're not as skilled as he is. I had a very painful experience once where the woman put me in so much pain I was crying. However, in general over the years my experience has been relatively pain free(for having to be at a dentists office). Definitely would recommend. read more

I've been moving from dentist to dentist for as long as I can remember, but not anymore! I'm super happy to have found Dr. Lin through a referral. He is super nice and the costs are very good compared to everywhere else that I go. So far I've had teeth cleaning and cavity fillings here. I'll be doing braces here as well, as he's also an orthodontist. Pretty impressive, IMO. Staff is super friendly and I've enjoyed every visit so far. I'm pretty surprised that he doesn't have many reviews, but then again most of his clients are Asian families with kids and I doubt they really use yelp. :P Either ways, if you are looking for a cost friendly and knowledgeable dentist or orthodontist, I'd highly recommend checking this place out. read more

This is an update for a longtime review. I had Total of 2 visits in this clinic back in 2014. After I just saw their reply from my previous post, I'm glad I didn't had my treatment there. During my first visit, I got the x-Ray and some lab work. We paid $150 for the office visit and another two hundreds and something for the lab works. In my second visit, I was told that my case was "complicated" and required a mini-implant. The length of treatment would be 2-3 years. I didn't want to have that surgery and didn't agree with their treatment plan. Of course, I didn't signed the contract and treatment as what they accused me on their reply. I had a loss bracket that day. The assistant roughly fixed it and changed the wire; however I had a whole lot of gel left in my mouth because she want to go home early that day. As I was ready to make my payment for the visit, I was shocked that they asked for $800 for this visit which include the setup fees(I still don't understand what it is for), the one bracket and office visit. Long story short, they charged me $425 at the end. Now, I had my teeth perfectly fixed at somewhere else at much lower rate, no surgery involved, and much shorter treatment time than what I would had in this clinic. My experience with their clinic was absolutely an nightmare and I could still remember everything even 1 and half years later. read more

My first visit was in 1997 or 1998. Dr. Lin replaced a top permanent retainer for me. It was a few years old, and the original SF ortho had retired. I asked around the community and Dr. Lin was highly recommended for his pleasant personality, quality work, and reasonable prices. Well, as of 2012, that top retainer is still going strong. Dr. Lin added some dental cement to it on one side at my recent appointment. At that same appointment, I had my lower permanent retainer replaced by Dr. Lin. The original one was made by the aforementioned retired SF ortho. Dr. Lin's office was able to get me in the next day to remove the retainer and have an impression made. So now I have a complete set of permanent retainers from Dr. Lin. He used a thicker wire than the SF ortho. The office is totally packed, and I am surprised Dr. Lin doesn't have more reviews on Yelp. I was there twice in a week (first to get a dental impression made for the retainer, the second time to get the retainer bonded) and it was extremely busy each time. Dr. Lin takes the time to explain exactly what going on and is very thorough in checking the work. His assistants are friendly and so is the receptionist. There are two treatment rooms; one large room has three dental chairs and the other room has one dental chair. The appointments start on time, which I appreciate. The parking can be challenging (they are in a big building surrounded by other big buildings and they all share the same parking), so I park on the street a few blocks away and walk. Dr. Lin also has an office in San Mateo. Most dental insurance does not cover adult orthodontics. Dr. Lin's rates for cash patients are very reasonable. A good ortho with reasonable rates is quite a find! read more

One of my favorite longtime dentists to come here. My wife has been bringing Samuel JR here for so many years, and he's been one of the best and nicest we've had to deal with. Dr. Lin is really respectful of our family's differing habits, and has always been available for emergencies when they arise. Last Christmas, Samuel JR took a tumble down the stairs and chipped his tooth. We were incredibly worried and unsure whether or not to bring him to the ER and risk those extra bills, but at the same time, the bleeding made it seem urgent. One phone call to Dr. Lin's cellphone, and he coached us through the whole thing, and even showed up on the office on Christmas Eve to help seal up the chip. My mom has wanted me to get some teeth pulled and to get braces for the longest time. I've always been really hesitant about this because I've had braces already for three years in middle school and I didn't want to get them again. Also, the orthodontist I had before was really pushy and insisted that I should do it because it worked for everyone else, but didn't treat me like an individual. My mom insisted that I get a second opinion, so I agreed and we went to Dr. Lin's to get his opinion. Dr. Lin was really nice and saw me on Friday, despite the fact that he's not usually open on Fridays, and was really thorough with the whole check up. He took x-rays and pictures and said that he needed to study the pictures to make sure that it was the best thing to do. After doing the calculations (yes calculations) he told us that he thought that there would be a vast improvement if i went through with the procedure, so I decided to do it. I was really scared to get my teeth pulled but Dr. Lin was really nice about it and made everything a lot better. Overall Dr. Lin is a great dentist/orthodontist. I haven't seen results yet, because I just got my braces on, but I will definitely write another review with the results! read more

I had several issues with my teeth and I wanted to get my teeth straighten too. I was tired of going to a dentist and getting referred to somewhere else to get braces. Dr. Lin is awesome and does it all. He's very smart and knowledgable. I would recommend coming to him. It takes me 10 to 15 minutes to get to his office, but it's worth every mile. read more

I have been thinking this review for 1.5 years, wanted to post this review after I remove my braces. I was hoping my opinion may change after I visit the clinic more times so that I don't have to give them such low review. Unfortunately, my feelings remains the same after 2 years of visits(Dont ask me why didn't I just switch to another orthodontist, I'm just too lazy). 1. Dr. Lin always set up 3+ patients at the same time. He can't spend too much time on a single patient. He has 2 assistants to help him do the "actual work" after he checks on you. Needless to say he doesn't have enough time to explain your questions in detail. there's one time I waited for more than 40 mins and no apology receives. 2. They only accept CASH. No credit card, HSA debit card nor CHECK. I am very suspicious on the purpose of doing this. This cause patients extremely inconvenience. Esp when the down payments is like over $1000. I remember one time they even asked me the claim the insurance by myself! I couldn't believe what I heard either. This is not the way I experienced in other "professional" hospital. 3. The clinic is too cost conscious overall. You can sense that they are trying to reduce their costs in many ways. Like what I just mentioned a)accepting multiple patients at the same time. b) cash only. (to save the 3% transaction fee charged by credit card company. may have other reasons) They are providing their service in the most "cost effective" way but are not providing the "best quality" service. My suggestion is that do more comparison before you chose your orthodontist because this is the decision that's gonna affect your 2+ year in life. read more

Very dishonest dentist - BEWARE!!!! Effective December 2014, Dr Lin is no longer a contract member of Delta Dental, which means that if your insurance is with Delta, then you will incur a big out of pocket expense. Dr Lin failed to inform us that he became out of network and we ended up paying over $400 additional cost on a dental procedure. read more

This is my reply to Amy's response: I was Dr. Lin's patient for more than a year and finally gave up. Those observations were made in my many visits there. The employees you mentioned, they weren't even there yet when I was a patient. One of your ex employee, Pxxx, actually complained to me twice about the working environment. Dr. Lin is a nice person and I didn't want to be rude. However, if you don't look to improving but only finding excuses or arguing, situation won't change much. There are few times where I find myself nodding alongside in agreement with my healthcare provider. Dr. Lin is the rare case where he's been nothing but wonderful for Nancy and I and my daughter who's now in preschool, but together we've mapped out a treatment plan for her all the way for her teenage years. I'm thankful for Dr. Lin for being available on the holidays and weekends for emergencies, he once got called on by Nancy on Christmas even because Eve had tripped and chipped her front tooth.
